  • Ultrasuede is a fascinating material, billed as a synthetic suede but with unique qualities of its own. This season, we introduced a dove grey safari into our collection and we discuss its merits in this video. Available in-store and online!

    Making a safari jacket in ultrasuede makes a lot of sense given the wide use of ultrasuede in the 70’s, most notably for the flight crew uniforms of Braniff Airways designed by Halston.

    How does the material compare to Alcantara?

    • @markchodotcom
      @markchodotcom 2 місяці тому +1

      It is Alcantara just by a different name. Actually the Toray industrial group, based in Japan, owns Alcantara as well as ultrasuede. Alcantara is made in Italy and Ultrasuede is made in Japan. the underlying technology is the same. You can see some of the details of the relationship here - www.toray.com/global/news/details/20130314000305.html

    What mill is it from? What is the gsm? How is the breath ability? Is it lined? It looks pretty good what is the price point and is it available in mtm?

      It's not a textile, it doesn't come from any mill. It's a Japanese alternative to Alcantara. The Safari Jacket is unlined.

    Is there a reason you chose synthetic suede over genuine suede?

      Well, it's undoubtedly more ethical, since no animals are involved in the process. Besides, it looks great! I can't answer on behalf of Mark but I think these are two excellent reasons 🤷‍♂

      @@lorenzoc7224 You do know that leather/suede is a by product of the meat industry. So regardless of wither you wear suede or leather, it won't make a difference. In fact, synthetics are far worse for the environment, especially fake leather.
      Leather is a left over from the meat industry and there for, by wearing leather you're actually making sure none of it went to waste, or the hide just gets thrown out and is wasted. The animal was unfortunately going to get slaughtered regardless of the hide. Especially best to stick to natural tanning leather, using things like vegetable base etc.
      But honestly, using fake leather is far worse than real leather. By buying leather, you're not supporting animal cruelty or anything. They aren't slaughtered for the purpose of leather.. ever.
      Noticed I repeated a lot, but hey.. most people don't know this haha.

      Easier to clean especially light coloured suedes get annoying scuffs. I would be interested to try it in person compared to real suede

      @@AlistairHig I didn't know this, thank you! I wear leather myself so this makes me feel a little bit less "guilty". I did know that "fake" materials are often worse for the environment but what I meant was "not directly worse for animals" (now I know it's not really true though).

      @@lorenzoc7224 Yeah, to be honest I only found out in the last few weeks too actually haha. I believe it was on a sartorial talks (Hugo Jacomet - Parisian Gentleman) with The Shoe Snow talking about the truths of the luxury shoe industry.
      Worth a watch if you enjoy these kind of things. Since you watch these videos, I'm sure you might find it interesting.
      They also explain how most leather ends up going to the car industry and then top fashion houses.

    As always very stylish. Personally I don't think I can pull this off as is getting a little too Roger Moore with the collar. I would prefer a stand collar making it a bit more contemporary complimenting the modern material.
