Both of you are too young to understand. Huberman and Peter Atia are super big in the health and longevity space. Their main audience is the vast ocean of 40+ weekend athletes who are focused on prolonging the semi-youth of their 30s into their 50s and 60s. For this audience, there is no limit to the hope of keeping that youthful vitality going.

I’m absolutely at capacity with regards to aero gains, speed and generally the “what’s faster” content that fills up my UA-cam feed. It’s just not relevant to me and especially as someone who rides endurance geometry.
The problem is I’m constantly sold the idea that I could go faster with a new frame or wheels because it’s easy to talk about how something is a few watts faster, when what really matters is how it rides. (Which barely ever seems a consideration)
I’ll give you an example, my BMC Roadmachine is a fairly run of the mill endurance bike, stock wheels and Ultegra di2, it’s not light by any means at 8kg but it climbs fairly well and feels nice out of the saddle, but what completely blew me away was how it handled fast descents in the Pyrenees, utterly superb, confidence inspiring turn in, never feeling twitchy and allowed me to build a rythym and descend as fast if not faster than my friend riding a Bianchi aero frame / Enve wheels costing twice as much.
Last year I took a popular local KOM on my winter bike with Rubinos and mudguards on!
I know the speed talk won’t stop as it’s what gives most channels something to compare products, and I also know it does apply to someone perhaps who is racing, but there are many of us who simply don’t care if a frame is 3 watts faster than theirs.

As an average physically active person with a full time MD job of 220+ work hours per month and a family, working out for 5-6 hours per week is pretty hard to achieve.
Zone 2 is being “pushed” because it is very safe for amateurs and older people and you don’t feel that discomfort as in zone 5 (HR zone), but you still get that metabolic and positive health benefit. That’s why podcasts like Huberman and Attia talk about it as much. Of course if you’re an advanced sports person, you definitely need other forms of exercise to push your potential as much as possible.

The Z2 thing in the cycling community, I believe, originated with a GCN video interview with Inigo San Millan and how he handles Pogacar's training. It landed about the same time as Huberman and Atilla started focusing on it as well. I think the reason it has taken over the cycling training discussion is because of the benefits you gain versus the fatigue and effort involved with high intensity training which had dominated the training discussion for the last 5 years. The average punter spending 5-10 hours a week on the bike gets good benefit without the fatigue of HIIT sessions which was what was being pushed so heavily during the lockdown era.

    • @andrewcockburn7484
      @andrewcockburn7484 8 місяців тому +6

Z2 is nothing new. Outside of the bleeding edge of performance, training isn't that complicated. Just do 2 intense sessions a week, add as much zone 2 as you have time for and do some resistance training as you get older.

If I have 4 hours a week to spend on my bike, with zero intention of becoming some amazing cyclist or riding huge distances, I'd much rather go pretty hard for those hours just because I enjoy it. Is it the optimal way to train? Probably not, but I don't care. I'm not training, I'm just riding my bike as exercise and for mental wellbeing and Zone 2 is incredibly boring.

If you take a more wholistic view of what Attia is trying to pursue with his personal life and his professional life, the impacts of Z2 on longevity are profound. I'm glad you two are finally getting that modern bikes are basically the same. Based on all the current data. You either buy the Simplon Pride 2 or the Tarmac. The Simplon is the fastest bike in the world on any flatish course. The Tarmac, only if the course has very sustained climbing. Of interest other European magazines have done similar wind tunnel testing. In high yaw wind conditions the Simplon is significantly faster than any other bike available. As much as 20w at 40kph. The Tour test averages the whole yaw sweep which actually hides the bikes rather significant advantage in crosswinds. It's simply the first bike to fully maximize the new relaxed UCI tube profile rules. It's also designed by some very talented aerodynamicists. It really deserves a much larger audience.

  • @ultimatist

Basing your opinion of Attia and Huberman on some shorts or clips is just completely the wrong way round. They'll spend an hour explaining the actual neuroscience behind it all to then extract some useful 'protocols'. Huberman is probably the most nuanced, and has the most disclaimers I've ever heard from a podcaster.
Say the podcast about sleep. They are not about biohacking, although some things are mentioned of course. They are about realising how fundamentally important sleep is for humans in all aspects of our life.

  • @jameseastwood402

I would almost say that we are at peak aero for framesets. If something is up there in the ballpark in the tests (which lets face it - all the aero marketed bikes are, even if they are only CFD designed) then the other metrics (stiffness, weight) become bigger differentiators. Whilst there are some lighter framesets the majority is still in components, so it then comes down to layup, stiffness, flex... which comes round to the original point - subjective ride feel, tyres and value are the most important things... so pick the bike that is in the ballpark and gives you 'I frickin love it' vibes.

  • @cyclistshub
    @cyclistshub 8 місяців тому +3

I find it fascinating that the SL8 performed so well in the wind tunnel despite not having the typical aero frame design. Kudos to the engineers. 👍
Regarding product reviews: As a reviewer myself, I find it difficult to find a balance between presenting objective metrics and subjective feelings. When the reviewer leans more towards feelings, he may be attacked by people for making things up (although he does present his real feelings). Conversely, purely objective metrics can be "dry" and may not reflect the real-world use of a given product. As always, it also depends on the audience. 🤷‍♂ In the time I've been listening to you guys, I have a feeling that satisfying you won't be easy, haha. 😅

I have to say that you are off target with the zone 2 discussion. Your discussion seems to say, "we only pay attention to real pro cyclists and staff for our training advice," but Dr San Milan is part of the performance staff for UAE team Emirates. If you listen to Tadej or Van der Poel or other riders discuss their training or watch people "out for a ride with the pro's" they discuss their goals in terms of zones and using zone 2 work. While I, as a cardiovascular physician, don't think it is any wonder pill, there is hard data behind it. Your detraction of it references no data, so as others have commented you do seem like- 'I don't understand it, so it must be junk.' May I remind you both, neither of you are pro racers and your top performance days are likely in their rearview mirror. You better start thinking about how you are going to sustain the activity you love into your later years. Most of your viewers likely like me and take the Huberman's and Attia's with a grain of salt, but both are exotically well trained and are quoting hard data.

What's the issue Chris? If you listen to Dr (note Dr) Peter Attia, his focus is on health and longevity. He does deep dives into many aspects of exercise and health. Aerobic endurance training was just one of the topics he covered in depth last year. As Jesse states in the video, he does a couple hours of aerobic endurance (in his case on a bike as he rides) some VO2 work, resistance trains a couple a week and pays attention to diet. He sees that as a solid foundation for health and longevity. Again, what's the issue?
When the growth of cycling is coming from Master's riders, many being busy professional males, I think the crossover between this cycling segment and advice on overall health is quite natural.

The aero test I really want to see is comparing stuff for us mere mortals, specifically us commuter types. Get at least 30 of us, put us on the road bikes we already use, then compare things like lycra vs normal clothes, and within that t-shirt and jeans vs suit, for example. Compare hoods vs drops vs aero hoods. Compare backpack vs pannier vs frame bag vs more exotic setups. Hell maybe even throw in some hybrid bikes. And do it at normal commutery pace, which for me is 10-15mph (yay city cycling!). This whole thing would be suuuuuper expensive both in money and in time, but this is the kind of shit that's actually relevant to me. For example, how much of a difference would lycra actually make on my morning commute, and is it worth changing once I get there?

You guys are missing one point about Decathlon. Yes it is the place where we buy sporting goods but it's popular because you can buy a "good enough" snowboard for 150€ instead of 600€, and it's popular because you can get cheap compression underwear with comparable quality to Nike or UA , cheap but durable backpacks, cheap everything basically...
So while people enjoy the existence of their stores I don't think anyone would straight up identify with Decathlon as a fan and say "hey that's my team, I wear some of their generic brand tshirts when I go to the gym"
And the whole Van Rysel brand is one of their upsell brands, in the store you will have the beginner bib shorts for like 30€, then the intermediate ones for 60€ and then the Van Rysel "pro" ones for 120€

I like your tenor as sort of newspaper ombudsmen for the Wide World of Cycling and regarding sponsors and team names, as an American, it never got better than 7-Eleven, a popular convenience-store chain putting money into a team of North Americans to compete on the big stages of Western Europe in the '80s. And I thought it was cool that the final big sponsor of Laurent Fignoun was Gatorade, the original sports drink for ball-sports players. And every sponsor, really, is great as it takes them to put up the big money to keep the big wheels rolling, tho' as Jesse says, friendly and relatable sponsors are best, like for me, my first road race was in '75 in Frankfurt, West Germany for American teen military dependents and it was sponsored by the USO and 7-Up and I won a new Peugeot bicycle for doing my thing. And I appreciated all three of those sponsors then and now for making that day happen for a bunch of kids who were willing to show up for a bike race.

I feel like I've fallen into the twilight zone. I never heard of this until a few days ago, when my brother on Strava commented he was doing a Zone 2 ride, which was a shoulder shrug to me, cos my analysis is typically 75% Z3, 25% Z4, now I see this. I think this stuff is really valuable as inspiration for the average bloke, something they can relate to or actually aspire to. Jesse is right saying it's not about high performance competitive stuff, but for most off us, that's not something we aspire to. Facing the sun for 10 mins sounds like a great idea. I was always a fan of getting some sun on my nuts, for sure, but then, I grew up as a surfy hippie, so it fits.

Great episode, Happy New Year to you and yours. I agree with Jesse about the zone 2 benefits, one has to be naive to dismiss the importance of zone 2 but more naive to believe is a cyclic performance exercise, just listen to Peter when he says any type of exercise will do, zone 2 is a cardio /vascular/regeneration benefit and not a performance cycling one. About the SL8 being so advanced and blah blah blah, how come no one ever investigates how much difference the bike made for a pro race, when a more superior aero bike finishes 1st and another more pedestrian frame comes in 2nd if it the rider ? Or the bike? Could be easily measured . I believe all these tests and data analysis are meant for the enthusiast consumer and not the pros, a pro must ride what the team offers when a consumer can chose his bike and buy into how much a Sl8 could help him.

On Jesse's bit about the pro-conti teams, some of those companies have tons of money and the pittance of an investment is still worth. Case in point : Danish pharma company Novo Nordisk. They are a leading producer of all sorts of diabetes medications and have and annual revenue well over 24 BILLION euro.
All of the pro team's riders are type 1 diabetics. Their founder/CEO, a T1 diabetic himself, is Phil Southerland. He also happens to be founder/CEO of Supersapiens, working with / piggybacking on Abbott Labs' CGM tech for that (and smartly upselling it to non-diabetics).

He understands if we need to spend £6k we need to test bikes. The most our club spent was a ridiculous £18,000 Dogma! On average we spend £5-6k now. Prices are insanely high & I suspect we will spend less now.
Dealers used to have loan trial bikes to test them out. This needs to return.

The Tour Magazine episode was great. I remember listening to it and thinking that there were a couple of cultural misunderstandings… he always answered the questions you asked and perhaps didn’t get the subtext and context behind the questions that your regular audience understood. I came to the same conclusion as you guys that it’s ultimately about the feel of the bike and I wonder if we will see more of a bike leasing model that may allow for this more, but could also be quite wasteful and lead to bikes being designed without durability in mind. Particularly with sponsors like “lease-a-bike” coming in as well as Decathlon, who could incorporate a leasing mode with relative ease. Curious on what others think about this

The talk about team names was a bit of a meh moment for me. The Teams are called what they are because of the company's investment and sponsorship. They invest and sponsor a team because they want to raise the profile of their company or business. There are many reasons why Teams are remembered. It could be they are great at marketing the team. Their wins and memorable races. Their memorable kit design whether good or bad, the bikes they ride. Riders profiles and accessibility. There are lots of factors that make a team memorable and to dis a team because their name shows a lack of respect for the company that is willing to prop up money and invest in a team. Without this investment the sport would be dead!

"why this bike is so close to those Aero bikes"
bekoz tiz all smoke and mirrors, meant to brainwash morons and get them to drop 15k$ on a bike that is not much better than a bike costing half or less than that. Over the recent 4-5 years GCN and other grifters kept repeating aero is everything, weight doesn't matter - only because aero was the only way to differentiate and sell products which became heavy as F thanks to introduction of disc brakes. Now that they managed to learn how to build lightweight disc brake bikes GCN and other grifters returned to the weight as differentiating factor. GCN even started saying that "over the recent years WE'VE BEEN TOLD that aero is king"... No, ya muppets HAVE BEEN TELLING everyone that. These fukkkers are shameless.

I don't agree with testing aero at 30kph. A 30kph average ride isn't crazy. How many times is there no wind and you therefore ride at 30kph 'airspeed'? Almost never.
15kph or more wind is pretty normal. A lot of my rides are half in to the wind, half with the wind. So half my ride is at 15-20kph airspeed at which we already know the small aero things barely matter. But the other half is 40-45kph airspeed when the small aero does seem to matter.

I love my Z2 on the bike. I can just fire up the trainer to hit a specific power, turn on the PS5 and game for hours and hours on end.
So much better that riding outdoors on the road tbh. The road is BORING, hot, dirty, and worst of all, inefficient. Indoors, you can fix the power to provide a minimum stimuli needed to spur the necessary physiological adaptation. Plus, I have my console to pass the time, which is by far way more mentally engaging than just doggedly peddling while staring at the never ending row of trees which gets stale very quickly.

I'd like to see team names stabilise like football teams and make the sport easier to follow. Manchester United doesn't change it's name when it changes sponsors. It's difficult enough to follow the transfers in and out without the team name changing as well.

    • @magnus7922

Agreed, as a fan you want to follow a team with one name, not a name that´s changing every other year. You want to be a fan of the team, not any particular, current sponsor. Selling out your name is a sign of desperation and shows you yourself don´t care about the team name so why should fans care about it....and also the actual team. It might be necessary to get more sponsor money but I´m sure it hurts the sport in the long run.

And i agree is better to have companies (sponsors) that promote the sport, that does something for the sport, selling equipment, selling nutrition, etc and not oil companies or shady States only wanting to clean money or/and image.
Another thing is the team being memorable because they win a lot, they have the best cyclists, that is a different thing. But between both options i prefer to have Sport related companies directly involved
