with glowplugs replaced every 10k is a joke, if you service them as per schedual and use anti seeze on them you won't have any problems, just when replacing and the threads don't look great, 1 pass with thread repair tool to clean them with some oil on it (so debriss will stay on the tool) and you are ready to go.
Another great video Dean. Sound advice about the glow plugs. I had 2x fail on my E61 535d and I only knew as it stopped the DPF regeneration. I used your video and removed and replaced all 6 glow plugs. ISTA diags knew 2 had failed - I didn’t need to replace the control module. Need to do the vacuum pipes next - a few look a bit crusty 😀
my vortex crankcase breather did send lots of oil to intake, so yeah, you still need to clean that at least,( and i mean cleaning of vortex separator and intake itself) so it is much better to use good "old" fabric filter to prevent that( and change it every 2 oil change which is not that hard and not expensive at all) , not to say diesel engine can use oil as a fuel, so it can start revving on its own

Love the intent but frankly the content is inaccurate and misleading. My X5 Diesel is sitting on almost 220,000 kms and runs strong and is ultra reliable. Obviously, a lot depends on where you are in the World. I'm in Australia but looking at the BMW UA-cam experiences in the extremes of Canada the messaging is positive. Servicing is crucial as always. Best car I've ever owned.

Hi BMW Doctor. If I do an EGR delete to my 2001 3.0D E53, is it necessary to do an ECU tuning? Is it safe to use the car without any tuning at all? Thanks,
I disagree on the remap , i have done mine and driving the car for 5 years so far no problems. Just take it to a pro who knows what he is doing. But i agree on the engine problems have replaced almost everything you mentioned in this video
The E9x 325d M57 also didn't have swirl flaps. Mine had none when I removed mine (no blanks or facility to fit them was there), and neither does another friend's 325d. I believe the 325d also had the later Vortex breathers from when we both did ours.
If I heard you correctly you said to replace glow plugs every 10k? I'm assuming that's 10k miles but even so, that's a very short replacement cycle in my opinion. I've replaced the glow plugs and controller several times on two different E61 535d engines and I would certainly agree that they should be replaced on a similar schedules to spark plugs in a petrol engine. Something like 48k or 60k miles max, but not 10k unless you have an actual failure showing up in a fault code. If you don't do many miles then I'd also suggest a 4/5 year replacement if you don't get to 48k or 60k miles in that time. I totally agree that you don't want to leave it too long and then when a plug falls you can't get it out. My method for extraction is to get the engine fully hot before starting and then strip down everything to allow the inlet manifold to be removed. Then remove the electrical connections carefully and spray plenty of Plusgas or other penetrating oil around the glow plugs (not WD-40) and then go have a cup of tea and some cake. Or you could just stand around for 10-20 mins if you prefer! In any case, use a torque wrench in reverse mode and set a torque of 25NM and see if you can get any plugs out. If not, spray them again and wait 5 mins and try again at 28NM, then repeat at 30NM, 32NM and 35NM, each time spraying more Plusgas. Usually you'll get 4 or 5 out and maybe all 6 by this point. But if not then you need to decide to either leave the remaining plugs alone, especially if they are not showing as faulty, OR go to 40NM and try to get them out. I don't know what happens beyond 40NM but eventually you will snap the plug so choose wisely!
I bought a very cheap 2006 530d with a check engine on the dash last month :) Me going like "I had the M57 engine in my 525d years ago I know it inside out.... - New: EGR valve, Throttle Body, EGR solenoid, all vacuum hoses, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust pressure sensor, map sensor, new ccv breather, forced dfp regen 3 times, then serviced it. @@piovo1 agree entirely, I have two 2001 530D Tourings with 170k miles (273k kms) and 173k (278k kms) miles. In fact the only engine component failures have been water pump on both (coincidentaly around 163k miles on each), the turbo let go on the manual at about 80k miles not long after I bought it but that was put down to lack of maintenance as the car had spent about 12 months sitting on forecourts and the left-hand engine mount on the auto which I changed about 1,000 miles ago. I just bought an 2009 M57. Great car for only 123k miles. I had a question on what fluids I should change. Definitely oil for sure but what about the transmission? Doc, what's your opinion on the automatic transmission oil cooler on the M57? Apparently they have a built in thermostat and are know for failure resulting in car not reaching temp 88 degrees and poor mpg, any insight?
Have to chuckle with these videos that say that "Parts That Will Fail On A 100k+ Mile BMW M57 Engine". Why, because my two 2001 E39 530Ds have 170k and 173k miles and these parts haven't failed. On an M57 there is no given when parts will or will not fail. The M57 is pretty much bomb-proof and if properly maintained they will go on "forever" 2nd-hand BMW are often bought cheaply, driven hard by people who can't afford professional maintenance and don't have the skills, equipment or money to do the work themselves.
Hi, Could I please ask if the oil trap valve, as a replacement for the filter, is available for an e93, M57 engine. 330d convertible 2007? And if so, where can I get one. A lot of sites are saying the oil trap valve is not compatible with my engine. Thank you, Kind regards, Paul
top problems for me, 2008 e61 1. EGR thermostat and Engine thermostat is pain in the ass, buy OEM from bmw not some cheap ones. 2. touring boot hinges wires crack, causes some electrical problems 3. air suspension sensor fails (dirty, or a some hose crack) 4. DPF ofc, delete this crap 5. vibration damper rubber crack, again if its cheap one then it cracks easily, not common but keep eye on it. 6. intake flaps delete dose if you have and blank it. ...nothing else, been owner 8year, dose are problems what i had. Happy with my car already 302k driven other like seals from turbo, and intake, dose are not problem, thats normal for anyother nowadays cars, thing get old, +5year can rest again
I have a 535d E60 with egr delete but still have cooler and thermostat, does the cooler need to be removed and blanked aswell? I've had no issues with the car but is it better to remove it?
Thanks for the video. Great stuff. If the E53 is having transmission issues (lurches forward and jerks coming into a rolling stop from 2nd to 1st) could this be a solenoid problem?
I've got a 2004 L322 Range Rover with the BMW 6 cylinder turbo diesel (240,000 KLM). Runs fine, no smoke or oil leaks but sound like someone is using a hammer under the bonnet especially when engine is cold. Once it heats up to normal operating temp it quiets down but it is still there. Any ideas what to investigate?
May be a dumb question but is there a tune that can “turn off/block” egr system? I know once it has an EGR delete and flush/clear these motors run much better and don’t have as much carbon buildup as a result. My only concern with doing a delete is that we have emissions tests for diesels under 8500lbs in my state. Also, is the EGR delete undetectable or?? Just trying to wrap my head around this
Hi Dean, my e70 X5 with an N57 diesel engine has just failed it's MOT for a major oil leak at the back of the engine. The garage didn't know where from and said they were two busy to investigate! Do you have any suggestions as to where it may be coming from please, is there a common cause?
12:10 525d e39 2003 with the weird m57b25, vacuum turbo regulation - a fucking stone got stuck there so the regulation couldnt fully open up thus knocking out the turbo flaps out of their place forcing me to open up the turbo and fix them back in place, even bought a replacement turbo because it got me scared, so now i have another at disposal 😅
I have temp problems with my l322 bmw engine I’ve changed the egr thermostat so is the other one to replace now the main water pump one? Would this effect the mpg a lot as it’s very poor at the moment. I’ve don’t the crank filter and egr valve as you’ve said they were minging.
Thank you for this video, I have changed my deshuiler and glow plugs this weekend, because I have 4 plugs off (e46 330d), however I noticed a lot of black oil next manifold connection gasket (I think because the cold wether) but I was disappointed because after this change my engine still have a big consommation when the car is on stop I can see the counter turn quickly exceeding 13l/100km, then decrease when I run, what do you think, my next step is remove the EGR, but do we need to reprogram the engine map, as the air mass programmed don't consider deleted EGR
Dean, I have a BMW m57 engine in my 3.0l TD6 RR. At the moment it is stripped ready to be rebuilt but I am concerned about the oil pump timing chain and how slack it is. I have remove install intake manifold and check all hoses, so far ok
I dunno why but this man has good videos ( I’m not an expert in engines)… but this guy should really speak more loudly , decrease background music and be somewhat excited..!!!
@BMW Doctor, nice vid 👍 did you ever put out a video on the common faults for the webasto heating unit? I don’t agree with you on the remapping side of that engine!
Great video, but the camera angle and the hand making autofocus got crazy is very frustrating, this videos is so good that deserves a new reload version with better camera direction.
Agree about staying away from remaps . On my n57 640d engine is good at 60k and regular check and keep the modules green but would you still reccomend an egr removal or only when issues arrive or high mileage , does the egr and dpf have to be coded out ? Was thinking about it but my local garage said it would cause more problems . Your thoughts Dean .
I'm a big lover of BMWs and I want to get back into the brand. Been looking at an E61 25D with a later M57 and a six speed ZF. I know that's a fair combo as these cars go. It's done 120K it's been cared for the owner says. Would you touch it or not just some advise.
I’ve had all 6 glow plugs continuously show on Carly and other diagnostic tools, car starts fine each time but I get a lot of white smoke but believe this is due to no dpf, I was told it had an EGR delete… which doesn’t seem to be the case as BMW specialists replaced these + vacuum hoses 2.5 years ago. I have a 335D m57 engine (2009) any advice on this? Lately some more black smoke on accelerating, replacing the top Intercooler hose pipe as the garage I went to recently said that was slipping due to the clip being worn / bent, hence loss of power at times.
M57 diesel problems: DO NOT REMAP 1- EGR valve= Delete 2- Crankcase breather= Get updated one 3- Water pump + Thermostat= replace; EGR cooler= Delete 4- Plastic pipe on turbo (will cause boost leak)= Attach correctly 5- Breather pipe on air box pops off (will smoke)= Make sure its on correctly 6- Glow plug and glow plug module= Replace glow plugs every ~10k miles 7- Manifold- Swirl flap= Delete (NOT on X5d?- believe swirl flap is present in USA) 8- Fuel filter sensor plug (ONLY on older E39 M57)= Change with every oil change 9- Webasto pre-heat probs (X5 ONLY esp. E53)= Make sure works right (helps warmup) 10- Vacuum lines (esp. 535d, E30) due to heat of motor= Replace 1 at a time (easy to mix up)
Hi just a shot in the dark I have an e46 330d with the newer m57 engine as of last week it’s started to take about 4 to 8 seconds to start was instantly starting prior to this and is worse when it gets operating temp I have changed the cam sensor and still no good can you please help
Thanks a lot for the video, does the DPF have to be removed before blanking the EGR? And does the ticking fixing method work the same as on the N52? Best of luck to you.
BMW Doctor I have a question about the BMW e60 530d 2004 218hp Automatic. there is a third thermostat which is on the oil cooler of the gearbox. I changed twice the main thermostat and the thermostat of AGR and the car did not heat more than 70 degrees maximum 80 in city driving. After replacing the third, the car began to warm up normally. can you give me a little more information about this third thermostat
Great video, I had an e46 and e90 M47 with most of these issues also, well explained 👍 I'm looking at an X5 with either the M57 or N57, which engine would you recommend? I'm leaning towards to older M57 as I know the N57 has chain issues... would you agree? Cheers
It is, but it's not what the price of the car is.... Its maintaining on those particular cars, if you purchase 1 don't slack with servicing or using cheap Chinese parts and you'll have a brilliant motor. BMWdoctor will also back this up.
@BMW Doctor N57 in a X3 30d 2015 with 130k Getting really bad fuel consumption. Around 27mpg even though I'm driving like a granny. Motorway mpg is not much better 35mpg. Actually the m57n is some hassle but it can be done...if you can handle the electronics as the e39 is very close to the e53. Actually i wouldnt bother with the e38 zf5. @@rustynail9516 Here in norway it is a normal mod to install a VAG inline thermostat on the gearbox cooler line.
The M57 is pretty much bomb-proof and if properly maintained they will go on "forever"
2nd-hand BMW are often bought cheaply, driven hard by people who can't afford professional maintenance and don't have the skills, equipment or money to do the work themselves.
Hi,
Could I please ask if the oil trap valve, as a replacement for the filter, is available for an e93, M57 engine. 330d convertible 2007?
And if so, where can I get one. A lot of sites are saying the oil trap valve is not compatible with my engine.
Thank you,
Kind regards,
Paul
I have an m57d25 no dpf therefore no egr cooler ... My engine wont come up to temp (i changed mysterious) yet no luck.any leads??
I’ve had 3 e36 320 323 328 remapped and also have an xtype remapped all worked much better with no issues.
top problems for me, 2008 e61
1. EGR thermostat and Engine thermostat is pain in the ass, buy OEM from bmw not some cheap ones.
2. touring boot hinges wires crack, causes some electrical problems
3. air suspension sensor fails (dirty, or a some hose crack)
4. DPF ofc, delete this crap
5. vibration damper rubber crack, again if its cheap one then it cracks easily, not common but keep eye on it.
6. intake flaps delete dose if you have and blank it.
...nothing else, been owner 8year, dose are problems what i had. Happy with my car already 302k driven
other like seals from turbo, and intake, dose are not problem, thats normal for anyother nowadays cars, thing get old, +5year can rest again
I have a 535d E60 with egr delete but still have cooler and thermostat, does the cooler need to be removed and blanked aswell? I've had no issues with the car but is it better to remove it?
just remove
What kind of M57 engine is this? I read somewhere that m57d30 (2926cm^3) doesn't have swirl flaps when it comes with manual gearbox.
THE Man for Bmw s.... 👍👍
Doc my diagnose today was all 6 glows are faulty is that mean control module gone or plugs milage is now 280k never replace them before.
Thanks for the video. Great stuff.
If the E53 is having transmission issues (lurches forward and jerks coming into a rolling stop from 2nd to 1st) could this be a solenoid problem?
yes it could
Congrat’s ! 100k
Thanks bro your the first to notice we hit it 😁

Hi I have a 2010 635d with 70000 miles what would you recommend me to change at this mileage thank you
I've got a 2004 L322 Range Rover with the BMW 6 cylinder turbo diesel (240,000 KLM). Runs fine, no smoke or oil leaks but sound like someone is using a hammer under the bonnet especially when engine is cold. Once it heats up to normal operating temp it quiets down but it is still there. Any ideas what to investigate?
If not vacuum pump, it could be a timing issue
May be a dumb question but is there a tune that can “turn off/block” egr system? I know once it has an EGR delete and flush/clear these motors run much better and don’t have as much carbon buildup as a result. My only concern with doing a delete is that we have emissions tests for diesels under 8500lbs in my state. Also, is the EGR delete undetectable or?? Just trying to wrap my head around this
You can remap your ECU so that it doesn't do EGR. You don't increase boost->torque->power just remove the EGR from happening...
Hi Dean, my e70 X5 with an N57 diesel engine has just failed it's MOT for a major oil leak at the back of the engine. The garage didn't know where from and said they were two busy to investigate! Do you have any suggestions as to where it may be coming from please, is there a common cause?
What year did the egr change from vacuum to electronic? Or is it model specific? I’m interested in X5s in particular thanks
EGR the same setup on the E93 N47 320d? Can I remove it and still pass the mot? Has it got an electronic EGR?
I have just picked up a 2005 E53 X5, Will they have swirl flaps from factory?
12:10 525d e39 2003 with the weird m57b25, vacuum turbo regulation - a fucking stone got stuck there so the regulation couldnt fully open up thus knocking out the turbo flaps out of their place forcing me to open up the turbo and fix them back in place, even bought a replacement turbo because it got me scared, so now i have another at disposal 😅
Top video mate vital info on M57. previous owner did remap on mine and chain snapped at 135K
No problem Elliot mate
What year is the car you doing the video on ? I got a 2007 M57 2.5d and thinking to do an EGR delete but not sure if I need to do the map after :-?
Just wanna say. My 320D blows hot air after about 3miles! When they looked after they will never fail!
Dean, I have a BMW m57 engine in my 3.0l TD6 RR. At the moment it is stripped ready to be rebuilt but I am concerned about the oil pump timing chain and how slack it is. I acquired a second block and that oil pump chain was exactly the same size, do you know how to measure the chain for tension? regards Brian
@brianward9593 hey mate oil pump chain is always slack. I replaced mine with a new chain same slack
hi BMW Doctor and everyone, i have problem on my E36 M50 jerk acceleration while driving, the rpm goes up and down on 1400-2000, above 2000 rpm everything is ok, while idle and i rev engine till 3000rpm nothing goes wrong, any idea what to do?
I have remove install intake manifold and check all hoses, so far ok
are there any all metal replacement parts available for the plastic ones?
I dunno why but this man has good videos ( I’m not an expert in engines)… but this guy should really speak more loudly , decrease background music and be somewhat excited..!!!
i was thinking to remap my e92 335d 2007 but after watching few your vids change my mind a bit hehe
What exactly made you change your mind?
A really useful video ! Might take a brave pill and fit new glow plugs and module.
No problem my friend go ahead and do it it’s not hard at all
@BMW Doctor, nice vid 👍 did you ever put out a video on the common faults for the webasto heating unit? I don’t agree with you on the remapping side of that engine!
What to do when my x5 is remapped? How to bring to stock. Have no idea where is been remapped. Thanks
Please wich filter you said you bought?
Great vid!
Great video, but the camera angle and the hand making autofocus got crazy is very frustrating, this videos is so good that deserves a new reload version with better camera direction.
Does the egr on the 330d 2006/06 need coding? Or is it vacuum based
Agree about staying away from remaps .
Glow plug controller dead
Just about to buy an e46 330d with nearly 300k miles on it!!
For the thermostats the automatic gearbox thermostat failure is also in many cases the reason this engines couldn't come up to temperature
Bypass is what you need
I might be late to see this but can u explain a bit of the automatic gearbox thermostat
Recomend me please few main things too change on a 205 miles m57 2008 please would really be apriciated
have you got how to vids on all of these as I'm looking at a 170k series b msport 525d with the m75 engine
Nice video man, i would have thought the stock exhaust manifold would have been on the list!
Just done mine last week what a pain!!
Aluminum?
Agree, almost inevitable failure over 150k miles
Hi mate what does the ccv filter upgrade look like
Do you have Any schematics about the vacuum tubes all ?
M57 diesel problems:
DO NOT REMAP
1- EGR valve= Delete
2- Crankcase breather= Get updated one
3- Water pump + Thermostat= replace; EGR cooler= Delete
4- Plastic pipe on turbo (will cause boost leak)= Attach correctly
5- Breather pipe on air box pops off (will smoke)= Make sure its on correctly
6- Glow plug and glow plug module= Replace glow plugs every ~10k miles
7- Manifold- Swirl flap= Delete (NOT on X5d?- believe swirl flap is present in USA)
8- Fuel filter sensor plug (ONLY on older E39 M57)= Change with every oil change
9- Webasto pre-heat probs (X5 ONLY esp. E53)= Make sure works right (helps warmup)
10- Vacuum lines (esp. 535d, E30) due to heat of motor= Replace 1 at a time (easy to mix up)
bullshit , ive done a remap and the car has never had any problems , mine is a m57tu2
These M57's have to be remapped,BMW had to choke them to death to keep the emissions down.
Thanks I bought one today. No I know!!
Yyyyyeeeesss my man! Webasto service and remote start upgrade pleeeeaaasseee! 👍👍👏👏
You got that right I ordered new one already and I'm gonna be doing the remote start
Hi just a shot in the dark I have an e46 330d with the newer m57 engine as of last week it’s started to take about 4 to 8 seconds to start was instantly starting prior to this and is worse when it gets operating temp I have changed the cam sensor and still no good can you please help
Planning to buy one with hi mileage 260k dose the engine be still ok to 300k ? Thanks
dude i’ve got a e46 204ps 6 spd, map etc.
anyway.. turbo failed, had it rebuilt and it’s gone again after 150 miles… can you give any advice?
Thanks a lot for the video, does the DPF have to be removed before blanking the EGR? And does the ticking fixing method work the same as on the N52? Best of luck to you.
Thanks bro and I still can’t find your message on my Instagram 😂 send again please
@@BMWDoctor will do it :)
sent the message in :)
What about an M57 with the DPF filter on... is it worth buying? Or will the DPF filter cause too much trouble?
BMW Doctor I have a question about the BMW e60 530d 2004 218hp Automatic. there is a third thermostat which is on the oil cooler of the gearbox. I changed twice the main thermostat and the thermostat of AGR and the car did not heat more than 70 degrees maximum 80 in city driving. After replacing the third, the car began to warm up normally. can you give me a little more information about this third thermostat
Great point i aked the same question earlier, what degree does your car warm upto now? Do you have increased economy?
now the car heats up to 92 93 degrees and fuel consumption is significantly reduced
Had same problem engine stuck at 70-75 degrees turned out to be slight gunk build up between new main thermostat and housing letting water through.
If I blank EGR, will I need it mapped out?
Yes
What’s the pipe off the inter cooler I need one exactly like it? Them plastic things are shit
How do you feel about reliability and daily drivability?
my father has a jeep with a bmw m57 engine and the engine stops in motion and it is difficult to start, do you know what the problem is?
So, on vacuum operated EGR not needed any coding after deletion? Thanks .
No it does. My engine light came on after 20miles
Great video, I had an e46 and e90 M47 with most of these issues also, well explained 👍
I'm looking at an X5 with either the M57 or N57, which engine would you recommend? I'm leaning towards to older M57 as I know the N57 has chain issues... would you agree? Cheers
M57. Another thing on the N57 is that the timing chain is mounted on the back which is a pain if it starts producing problems.
More reliable than the mercedes v6 diesel motors
CAN ANYBODY PLEASE TELL ME IF A 2012 BMW 750 LI IS A GOOD CAR TO HAVE
It is, but it's not what the price of the car is.... Its maintaining on those particular cars, if you purchase 1 don't slack with servicing or using cheap Chinese parts and you'll have a brilliant motor. BMWdoctor will also back this up.
Nah, stay well away from BMW V8s. Highly unreliable, esp with valve stem seal issues
Please put a translation on the videos. You have interesting content but I don't understand everything. Regards from Slovakia

N57 in a X3 30d 2015 with 130k
Getting really bad fuel consumption. Around 27mpg even though I'm driving like a granny. Motorway mpg is not much better 35mpg. Noticed lots of dry soot on the exhaust aswell.
Any suggestions where I should start?
PS. Love the channel. Keep the videos coming
vacuumpipe from turbo broken
Thankyou for all your help in these videos, they are great and help alot but Please could I get some guidence/direction 🙏, looking for an e60, been set on a 535d would this be my best option for economy and what price range should I be looking at for a well looked after example. Thankyou if you get the time to reply 💙
Is mos2 engineoil good for the engine?
Is it possible to swap the M57N 204ps to the e39 and combine to a E38 ZF automatic Gearbox?
Actually the m57n is some hassle but it can be done...if you can handle the electronics as the e39 is very close to the e53. Actually i wouldnt bother with the e38 zf5. Go look up turbolamik and cantcu here in yt and go for an 8hp. I know sb who runs one 8hp70 with turblomaik in the 193hp e39 in germany.
Thanks for the info Jason Statham
