- We made some saw blades out of wood and then put them to the test to see if they could cut wood. It also cut metal.

Can wood cut wood?
*Adds resin*
You know you need to make a pure resin sawblade now, right?
Wood can Cut wood.... with Iron Wood.
Mybye sawdust in like a waterjet can cut wood.
P 8p7l LLP
It would actually explode if he did that cause it’s so brittle if he didn’t use resin
Literally beat me too it, I totally agree 😂
Interesting idea! If I ever need to start a fire by rubbing two pieces of wood together, I'll make a wooden saw blade.
..if u forgot ur matches this works perfet to start a fire...
its almost as fast as starting a fire with a bow and pin... 😁😁😁
hey daddy we can rub our wood together

Few things,
- Paperback veneer is definitely not the best option for this,
- Alternating the pieces at a shallower angle and 90 degrees is likely a better idea
- You CAN run a sawstop without the brake cartridge, you just need to use the bypass
- You should probably have MUCH more clamping force on the mold than you have been using
- I think the wood blade might benefit from a more aggressive, lower TPI pattern with more support for each tooth
And try not breathe in epoxy smoke for science
@@horsetowater oh well, that too but that’s less important
Also, worth trying a harder wood than mahogany. Mahogany is popular, in part, because it isn't TOO hard, and is thus easy to work with, while still being hard enough for most furniture.
As a general rule, materials of the same hardness can cut each other under as long as they are sharpened enough and not so brittle to break under the required stresses to begin to cut the other material.
I don’t think sharpness matters here the teeth are destroyed first pass. It’s the carbonization that makes it stronger so just use a flat blade with a harder wood than what you’re cutting. The friction is doing all the work here
That mumbling bit was classic

I like how the video unintentionally shows why carbon fiber (or really any) composites are so great. You can have a relatively weak fiber and a relatively weak matrix, but combine the two, and you have something with some incredibly strong mechanical properties.
I’m assuming you are using epoxy resin, making this an epoxy-cellulose 0/90 laminate composite. I would recommend PFKK as a resin as it is generally better than epoxy but… well… it’s extremely hard to source and work with if you aren’t a professional within the composites industry.

I would really like to see this done again but with two differences:
1. Mix the abrasive into some resin before putting it on the wood.
2. Put the abrasive resin mixture only where the blades would be so you can go thicker using less abrasive.
3. File the teeth so that they are actually sharp.
There are three types of people in this world.

2) And those who can't.

I worked in a sawmill, 4 years as a saw filer. Round saws. Angle of grind, Kerf, the thickness of teeth.
And .. feed and speed...very important. Heat will warp a saw blade. ❤ Kerf, carbide teeth, or dipped in epoxy and abrasives a few
Times will build up. The Kerf...don't feed to fast....😊 the abrasive is only on the sides of the tool... no cut for teeth..not
Necessary...🇺🇲✌👍
Filing teeth made out of abrasive resin so that they are "sharp". Genius on so many levels.
I just started at Alcom, a hauling trailer company, and I recently learned that the saw bolt has to tighten by screwing to the left because if it was a regular "rightytighty leftyloosey" the blade would come flyin off the saw! The blade must be tightened opposite of the direction the blade spins.
i've learned a lot of things from your channel, and videos such as these, and one of those things are that anything can cut through a lot of different materials if it can spin fast enough

not really the water jet channel anymore is it. its not the same.
Yes, it seems legit but then you realize it is silly, creative fun! I like that, too!
I love so much that you guys lean into the annoying negative comments. Never change fellas.
What if you were water-cooling the wood blade? Lots of metal-cutting machines already include a spout that shoots milky water (water with lubricant) onto the cutting area, maybe you can fit the wood blade to one of those machines and see if it lets you cut much faster. I don't think the wood would get particularly wet because at the speed you're going the water will basically turn to steam at the cutting surfsce.
this is single handedly made my day better!
the first blade was the best. cut out of scissors.

ngl it kinda stops being a wood sawblade when you fill it with literal diamonds
The irony really, sawblades have tungsten carbide tips and are sharpened with synthetic diamond as that’s hard enough. There is a rare exception some people have tried diamond tipped bandsaws but the cost is nowhere near worth it

Im somewhat surprised that first blade didn't cause a fire because to make a friction fire, you only need like a fraction of that rubbing speed (I assume).
it did, it caused lots of embers, which is all you get out of friction fire. if you'd covered those with dead grass, or even better, cotton, that'd start a fire
@@DianeSteeleAssuming you also blow on it.
Thanks for easting my time with this video.

I don't know if this would help, but when making fiber composites we do a layering direction of 0, 45, 90, -45, 0 which is called a quasiisotropic laminat. If you decide to try this again you could maybe layer the wood differently to make it mor balanaced. Not sure how much it would increase strength tho.
Reminds me of a project I once did that was basically the same concept but with a metal saw
It's videos like this that make me feel smarter than others. Thanks.
Hey, just a tip, you only needed that abrasive on the cutting part of the blade, for example, if you look at a tile cutting blade, with "diamonds" on it, it's basically got maybe 5, round blades, that simply have the abrasive on them.
Yeah... watching these guys do this with a complete lack of common sense is frustrating as hell.

You should try this with verawood. It's several times harder and more dense than mahogany. It'd be interesting to see if the hardness factor also makes it too brittle to use as a cutting blade. I'd also suggest quebracho, but it's really expensive and I doubt you could find enough that you'd want to waste it on something like this.

Would cooling help? Spray with one of them spraybottles, just water on the sawblade. You could also try a thin metalsheet in between the layers of wood. So, cooling plus 2 metalsheets plus 3 layers of wood. And maybe soft wood like fir is less brittle? Plus abrasive.
The polished pieces look cool, actually
We'll do five layers because five is a nice even number..
I really love this guy
@Waterjet Channel you can turn off the sawstop safety by turning the key (Right side of the control box) for a few seconds until the LEDs start flashing, then start the saw while still holding the key. I run one for work and need to do that occasionally to cut wet wood or metal veneer plywood. Might still need the brake cartridge in place but you'll probably be able to run the table saw with the wood blade.
That casual shot of the flaming motor killed me
The narrative sold it for me 😂 had to sub
I like the delivery and editing of this channel reminds me of suckerpinch. I feel it has a similar vibe but instead of programming solutions nobody has ever asked for you make dangerous contraptions.
Wow, it was really cool to see this, can you try it with the edges fined down?, like sharpened edges instead of those blocky ones, but for it to not snap easily you can put a lot of those fake diamond grains on it

10:08 by this logic wood tools should give you iron ore without deleting it if you mine it with a wooden tool
What if you were able to coat the edges/ teeth of the saw blade so its not just the sides that have the mineral. Maybe it will give the teeth enough strength to actually survive against cutting.
That‘s probably the best advertisement for a saw I have ever Seen

Try coating it in flex seal it's heat resistant and should hold "rigidity"
Because 5 is a nice even number 🤣
Who would have thought that rubbing wood against wood at high speeds could start a fire
ProTip: Using cedar or pine as the wood saw will make your experience more pleasant.
But seriously, this is way under engineered here & I bet you could think of ways to make it better. More homogeneous resin:to diamond ratio. Maybe a blade designed to minimize heat rather than cutting?
Also what would you call that metal & saw dust material?
If I were to do this, I think what I'd do is similar but I'd change the following things:
1 - I'd only make the core out of thin hardwood; the other layers would either be cardboard or paper. That would allow for a lot more cutting power, especially if you used a thin paper that tends to resist heat fairly well (like paper from a laser printer)
2. It would have no teeth, though I might add a dusting of abrasive on the outside of the blade so it almost looks like an angle-grinder blade
3 - I'd use the most heat-resistant epoxy I can find, though most of the best kinds need a degassing chamber
4 - I would add something other than just silicone carbide - ideally a material that would act as an abrasive at low to medium temperatures, but ablate at high temperatures. That might improve the integrity of the blade and let the exposed grit along the edge rip more material off of what you're cutting before the grit is ripped from the blade's edge.
A better question would be:
Can a Water jet show up on the Water jet channel??
I’m sure everyone wants to know the answer to that!
LOL, the last part dude!
