Every Way to Cut Cheap Wood (39 Methods)

- Join UA-cam maker Louis Weisz as he attempts to cut a 2x4 in every way possible. Which method is the best? Can there be a best method? What does 'best' even mean? Who says what's best? I wood say they're all pretty nifty (besides the ones that aren't).

Remember when humanity was civilised? Good times
Yep
True
This is one of my favorite videos. Period. I've rewatched it over the years and it still holds up. I've been thinking & I think that any of the ones that were said that got stuck - the steak knife for example - may be possible. If you cut a wider hole like done with the turbo plane, you'd be able to fit the blade further into the 2x4, and you might eventually cut it. The way to cut anything is to make a wide enough cut.
In the past, when a timber was called a 2x4 [or "two-by-four"], it actually measured 2 inches by 4 inches. Now, most timber is milled and planed to give it a little more of a finished look, and a little more of a consistent size and profile
Ok
European 2x4, which isn't technically called 2x4 but everyone still calls it that, is actually way closer to being 2x4 than actual 2x4, it's 48x98mm, only a few mm short of 51.2 and 102.4.

This was a great video and even though it's kind of old, I'd love to see it revisited in the form of maybe, how to put a hole in a 2x4. This was really informative though. I knew some of the types of saws but I've always wanted to at least learn what the other types are called. And it's good to know I was misusing at least a couple of names.

You can "cut" wood with an axe, by angekling it at 45° So you can kind of cut wood. You get a spike, but you get through it.
You *literally* get through the spike.
Well, a felling axe is designed to crosscut trees, while hatchets split along the grain, so those probably work way better
@@notme8232 an ax does work better, but in a pinch you can cut a 2x4 in 2 or three minutes, you just alternate every other hit between straight cuts and angled cuts, instead of the 2 45 then one straight you do with a ax

This is by far one of the best videos ever, you have put in practice so many theories I've pondered upon but always too afraid to ask for fear of sounding dumber than I truly am. Also, proves, if only to myself... That I was RIGHT. LMAO. Thank you!
Great video, Louis!
Handsaw is definitely my preferred method. When it's good and sharp it is almost effortless, and only a little slower than some power saws. I also like it because it's relatively quiet.
Another terrible way to do it would be with a mallet and chisel. Also other chopping devices, e.g., machete, kukri, broadsword.
Fire, though, was historically (or prehistorically) a pretty important way of cutting logs. When the other option is a stone axe, using fire is pretty attractive.
Actually I tried a mallet and chisel! It was SO bad though hahaha - I didn’t even think it qualified to be in the video 😂
Wish I had thought of the sword idea though! That’s a good one
While on the topic of weapons... You've heard of an axe, and you definitely heard of a battle axe, so why not use a battle axe?
It would probably work. Depending on the type of battle axe, it might not be built to take that kind of impact and the axe could be damaged. The blades can be thinner and wider on some battle axes. Scholagladiatoria did a video on this called "can battle axes chop down trees".
@@stevenreckling203 Well then... I did not expect a fellow nerd to drop by... Interesting
@@Weisz it's similar to a chisel, but have you tried a splitting wedge and a sledge hammer? The fastest way is to make three punctures on the wide side. Also a sledge ax would probably work if you have the muscle to swing it/ some experience with a ax or hatchet- cut once at a 45 angle then once at a straight angle, removing a triangle shaped chunk of wood, you can cut a 2x4 in about 3 minutes with that technique ( if I figure out the technical name for sledge axe I'll edit it in)

I didn’t think that I’d find entertainment in different ways of cutting wood, but here I am.
Actually, you probably can cut a 2 by 4 with a Dremel. You need a cutting bit. They sell one. It looks kinda like a drill bit, but it is actually for lateral movement. It allows for non-straight cuts. (Also works for enlarging a hole when you don't have an actual drill and the Dremel drill bits are to thin.)

"Great for cardboard"
So... a box cutter?
@@JohnSmith-gs2rv The ones i’ve seen and used in my life does.
box cutters use two sided blades and “olfa” (i call them snap blades” use snap off blades
In Australia we call these Stanley knives. I believe it is more of a top brand like the Olfa cutter but we call pretty much all handheld box cutters and such the same thing.
Did a little research and the BLADE name is actually Stanley! Interesting.
Why do I keep coming back to this every year, every month, this never ending cycle continues…
Hello. Thank you for your lovely video and time for filming this video, but I am not here for the purpose on commenting. I'm here to ask for an addition, if you're mentioning the use of resistance wood burning in the future. This type of wood burning conducts a voltage worth of 2000 volts. That type of electric circuit would kill any living being, that even slightly touches anything, that could have electric charges in it from the actual kit itself. It's actually so powerful, that a person would die before they even hit the floor. Thank you for reading, and I hope you add that warning in the future to not attempt that action at home, as any mistake is deadly. Lovely video, and lots of support from Bulgaria!
