      GrindhousePE oh man me too, I just tried welding up a front grille for my Datsun and I kept blowing through the material (thin square tubing) I honestly just gave up and put it together with brackets. Turned out pretty sweet though :)

    Thanks for the tip on SendCutSend. I've had problems finding a local laser cutting place to do small batch stuff, I just quoted some flanges and it seemed reasonable enough.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому +1

      That's honestly why I turned to them as well.. even getting local shops to call me back seemed like an uphill battle all the time.. the minimum orders for sendcutsend are really reasonable and they turned around the parts to my door in like a week

    Hi Dave. You are a really skilled fabricator, I'm really impressed and learning so much from your videos. This Z is going to be sick. Can't wait for your next video.
    How many gallons is that fuel cell? Do you have the model number? Thanks.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  2 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks so much! I'm very much still learning, but thank you. The fuel cell is a 15 gallon (26" x 17.875" x 9.5) Race Safe FCST. The full SKU is a bit of a nightmare because it selects the interior fuel pumps etc: RS2-FCST-RS215-FCST-20-0197-FP-11542-FP-11542-GK6X10

I love the design of the fuel cell cage with the dimpled fuel filter bracket and tow hooks! I also liked the video on the exhaust fab. The quality of your videos is really good too! Can I ask why you offset the previous opening in the floor and cut out the previous bolt holes that mated with the top flange on the fuel cell? Presumably that was already a clearance fit for the fuel cell as is...or am I missing something obvious?

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому +2

      Hey thank you! That's a good question with a complicated answer - being completely honest, when I first got the fuel cell I didn't really consider how I was going to mount it. I had cut the original floor out of it a long time ago, and had welded a large piece of sheet to replace the original spare tire/fuel tank area with a flat surface. When I got the cell, I centered it on the frame rails and cut the first hole. When I originally measured the frame rails, I didn't realize they weren't symmetrical with the body of the car, and when I went to fabricate the exhaust I realized the fuel cell was off center by about 1" (I couldn't tell this visibly because the back of the car was close to the back wall in my shop, and the places I did measure looked fine). It looked centered in the trunk, but the rails are offset to accommodate the original fuel filler neck. So before fabbing the exhaust, I had to widen the hole to put the fuel cell in the actual center of the body. This left a bunch of holes visible on the floor , and is one of the reasons the upper frame was initially built out of 2x1 rectangular tubing. As the design of everything matured, it made more sense to me to leave a lip of floor around the outer edge of the 2x1 frame, stitch weld the floor to the frame, then apply seam sealer on everything. The design has changed a lot since I first got the cell, and it's been a huge learning process along the way. Long story short, I'm making things up as I go and have no idea what I'm doing LOL

    What size dimple die did you use on the gussets

  • @borriboi

    Amazing project! @GrindhousePE Was wondering if you don’t run into any problems with your tungsten sticking out so far of the cup, or was it necessary for getting into those corners? At 9:56 it seems like a lot, or are you running more argon to compensate? Thanks!

    • @borriboi
      @borriboi 3 роки тому

      Oh and another question about the side toe hooks, if the car is pulled from the side, those plates will put a lot of torque on the weld seam, maybe some gussets could be of use for those as wel? Again, really loving the videos so far, quality editing and good content!

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому +1

      Eagle eye there and good points all around. The side hooks are primarily for show and when the car is strapped down. The rear hook would be used in any off track situations. I have been trying different tungsten stick outs to get ready for redoing my roll cage. You wind up with all sorts of crazy limited access welding a cage in car, so I try to get used to different torch setups whenever I can. I was running more flow at the time but I couldn't tell you what it was now

    No Nissan v8 like a vk56?

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому +1

      I love the way a VK56 sounds, and keeping things all Nissan would've been neat, but the vintage Datsun chassis doesn't really have the room for how giant that DOHC V8 is without having ground clearance, hood clearance, firewall, transmission tunnel, framerail, and strut tower clearance issues all at the same time.
