  • In today's Episode, I'm building some rear crash protection, a fuel cell mount, bash bar, jacking bar, and some tow plates for the rear of my LS Swapped Datsun 280z Project Car Build. I'm using the tube bender, tube notcher, and various other metal welding and fabrication techniques to build this rear structure for the car.

    great content. Well done. A custom built race car that kind of looks like a 280 Zx. Well-engineered and thought out!

    What type fuel cell is that? Seems to fit great in the Z.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому

      It does! I shopped for a long time finding a fuel cell with the best proportions to fit the Z. It's a Fuel Safe FCST 15 gallon

      @@GrindhousePerformance Thanks. I've been looking for a fuel cell that sits about flush with the floor and doesnt hang much lower than the rear panel. It looks odd when It does. The way you've done it look f-ing awesome tho!

    Looks really good. Some of it I wish I had done it that way....dammit.
    Tell me...I can see that like me...you have a bit of a tendency to over-engineer. What do you think/hope the finished car will weigh?

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому

      I'm not going to lie, I definitely peaked at what you'd done before building this one! I love how cleanly yours blends into the floor, I won't be quite as fortunate. Also, huge congrats finally getting some paint on the shell, looks absolutely killer! I've been coming to terms with me not getting paint on mine before this winter, temperature's been dropping too quickly and there's far too much to finish out.
      I haven't got the slightest idea where weight will fall on mine! I'd previously changed plans from my 6pt cage to just doing a 4, I didn't like how close some of the tubes were to the passengers for any kind of street driving. However I'm starting to get the idea in my head of redoing the 6pt cage entirely and adding tubes to the engine bay. The existing cage isn't welded to the car, and it never fit quite the way I'd wanted. If paints out of the question until spring, it'll keep me busy, and it'll ultimately be a better car at the end. Im no longer building this specifically for sanctioned racing events, but I'd like it to be able to pass safety wherever it might go. I do have scales, though. I might do some kindve competition with subscribers to guess the finished weight if folks would be interested

      @@GrindhousePerformance One of the big advantages to a full cage is the increase in rigidity, as Datsun Zs are notorious for having a "non-rigid" shell, and particularly considering we are dropping in more than 3X the HP and torque the car was designed for. But it adds a lot of weight. When I dropped mine to do all the final welding, I would guess it weighed at least 100#, and that was before I added the tubes to the front strut towers and some other tubes. My fuel cell structure is heavy also. If my car finishes out under 3000#, with fluids and all, I think I will be happy. I have deleted a lot of heavy items, but added some as well. Hard to say.
      I think having a full cage on a street driven car pretty much mandates using a 5 or 6 point harness as well. And all the bars that could possibly be struck in an accident need to be padded with proper FIA padding. Everything is a tradeoff. No matter what you do the car will be much safer than a motorcycle, which a lot of people ride every day....but still far more dangerous than any modern car. I can live with that.
      I am definitely tired of painting, but I am so close to the finish line I am pretty positive I will have it wrapped up this month. Then on to final assembly, which will be nothing but fun as far as I'm concerned.

      I'm certainly hoping for under 3000. A friend and me were able to lift the bare shell after we blasted it in the driveway. Shouldn't have, but it made me laugh. Many of the fully caged early Z's I've heard in the 26xxlb range, but I don't think I'll be that light using a factory dash and a full cage. What size tubing did you use for the cage? I originally did 1.75 .120 wall to meet Targa Newfoundland safety rules, but thinking if I build it again going with something more reasonable.

    • @johnshaft5613
      @johnshaft5613 3 роки тому +2

      @@GrindhousePerformance I used 1.5" .120" wall...which is allowed by SCCA rules for cars in this weight class.

      Not that I need to give you any advice, but take your time on reassembly. That fresh paint, especially if you didn't leave it out in the sun to bake afterwards, is going to be very soft for quite some time. Paint work is actually one of the parts of the build I'm looking forward to most, but now it's looking like I'll have to postpone unfortunately
