I definitely wasn't confident back then (the setting of the story) and it took me years of practice and constant feedback to finally develop my voice and package my message in a way that would make people want to listen for more. Had no idea what I was doing and just going by what my heart told me (not always the smartest thing to do). But thank you :) I do wish there were more people, in general--not just young or old, who speak their minds and go after the things they want in life.

You keep producing videos like these and I have no doubt your sub count will move to the high 5 figures then take on 6 figures and beyond. You are expected to do the "standard things" that the majority is doing. This is even more true with Asian families, where kids are typically given 3 options "Doctor, Lawyer, or Engineer", regardless of what their actual interests are. To not walk the well trodden path of the majority sends off alarm bells to everyone living comfortably in their box. When you told your GC you didn't want to go to college, the easiest solution was to "guide you" by telling you to take a couple of years off and try it your way to see how you like it. It doesn't make sense that you have to go straight to college from HS without a break it's that's not what you want. If many cases, that would be more beneficial to have folks experience life and work full time before deciding on college, as that would give them more motivation and direction for what they actually want to do. One of the worst things I've seen is when someone goes to college just because it's "the thing to do", not know what they want to do so get into a major that's not very employable, rack up a big debt, then graduate to being unemployed or underemployed. When you step outside the lines, it's unfortunately understandable why your parents couldn't help, as they don't have the experience in this area, and your "status quo" friends think you are making a mistake because you're steeping outside the lines. If higher wealth circles, kids are encouraged to step outside the box and walk different paths. There was a study done that showed that the the wealthiest people had "C" grade averages in school while the "A" graders were doing okay, but not "crazy rich". This is because the future CEO's and company founders were not afraid to risk good grades to have a more well rounded life experience of other activities but the "A" graders lived life by sticking to the rules and were inhibited from taking the risks needed to start a company or move into top management. There's an old saying- tell your friends your "give up" goals, but keep your "go up" goals to yourself. The reason is "go up" goals makes your friends ask themselves if they should be trying harder for themselves. They feel judged even though you did nothing. They have two choices- to be motivated to to more themselves, or to "demotivate" you so they don't have to try. Just like you said- it's easier for some people to pull others down than to join them in the climb up. It's clear only a small fraction of the population owns their own business and is financially independent. Most of these people got there by taking the road less traveled. That's not to say, every different path leads to fantastic success, but being brave enough to do something outside of the status quo can lead to much greater rewards, and the option to try out the "status quo" path is always there afterwards. That's a good point, family and friends don't need to know about the smart financial decisions. It definitely does take a couple to a few years to get there. My high school experience was similar to yours too. I had to apply to get into it and my friends thought I was abandoning them :p So, I went anyway. College is totally overrated. My aunt only had a high school education and she now owns her own beauty salon, 5 restaurants, and multiple properties she collects rent from. I have a classmate who only had a high school education and did MacDonald's and restaurant work, rose up to become supervisor and makes over $60k a year and is now close finishing his bachelor's. It's really about what you want to do and your plan of action. Another inspiring video Sis!
tbh only go to college if you get a free ride or get paid to go to college. my family is pretty poor so I went to a local state college that paid me 12k a year yes they paid me to go to school and graduate with at least a 3.0 gpa.
My family is narcissistic in nature. They think college is the golden egg. What golden egg is there if I had to take out 150k plus interest in student loans to make 40k a year? Alot of chinese families i know have their children take out thousands of dollars for this. My family has yet to say college was a scam
I told stories like your aunt's and classmate's to those kind of people in my video, and those are stories of normal everyday people... not Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg who made it big. They wouldn't hear it! They think people like your aunt just "got lucky."
@@AnnieMargaritaYang Yeah I feel you. They think it's all luck, and sometimes they do get a break I will admit. Problem is higher education is too saturated now. You need more than just a degree (and now going back to college is easier than ever) and experiences are harder to get. Believe me, if I could go back, I would have delayed college until later.
@@JK20239 if you're going to college to become a doctor, lawyer, accountant, engineer, or some profession that requires it then it may be worth your time and money.
Wow! Everything you said is what I've been learning. My ex gf and best friend of 6 years was Chinese and she used to push me into university even though I didn't finish high school! Naturally I'd bomb each time and drop out. Looking back she was obsessed with the idea. It was like the holy grail or something. I had to survive working part-time trying to do this because I was already in my late 20s. The lack of money from my part caused even more tension. Honestly, ANY full-time job no matter even if it was cleaning toilet bowls with the correct lifestyle to match it would have been far superior than what I was doing and I actually think we would never have split up if I'd applied your principles. We were both naive and I just didn't have the capacity to be what she wanted me to be. I just could not deliver. In the end, all that drama, the poverty, the time wasted and the huge debt created in the process, all in vain because she became sick of trying with me, longing for a man she could brag about to her superficial Asian college-educated friends, she dumped me and made the ultimate career move and had an affair with her boss..... Then it backfired on her too, because he dumped her, now she too is in a state of depression and single ...... After a long period of about a year, feeling depression to the point of phycal sickness, and impulsive, wreck less spending to self medicate, I'm starting to heal and I now am truly starting to see what you have apparently known for a long time and I applaud your way of thinking. I hope you can create more content like this. I don't know how to explain, but the wrong thinking has implications that go far beyond just your bank account... I was a naive idiot, but my ex gf was a slave to the mindset that your friends and careers Councillor had, and that might be well and good for some people, to the wrong people it could result in devastating effects on not just yourself but the those closest to you. I really enjoy your videos, keep it up!
You are right. It affects more than just the bank account. Sounds like this really affected your mental health. I hope you can heal and find better people to surround yourself with, people who are actually supportive of your life choices.
Thank you for this valuable video you're very intellegent and so mature...I wish I would've made better choice about college because I'm one of those ppl in debt with loans and no career. It saddens me everyday. I wish I was your friend, lol, you have the qualities of a leader in your social circle with your strong mindset. 👍💖😊
Hi Annie! Once again I’m back watching your videos. I truly admire the hard work you put into your videos. 30 hours spent on one video alone shows your commitment to your work and to your viewers. I really appreciated all you shared in this video and loved how you were vulnerable and opened up about what you went through from your peers and family regarding your decision not to initially attend college. You caused me to think a lot about my current state. I’m beginning to save money finally but I hate my corporate America job. I’m hoping to be able to save money so I can actually start working doing what I love. I need to come up with a plan of how much I need to save but I’m just not sure how much that amount should be. Thank you for your thought provoking content. As always, I wish you the best!
So do you want to know exactly how much you would need to successfully make a career change? Would the career change be another job, or a venture that you start on your own? Or are you looking to retire early (like in your 30s and 40s) like some people in the personal finance space so then you can do anything you want, possibly not even have a career? How much you need depends on your answers.
Annie Margarita Yang Thank you so much for your reply Annie. Well, I’m in my late 20’s and have no problem working but I feel kind of like you when you were in High school. I don’t know exactly what I want to do but I know I love the elderly and would love to either teach some classes for them at the community college or maybe open up my own assisted living facility. Of course I would love to retire early but I think getting out of my current administrative corporate job is my priority.
Hello Annie, new subscriber here, and I can relate to so many of your experiences. I’m Vietnamese and 48, but the social and familial pressures remain the same today as it was for me as a young woman in the 80s-90s, trying to navigate through life with little guidance, but a lot of pressure not to “fail.” I failed, a lot. I was ambitious and driven, but not to walk the same tired path of all my siblings (7 of them) before me. The backlash was real, and it was harsh. When you mentioned having nightmares of those pivotal yrs and the convos with people who were ostensibly supposed to be guiding you, I CAN RELATE. My dad/family didn’t help me financially in college, and nearly stopped talking to me for NOT majoring in Engineering (I was PoliSci & English). People “bettering their own lives” requires a lot of truth-telling to themselves, and you’re right, it’s far easier to constrain others from improving themselves, than it is to break free from the emotional/social constraints that hold back most people from truly growing and evolving. Also loved your point about choosing your social circle with INTENTION. You have a great head on your shoulders already at 25, and I wish I had had the same clarity of vision as you when I was in my 20s! Love your idealism and your willingness to share your own personal stories to inspire and encourage others. There is no better use of our lives than to help and encourage others!!
I loved your video. I loved your advice about not telling people what you are doing. I am 41 and the social pressure is still there to spend spend spend instead of being wise with your finances.
you're amazing. such an inspiration. watched a few of your videos today. ☺ you're very strong willed and your character would always get you places. go girl
Thanks for your advices Annie! You have so much value in all your videos that im sure your will grow your channel fast to 100k and be the greatest Saver/Entrepreneur on UA-cam!!! Keep what you doing, I love it!!!
Good stuff, I always find that forming the habit of savings and investing is hard but once you develop it, it locks in. Also, automatic savings like a 401K kind of takes on a life of its' own because you never see it so it removes the temptation of using it on wasteful expenditures.
Sorry, I posted this without watching the whole video and now I see it is more about the perceptions of other people- which is also an important topic. For some reason, that never matters to me but maybe because I am older. I see people at work that spend every dollar they make and it doesn't bother me because I know down the road, our lives will be vastly different.
@@AnnieMargaritaYang I tried a lot of ways to be 'entrepreneurial.' I started a few businesses and failed. I don't believe everyone is an entrepreneur and I definitely cannot sell. If I ever sold anything, I"d always feel like I was cheating someone. One thing I think everyone can do is invest. That is the great equalizer. So, when I had time to step away from some of the businesses I had created, I was able to study investing. That was a huge game changer for me. When people like Dave Ramsey, Brian Tracy, David Bach, , Patrick Bet- David, etc all said that anyone can be wealthy through investing , I went all in. I made it a game. If you invest regularly, you are virtually guaranteed a successful long-term horizon. Keep up the good work, Annie!
Your story is so impressive! You are very strong and brave. Thank you for sharing. Everyone has an opinion especially parents. Unfortunately, when we were younger adults always think that they know what is best for your life or finances. When you were talking about your guidance counselor, they are limited in their perspective because that is what they had to do to get a job/career for themselves. Also, there may have been some other kind of kickback (commission) to the counselor from the school that you applied to or the statistics that the high school you went to wanted to keep (ex: 100% of our graduates are 100% college graduates) which is connected to their funding from the state. Unfortunately, a lot of colleges and high school are also businesses that are looking only for profits, not focused on bettering students. If students graduate with college debt that means that people will be forced to work at a job or create a business. Plus the living expenses that come with growing up, this feeds the national economic system. That is why the government started funding student loans, the money is in turn going back to them. So they have guaranteed money coming into the system. It is really bad, that are system is based on debt, lies, and brainwashing. Congrats on being debt free from college loans, you are not enslaved to the system.
I like your videos a lot. I’m pretty frugal and saving 50% of my income. I love watching videos like yours for different perspective and tips. I invest in income property and the rent net income per month pays for my condo’s expenses, so I can save more! Lol anyways keep making videos please 😊
Studying abroad does actually cost a lot of money 😬 also $40,000 is a lot of money for college, there are definitely other colleges out there that are cheaper than that
Revenge is an excellent motivator. How great is this? That whole guidance counselor interaction must have been brutal. You are so wise. Why do people have to criticize what they don’t understand. Great advice. Nobody needs to know your business. No one. Especially dating partners. Seriously.

@@nej4340 I didn't consider CUNY Honors because you have to be graduating senior to get in. I had a two year gap before going to college. It wasn't just about the money... it didn't make sense to me at all to spend four years in college unsure whether I would find my passions there. All my life I only knew academia. *"Why you Chinese people have to be so cheap about everything?"* Bruh, you have no idea how proud I am! After just working for 2 years, I've saved and invested over $85K while my coworkers are still drowning in student loan!! Who else is proud to be frugal?? 🔥
I really appreciate your words and experience. Thank you very inspiring and powerful.. I have been looking for answers about this issue. Can someone with a low income buy a home how to get this done were to start if ur a single woman. I wasn't sure where to start planning but I'm going to start saving up specially after what iv heard from u in many videos its possible to save up a good amount of money to get a home some day . I have saved up in the past for traveling but I completely forgot about it and that it worked greatly. I was never prepared to ever live by my self own a home because of my upbringing and culture. And alot of ppl keep telling me that I have to go back to school get a higher degree to make more money if I want to own a home someday like that's the only way . But after hearing you I'm so inspired and hopeful about my future. I am sincerely grateful to you for sharing your story I admire your courage confidence and smarts 🙏👍❤
It truly depends on your area. Property prices vary a lot. When I was living in Lubbock TX, you could get a nice 3bd single family home for $80k to $100k. All you need is $5k for down payment and closing costs and finance the rest if you are first time homeowner. Saving $5k on low income is absolutely doable in that area (my SO and I combined saved more than that in just 6 months) and the monthly mortgage + costs of owning is the same as what you would pay for rent! If single, then I would double that time and say it takes a year to save for the down payment. We live in Boston now and plan to buy next year, but a condo would cost us $350k to $400k. We are putting down $20k, and yes, we will pay PMI, but by the time we save 20% down, prices would have risen by more than 20% in Boston. So in my kind of area, you would never be able to own if you are single and low income--only middle class and up.
Thanks Annie for replying. Your right Boston is pretty expensive , here as well I live in boulder Colorado and the houses here are very expensive .. but 20 min away from boulder or in lovelend there are good prices around 200k , I wasted a year not saving anything . i was focused on spirituality on knowing my self and it was the most rewarding investment, even thou I didn't pay attention to my physical life but I'm starting now . Iv been watching alot of videos to get a sense of direction.. and I have listened to one about investing in owning a property and renting it to make passive income steady flow. Which would give a great sense of security but then where would I live . I think what u said about saving money is the smartest way to go for me right now. Alot of great minds talk about saving 10% of ur income. But I am going to try and follow ur example and save 30-50 % . I feel I lived such a wasteful life because I didn't have any guidance in managing my money. But I'm glad I found ur videos and some others . Its about time . My family are helping me now but its temporary and every time they ask me what I'm planning for my future. I felt so lost I had no idea what I was going to first, buy a car ,get a driver's license ,go back to school .. but I'm not motivated because I will have debts . And I need to save up as much as I can for as long as I can then decide what to do next . And I'm sincerely grateful for ur words it was an inspiring wake up call .
YOLO is a pet peeve of mine. I see people in their 20s use it to justify irresponsible spending. My response is, "You live everyday" so everyday, you have to deal with the consequences of decisions you made from claiming YOLO.
Annie Margarita Yang - so true...we live everyday, and if we’re blessed, there may be many “tomorrows” that YOLO people don’t appreciate or plan for when they focus on justifying their indulgence of immediate impulses. Oftentimes, the excessive lifestyles are just attempts to paper over, or escape whatever emotions are truly afflicting them (feelings of inadequacy, scarcity mindset, etc). There is such an intense emphasis on immediacy these days. I like the old saying, “The path of least resistance leads to crooked rivers, and crooked [people].” We create our own suffering (debt/depression) when we live and spend recklessly.
Interesting .. In my case ,when I was married I was usually broke n now after being divorced for 15 years n staying single ..i have all I want n I'm debt free...imagine that....
Paying for boyfriend is just one of the stupid choices anyone makes here and there. We should always better ourselves because we want to, not just to beat a boy.
OMG, people should do some research on Craigs list first before they spend the college money. BS in accounting know Excel and Quickbook and all gets pay like $20 per hour.

Just watched the entire video, very informative, very high quality and well done. Great job Annie
Thanks
misery loves company. I learned this years ago.Make your own path in life .Love your channel. subd.
Thanks sis ! Needed this ♥️
Thank you so much Annie ❤️
Wow thank you for sharing your story. :) I am so glad I am not alone.
Thank you, Annie, you have inspired me. :) you are an amazing young lady. i am a Chinese too.
Lots of words of wisdom at a young age. I am twice your age... and everything you said is SPOT ON. Don’t fear to take the road less travelled.
You are very courageous, awesome!
Thanks :)
It might be because you are older. When did you start developing your saving and investing habit?
Thank you for the advice.
How awesome to be able to go to a friends house and spend friendship quality time together. Sounds very family value style. Other ideas?
Keep doing this thanks for the helpful life incorporation changes for better life and prosperous living
Positive lecture.smart girl reach for ur goal.
A smart girl!!! Well done.
I love this channel so much ❤️😍
Good job, it feels good to be weird, normal sucks. Great content thank you for sharing and providing great tips
I like your videos a lot. I’m pretty frugal and saving 50% of my income. I love watching videos like yours for different perspective and tips. I invest in income property and the rent net income per month pays for my condo’s expenses, so I can save more! Lol anyways keep making videos please 😊
Great, valuable and motivational information
You are wise beyond your years!
If you feel alone being frugal feel the same way when you're living it up and give those who thought the worst of you a shit sandwich
Seriously.
I think they just try to bring you down to their level instead of trying to rise up with you
If there ever was someone who could do anything, I think it's YOU!
Watching this for motivation today
it's 7/21/20. I love watching you. I think I have watched 4 videos so far. Cantonese, Bk represent!
glad you can relate!
@@AnnieMargaritaYang did you consider CUNY honors back then? free tuition and a 4 year degree :) Several classmates turned down Cornell for CUNY Honors and a free apple laptop in my hs '07 graduating class. Love you mucho, I wish I was as bright as you are at your age and well spoken like you are today- I'm a couple yrs older than you are, still a millennial. Your vid inspired me to take a ToastMasters class.
@@nej4340 I didn't consider CUNY Honors because you have to be graduating senior to get in. I had a two year gap before going to college. It wasn't just about the money... it didn't make sense to me at all to spend four years in college unsure whether I would find my passions there. All my life I only knew academia. Honestly if I went straight to college and went straight into a middle class job, I would not be making my UA-cam videos today.
I love ur videos. It helps me a lot.
Based on these scripts I would totally watch every episode you make of you playing your family and acquaintances.
HA! That's on my bucket list.
*"Why you Chinese people have to be so cheap about everything?"*
Bruh, you have no idea how proud I am! After just working for 2 years, I've saved and invested over $85K while my coworkers are still drowning in student loan!! Who else is proud to be frugal?? 🔥
lol yeah, I see people commenting your videos about you living in a car temporarily. I'm like, wtf, Cherry is saving money!!!!
@@AnnieMargaritaYang omg yass!! I was testing to waters to see how minimally I can live with!
I got recently got a credit card with 1k 19% limit and interest. I just wanna start slowly building credit because I'm at zero.
I would spend only $100 on that card every month and pay it in full no matter what. Don't ever go more than 30% of your limit ($300).
It is a loss for society when an intelligent child doesn't want to increase its education and the chances a high education brings with it.
You are awesome and very inspiring.
Great video ..to answer your question in video.. Things like "Yolo"... To spend my money on people that have more income than me...
Pls try some reading on Robert Kiosaky; he faced similar situation ...💖
This video is so nice it helped me a lot on my recent video on saving 100$ in 20 minutes!
You are awesome
Paying for boyfriend is just one of the stupid choices anyone makes here and there. We should always better ourselves because we want to, not just to beat a boy.
OMG, people should do some research on Craigs list first before they spend the college money. BS in accounting know Excel and Quickbook and all gets pay like $20 per hour.
