Wood Turning a Gnarly Stump
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- I woodturned this natural edge bowl from a pretty interesting stump I found. The wood had a lot of cracks, so putting it on the lathe probably wasn't the safest decision... But I fell in love with the grain and colors of the wood, so I was determined to finish this project. I wouldn't recommend this to a beginner woodturner though.
I kept the lathe speed low for most of the project, so it took a long time to finish the bowl. But I'm really happy how it turned out, and it might be the coolest thing I've woodturned so far!

Very cool! I was cringing the whole time hoping it held together for you. Also a nice choice to keep it natural. Honestly was expecting a resin project going into this video. Great work!
I was cringing the whole time too haha! I was really hoping to keep it natural, but I kept expecting it to have to add resin to keep it stable. Really glad I didn't have to
Wow! You are a very skilled wood turner.
An enigmatic artist.
The coolest bowl I ever did see!
I'll let you keep it ;)
very lovely and elegant
Nicely done!
Thank you!
Excellent work, great natural shape with really good grain and colours
Thank you so much 😀
Outstanding
Stunning
Luxurious work!
Excellent piece!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing, nice piece. Full view and Like
Thanks Allen!
Very nice. I love it.
Thank you!
Thats a gnarly looking bowl. Ive never turned something that off balance on my lathe. I only have 2 speeds i can use. I'm working some angles to get a better lathe but not sure of it will pan out.
Your lathe only has 2 speeds??? That's amazing you can make the stuff you do
Haha yeah I could get a 3rd working if I found the proper belt for it but i didnt have any luck when i first got it so i just got use to it. It is a bit limiting but i have made it work. VS will be a must on the ol' upgrade hopefully...
Absolutely Awesome looking piece, love the natural shape. Was hoping it did not blow up on you. You did a great job taking your time.
Thanks so much
Dear friend - not bad at all, but I think you should progress to gouges. You may be in for some pleasant surprises. Kind regards.
May i know the name and model of your wood turning machine, plzz
Gutted you didn’t fill in the knobbly gnarly bits with a coloured resin before shaving it down 🥺
I considered it, but I really liked the natural color.
"I wouldn't recommended this to a beginner woodturner"- so if You finished it and it didn't fly away than You are advanced woodturner 💪 Keep going. The bowl is great.
Or just a really lucky beginner ;) But yes I think I did better on this one than I could have done a month ago, so I'm slowly getting better!
What did you use for the finish
It's called butcher block conditioner. It's a mix of mineral oil and beeswax. This is the specific one i use: amzn.to/2oAFPP6
Klaassss
Should've put it in resin
Excellent job and the perfect finish! I know sometimes I use too much resin in my projects and it is good you chose not to in this case. Couldn't be turned better!
Thank you! I had to resist the urge, but I loved the natural color so much that I didn't want to distract from it
Nice piece...
Thanks for share...
What did you sand it to?
I think I did 1500 on this one
Love it. I was worried about those cracks but it held. Very nice.
Thanks, I was worried about the cracks too haha!
Agreed - "it might be the coolest thing" you've turned yet so yeah, 'tis easy to see why you're in love. With the piece. It is beautiful, and not for the faint-at-heart. Way to go Drew 👍🏆😃 -Mike
Thanks Mike! It was several hours of tense turning, but very worth it! New video from you coming soon??
@@CookWoodworks I like that "Tense Turning" - will add it to my turner's book of phrases; you in ? Yeah, got over 10 hrs of 1 stupid bowl to edit. But am working on a 12x4 economy bowl that is taking some planning.
Haha I'm in! Looking forward to seeing the bowls

SUPER 😲😃👍
Love the speed you work at.. Underlay underlay.
Beautiful project, thanks
woeeeewww
.. so perfect this form... color... amezing
imagine this piece is like a little hat from a little lamp ..
Haha yes it could look good as a lamp shade!
That is absolutely gorgeous! I want to do that too!
👍👍👍
Thanks!

Useful at kitchen table for fruits! Great
Nice shape and beautiful colors.
Wow that stump turned out beautiful Awesome job. Can't wheat to see more.
Thanks!
turned out nice. do you know what type wood it is? why didn't you use a mortise on the bottom instead of a tenon? you could have gotten more height out of your piece.
greg33033 looks like some kind of eucalyptus.
A very different piece, not one I'd try but it was great to see a bit if virtual firewood turned into a thing of beauty.
Note to self...don't throw away the stump! That is one pretty piece!
One superb creative job..
Wood turning.
The only way to improve the value of something by removing most of it.
Wow, you are so gifted.
Thank you, that's very kind

Very nice bowl!
this may not win me many points, but, I'd be inclined to put this in a batch of crystal clear acrylic (clear, to not detract from the cool wood pattern), just to get a "full sized" vessel out of the turn, and to protect the wood. I know mixing wood an resin is anathema to some. Sincerest apologies to that group.
beautiful turning! I was afraid it was going to explode on you, while you were thinning out the walls. glad it held.
I thought about some type of resin. I did make a similar bowl with resin about a month ago and it made the bowl better I think. Thanks for watching!

That stump cleaned up nicely. You had a lot of material off... what remains is spectacular. Nice work! 👍
Yeah I thought I could make a cool shape out of it, but I didn't know how great the grain and color would be. Thanks for watching!
Cook Woodworks looks great to me!!
Beautiful
Beautiful
Absolutely beautiful... well done...
😅
👍👍👍👍
👌💕
Very nice work man! I was hoping it wouldn't break on you too...
How long did that take?
Thanks. This one was a long time because I had to go slow, maybe 8 hours of total work
@@CookWoodworks right on, that was gonna be my guess... Even 8 hrs is well worth it though, that's a beauty!
Nice 💪
Thanks Jake. Just saw your last one, that vase came out really nice!
@@CookWoodworks thanks 👍
Very elegant and beautiful. Cheers
Thanks!
Молодец. Гап йук. Соз жок. 👍👍👍
This was my first video of yours that I watched and it was enough to get me to subscribe. Outstanding editing and excellent use of advancing the speed. Very nice bowl. Great job! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Too bad sanding doesn’t really go that quickly in real time.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! If I showed real time sanding I'd have zero subscribers haha!
Nicely done. Thanks
Looks very Autumnal like an oak or maple leaf . Nice work . 👍
Thank you!
Sehr gut gemacht!
Good job and well turned and an excellent joice of finish too.
Thank you! The oil did a nice job of bringing out the color I think
Very elegant. Thank you very much for sharing.
Thanks for watching
Wow you were cutting a whole lot of air
Amazing piece, I was cringing the whole last part of the video as it got thinner and thinner. Looks beautiful!
Thanks! I was definitely a little nervous at the end
Love it. I would really like one like that.
A nice outlook . Cheers .
Thank you
beautiful piece. What finish did you use?
Thanks. It's called butcher block conditioner, this is the one I use: amzn.to/2oAFPP6
Great bowl, nice work

Watching a Comercial. Way to many advertisements. You have lost me, sorry.
*too
AWESOME.what is the model/name of your lathe? i like it? any issues with it. pros and cons?
It's a Jet 1221. I love it. Only con is that I need a bigger one for bigger logs haha
