  • I've been hearing a lot of bad reviews on the Dewalt 20v chainsaw. I love the tool. Many people complain that they are smoking. I think the people complaining are the ones smoking as the fix is so simple. keep your Dewalt 20v chainsaw, it's awesome.

    @Karell Thanks for great info. One thing I just discovered, after a lot of cutting my chain brake would no longer lock in the operating position. It turns out that after you remove the cover, bar and chain, there's a plastic plate beneath those. It's held in place by six T15 screws - remove those and the whole plate comes off, revealing the bar adjustment mechanism and the brake mechanism. The rubber boot around the brake doesn't make a perfect seal, and mine was jammed full of damp sawdust. Cleaned that all out and the brake works fine now. Maybe the topic of another video? I didn't find this procedure anywhere else on UA-cam.

      Thank you for this information. I love my chainsaw and use it often. It has recently started smoking, stopping, and popping off the chain which is highly frustrating and eats up a lot of time. I cleaned mine out which helped then went back to cutting. It stopped smoking, but then the washer above the sprocket broke in half. When I looked at the sprocket it was grooved out on the top half. I'm assuming that the clogged brake and sprocket worked together to cause the smoke. I just ordered replacement parts so crossing my fingers that I can fix my chainsaw. It's been a workhorse.

      If you strip it down a bit more, separate the body you can access the oil tank which is poorly manufactured get some gasket sealant and seal round all the parts connecting to the tank,oil leaks stop. Also access the gearbox you will find all the lubricant in one corner while gears are dry so spread it out and will run much smoother. There is a full vid on here on how to strip it down and reassemble, easier than you’d think

    Hello from Canada. I just bought a 20v Dewalt chainsaw (actually a replacement for on that someone took from my parked car via a smashed rear window. ) So I'm not a newbie to chainsaws nor Dewalt. Yet I encountered the same problem and I did not want to force the chain brake. But I went straight to your video and OMG you had the answer. Now I feel rather sheepish for such a simple solution. Thanks again and back to cutting!

    Hello my friend.
    I have a close friend of mine, like this Dewalt chainsaw. He had no problems. He just uses it very carefully. However, it is normal for such tools to malfunction. The important thing is that it does not cause frequent and chronic failures. Dewalt products are also among the least problematic brands in the world. I watched a good informative video. Thank you for this useful information. See you. stay healthy and safe. Merry Christmas. Greetings.

    Thanks muchly, this is hard to explain in print. Push forward on the hand guard all the way and then pull back all the way and release. Now you can power the saw, press the safety and then squeeze the power trigger. You can also install a 5/8 - inch plumbing ring in the slot on the oil plug to stop leaks. And replace the 12" bar with a new 14 or 16 inch bar and a new chain. Quiet, light weight, wonderful saw.

    Thank-you for making this informative video. I received this chain saw from my son for Christmas(2021)and could not get it to work unless I held the brake in the forward position(1 soft click). After watching this video…no problem.
    DeWalt needs to hire you to write and produce their manuals as this was not made clear at all in the paperwork that came with my chainsaw. You just saved both my son and myself the time of having to drive back to Home Depot to exchange this. Thanks again.

    I agree! I too only have DeWalt electric tools. After I had used my tool a while the “kick back” guard had not been activated and when I started to use it “with guard forward” the motor wouldn’t run. IMO there was not enough emphasis on the fact that IF THE SAW DOESN’T OPERATE WHEN THE TRIGGER IS PULLED, ACTIVATE THE KICKBACK GUARD. When all you have used in the past is a gas operated saw, the kickback guard has to be pushed forward to start it. I wound up buying a second saw, which I’m okay with because of this failure to understand the operation.

    • @TheWoodenRider
      @TheWoodenRider  Рік тому

      It’s crazy that I never caught up to that distinction of forward gas and back electric! Thank you for that observation, I’m not a big user of gas chainsaws so never registered that.

    You should do a follow up video for those of us who pull it all the way back and the saw still doesn't start. Used it once and made about a dozen cuts total and had to pull the trigger 2-3 times for it to start working, once it starts it runs fine. Mine's going in for warranty work tomorrow. This is the only Dewalt tool that I own that I regard as junk straight out of the box. When it works it works great, but when it's dead after about an hours use, not so great.

    I got the larger Dewalt saw, and it smoked and stopped and wouldn't restart. My memory is that I pulled the safety all the way back, and that's the way all the chainsaws I've ever used have worked. After watching this video I'm going to dig the saw out of the garage and check it. Maybe I broke the brake somehow or safety switch somehow.

    UPDATE: I was wrong about the warranty. It’s 3 years, so repair to the switch was covered under warranty. I sent it to the repair center and now UPS has lost the saw in transit. I filed a claim with the carrier and now Dewalt is sending me a new saw. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

    Is it possible to damage the tool if you don’t figure out why it is smoking before it quits working?

      Possible but I’m definitely not an expert

    Thanks for the video. Has there been reports of that safety brake switch going bad? Mine will run like 2 seconds and die as if the safety switch cuts it off. Like the battery just died, as they do not slow down, they just drop off dead when the battery is depleted. I have tried a number of 5ah and 8ah batteries. I'm bummed, as I love the saw. This shut off is similar to when you try to start it with pressure on the chain. It seems to have a safety switch for that purpose as well. Maybe I need to clean all the moving parts, it may be gummed up. Thanks again!

      @TheWoodenRider  3 роки тому

      Hey dude
      I used a 5Ah battery and it lasts for a bit over 1 hr of non stop cutting
      The oil will usually be empty before the battery
      If you pull the brake all the way back and it doesn’t need to be held like in the video you did it right and it should not stop
      Did you try different batteries?
      I find anything under 5Ah will die crazy fast so I avoid
      Hopefully this helps you out

      @@TheWoodenRider Yes, I have had great luck with this saw for over a year. Just went to use it yesterday, and could not get it to move more than a second or two. I may check the four wires at the battery connector, as I see that is a common one for dewalt tools that have heavy vibration. I have a small collection of 5ah and one big 8ah, that I use on the chainsaw, pole saw and blower

    I consider that a design defect. The micro switch which enables the motor to run should sense if the brake is applied, not the position of the safety handle… How could they design, build, and sell a saw with safety that’s tricking so many people to run the motor with the brake on? That should not even be possible.

    • @TheWoodenRider
      @TheWoodenRider  3 роки тому +1

      I can see the argument being partially valid
      You have to consider that anything mechanical can always be half applied
      But to your point they should have made the rock point further on

    My dewalt is dead because of a 50 cent switch that went bad. In fact, it is the switch that you hear clicking in this video when you slightly move the brake. If that switch dies, the saw won't wont, period.

      The bar has a hole positioned directly above the threaded stud that holds the bar tight. This is where the oil enters the bar groove. Make sure this hole is not clogged with sawdust.

  • @johnster23

    The oil is not gravity fed and the tank has a pressure relief valve, anyone can check by looking at the parts diagram. Making up facts that arent true and acting like you know what you're talking about, when you don't, isn't a very good look.

    • @johnster23
      @johnster23 Рік тому +1

      The tank has a seam from the mould going through the openings creating a bad sealing surface, if your saw has a leaking problem you have to use an oil-rated sealant along the sealing surfaces.
