Bought a Ryobi, years ago. Burned out after maybe 30 hours. Bought one of these today, to fill the gap between a folding saw, and my 1969 Homelite suicide machine. It does electric saw things. The stuff it was made for, pretty well. Good tips, my man..
been using a couple of them on my orchard for a few years. i love these saws. once you fix the leak problem at least. i put a 14" oregon bar and chain on one of them which i use for larger double handed cutting. i use the original one handed. i love these saw.
Dewalt just released a ne top handle arborist saw in the 60v line. They had an 18 inch and 20 inch professional saws come out in the same line a couple years back.
I have the 20v 12" like your saw and I also bought the 60v 16"and upgraded it to the 18" both saws are amazing and I work for a tree service so they get used. I also have a Milwaukee m12 reciprocating saw and I tried the big blade on it and it done ok. It's definitely not a replacement for the dewalt 12" saw. I also put an Oregon 14" bar and chain on it and it became a better saw and plenty of power. I probably use it more than the 60v. LOL just thought I would share this with you. Hope it helps.
Long time viewer-don't comment much but I added a Makita 10" to my repertoire this year as a truck saw, (don't generally keep a full sized saw with gas in the truck); but this baby is small enough to live under the seat and works in a bind. I find myself using it regularly over a gas saw for trail work clearing, too. I love the modified bag. Thanks for that.
The new dccs623 8” pruning chainsaw is pretty sweet! I also use the 16” flex volt chainsaw, & the dcps620 pole chainsaw. All this from a diehard Stihl chainsaw user for over 35 years. The battery saws do have a place for the homeowners.
The 'Baby' Dewalt chain saw is now the 8" Dewalt pruning chainsaw. I like the three 12" 20 volt saws I use. You need to store them sideways so the oil fill port is up. The saw won't leak nearly as much in storage that way. Same is true for all the Dewalt chainsaws. It also helps to only fill the oil about 60%. I sell Dewalt tools as part of my big box store job. Don't overlook the 8" Dewalt pruning chain saw and the 20 Pruning clipper as a way to save your longer saws. There is no reason to limb up a fallen tree with a 16" or 20" saw when the 12" or the 20 hand pruner will do the job. You will save so much battery life by using the 20V hand pruner when possible.
I have the 20v dewalt small one handed reciprocating saw. I can fall 8 inch trees with only 6 inch blade pretty effortlessly in seconds. There is even a 2 inch larger blade I haven't even got to yet, as well smaller. Tool is Small in size and light, yet incredibly powerful and smooth. Optional blades to even cut cast iron Rebar or concrete. I think you sold me on this 12inch over the 16 so I hope I returned the favour
I just purchased a 20 in DeWalt on Amazon today. We are clearing out four acres of mesquite and I have been using my DeWalt 20 V reciprocating saw with the pruner blades and I've been wearing the s*** out of my DeWalt cordless reciprocating saw. Time to step up to the next level. I just do not want to use my gas powered chainsaws. Our shoulders are not what they used to be when I was younger. The gas powered chainsaws will be used as backup for bigger trees.
With the little girl you did a great job .... I'm seriously thinking about it. I was also evaluating some competition with power at 40 v or higher but, I see that then all related industries including batteries have a much higher cost. Congratulations for the review.
Excellent video, great amount of information. I'm thinking about upgrading from a Dewalt 20v Recipr Saw with a 12" pruning blade. This chainsaw seams to cut way quicker. 😂
I got a12" chains and was not able to get the 9Ah MAX 20 20 volt Batteries as everyone was sold out so I got the 12Ah 60v/20v Flexvolt batteries that will work in both the 16" 60V Chainsaw and the 12" 20V Chainsaw. I am also using Canola Oil to lubricate the Blade. The Chainsaw works very well and seems to have quite a bit of power. The only downside is that it is a pain to clean up.
@@playtime5234 I read somewhere to not use canola oil when it is extremely Cold out. The cold keeps the oil from flowing smoothly. I got some 30W Chainsaw oil I got at Walmart also. What do you suggest?
Just learnt how to field strip and reassemble mine. Manual and online articles say that cooking oil can be used and better for environment. Left sitting idle for a long time. And when went to use found no lubrication. When opened case discovered oil lines full of a viscous black sticky mess. Oil pump seized at bottom of travel. Maybe vegetable oil reacted with the metal anti kink coils in oil line. Or just turned fully rancid. All cleaned up and pumping oil again. And will stick with petroleum oils from now on.
I also gave the dewalt pole saw. A bit underpowered, but extremely useful. And, I already had a quiver of dewalt cordless tools. You can never have enough batteries. So, I’ll get the 12” saw
THIS SAW WAS COOL FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS...dead now motor is burnt out, havent even finished paying for it, warranty not valid in Canada so that's awesome. it chugs and leaks bar oil like a mean drunk . guys at work gave me a hard time for using Ryobi tools..but my ryobi sawzall (3 years old) with a 12" blade has outlasted and out worked the Dewalt chainsaw , yes it cuts slower but it still works, Dewalt has really let me down. i'm sticking with Ryobi.
My 12" 20V quit working after about 3 years, motor burned out I guess. I got it because I have 5 other 20V Dewalt tools, they are all still working well after lots of use and abuse. Was hoping for the same reliability. Might try the Ego next, the 16" 56V is about the same price as the little Dewalt.
I have whole sortiment on Dewalt cordless tools. Pretty much all I use. I also do I lot a wood cutting , have 2 professional Stihl chainsaws. Was wondering about this one as a little back up to carry in truck or excavator. Sure looks promising.
I have the Ryobi 12". Love the light weight, compactness and easy start/stop. Use it for limbing and then go to my echo 28" for the bigger stuff. I have a recip with a long pruning blade, but it's slower and rougher on the wrists.
@@pelon21313 here is the video I watched to put the O ring on. Mine measures 1 1/8 inches. I can’t get it off because it fits too tight. I would suggest taking the plug to a local hardware store. I took an O ring from an old water filter that goes in my Gaggia coffee maker. ua-cam.com/video/o_BuujoLht4/v-deo.html
I would think a reciprocating saw would make a terrible pruning saw. They generally don't have the stroke length necessary to clear chips from the kerf very effectively.
Hackzall would be too small for your needs. I've used it at home to cut some branches up etc. It is alittle slow cutting with a Diablo pruning blade. It gets it done but not fast at all
Definately not, the Sawal blade just doesn't work the same. You're better with a big pruning saw. Funny thing I started with the small saw and got bigger and bigger. Now you tell me to go back to the small saw. So yes, maybe I will. It's nice to be able to one hand overhead. Tool tip. The oscillating tool is the best root cutter you'll ever find. It doesn't care about the dirt.
oscillating tool for roots with what type of blade?? I'm asking cause i've always used sawzall (reciprocating saws) for roots cause you can get blades for fairly cheap, long ones too, and the dirt doesn't ruin the blades quickly. Are there long oscillating tool blades that i'm not aware of? I do trail work and build fences in the pnw and we have large douglas fir roots here.
Reciprocating saws ain't got nothing on this saw. You can also upgrade this to a 14 or 16 inch oregon bar and chain kit without increasing weight or bulk much.
Hi man! It was pleasant to watch your review about this saw. Now i think about this model and your video was useful for me. Really, I'm from Ukraine, maybe you know where is it )) Good luck.
So, you get to take public property home for private use? I do believe that is against the law inside the USA? If it was from a federal grant you admitted to a crime? How many others get to do it? Can I go borrow something off your fire truck as a taxpayer who actually paid for it?
Love my little Dewalt. Almost never fire up my gas saws.
Great review!
Especially coming from a firefighter👍🏻
Cheers from Denmark🇩🇰
5/8" O-ring on the inside of the cap will resolve that oil leak. Great review of the Dewalt 12" chainsaw..Thank you
Iv heard that. I haven't had an issue yet
Mate, just don't fill oil all way to top. Fill to bottom of the black insert, she'll be right.
Mine leaks oil, but not from the fill cap.

I've used canola oil for lube without issue....maybe since that oil is derived from a seed, less chance of it spoiling and gunning up
I have the Black+Decker 10" 20V chainsaw and it does everything I need 99% of the time.
Dewalt is a registered trademark of Black and Decker
Thanks for this. I’m debating this one versus a Stihl arborer’s chainsaw for carrying in a UTV for clearing deadfall out of trails.

Thanks for the video brother

Should I get this or a Stihl 170 as a chainsaw beginner, for trimming bigger branches of trees?
You can add a rubber O ring to your oil filler plug to slow down some of the oil leaks.
what size of o ring did you use? Can you put a link to ring if possible? Thank you

Dewalt definitely makes a small sawzall now
What about the oil leak? This model is known for its oil leak problem. Is there a workaround for it?
i havent had much of a problem. no more than any saw running bar oil in it
Thanks for the review!
What mm file size does it use? 4.0 mm?
I love mine, Im like you I already have dewalt stuff so why not just add to the 20v lineup
I have the same chainsaw and find when it cuts it leaves a splintering on the cut and it has done it out the box with a new chain. Is this normal?
Muito bom... ótimo vídeo... parabéns... acabei de comprar uma!!!
HD has good discount on these for BF, gogogo. Can't get a better utility saw.
you can put a bigger bar on this. you try it before i look in your videos for it.
90% good enough for this guy is 99.5% good enough for most other people lol...
