    L.A. Noire FUCKED ME UP the first time I played it. There was one case I spent literally two hours deciding who I thought was guilty. I literally got up, had a drink, sat and stared at the decision screen, had a borderline breakdown over it.
    I got it wrong. I felt like shit for a week.
    One of my best game experiences ever.

    I love that in the homicide desk you are clearly making the wrong choices by charging the suspects you have, because it makes you do it anyway. Sometimes the police do just get it wrong and it was fantastic to see that portrayed

    You have an absolutely captivating talent for critical analysis. I have never played L.A. Noire and I don't plan to anytime soon and yet I watched this entire vid and enjoyed it immensely. I know you mentioned that you are retired from content creation at the moment but dear god man please don't walk away from it for good. Admittedly the modern gaming landscape is usually bereft of anything worth mentioning but I'd wager your expertise and singular ability for exposition could be applied to anything. Books, movies, TV series, hell I am convinced you could do a deep dive on fabric softener and make it uniquely interesting. I know you can't just create content if you aren't inspired or desire to but I truly hope to see your take on something again whatever it may be. Thank you sir.

    Honestly I like the fact that you can't see how many bullets you have left in your firearms because it makes the shootouts more realistic like you actually have to count how many bullets you got left in your .45 caliber

    You seem to forget one thing - Phelps’ story need to be a noir story.
    When I first played the game I was one of those who set it aside after a few hours of gameplay - the reason was it didn’t FEEL noir.
    If all the cases before the demotion were to be noir they should have told from one of the suspected’s point of view.
    But with Phelps’ demise - not to mention death - it CERTAINLY became noir.
    So noir I almost regret that I did not play the game in black and white.
    Generally it is destructive for a player to be informed of the ending - but it was watching another L.A. Noire UA-cam video I learned that later in the game there CERTAINLY was a noir premise for Phelps

    I kind of disagree with you on the Serial killer setup. I feel by having you feel that you are missing something when solving these murders, it does two things. 1). It serves the greater plot by giving you more of a wiff of the LAPDs corruption that Vice starts to make explicit. And 2) Brings some more reality of how this rush to convict someone to get "justice"/ get good press did and still does lead to alot of innocent people getting convicted of things they didn't do!

    This game has sufficient marketing and there were midnight launches at GameStops. This game sold well. Better than most and from what I remember it was a troubled development that closed the dev and not that it didn’t sell. I’m fact I clearly remember the dev being shuttered as the game was being released, before many sales came in. My GameStop was packed with copies and remember buying the game and the wall was covered and other customers were buying the game while I was in there. This anecdote is most likely of another game. The marketing was massive and people knew what this game was but did think it was more like GtA with detectives.
    Edit. I googled the games reception and found many articles that said the game sold well within the first couple years and that preorders were high. Also you compared LA Noire other Rockstar developed games. But it wasn’t…. It was published. And for a game published by Rockstar but with a different dev. It’s the best selling game they’ve published. Rockstar ever thought it would sell gta numbers. Even with the budget of $50 mil it sold 5 mil copies. If the game makes $25 for each copy sold the. That’s 150 million dollars. Triple the budget which is incredible for any game

    Great video man-The only minor problem I had was you said the game sold bad. It was actually the UK's fastest selling game at the time,the main issue was the controversy over the shitty treatment of employees and the relationship with their publisher rockstar which lead them to drop them. It's a damn shame too cause Bondi clearly had real talent but those at the top didnt know how to handle this sorta big, ambitious project

    • @EldritchAugur
      @EldritchAugur  5 років тому

      I did mention later on in the video that it wasn't poor sales on it's own but poor sales relative to the game's massive budget and unrealistic expectations of the publisher that were likely part of the studio's downfall.
      Regardless this is all outsider speculation so I can't point to anything with 100% certainty but it really does suck to see great innovative studios being punished while mediocrity and the status quo are rewarded.
      Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks.

      @@EldritchAugur yeah just saw that now, what I get for commenting before the last ten minutes. I watched this and the mafia video and your damn good at what you do man. Pretty much anything I could say about La Noire you summed up here tho I kinda liked the ending if only cause it didnt "Cop" out and have the player magically solve the crimes like you would expect a big budget detective game to do

    • @HalfgildWynac
      @HalfgildWynac 4 роки тому

      @@EldritchAugur It was more like terrific sales relative to the game's budget. E.g., the first Assassin's Creed was somewhat more expensive and sold about 8 million (its budget is estimated to have been about $120M, I think-which is, by the way, more than the budget of all The Witcher games combined).
      The publisher's expectations for L.A. Noire might have been A BIT unrealistic but not to an extent they would seriously expect a new, uknown game to outperform their flagship franchise. Sure, would have been super nice if it did.

    I loved your critique and thought the video was great, but I do disagree on one thing. For as unsatisfying the ending is, I have to say that it makes sense for Arson since it's heavily influenced by "Chinatown." I know that you stated that the game is more influenced by "L.A. Confidential," but I have to strongly disagree in the case of the Last Desk since the thematic focus and the story beats are SO "Chinatown." It's a bitter ending that's difficult to stomach, but within the context of Noir as a whole, and especially in the context of how much "Chinatown" shaped the plot of the final desk, I think it works well even if it is a little frustrating. That's the think about Noir though, seldom are the endings happy.
    Forget it Eldritch, it's Chinatown.

    Even that I have Asperger, I am incapable of reading facial expressions, because that disability, I love this game, even that lost it twice, I downloaded again, even had become a relic at this point, a old gem, I am a fan of noire, so is no surprise that I love this game, also I love the fact that it not hold your hands meanwhile travelling in the world map, you actually need to learn the map to reach to your destination, something that I began to do with some of my open world map, travelling without a guide.

    I was just playing through the part about the message behind the photograph. I think it's bad writing but not because it expects a leap of logic. The whole point of that line of questioning is to reveal relationship issues between the Blacks, and you're supposed to assume that there is an issue because they have separate bedrooms. But it's bad writing because it's an awkward entry point into that line of questioning. One would assume a better opening inquiry would involve the separate bedrooms, not a photograph. You ask if there's trouble in the marriage, she says no, then you spring the photo in her face and say "yes and you know it".

    Actually the killer of the Black Dahlia is no unknown anymore, his name was George Hodel, plastic surgeon of the stars, and lover of arts that would be consider controversial at the time (with a lot of nudity), the Dahlia copy one of favourites photos, the bull, that is basically a naked woman, with her arm rise up, with her face hide and her breast functioning as the eyes of the bull.

    I disagree that Cole isn't changed at the end of the game. He learns some humility and he realises that taking down the corrupt officials and making wrongs right is more important than his career. And he apologises to Jack Kelso and also saves him in the end.

      I grew up in Florida which is very hard to define an accent. I guess you could say "Southeastern U.S." accent but I think Florida is probably the hardest state in the country to define a local accent from. We have southern accents to the north of us ironically, and Cuban flavored accents to the South.
