Thank you! That means a ton because that's exactly why I wanted to make this. I was so frustrated after playing this game and looking back on the reviews. I just could not believe the dissonance between my own opinion and seemingly everybody else's. I really appreciate the kind words. I'm currently in the middle of making a Dishonored 1&2 Critique if you are interested in more content.
Kolbe Howard you earned it. I love listening to in depth reviews after finishing a game. This content is as good if not better than any Triple A reviewer out there. You deserve a lot more subs.
@@EldritchAugur I only played this last year and I hadn't even seen or heard reviews or played the previous two games in the series. So I went in truly and purely unbiased. And I loved LOVED this game. It is so so so good.
I genuinely hate how much people dislike the game. It's not that I don't understand because I do. It is very repetitive and buggy. But dammit, the story is so fantastic. I found myself loving Lincoln Clay, John Donovan, and Burke. And Vito, of course. But I was so hooked into the story that the gameplay didn't bother me. The voice acting was phenomenal. The choice of music was phenomenal. It really was a fantastic game. It just had too many bugs and it was too repetitive. It hurts, man.
I’ve always seen Mafia 3 as less of a Mafia game, but more of a Punisher game that we never got set in Louisiana, and I am a thousand percent ok with that. Also helps to boost this idea when you are able to add Punisher’s clothes in through mods.
Yikes this is a cool idea, I'm boutta start tomorrow and just like how Cyberpunk 2077 should be played as Far Cry 2077, to think of Mafia 3 as a Punisher game will make the boring bits a bit better
@@KordonGMV Ik im late but if you're playing on pc there's a community patch mod that gets rid of the boring grind and makes the game how it should've been. It takes a decent pc to run but it's by far the best way to play mafia 3, the mod makes it as fun as 2 imo
So good news for Hangar 13 luckily! The Mafia 1 remake was very well received. I've even seen they've been given awards for having great work environments. Things are looking good for them, hopefully they get to make a new game of their own!
Hey so If you're wondering where the time code is to skip the Sal Marcano scene, well apparently UA-cam doesn't do annotations anymore so I'm gonna just put the timecode here. 50:38. Sorry, next time I'll just put it on screen in editing.
This game did something special for me. I play games regularly but I rarely focus on them more then youtube. I played the opening and usally when i would put google up and start watching youtube I didn't. I started loving all the details and keep changing up my playstyle. For one district i would be stealthy then the next i would go full rainbow. I know this is weird but usually when i hear racist stuff in games i brush it of but in Mafia 3 I started loving the people who didn't make fun of Lincon's skin colour. Also driving down a street with the street lights lighting up the street and my car. This game looks amazing in my opinion. The game did get repetitive with the districts but sort of like The last of us I played to get the cut scenes. The story is the reward.
Man this is the last game i beat with my brother before he passed away. It has a special place because of that but the game could have been so much better we all can agree
Maybe I’m just fanboying here, but I’ve seriously played though Mafia 3 (5 times, working on my 6th playthrough) more times than GTA V, (2 times, somewhere halfway through the 3rd playthrough. Now, I’ve played Red Dead Redemption about 7 times, but still. The story and tone had a way of sucking me in, and not letting me go. I had one friend who complained that there wasn’t a bunch of crazy “strangers and freaks” missions like in GTA or RDR. I asked him, “Your family was just murdered. Are you really going to run around doing random things for people in our town, or are you going to try to get some revenge?” Honestly, the story was so well written that, even after playing it start to finish 5 times, I still want to see Lincoln through his journey from start to finish. Also, for what it’s worth, I had it (on Xbox one) at launch. I experienced a few minor glitches, but nothing totally different than I’d expect to find in a GTA game. I should make a note, I did experience one crash, but that may have been my fault. (Possibly bumped the power button with my cord while standing up/moving and just not realized it.) I’m sad that this franchise probably won’t get another installment. Then again, I was also hoping to get a spin-off that tracked Donovan on his own mission to hunt down the.. well, I won’t spoil it. You know what I’m talking about, though.
I could barely finish GTA V the first time and that's coming from someone who enjoyed nearly every other R* game. When I played Mafia 3 it became one of my favourite games ever to the point where I'm on my 5th playthrough now. Only game I like more is the first Red Dead Redemption.
I also love Red Dead Redemption and Mafia 3, in my opinion they both have the same thing in common, they don't try to make the combat more realistic (which i didn't like in RDR2) or complicated than it should be and rather take an ''arcadey'' route. This way when you learn the few implemented mechanics (which in both cases are just plain brutal fun), it all just clicks and you feel like a badass that can dispatch enemies at a drop of a hat. It also helps that both characters have a rich backstory and no doubt just plainly look cool without being cliche.
I bought this game recently during the pandemic sale, and was expecting a mediocre game to waste time with. It is not a great game, especially compared to something like red dead 2. But among my constant cynicism if the game i always found myself wanting to keep playing it. As times passed after i beat it, the wisely reviled reputation is so uncalled for. I hate repetitive open world games like ubisofts library where you do constant repetitive copy paste missions. Ive come to realize the type of open world game mafia 3 is always compared to, are actually much worse than mafia 3. I thought i was gonna go crazy being the devils advocate for this game, im glad it has its fans.
Hey man. Im playing mafia 3 right now and i cant believe how bad reviews were for this game. I think mafia is a very solid game, with good visuals, beautiful soundtrack, almost perfect driving and engaging gunplay. And setting... man, what could be better than vietnam veteran coming back and starts a war against mob, this is just a dope scenario, for me personally. Most people complaint about repetitive gameplay, but, as you mention in video, each business you need to takeover has the similar submissions but completly different main missions, with different locations and other stuff to do. It isnt perfect, but im enjoying it, love playing it. Thanks for the video, cant watch it full though, cause im half through the game now)) but when ill be done with mafia i will definitely watch the full video. Well.. keep up the good work and good luck.
Andrii Katashynskyi Thank you. I obviously loved the game too so I felt like this video had to be made. You're safe until around the 36 minute mark (Minor spoilers for Lieutenant and Capo missions before that) if you want to avoid spoilers. I appreciate the comment and the view.
People like to complain when games do something different than the ones previously in the series. But then will also complain when the game is too similar to the previous ones in the series.
Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. Planning on doing one more (smaller video this time,) before I go on vacation in May and then a big Dark Souls video when the remaster comes out.
Finally a review that makes sense some people just dont get this game i bought it on the day it released and yea it wasn't perfect and it crashed but goddamn did i have a good time its a hidden gem.
Don’t forget to this is the first time in the franchise where your slowly taking down the mafia not rising ur way higher into the ranks slowly becoming rich and corrupt
I'm definitely late for the party. But I actually watched this video around the time it was released and its crazy how this Critique of a game I haven't even played has carved into my brain to a point I had to come and rewatch it 2019. Can't praise you enough. Please keep doing these types of Critiques/reviews since you are clearly on a class of your own when it comes making people being interested in a very long videos about games they might not even like in the first place 😅
A masterpiece! A mature game for people who can appreciate and enjoy a masterpiece and not just run and shoot like a poisoned mouse. Take your time ,enjoy the vibe, the city, dialogues, gameplay! Yes gameplay...the soundtrack!!!! Just a total package of an amazing underrated game with an amazing storytelling and voice acting! I wish the developers would know how much some of us truly love and appreciate this game and their amazing work they have done. Send your review to them to support
The people who made the most noise about how “repetitive” the game was are the same people who play COD every day. The same guns on the same maps doing the same thing every day. So if you enjoy the task you’re repeating, it’s a non-issue.
Tbh it’s different. Multiplayer games are repetitive in nature. But the outcomes are different all the time. Your choices actually matter in you winning or not. Running the same missions over and over just for it to end the same way is boring
@@rogueshay853 That critique could apply to hundreds of single player games though, not specifically Mafia III. GTA V’s story is way more linear and repetitive but no one complained. At least each playtheough is different in Mafia III as you can decide who to hand off the rackets/districts to and in what order. You even get entirely different cutscenes depending on the order of capos you take down. I just feel Mafia III gets an undeserved stink on it especially since that Angry Joe douchebag made that ridiculous video bashing it when it came out which influenced a ton of people who now write it off based on someone else’s opinion. Now the game is overlooked by those people who may actually enjoy it because they just go, “Doesn’t that game suck? I heard it sucked.”
@Ward413 but the non linearity is the problem both mafia 1 and 2 were very linear and they benefited from this there levels are better designed and the shootouts more interesting same with gta5. 3 on the other hand is way to long and consists of doing the same thing over and over again in order to control the districts if the game was more linear like the first 2 it'd be better.
@@butters9354 They certainly could have cut down on the racket damage mechanic, especially for new players who may not understand that some activities are a waste of time and don’t cause enough damage to the racket to justify doing. The devs tried to make it intuitive by making the size of the mission icon on the map correspond to how much damage that activity does to a racket but most players missed that. You can cause enough damage to a racket in ten minutes if you know which missions to do. You just have to ignore those tiny repetitive activities. I still think the repetitive critique is overstated when played correctly. Plus a linear story would have limited replay-ability. I like Mafia II’s story more and yet I’ve played Mafia III the most because each playthrough is different. So I don’t think the lack of linearity was an issue on its own as an open world did seem like the logic next step for the franchise but perhaps it could have been handled better. I still think the racket damage mechanic is novel and enjoyable; I just think a lot of players went on auto pilot and drove up to any icon they saw on their mini-map not realizing they may be wasting their time with small repetitive tasks you can completely ignore and instead focus on the larger stuff that causes significant damage. In fact, if you hover over an activity on the main map it even gives you a little breakdown of info like how much damage you’ll cause, the risk vs reward, etc. So the devs put the info there as I bet the repetition came up in QA/play testing but it seems it wasn’t enough.
It’s ok for linear games to be repetitive that’s expected. But open world games such as mafia shouldn’t be. That’s what made it terrible. Just like assassin’s creed 1. Open world but repetitive missions.
I recently played the entire trilogy with the newer Definitive Edition and streamed it to my girlfriend on Discord. We really enjoyed Mafia 2 DE and I had heard really bad reviews about Mafia 3 and almost skipped it. Ended up playing it because my girlfriend insisted to and we enjoyed it so much! Both of us were just confused by the end as to why a game so fresh and so fun like this got such bad reviews. Thanks for making this long essay! A shorter one wouldn't have given it the justification it needed. Incredible work
Mafia 3 is very underrated I personally really love the game. The story is amazing, the characters are amazing, voice acting is amazing, the gunplay and gameplay is amazing, the soundtrack is amazing, and the writing is amazing, what more can be said..
For me it needed a better city. The game did good with the dispatcher and the districts, but other then that the world felt empty. Other then the optional underboss missions there wasn't that much to do between the rackets.
I'm replaying Mafia 3 and it's sooo good! I love it as much as I loved it back then when it was released. Something about this game stays with me even after playing. I'm thinking about this game throughout the day. The setting, the time period, the protagonist,... It's just perfect in my opinion. And I'm so glad that there are people who feel the same way. I couldn't agree more with everything you said in this brilliant review. The only thing that bothers me is the screen tearing during cutscenes (which isn't present in your version). Other than that it's a masterpiece.
Mafia 3 is a hidden gem for real. Most of the criticism was indeed simplistic and exaggerated and didn’t effect the overall structure of the game, especially the story. It’s truly a misunderstood and hidden gem 💎
Thank you for this. New sub. Edit: Very thought out review. Breaking down the story, it's characters, explaining the time and its significance. The game play mechanics and game play loop and so much more and in so much detail. I'm glad I found this channel. I'm playing Mafia 3 (again) and wanted to see if someone out there would see that there was so much potential in this game, obviously the launch wasn't that great. But after the patches and added content, the pros definitely outweigh the cons for this game, with blemishes of greatness that put it above most of its competitors and make it an underdog/ hidden gem. This video does this game justice and it's clear a lot of hard work was put into it. Hope to see more from this channel. Well done 👍🏼👍🏼
Despite the reviews and fallout, I genuinely enjoyed and got immersed into the Mafia 3 world. The story was dark and gritty. It just left a mark on me. Kudos to Hanger 13 for that, I'm not easy to please.
I remembered really enjoying this game on release but the fact everybody else seemed not to has always made me question my tastes. "Maybe I just enjoy trashy open world games.". I do, but this is where I first realized it. I went to replay this game recently on a whim, and I've come to realize this game IS more solid than people gave it credit for, and they eventually fixed a few problem areas with lacking content, like customization. It might be repetitive but every open world game is just as if not more so. At least this game's repetition is with the main gameplay, it's outstanding combat, and backed up with an even better story.
While watching this video i noticed a lot of similarites between lincoln clay and frank castle. Vietnam vet, family killed, shot in the head, revenge tale. Idk. Makes me want a punisher skull outfit mod. Gonna go see if i can fine one lol.
6:40 one thing I disagree with is that NOBODY in the mafia series are good people. They'll step on anyone who gets in their way, they'll shake down store owners for a couple of bucks, and they will kill who they see fit. They're selfish individuals, but they're likeable. Do NOT confuse likable with good
This video is pretty good, I've been looking for a long video about mafia 3 because the game deserves a video like this. As much as the game has its issues, I still put it in my top 5 video games of ALL time.
no matter how much time passes, i always end up coming back to this video. it's well put together! mafia iii was one of the first games i played when i finally got my own console. it's weirdly near and dear to me. i'm glad the narrative around it has changed in recent years.
Mafia 3 is the best in the Mafia series, and that will never change in my mind. It's awesome, and I love playing it. The atmosphere and story gets me really invested in the game and the gameplay is pretty damn solid.
Mafia 3 is a masterpiece. Graphic, Story, gameplay, realistic handling of the vehicles, the realistic history, everything in it, the character himself Lincoln clay connected to.
Gameplay wise the game felt lacking to me, Story wise, its a game i constantly come back to. Overall i love the game, and i felt people play the game with the expectations of a All-time amazing game with zero flaws.
This by far has to be the most shocking voice actor gig for Nolan North known for being the voice of Nathan Drake in the uncharted series, but he plays a mean nasty white supremacist personality Remy Duvall in Mafia 3 where he uses the N-word. Course he’s not like that in real life and this was just a job.
As an Anne Rice fan I never have been in New Orleans, but running around in New Bordeaux is the closest thing, I actually love the attention to detail that they did to the city, and now much more than Mafia II Empire Bay, most of the city is open to you, you can break in business if you need adrenaline patch or bullet proof vest or simply money.
I kind of disagree with you with the Stone’s Unturned DLC. While I agree that it was weird in the context of the main game, I understand the build up to Donovan’s revelation. He is really regretful at not stopping Aldridge, knowing that he could doom the world as a result (as Aldridge could get away with the nuke).
I liked the DLC. Nothing to really complain about. I really do not understand the problem the video talks about. How Donovan act on his own instead of getting the military or whatever to stop the nuke? I mean it is a dam game. And really Donovan seems like he got some problem with his bosses and politics in general or something. It makes sense that the person setting this hole murder rampage to take over the city might have gotten fed up on how corrupt and pointless it is to trust anyone but yourself to do stuff right. I mean common he seem to be able to stop the nuke getting into the wrong hands since he can make a transport helicopter come and pick it up ones captured. He got connections and such. It is quite fun and interesting too. The woodo stuff is worse I think.
I played this when it first released. I loved the opening! The first 10 hours felt like I'd seen a lost season of a Sopranos spin-off. Unfortunately, for the next 10 hours the gameplay really let me down. As you said the game has a lot of good aspects but I do think a bit more character to the world itself was needed. Call me nitpicky, but it's immersion breaking when you walk into an intersection and are confronted by about 15 clones of an NPC
"makes me sad that there hasn't been a true open world detective game where the player can follow their own leads and solve the crime scenes on their own" L.A. Noire:🗿
I don't agree with some of the comments about the quality of the game but nonetheless, I did find A LOT of enjoyment out of this game. Honestly didn't understand why it received so much backlash
I feel like hanger 13 gets a bad rap. I mean, it was there first game and they merged with 2k Czech so there was a lot of conflicting ideas of what mafia 3 was going to be. I feel like now they have had time to settle down they will make better games. Plus 1 game is a small sample size to be able to say the company is bad.
I have a feeling that eventually this review will get the praise and views it deserves, Mafia 3 is one of best games I've ever played as far as a thrilling cinematic experience and top tier gameplay the only other I compare it to is TLOU pt.1. I remember when I first watched this review it was l finally someone who took the time to actually think critically about this game and not just agree with the rabid horde called the " gaming community ". Wherever you are I hope your doin well man, Godspeed.
Thank you for this video. Mafia 3 over the years became one of my favorite game ever, the setting, music, the atmosphere is so unique, sometimes i find myself listening to Father James documentary videos in my car just to get me in the mood through the day. He himself became one of my favorites video game characters ever, the way Gordon Greene played him was perfect. I played the game in all 3 platforms, and I’M building a monster soon just to replay it in the best way possible.
I liked mafia 3 but the only thing that took me out of it was the clothing,it woulda been better if you could buy different articles of clothing and mix and match current outfits, the story was one of the best vengeance focused stories i interacted with in a long time, the world was open from the start, I'd give it a 3.5 out of five
Mafia 3 always kind of felt like my Last of Us, honestly. A great story and cast supporting fairly mediocre gameplay. For me, personally, the story is good enough to get me through the sometimes repetitive missions to get to the next story segment or character interaction, especially whenever Donovan shows up.
I 100%ed mafia 3. Loved the game. Mafia 2 is my favorite game of all time so it was only natural. Maybe I’m a massive fan boy of the series but I loved almost every second of mafia 3
Im glad i stumbled on this video. Mafia 3 isnt as bad as everyone says it is. I enjoyed the gameplay especially since i took down every racket using stealth which makes you plan out your approach. And the set piece of the world is great, you really feel like you are in the late 1960s during the peak of the civil rights movement. I kinda wish inatead of going after the mafia, Lincoln was growing the black mob with Sammy and Ellis.
Just finished Mafia 3 today and it’s one of my favorite games that I’ve played in the past few years. Had to come back to this video and thank you for putting me on. I remember watching this when your channel was so little, before your Dark Souls boss review video blew up. Can’t believe I’ve been sleeping on this game for so long. I know you don’t do the UA-cam thing anymore, but I hope you’ve been doing OK these days.
Thank you for the effort you put into making this video. I am a huge fan of the series, since the first old game, which I finished numerous times. I'm playing mafia 3 now, in 2021, for the first time and I absolutely love it. I even don't mind the repetition of those side missions because I like how the simple stealth mechanic works and I prefer that option, instead of going guns blazing. Plus the main missions are great, the story is great and also the way they tell it. I had only a few bugs and about 2 glitches, which weren't game breaking so I moved on. All in all, I am very happy with the game and I hope another one to come.
Playing this recently shines a light on how underrated this game is, for the better aspects of it. When playing it, I did have times when the act of clearing districts felt annoying, but the story beats I did get when clearing them made it worth it to me. The DLCs for the game that came out I feel dont have this issue, but I can see why it could be frustrating to some.. If a mafia 4 ever comes out I hope they find a better way to balance all of the game. I think the recent defintive edition shows that if hangar 13 does make a mafia 4 they might be a lot more understanding of it and what made the older games good as well, and more full to play.
My girlfriend watched me play mafia 3 for the first time the other night. she loves wings. My executions are brutal in games but when she saw what Lincoln does with his knife her mouth hung open as she watched him carve up a mobsters face.
I love how as the game goes on before you kill him (Remy) you can see some of his mask slipping on the radio. Especially with the police chief and Hollis Dupree
The distinctive glitches I found in Mafia 3 that stuck out the most was the fact the NPC's are suppose to dodge me in a speeding vehicle, but why are they leaving in front of the oncoming vehicles I'm driving if they are trying to avoid getting run over? Are they lemmings? The mixed reviews are properly certifiable, while the people in defense of Mafia 3 from the voice actors and some of the staff making a coddling argument saying that the reviewers including the angry gamer dude lambasted the game while other Mafia purists felt indifferent about an African-American protagonist when they are more comfortable with Italian characters in a mob game about the Italian mob. But Mafia 3 can be compared to a fraternity pledge punchbowl with a lot of boozed poured into it, but the end result is lacking substance and much to be desired. One of the unlockable skins in the Mafia 3 DLC sign of the times is Lincoln Clay gets to wear a motorcycle club biker cut, but there are no motorcycles in Mafia 3 which is disappointing, but he can wear an MC biker cut. It's pretty redundant in my opinion. And there's another glitch. When doing the errands for the underbosses in Mafia 3, for example, when I do an errand involving stealing trucks from the Dixie Mafia containing contraband for Alma, it turns out there is no truck to pick up, and I drove out in the bayou for nothing. And I'm with you on this for those who said the game is repetitive, so is every racing game, and other genres of there is repetition. Most of those reviewers have agendas much like mainstream Media news outlets do. At the time I am writing this comment, I had already played my second round of Mafia 3, and I intend to go for a third-round once I get an upgraded video card as well as other requirements to play the game as it is intended. I'm playing it on a GeForce GTX 650 which is not meeting the requirements to play Mafia III. And that is sad. Hopefully hangar 13 has wised up because they are working on Mafia 4 which is going to be a prequel to Mafia 2 in the timeline.
It doesn't bother me at all. But with all the time spent building this game, you would think the developers would take the time to put Lincoln's scar on the correct side of his head. He is shot in the left side, yet when he wakes up, the scar is on the right. I do not understand how someone who calls themselves a professional can miss something like this. Then again, the awful mission design and sky box made the cut, so it doesn't come as that big of a surprise.
Phenomenal review man. I watch a lot of these critiques by larger channels and I've gotta say this is really damn solid. I love hearing passionate defenses that go against the more mainstream opinion of games. I really like Mafia 3 for it's willingness to go head-on into some more uncomfortable subjects that other open world games avoid (as you pointed out, the setting in the South, police response times, etc...) This really got me thinking on what an incredible marvel it would be if a big-time studio tried to make a dedicated game to the full extent of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. I'm talking about playing as a black man and being able to visit famous speeches with the enormous crowds for MLK or Malcolm X, detail other black figures from Fred Hampton to the assassination of Robert Kennedy. Hell, go all out in terms of being a historic / educational artifact detailing events like the Letter from a Birmingham Jail or playing as a protestor dealing with the incredible ruthless and barbaric tactics used to suppress riots back then. Hell - maybe I'm thinking too big but also the religious tension between the Nation of Islam and political divisiveness (Lyndon B. Johnson, Vietnam War, to George Wallace getting 10 million Americans to vote for hi by being pro segregation). A lot of this is inspired by Mafia 3. There's such an untapped market here as opposed to doing another game in LA/NY and playing it safe. The "backlash" from the gaming community may be there for detailing such subjects but I'd love to see it one day.
"The barbaric tactics used to suppress riots back then" This is partially true, but considering the 1965 race riots by African Americans, it maybe wasn't always a bad move.
Ayy 0451 reference and yes I totally agree with this. Mafia 3 is a flawed gem. It had a ton of potential and genuine passion behind it. Also the Mafia series ain't completely abadoned. There are talks of a Mafia 4 and a Mafia 2 and 3 remaster,
No variation joe wtf there’s different way of handling them stealth or guns blazing and the locations are different and besides the combat is fun and satisfying
@@ivanpabon2741 What exactly makes it "boring"? Lmao, the gunplay is brutal, fluid and and satisfying af, the video already made out what makes it so great as well, you don't prove nothing by saying "bOrInG aS sIn" Also, the game gives you even more options than just a silenced pistol, so what's your point?
@@danwordgod2017 go up behind most people in most mission and you clear a room in 10 secs with the slow mo shots. Then pull out the Tommy when they want you to go loud. And since if your good enough at stealth like I was. You almost never need to pull out the Tommy. Shut I don't even know if I was that good or the a.i was that bad. All I remember was that once I got the silence pistol AL almost never needed to other gun or grenades or anything like that. Ever. And I got that gun like in the first 3 hours of staring the game. Lol 😂
I respect you way more than anyone who disregarded, criticized or abolished this game. I saw a video which showed the evolution of video but it ignored Vito in mafia 3 completely. I love mafia 3, personally over both mafia 1 and 2 as well as any gta or rdr game.
Playing this in 4K, 60fps on the PS5 is a truly amazing experience. Such an underrated game and I’m glad it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. Such a great crime-drama
Haven’t watched this video in full yet as I’m still watching it but I agree with the points you’ve mentioned so far I enjoyed the Mafia 1 remake but I hope the studio won’t be afraid to take risks like it did with Mafia 3. Loved how it featured other factions like the black mob offering a variety of things. Lincoln Clay was awesome & it had fantastic writing the best in the series. The best stories are the ones that always evolve & grow.. & it just featuring the Italian mob imo is stagnating the franchise. The little things like having a shoot-out at your under bosses safehouse & radio stopping in tunnels was a nice touch. I just had a really good time with the story of this game & with the DLC its a solid 8.5/10 for me
The game flopped mostly because of the repetitive gameplay and the glitches. It was clearly unfinished. Also it just wasn’t made with the same love as mafia 2 or 1. Mafia 2 had incredible attention to detail while mafia 3 has none of that.
I am a sucker for 60s music and the counterculture surrounding the vietnam war. So I particularly enjoyed the setting, and that it was in a kind of different area than you would expect. The game was a bit long at times, but when you have Cream on the radio, that's ok.
Talking about setting, Watch dogs took us to Chicago and WD2 took us to San Francisco, with fantastic results might I add. Also, gtasa had Vegas, a small Vegas yes, but still a Vegas. Besides that, with news of a Mafia 4 swirling about, I am hoping that game is set in Vegas to fully recreate that city and it's surrounding areas. WDlegion is going to London, and GTA 6 going back to Miami to fully recreate the place, which will be cool, I would like to see a game set in Vegas.
Incredible overview of terribly misunderstood game. I can tell a lot of thought and effort went into this content. Well done.
Thank you! That means a ton because that's exactly why I wanted to make this. I was so frustrated after playing this game and looking back on the reviews. I just could not believe the dissonance between my own opinion and seemingly everybody else's.

It takes a decent pc to run but it's by far the best way to play mafia 3, the mod makes it as fun as 2 imo

mafia 3 need no fucking defense it was an awesome game and by far had the best soundtrack of all mafia games
I'm currently playing Mafia 3 I love the story and setting around it

(Possibly bumped the power button with my cord while standing up/moving and just not realized it.)
I’m sad that this franchise probably won’t get another installment. Then again, I was also hoping to get a spin-off that tracked Donovan on his own mission to hunt down the.. well, I won’t spoil it. You know what I’m talking about, though.
Mafia 4 has been confirmed.
@@walicki123 and another common thing. saint denis and new Bordeaux from mafia 3 are the same locations
Same bro , cant get enough of it
I bought this game recently during the pandemic sale, and was expecting a mediocre game to waste time with.
Not going to lie, it is pretty obvious that a lot of effort was put into this one.
Looking forward to more content!
Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. Planning on doing one more (smaller video this time,) before I go on vacation in May and then a big Dark Souls video when the remaster comes out.

Yes gameplay...the soundtrack!!!! Just a total package of an amazing underrated game with an amazing storytelling and voice acting!
I wish the developers would know how much some of us truly love and appreciate this game and their amazing work they have done.

The devs tried to make it intuitive by making the size of the mission icon on the map
correspond to how much damage that activity does to a racket but most players missed that.
Incredible work
Just found and binged a bunch of your stuff some top quality long form video essays!! Subbed!
Just finished Mafia 3 a few days ago, so glad you made this video. Painfully underrated game.
I’m here because I just played Mafia 3 and I was amazed by the amount of content and detail, and honestly I love it . Thanks for this video

Mafia 3 I really believe would have not had so much backlash if it didn’t have the mafia name attached too it
6:40 one thing I disagree with is that NOBODY in the mafia series are good people. They'll step on anyone who gets in their way, they'll shake down store owners for a couple of bucks, and they will kill who they see fit. They're selfish individuals, but they're likeable.
Do NOT confuse likable with good
if they didn't call this game mafia 3 it would of gotten 8's and 9's

Story wise, its a game i constantly come back to.
Overall i love the game, and i felt people play the game with the expectations of a All-time amazing game with zero flaws.
I actually really love this game. I love the grit and extreme violence.
Yup

A very honest & in depth review. Headed for my 2nd play through.
I don't agree with some of the comments about the quality of the game but nonetheless, I did find A LOT of enjoyment out of this game. Honestly didn't understand why it received so much backlash
I think people just wanted a direct continuation for MII and would reject anything that wasn’t the Vito and Joe show y’know?
Genuinely love this game. Best story ever. BRUTAL and impactful af combat. Great setting and vibe. Fuck the people who dismissed this game.
There is a mod out there that honest-to-god removes nearly all grind from the game. Just replayed the game with it, and it was such a blast!
Its a absolute tragedy that this video only has 3.9k views and the video titled The disappointment of Mafia 3 has 250k.... Bullshit.
you just convinced me to get into this series, i had a biased opinion on mafia 3 before this video and now i might be a new fan!!! thank you so much
Mafia 3 always kind of felt like my Last of Us, honestly. A great story and cast supporting fairly mediocre gameplay. For me, personally, the story is good enough to get me through the sometimes repetitive missions to get to the next story segment or character interaction, especially whenever Donovan shows up.
Well spoken
Keep telling yourself the objectives being different doesn't make the game repetitive, it doesn't change the fact that it is repetitive
Even though the game came out six years ago, I am playing it today.
I just finished it for the first time in 2020 after playing through M1 & 2 and this game was really, really underrated!

Love your video well done and very interesting. Just got the game and looking forward to playing it.
Ever heard about L.A. Noire? That’s a true open world detective game
man i wanted to play this game but review and critic analysis made me lose interest to play this game .. i will give a try thanks man
Great review and congrats on 1k
Phenomenal review man. I watch a lot of these critiques by larger channels and I've gotta say this is really damn solid. I love hearing passionate defenses that go against the more mainstream opinion of games. I really like Mafia 3 for it's willingness to go head-on into some more uncomfortable subjects that other open world games avoid (as you pointed out, the setting in the South, police response times, etc...)
This really got me thinking on what an incredible marvel it would be if a big-time studio tried to make a dedicated game to the full extent of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
So Assassins creed?
"The barbaric tactics used to suppress riots back then"
This is partially true, but considering the 1965 race riots by African Americans, it maybe wasn't always a bad move.
I love how they added the difference in dispatch calls. A really nice detail
Ayy 0451 reference and yes I totally agree with this. Mafia 3 is a flawed gem. It had a ton of potential and genuine passion behind it.
Also the Mafia series ain't completely abadoned. There are talks of a Mafia 4 and a Mafia 2 and 3 remaster,
mafia (1) too
They had a second chance. With the remake of mafia 1 and all mafia fans if not most agree that they knocked it out the park
Beat part about this game is no car alarms.
No variation joe wtf there’s different way of handling them stealth or guns blazing and the locations are different and besides the combat is fun and satisfying
No it isn't its boring as sin. And if you can just do most of the missions in stealth with the first silence pistol you get
@@ivanpabon2741 What exactly makes it "boring"? Lmao, the gunplay is brutal, fluid and and satisfying af, the video already made out what makes it so great as well, you don't prove nothing by saying "bOrInG aS sIn"
Also, the game gives you even more options than just a silenced pistol, so what's your point?
@@danwordgod2017 go up behind most people in most mission and you clear a room in 10 secs with the slow mo shots. Then pull out the Tommy when they want you to go loud. And since if your good enough at stealth like I was. You almost never need to pull out the Tommy. Shut I don't even know if I was that good or the a.i was that bad. All I remember was that once I got the silence pistol AL almost never needed to other gun or grenades or anything like that. Ever. And I got that gun like in the first 3 hours of staring the game. Lol 😂
@@ivanpabon2741 Come back when you can tell me why it has "bad gunplay"
@@danwordgod2017 not bad just boring.......everything
I loved all three games and together make a truly amazing trilogy
I'm glad someone has the sense to point out how cancerous those glitch compilations are.
Bought this yesterday for PS5 and so far loving it. The graphics are great and the overall story and Louisiana setting is awesome.
I respect you way more than anyone who disregarded, criticized or abolished this game. I saw a video which showed the evolution of video but it ignored Vito in mafia 3 completely. I love mafia 3, personally over both mafia 1 and 2 as well as any gta or rdr game.
great vid bro..
Playing this in 4K, 60fps on the PS5 is a truly amazing experience. Such an underrated game and I’m glad it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. Such a great crime-drama
Huh? It’s 1440p and 30fps on PS5 bro. Same as PS4 Pro. Sadly, none of the Mafia games received PS5 patches.
@@Ward413you’re right. My TV has “motion enhancement” so that’s why. I’m assuming it upscales to 4K on 4K displays
@@1.800zZzZzZz Mafia III also has one of the smoothest 30fps’s I’ve ever played. Zero input lag, great motion blur. So it hides it well.
another great detail in mafia 3. When someone prepares a molotow and you shot him he drops him and burns... its great ok?
I just had a really good time with the story of this game & with the DLC its a solid 8.5/10 for me
I thought mafia 3 was a superb game, would recommend it to anyone
The game flopped mostly because of the repetitive gameplay and the glitches. It was clearly unfinished. Also it just wasn’t made with the same love as mafia 2 or 1. Mafia 2 had incredible attention to detail while mafia 3 has none of that.
Good for you.
I thought i was the only one. God i love this game
I am a sucker for 60s music and the counterculture surrounding the vietnam war. So I particularly enjoyed the setting, and that it was in a kind of different area than you would expect. The game was a bit long at times, but when you have Cream on the radio, that's ok.
The only thing that sucked were there were no doors songs
@@Chicken_Wing91 The biggest bands from that era are practically impossible to find on any compilation: Doors, Beatles, Stones
@@fp5126 oh i know that. But it would be awesome to stroll through the bayou blasting Soul Kitchen lol
