@@x_slaughotto_x3129 problem is most people on the internet who speak english are NOT american. it's just easy to assume they are because in most conversations you see, the topic won't come up and they seem to have maybe 2% knowledge on american affairs: or just enough to carry a conversation. lots of people speak english as a second or third or even fourth language, and will very easily and fluently communicate with you from nigeria, the philippines, india, brazil, from literally wherever, with you being none the wiser. and then when they slip up, or mention something that might hint they're not american... instead of people thinking, "oh! they must live somewhere else", they go OMG UR SO BAD AND IGNORANT HOW COULD U UR PROBS RACIST" or some weird take that only makes sense from an american lens.
for example, i was once watching this video about black experiences and things, but the video (even though it was talking about black people as a whole) kept calling them "african americans". in the comment section, somebody thought to correct the video and said "not every black person is african american". the replies to said comment, of course using their massive brains, were all about how EVERY black person has ancestry from africa and you shouldn't be ashamed! why do you dislike africa? that's internalised racism! that's a coloniser mindset!! literally 50 and counting angry or snarky replies to this person using harsher words than i did to tell this black person how much they hate themselves....... instead of just guessing _they weren't american,_ which turbned out to be the case in the end. and that's not even the only time i've seen that exact scenario, the same "afro american" argument happen with the same conlusion. completely innocent comments and topics being blown out of proportion because smoothbrains can't fathom english speaking internet users not being from the us. it'd be hilarious if it wasn't so damn sad.

I know Emily made up that argument but I have literally experienced something similar. I once reblogged a post about meal-planning tips and someone accused me of being classist and ableist because some people can't meal plan. Like damn sorry, I still want to know how to make easy soup recipes.
I think it's because social media has a way of becoming extremely personal, and so when people see stuff on their timeline they cannot help but try and relate it to themselves even if they have to bend over backwards to ensure the most bad faith misinterpretation of a stranger's opinion. That combines with the insistence on morality in every aspect of life. It is no longer enough to simply not like a celebrity, you have to manufacture reasons why they are actually bigoted monsters in order to justify your feelings.

like sure their reasoning is ableist, but at least the kid can go through life knowing they were given a second chance to hear the world. not everyone gets a second chance in life. most people live with what they were given, and if that was hearing loss or deafness, then they found ways to live in the world by getting accommodations or things that aid them. its always difficult to live as a disabled person at some point in life, and this kid now doesnt have to experience the ableism and difficulties disabled people experience (unless they becomes disabled or is diagnosed for something else later on). ultimately, what im trying to say is the parents thoughts arent cool but the action is fine.

@@kaihatesyou no saying "i am not willing to have a disabled child" is ableist because you dont want a child because of what they're not able to do. it is focused on disability, not the child. saying "i dont want my child to stay disabled" is different because it focuses your worries for the child. words have impact. also i AM disabled, so ive learned over the years what it looks like when someone cares about you vs. someone who cares about their comfort levels. i believe people can change and these parents likely will realize that it is rude to not want a disabled child because theyre disabled. some parents treat their disabled children like shit because theyre a "burden" to the family. its dangerous thinking. obviously i jumped from a to f in the last part, but words that aren't necessarily hateful (but unknowingly uncool) can fuel hate and normalize it. im done talking about this because its a sensitive topic for me, but i hope you understand that im not pulling shit out of my ass when calling it ableist.

Personally, my disability doesn't damper my life at all. It has advantages and disadvantages. If I'm in a room alone, I don't care that I have it. It's just a part of me. It's how the society I live in reacts to it that makes my life kind of hell
My view of disability is very much: There are inherent disabilities like severe depression and chronic pain that decrease the person's quality of life on their own. Society just makes it worse. Then there are non-inherent disabilities like autism, deafness, blindness, etc. that don't damper the person's quality of life at all on their own. It's the fact that the society around them makes it hard to live like that, because the systems in place aren't built to support them. It's built to support "normal" people
In the same way that a person with legs would be disabled in a legless society, an NT would be disabled in an autistic society. It just matters who the society is built for. Their status as disabilities is still valid because they act as disabilities in the world we have now
I would never trade it for the non-disabled counterpart ever. I would trade the world for one who treats those who are different better, or even one that is built for people like me and still treats the people who are different better. However, I don't think it's wrong to try and avoid a path where your kid exists in a society that is built against them. It is ableist to view the child's deafness as something wrong with them or a burden though (which from what I know, is the entire reason the parents went through with it)

@@gloop7458 I'd argue that's not the case. Society that fully consists of autistic people likely wouldn't be able to function as a society in the first place. It's great that your disability doesn't affect you negatively! But a person with legs could do everything a legless person can do, and NT people adapt quickly and wouldn't have a problem functioning in either society. It's the same reason geniuses aren't "disabled" or "outcasted" - having something additional doesn't make you disabled, but lacking something does, and by definition a disability is something that hinders your functioning (be it physical, cognitive etc.)
I think our society has advanced to a point where we're able to accommodate for everyone regardless of how well they're able to function, and disability can even prove to be highly beneficial in some aspects (like savant autism) but in no way should having a disability itself be glorified. It is what it is. A disability.

The person with legs has improved ability to get around so that isn’t the best comparison. Ableism is the concept of that making us less valuable and less HUMAN… I’m autistic and I’m still a human being who wants connections I just express myself differently so my mostly neurodivergent friend group is the only place where I actually get to be myself and be treated like a person at the same time.

I completely understand people wishing to have such a huge problem in America be recognized by those who hold more power when it comes to the internet, but at the same time I sincerely found it ridiculous how so many people were ready to throw hands at the guy because he wasn't speaking up about it, claiming he didn't care at all when, like what you've said, posting nothing about it doesn't equate him to not giving a shit about the issue. Then he kind of made it as a joke and that offended people, and I guess that was of poor taste, but it doesn't take away the fact how people think they have any authority over somebody to be morally correct pretty much. This is why any attempts of bringing awareness to issues like this end up feeling so performative when people are forced into something just to fit into the mold of how not to be problematic just so they can be on the internet in peace

That's like wanting a straight man to lead a protest about women's rights. Of course I'll reshare things that I feel are resonating, or I will uplift the voices of my black friends, but I shouldn't be expected to come up with some paragraph that won't even come close to being as poignant as something someone from that group would say.

You realize "chronically online" is a very real thing when you go a party and talk to a group of young people (college aged) and it legit sounds like someone is reading a Twitter thread to you. It doesn't even feel like real conversations. Just a contest to see how much they can mention homosexuality, identity racism and oppression in a ten minute convo. The way social media drastically changed people, and the way so many completely dismiss that fact, is yes very concerning...

This comment makes the assumption that those conversations didn't exist before they became commonly talked about online, which isn't true.
These conversations were definitely taking place, the people who were talking about these same exact issues in the 40s, 60s, 80s, etc. just took place in smaller and less visible communities. Now that the internet can connect so many people, more people can see and join these conversations (including younger people who are in those online spaces more).
Now, I won't comment on the quality of those conversations because there are plenty of performative people who have no idea what they're talking about. But, I don't see the concern in simply having conversations about those specific topics.

    • @sparkstudies1675
      @sparkstudies1675 Рік тому +30

@@Arri7979 I feel like it only becomes dangerous at the point where you realise that your personal feelings, thoughts and opinions are not in line with what you're actually saying. Because you're so used to regurgitating text you feel is expected of you, completely disconnected from your own feelings about it and experiences with the topic in real life.
I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I also do think that the changing internet slang and buzzwords have also eroded some of the authenticity of expression aming peers. Group think and peer pressure have always been around, and so have a variety of serious sociopolitical issues, but the youth nowadays likely spend less time and effort actually getting to know/understand more about the topics, and more time jumping onto the bandwagon with the first explanation they see or are exposed to in their curated spaces. And in conversation this comes out as very brief, shallow or uninformed opinions which have often, very obviously not been thought out.
When it takes ten seconds to post and thought you have online and potentially be rewarded, you're not exposed to the kind of critical thinking you need to stand up under scrutiny in the physical world. I think of it like the difference between having autocorrect helping you spell on your phone or word processor, then having to write out something entirely without it and suddenly realising there are several words you don't know how to spell properly.

like there are genuinely a lot of stuff to be mad about in the world, but i think everyone feels guilty about literally everything that they make it everyone else's problem too. look we're all leaving our mark on the world, we all leave some sort of footprint. whether it's physical like our carbon footprint or the memories we leave other people. there are so many issues and we all don't want to deal with them all the time, its hard to always want to be political in a time where everything is political.
i think a big part of it is that we all think that the 'perfect' person with perfect ideals have a set belief system. and we all don't fit those extreme ideals, and we don't really have a reason to NOT be that person so people always go to extremes. truth is, even if we believe that being a certain type of person is what we all should strive for, we don't always follow it. that's because we're all multifaceted people. some times we do things that aren't considered bad but more like mildly not accepted. like holding doors for others, not doing chores often, talking back to people, not tipping, ignoring your surroundings, etc etc. just because you do those things, it's not like that's your entire personality and even if you know you shouldn't do it, it's not like it's something worth berating and harassing people over.
and maybe there's no good reason that you shouldn't be the ideal person, but dude we're just people. i don't think it's bad for us to have a few flaws. it doesn't mean that i approve of those things, because I don't really, but i don't think small imperfections like that are worth getting upset about. they should just be things pointed out and moving on, change is up to you but at least you can decide whether or not to change based on what YOU think you should do. either choice doesn't really matter

Like, I didn't even know "Asian plays piano" was a stereotype at all, and I once got three different people angry at me on Twitter because I said that a celebrity who happened to be Asian probably did well in school when the original poster asked how he got where he was. (He's a music producer.) And it wasn't even an insult or anything, it was literally just an observation, and a positive one too.
And I agree the "not posting = no empathy" point as well. Some of that is seeping into real life lately. There's a Russian musician who didn't post about the war in Ukraine, and for simply not posting about it (and being Russian, I guess), she literally got banned from two different shows she was set to perform at, and then got negative articles written about her until she was basically forced to post her opinion, which was, of course, disapproving of the Ukraine invasion. In fact I probably only use it max 2-3 hours every day. I really like books, baking, fashion, makeup, basketball and watersports. The sad truth about phone addiction is that the one who appears to be addicted to their phone, forgets how beautiful earth is and is stuck in some sort of virtual world where they can't focus on anything else but their screen. This is a reminder everyone, you don't need to spend a whole day on your phone! I came to the realization back in the prehistoric internet era of 2014 that I was spending too much time online and it was coloring the way I viewed the world and people in a very negative way. I didn’t have an eloquent term to describe what my realization was. I distinctly remember saying the sentence “internet people are not real people,” meaning the issues and opinions you find online do not in any way reflect the way real people in your life behave. It was my way of trying to describe the idea of being chronically online without having the term.

i saw one of those reddit videos on tiktok, the question was basically "what would be considered normal 10 years ago but not now" and in the video the reply was "my back", completely normal tiktok, BUT the people in comments were seriously saying being white/male/straight, these people clearly never leave their home.

I like to think that the sketch at 6:03 is the prelude to how the people from the first sketch learned to snowball the harmless tweet, since they are wearing the same clothing and hairstyles. Clearly they were taught well.

I don't know where I saw it and who said it but I saw something about how social media is basically an echo chamber. That's so true.
We've gone from going online to meet new people and possibly be friends with them while respecting their thoughts, beliefs and opinions (if they're not prone to hurting others, I guess) to tearing people down just because they think or behave different from you.
I basically spent my late tweens to teenage years online and, the shift from being chatty with people and not being afraid to put your thoughts out there to people being rude and, trolls and, attacking you because they've read your post a million hundred ways and couldn't end up thinking what your actual intentions were behind said post has been overwhelming.

i have been very immersed into social media probably all of my life, although i'm just 18, it has changed drastically. it has taken a huge toll on my mental health. it gave me false security, that i could speak up about issues and use my voice. but in reality, all of the issues i "can" talk about, has to follow specific rules or else i will get slandered and cancelled. i remember i got cancelled online for something i wasn't even aware was bad, and i was fully open to being educated. but instead people were calling me all sorts of things and slandering me when all i did was talk about something i feel like has been appropriated nowadays.
this might be a little bit of a rant so pls bear with me.
i am transracially adopted. and the word "transracial" today has a new meaning that people like oli london has coined when it is far from its original meaning. transracial is and has not been a stand alone word, and it belongs to adoptees who are adopted across races. i use this word and not 'multicultural' because i don't feel like i belong to more than one culture. i see people on tiktok, people on twitter and literally everywhere thinking that "transracial" means changing races. when it does not.
i tried to make a post about it, and i suppose i worded it wrong. i guess, all i wanted was validation (?) that i have the rights to feel upset when people are using this term wrong, when people group transracial adoptees with transracial /identifying/ people when we are nothing alike. but in reality, all i got was backlash. people calling me stupid, that i was transphobic and that my views were racist. all because i wanted people to know that transracial is an adoptee term, and not a term used for changing races.
i'm desperately trying to find transracial adoption representation, or someone who can relate to me because it feels so immensely lonely sometimes. it wasn't until i got into reddit that i could at least find people who had the same adoption experience as myself. but still to this day, people are appropriating that word. and maybe i am sensitive, maybe my view is completely wrong and i am aware words changes meaning over time. but it just sucks i suppose?

I have a prime example of this (and one of my worst internet experiences). I was on a tiktok once (can't remember what the video was about) and someone in the comments said that they hate when neurodivergent people use their disorder as an excuse or explanation. I replied that it's not an excuse but it is sometimes an explanation for why they may feel/act differently (me being neurodivergent myself btw which i mentioned later in the conversation), like someone with ADHD IS going to act different than someone without it, however, it is not an excuse. We went back and forth like this for ten minutes because she kept saying "you can't excuse your behavior because of your illness" and I literally kept telling her I AGREED but she kept twisting my words so I blocked her. Before I blocked her I guess she saw my instagram which was connected to my tiktok at the time (not anymore after this lol) and commented on every single one of my posts calling me ableist, tearing down my looks, and making bad comments about me. I once again blocked her, and a week later ended up posting something about the argument because I couldn't delete one of the comments calling me ableist and didn't want people to think I was and she was watching me STILL on another account and dmed me terrible things about how ugly and stupid I am and straight up told me that I was faking my mental illness. Like it is so incredibly crazy to stalk and harass someone about a tiktok argument.

I think it's all about attitude. I think when you see a ton of shit that's mildly offensive you kinda lose it on something or someone who doesn't deserve it. It'sike the difference between "I'm so tired of these fucking abelisy assholes not giving a fuck about this comminuty. It's shocking that its allowed to not use captions." vs "hey can you use captions on your vids please? It's super helpful for hard of hearing and deaf folks" justtry to be nice about it. I've never seen anyone when it comes to captions talk as bad as I gave that example they've all been chill and I agree that captions are super helpful
