a side note: im so happy to see how much you've grown after grinding youtube for a while! it took way too long for people to catch on, but your audience has grown so much- very deserved (: ✨✨
I have a lot of problems with the current state of true crime, even outside these strange murderer stans... Imagine going through a horrible tragedy only for people on the internet to be openly speculating "who did it", acting like they understand your life and circumstances from a documentary and perhaps even going so far as to harass you in real life.
I agree wholeheartedly! I LOVE mystery stories and games since I was kid with magic tree house and Nancy Drew, but I could never get into “true crime”. I tried watching one documentary and it just creeped me out like- these are REAL PEOPLE! And they are just casually describing them being brutally murdered like they were reading a story and not a real life tragedy. I was horrified by how many people were casually theorizing about that one vloggers death a few months ago like it was a fun piece of entertainment and not someone who died less than a week ago… I feel for these people’s families…
NOT TO MENTION! That these true crime internet “documentaries” probably don’t ask the victim’s family for permission. Like, imagine financially profiting off of people’s tragedies without asking the family for consent.
That's a problem folks had with the recent Gabby Petito case. Folks were yammering on about it like it was a true crime game or something and it was upsetting lots of folks.
Idk about you, but I'd want people to speculate about my dead family member. The worst thing that could happen in my eyes is having their name forgotten. Being forgotten is a second death and it's not fair to the victims who never got to finish their story.
@@kingexplosionmurderfuckoff9376 I replied to ur comment in another post, dude u keep defending these serial killers in the pretense of supporting and remembering the victims as if that is even done anyways right now, most people know f*** ALL about the victims.... I mean ffs u are here watching a video primarily about these killers not their victims that should show u enough about who is really being remembered, and to make it worse its one about them being glorified sex symbols while the victims are rarely mentioned other than to extend these killers stories, all the attention goes to one person and u are here with chest, pretending like it doesnt its really upsetting. And what are u on about being forgotten, if I got raped, cut into pieces, eaten and etc I would rather the person who did that shit to me not get the satisfaction of ever being given coverage cause that's what they want, to get attention from my pain and torture, and you lot give them that shit while pretending to uphold the victims, it's sucks, stop pretending to care about the victims when u clearly don't. Besides, no one wants to be remembered like that, as a part of a story of some sick f***, a piece of his puzzle, we would all want to be remembered for the person we were before this bullshit, and by the people that actually loved and cared about us, the ones who will genuinely carry the memories of our TRUE self forever, not some randoms on the internet who ocassionally use our pain as a bed time story when they are having insomnia, or as a topic of discussion about gruesome events over lunch with their buddies, or by people who use our pain as a base of entertainment for greedy companies to make money and capitalist consumers to be entertained when there is nothing else to watch on Netflix, and at the end, they pour out some brittle sympathy for us and move on with their lives. If that's what remembering is, forget me! I will be remembered by the ones who mattered the most anyway. Especially since most people/shows/etc's "remembering" highlights the criminal more than all the people who he/she caused so much pain? Smh F that, FORGET ME! And again as I said in the other post, erasure of murders doesn't mean erasure of victims, u can go WITHOUT GIVING attention to killers and still keep the victims alive.
I was friends with someone who joined the serial killer "fandom". As I look back on it, I think she only signed up for 3 reasons: 1) she thought thought the killers were attractive 2) she was depressed 3) she didn't get attention from attractive boys in real life and murder fell into the "any attention is good attention". I wish I had said more at the time as she was obviously going through some stuff, but she was *too* deep into it by the time I found out when I was 13.
Depressed got nothin to do w it bestie. Either this girlie was lying about being depressed like every tumblr girl, or she had something else which wasn’t depression. Take it from me , I used to struggle with depression as bad as my period cramps on my 3rd day, I NOT ONCE a thought it would be fun and cute to even THINK about dating a serial killer. Nah bro get those crusty smelly blood stained fingers away from me at all times
@@pineddew I'm not trying to justify their ex-friend for crushing on serial killers, but you do know that everybody has different experiences with depression? Some people with depression would fall into the rabbit hole of serial killers because the op just gave the reasons in their comment: no romantic attention from people, and bad attention at least equals attention. This isn't to say that their ex-friend isn't crazy though for crushing on serial killers. Just everyone goes through different experiences when having depression.
Oh my god YES, no publicity for serial killers please. In Ancient Rome there was a punishment called -damnatio memorae-. The name of a person would be erased from every source imaginable and never mentioned again. I think it's a proper thing to do with criminals like this - never mention their names again. Museums often do this when vandalism happens and they're right.
@@riddlesangerissues3127 it's difficult to say with any certainty, because if the punishment was successful, the accounts would be gone as well. there were no explicit law on damnatio memorae. far as we know, the senate and later emperor could use this in exceptional circumstances.
From my brief forays into true crime, I have come to the understanding that fame creates imitators. Serial killers who become famous creates waves that lead to people doing all kinds of stuff. One of the few youtube videos I watched was about a kid who wanted to go out like the guys from columbine so he shot up the supermarket he worked at then killed himself. He did all sorts of things, like video documenting his plans and such. And it was shocking that he went so long without anyone picking up on it, he had a UA-cam channel where he did an animated series about dead teenagers doing stuff, and another that he stopped posting on after he killed off his characters brutally. And he was on a columbine fan group, which was the final kicker. If his parents weren't doing anything, the surely somewhere in the government a department must have flagged him up as a threat, if not to others lives, then his own. Or at least closed down the fangroup. It shocks me, seeing as he goy most of his ideas from the fan group, that the government isn't doing more to shut these kinds of things down.
Right like people LITERALLY died. Their family will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. Some kids lost their parents and some parents lost their kids. There’s nothing romantic about a psycho killing innocent people.
Well there was Victorian lady who would sell some "elixir" to women who were stuck in abusive relationships to serve the hubby because divorce was a no-go. In a way I stan her. In those days a teen would marry some 50.
There was a woman who was so obsessed with Ramirez that she sent him 75 letters and even married him while he was incarcerated. It was only 20 years later, after one more victim of his was revealed (a nine-year-old girl) that she "cut off ties"
Hybristophilia (attraction to criminals) is one of the most terrifying things to see and how delusional it makes people. The fact it's often tied to the "I can change him" fantasy makes my skin crawl because there's a separate set of issues involved with that. It also ignores the mask off reality that many serial killers aren't misunderstood with grandiose plans and are in fact very petty, short-sighted, and vile to the core with nothing redeeming about them or any sympathetic motivation.
U seem to be under the impression that these women are misguided angels They aren't these women know exactly what these men are and they love these men for it
@@wingknight7132 Not sure how you got that when my point was these types of fandoms always try to soften awful people in order to justify their attraction. There's nothing about being a misguided angel in that, just denying reality because horny. And how the reality of such criminals is nothing like grandiose fictional motivations that said fandoms attribute to them because humans crave a satisfying narrative.

Yes!! I remember when they announced the show You and a lot of people called them out because they were worried about it glorifying stalkers/serial killers. Well fast forward and ppl on twt are like "Joe is kinda right 🤪" "girl from the first season deserved it because she was kinda annoying". I was hoping that they would at least show how Insane and gross this behavior is but somehow they just turned it into a fun lil show about a serial killer doing his thing 🥺 I hate it
I hate it when people completely miss the point of a piece of media. What these groupies don't know is that they would act exactly like the first girl because she was normal. She was a human who had flaws and whom obviously was rightfully freaked out about Joe's behaviour. They would all be Guinevere Becks.
It's attitudes like these that promote toxic and problematic behavior in people. When toxicity is worshipped and seen as attractive, why would people make the effort to be nice?
also the fact that serial killers get cool nicknames like "The Night Stalker" and "Jack the Ripper" and other stuff like "the beast of ..." or "the butcher of..." add to the drama but also glamourize them and focuses on the murderer rather than their victims
These are the kinds of people who would be swayed by a young & handsome Tom Riddle, just because he is young & handsome. And then they would, A. either turn a blind eye to his murders, or B. end up murdered themselves. Or both.
Not only he was young and handsome. but his biggest trait was his almost Charles Manson charisma, high intelligence, and being a great manipulator. he's basically Wizarding World's Ted Bundy (with a little bit of Hitler).
I I love this video and your content and I think this topic is so important to talk about, but I do have one thing to add! Ted Bundy was played by Zac Efron in the Netflix movie Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile because he would use his charm to trick his victims and the story was also kind of being told from Liz’s perspective which is why he’s portrayed by Zac Efron because he’s so publicly loved, but also because he used that to his advantage to kill and not get caught. He wasn’t portrayed by Zac Efron to romanticize him or make him look like a better person, he was played by Zac Efron because he so beloved, was very charming and charismatic, and very cute and that’s kind of how Ted Bundy was and why he had so many fans. also can we talk about the fact that ted bundy isn’t even cute ???? idk what was wrong with his fans😭
YES THANK YOU. That movie gets a lot of unnecessary flack. It's made from Liz's point of view because it's BASED ON HER BOOK she and her daughter were on set giving thier input, Lily Collins talked to her about how she felt about how she was portraying her, what she thought she should do or change, etc Zac Efron took a 99% pay cut to make sure the movie got all the money it did to being made The guy who made it isn't only also behind the Bundy Tapes Documentary, BUT he also made the documentaries that led to the West Memphis 3 having their case be made national and eventually released. This director walks the walk Infact he said he casted Zac Efron because as OP said he had his charm. Because to a whole generation he has a face that sets people at ease cause they think Disney, he has a trustworthy face, much like how Bundy did at the time. It was to highlight how these killers can manipulate you into trusting them
This is such a good video. I actually did a paper and presentation of how the mass media coverage of school shootings has started literal fan groups and copycat shootings
it was normalized. People will literally be like “OmG i LoVe hIm” about a serial killer and most people won’t say a thing. And the fact that there’s a name for it??? Like what?!?! People need to see that there is an issue with this.
First the media should stop giving them cool names like 'The dark knight shooter'. Just give a name like 'Small Dick Rick' and there won't be another killer
I’m really glad you gave that trigger warning for cereal, as I have had a fear of cereal for a while now and if you hadn’t given that warning I wouldn’t have been prepared. Thx for caring ❤️❤️❤️🥣
As far as who can play Emily in a biopic? There is a show called “Orphan Black” where the actress plays a bunch of clones, all with vastly different personalities. Only she can play Emily.
remember when there was a funding campaign for Yuka Takaoka the "real life yandere" and they wanted to get her out of jail because she was "cute" ? Yeah.... :|
The yandere trope confuses me deeply because they are almost always women, despite the fact that you'd be a thousand times liker to find that kind of behavior in real life in a man.
What sucks is that shows like You in particular are made to shine a light on the ridiculousness of this stan behaviour and how men being attractive causes a major halo effect. I seem to recall the same sort of point being made about casting Zac as Ted Bundy, like it was very intentional. A discussion can definitely be had here as to whether showing something means you're endorsing it. I personally don't think that a show focusing on a terrible person is inherently sympathetic to them, but it's also naive of writers and show runners to think that people will be able to critically consume media. (some media can glorify however, and the distinction is important to understand).
I mean, I came back from Bundy's biopic with Efron to actually horrify me. You sympathize with him for a bit, but in the end, I never got the idea from it of "Bundy so sexy, I stan". But that might be my own bias as someone who came into the movie hating Bundy, so idk if someone else who was into Bundy in that way would get the same message.
Y'all aware that the film is based on the biography of Bundy's ex gf Lisa? so that's why he seems quite romanticize in half of it because the story is in Lisa's perspective. and I am honestly not bothered about Zac being casted, as apparently Bundy is considered attractive by some people in his time, especially I even remember that interview of one of his almost victim, although she was quite traumatized by the incident she still described Bundy as charming and "very attractive" and that shît says a lot.
I was watching the new documentary about jeffery dahmer and his victims and people are romanticizing him!??? Like WHY he killed 17 *innocent* People!! It just makes me so so mad that these chronically online weirdos can just do that, it’s insane.
I do agree crime is highly empowered by the media portraying it in the various ways. I must admit though I have always been fascinated with the character Dr Hannibal Lector.
I’ve been into analog horror recently and now I need background noise to keep myself from panicking that I’ll get killed by something supernatural, so thanks for the v enjoyable content
There is something to be said about finding an interest in these people because they are fascinating on a psychological level. But interesting doesn't mean good. It just means there's a point where we want to investigate what makes them tick. The people who glamorize serial killers are not interested in them. They're interested in playing out a fantasy of their own, which is often from a place of delusion. On one hand, they're like the fat, oiled pigs laying themselves out on a platter with an apple already in their mouths. They make themselves the perfect target for most of the killers. Or, they're the kind that would 100% fall into a cult mentality, which is how you have people like Manson running around with people following him. There's a line between finding someone interesting enough to research them and glamorizing someone, and that line is _not_ a fine one.
Honestly, one of the few seriel killer docuseries I like, is Gacy: Devil in Disguise. Because when talking about the murders, and John Wayne Gacy himself. They focus a lot on the victims, and I feel like the seriel killer should be an after thought, the main focus should be the lives they ruined, and how these families will be changed. Forever.
There is a difference between being curious about how these people’s minds work because they seem to lack any empathy that could have been there, but to OBSESS over them? That is screwed up
could you maybe make a video talking about “the bad boys” in movies or the presentation of “popular people” in movies vs how it actually is? love your vids
I also remember reading a case about a girl who murdered her boyfriend where what the public had to say in the end was: "Oh what a pretty girl" Like, did you just ignore the fact that she murdered her boyfriend with a smile on her face and acted like nothing happened????😭😭
Not technically a serial killer but a MASS GENOCIDE COMMITTING DICTATOR. My ex-friend used to write Hitler fanfiction. There's a good reason why she's an ex friend.
I used to have a friend (key word, USED) who viewed serial killers romantically- not even exclusively real serial killers, like, had a thing for Scream killers too? They used to talk about how romantic they thought it would be if someone killed for them; honestly it was so wild. And for whatever reason they now view serial killers as "father figures, but like I have daddy issues >:3". Obviously this pushed me over the edge and now I just ignore them.
tcctwt or wtv they call themselves actuallt pisses me off so bad.. they’ll have “i don’t condone” in their bio and literally post picture of some ugly serial killer guy saying “i love him 🥺🥺” WDYM U DONT CONDONE
Even Penn Badgley thinks that people are romancising Joe's actions, despite the narrative making it clear that they're SERIOUSLY problematic. It doesn't help that Joe's narration justifies his killing spree, to the point where even Millie Bobby Brown thought he was a decent guy, before retracting her comments later on.

The weirdest part for me is that those killers are not even that handsome as they make it out to be, they’re just conventionally attractive.
Most of them are even under that
They're better looking than the others.
Eg: Gary Ridgway, Dennis Rader, etc.

Most are downright ugly lol
They're not even attractive and even if they were...how can someone be attracted to a murderer???

Someone needs to find a way to get rid of the 60% water in the human body and replace it with holy water, specifically for these types of people who glamorize serial killers and other bad people.
THIS 😭
There is also a lot of feces in holy water
a side note: im so happy to see how much you've grown after grinding youtube for a while! it took way too long for people to catch on, but your audience has grown so much- very deserved (: ✨✨

Yes i just found her a week ago i agree with almost all of what she says in her videos
I was horrified by how many people were casually theorizing about that one vloggers death a few months ago like it was a fun piece of entertainment and not someone who died less than a week ago…
I feel for these people’s families…
@@kingexplosionmurderfuckoff9376
I replied to ur comment in another post, dude u keep defending these serial killers in the pretense of supporting and remembering the victims as if that is even done anyways right now, most people know f*** ALL about the victims....
As I look back on it, I think she only signed up for 3 reasons:
1) she thought thought the killers were attractive
2) she was depressed
3) she didn't get attention from attractive boys in real life and murder fell into the "any attention is good attention".
I wish I had said more at the time as she was obviously going through some stuff, but she was *too* deep into it by the time I found out when I was 13.
That's depressing.
Do you know if she got out?
Depressed got nothin to do w it bestie. Either this girlie was lying about being depressed like every tumblr girl, or she had something else which wasn’t depression. Take it from me , I used to struggle with depression as bad as my period cramps on my 3rd day, I NOT ONCE a thought it would be fun and cute to even THINK about dating a serial killer. Nah bro get those crusty smelly blood stained fingers away from me at all times
@@pineddew Nice try. You can't speak for a group of millions of people.
We should do that again for all murderers, terrorists...
What crime would a person commit to receive that kind of erasure?
@@riddlesangerissues3127 it's difficult to say with any certainty, because if the punishment was successful, the accounts would be gone as well. there were no explicit law on damnatio memorae. far as we know, the senate and later emperor could use this in exceptional circumstances.
@@riddlesangerissues3127 Thats a scary thaught, knowing that there will be no trace of your esistense once the last person who knows you dies
Honestly, I think that's stupid. By erasing the killer's, you are also erasing their victims.
This has nothing to do with the topic but I just got terrible dejavu reading your comment. Like I would swear I've read this before
ohh i saw this case too
No its literally disrespectful to the victims and their families its not quirky or daddy issues its trash and the girls that do that fr need help
so truee
Right like people LITERALLY died. Their family will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. Some kids lost their parents and some parents lost their kids. There’s nothing romantic about a psycho killing innocent people.
“There are fictional killer women I find attractive”
Same Emily, same.
me three.
me four
Well there was Victorian lady who would sell some "elixir" to women who were stuck in abusive relationships to serve the hubby because divorce was a no-go. In a way I stan her. In those days a teen would marry some 50.
There was a woman who was so obsessed with Ramirez that she sent him 75 letters and even married him while he was incarcerated. It was only 20 years later, after one more victim of his was revealed (a nine-year-old girl) that she "cut off ties"
bruh that's sad
Hybristophilia (attraction to criminals) is one of the most terrifying things to see and how delusional it makes people. The fact it's often tied to the "I can change him" fantasy makes my skin crawl because there's a separate set of issues involved with that. It also ignores the mask off reality that many serial killers aren't misunderstood with grandiose plans and are in fact very petty, short-sighted, and vile to the core with nothing redeeming about them or any sympathetic motivation.
U seem to be under the impression that these women are misguided angels
They aren't these women know exactly what these men are and they love these men for it
@@wingknight7132 Not sure how you got that when my point was these types of fandoms always try to soften awful people in order to justify their attraction.

I was hoping that they would at least show how Insane and gross this behavior is but somehow they just turned it into a fun lil show about a serial killer doing his thing 🥺 I hate it
Oh my yes I felt so uncomfortable watching You because it glamorized Joe's crazy behavior.
I was once come across a Columbine shooters stan account on twitter and oh boy, I was horrified of the stuff that they are saying.
Richard didn’t even have a nice bone structure he was missing teeth. Y’all like poor hygiene too?!

“Mass Murder = Fame” is basically the viewpoint of Kurt Kunkle from Spree

Right he looks like a retired history teacher
YES THANK YOU. That movie gets a lot of unnecessary flack. It's made from Liz's point of view because it's BASED ON HER BOOK she and her daughter were on set giving thier input, Lily Collins talked to her about how she felt about how she was portraying her, what she thought she should do or change, etc
Zac Efron took a 99% pay cut to make sure the movie got all the money it did to being made
The guy who made it isn't only also behind the Bundy Tapes Documentary, BUT he also made the documentaries that led to the West Memphis 3 having their case be made national and eventually released. This director walks the walk
Infact he said he casted Zac Efron because as OP said he had his charm.
Thirsting over serial killers is so common, that there's a NAME for it. Do you know how sad and concerning that is?
it was normalized.
You are funny but right... 😂👍
Or Billy the Kid.
"You're right, we should go with Scarlett Johansson" made me spit out my water.

As far as who can play Emily in a biopic? There is a show called “Orphan Black” where the actress plays a bunch of clones, all with vastly different personalities. Only she can play Emily.
You mean Tatiana Maslany?
I love the fact that your videos are like informative lectures mixed with witty skits. The skits bring me back to the old UA-cam days.
remember when there was a funding campaign for Yuka Takaoka the "real life yandere" and they wanted to get her out of jail because she was "cute" ? Yeah.... :|
“Oh my gosh! A real life Yandere that’s so hot!!!”
How about get therapy and find a girl who wouldn’t kill your dog for your attention?
The yandere trope confuses me deeply because they are almost always women, despite the fact that you'd be a thousand times liker to find that kind of behavior in real life in a man.
@@IsaMa-dz5gu So true- 😭
What sucks is that shows like You in particular are made to shine a light on the ridiculousness of this stan behaviour and how men being attractive causes a major halo effect. I seem to recall the same sort of point being made about casting Zac as Ted Bundy, like it was very intentional. A discussion can definitely be had here as to whether showing something means you're endorsing it. I personally don't think that a show focusing on a terrible person is inherently sympathetic to them, but it's also naive of writers and show runners to think that people will be able to critically consume media. (some media can glorify however, and the distinction is important to understand).
Also, they choose wildly handsome people for the role and beauty is associated with attraction and goodness. So theres something up tho
It’s especially disgusting to me how women will fantasize about or romanticize serial killers that have committed heinous CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN
"we should go with Scarlett Johansson" LMAO that was a good one
I was watching the new documentary about jeffery dahmer and his victims and people are romanticizing him!??? Like WHY he killed 17 *innocent* People!! It just makes me so so mad that these chronically online weirdos can just do that, it’s insane.
I do agree crime is highly empowered by the media portraying it in the various ways. I must admit though I have always been fascinated with the character Dr Hannibal Lector.
his fanbase from the NBC tv show is so funny because they stan him but also will make fun of him too.
Being fascinated isn’t wrong. I’m fascinated with how their mind works. Big difference with idolizing them.

This makes me sick, imagine the victims family seeing these, people praising the monster that took their loved one away from them.
That is screwed up
the scarlett johanssen part though
I agree with you 100% and the media treatment of the " Idaho killer" is a perfect example of what not to do.

Even Penn Badgley thinks that people are romancising Joe's actions, despite the narrative making it clear that they're SERIOUSLY problematic.
