Reminds me of the ole juxtoposition of a photo next to an article about like a sex offender, and people go "yep that guy fits the bill" and then you show them the picture was for a different article that was just next to the sex offender one. As soon as I noticed how the concept of 'likeability' is almost only ever used for women, I notice it happening all the time. Often a woman will get really popular and then you'll hear people start hating on her for reasons such as "she just isn't very likeable" or "there's just something about her that I don't like". Likeability is always vague and obscure. You hardly ever hear people saying "I just don't like him" in reference to a male celebrity, when there is hate for a man it's usually brought on by some specific incident. A lot of hate for popular women is just misogyny, and it's so often young women in particular that are the targets. 😔

Women more so then men yes, but it's not exclusive to them. I think the Robert Pattinson comparison is a little more nuanced than that. The Twilight films have been almost universally agreed upon that they're "so-bad-they're-good." While the original Disney movie is still pretty beloved by the audience the live action remake is targeted towards. Plus, she unfortunately just happened to be casted at a time when that same audience has grown tired and weary of the new wave of capitalism-driven, girl-boss feminism in media, so I think it was seen as a betrayal by the audience (+ plus the slew of other criticisms there are for that movie over casting etc.) However, I definitely agree that hatred definitely skews toward women because if a man had said what she said, he would probably be applauded.

I really resound with this! Your first sentence describes exactly how I felt (and sometimes continue feeling, but I'm ~depacking/unlearning~ that) when I saw popular people at my school follow trends. I defined those people based on their following trends for their popularity instead of the activity or person themself, which made me a not fun/amiable person to be around. Now that I'm trying these activities out for myself, they're being fun (Taylor Swift too, trying out aesthetic styles and trendy clothes, etc.), and I hope that by branching out I'll be able to become a better person to be around (both with others.. and myself!).

Like people complaining that princesses are too "girlboss" now and the feminism in Disney movies is forced and even anti-feminist sometimes. The problem is that Rachel herself admitted she was unfamiliar with the original movie, and talked down the original Snow White character. It felt like she was punching down on the 1930s Snow White to prop up her own which is the antithesis of feminism IMHO. The original Disney Snow White is very for it's time, but that's still not a reason to write off a 14-year-old girl who went through some pretty horrific stuff (a murder attempt by a family member, getting lost in the woods, and then being killed). Rachel even says the Prince was "stalking" Snow White, when really the guy was basically a walking deus ex machina.
Someone mentioned before that many are getting really tired of the capitalistic girl-bossification right out of 2012 of Disney Princesses right now, and that's very true. Female characters don't have to be this way to be considered "strong". Being kind is not weak, and being brave and confident does not mean you need to be an asshole. This is why the 2015 remake of Cinderella is the only remake that works on pretty much all counts.
That being said, Rachel is young. I think she just needs some media training, and maybe time to grow up and learn nuance.

Anyway he ended up going to a newspaper, doxing me, and putting me all over the internet, which even if u don’t like trans people, doxing a 15 year old is SOMETHING. my former best friend was the perfect example of people "hating everything just because it is popular". when I told her I like Taylor Swift she really said "no, she is too hyped, and if everyone likes it, I don't." I could go down the psychology road of why some people desperately search reasons to be "special", but honestly, it is one of MANY reasons why we are no longer friends and it was one aspect of her own insecurity. it is absolutely okay to not like things that are popular, because YOU do not like them, not because many other people like it or because it is popular. There is a reason why things are popular and, of course, I had my fair share of things where I asked myself "why do people like that?", but I certainly no longer judge them for liking something I don't.
some people need to feel special, but almost all of them do not know that hating on something doesn't make you interesting. often, it just makes you look petty. what makes you really interesting is just being you, not because you hate on something that is popular for the sake of hating it. my advice, if you don't like something, let it go, ignore it, and keep petty and hateful comments to yourself. if you like something, be supportive about it, but don't start worshipping it like a damn deity (as some people seem to do with not only actors or celebrities, but also with media). always be critical and careful about the things you read, see and hear on the internet, but doing that doesn't mean you cannot enjoy the hell out of it.

I also as far as music like to collect music from really small bands bc I like how they sound of course but I also want to be one of their og fans that spreads them around so they get more popular! If it's lyrics you care about, you had ought to give folk music a go. There is alot of heart in most folk songs, especially those adapted from poetry and some lyrics can send a shiver down one's spine.
For example in Redgum's song Long Run they sing,
      "Australia marched out of Vietnam
Out on the streets against Uncle Sam,
We won the fight, it was a long one"
(These lines pack a punch if you are familiar with the abusive marriage that is US-Australia relations)
Or, sticking to the Vietnam theme, in Dave Van Ronk's anti-war song Luang Prabang he sings,
"When I came back from Luang Prabang,
I didn't have a thing where my balls used to hang,
But I got a wooden medal and a fine harangue
      Now I'm a fucking hero
Mourn your dead land of the free
If you want to be a hero, follow me,
Mourn your dead land of the free
If you wanna be a hero, follow me"
And just to give an example that isn't related to the Vietnam war, in the song The Peat Bog Soldiers, which is an English translation of a German song written from inside a concentration camp by German socialists (by which I mean the actual socialists, who the pretend socialists incharge at the time wanted dead), there is the stanza,
"But for us there is no complaining,
Winter will in time be past.
One day we will cry rejoicing.
Homeland, dear, you're mine at last.
Then will the Peat Bog Soldiers,
March no more with their spades to the moor."

Glad you've touched upon Rachel, I don't know much about her besides her being good at musical theater, but the amount of reactionary propaganda that uses her as the face of the "woke libs" they hate so cultishly, and the truly bizarre anger people direct at her for a harmless opinion is honesty so shocking yet oddly unsurprising. People love rage bait and joining a mob, but the thing is criticism of her has always been so inconsistent that its baffling, for some she's too dark and somehow racist against white people (lol) for taking a role in a german fairytale, for others she's too white to call herself latina (despite it being a diaspora based ethnicity category, not a race) and for others she's too american to call herself latina (despite the fact that latino has almost always referred to diaspora and expats, not latin americans living within LATAM) and somehow offending many online latinamericans by calling herself that (especialmente mexicanos y argentinos), while not speaking any language spoken here which again, people have never before had an issue with, since again latino/a was typically about diaspora once (many latin americans calling for the casting of a "whiter" latina to prove that we can be white and worthy). It's all soooo silly, and when it comes to the fairytale movie (that she's starring in alongside a woman who vocally supports genocide) is that, it's been a part of pop culture to poke fun at how creepy and unrealistic most 50s disney movies would be IRL, and how dated they are to the american ideals of the 1950s (not its realities, only a romanticized version) like the fact that this teenage girl got married to a much older prince she barely knew or how silly it is that she was living with 7 strangers and etc, but somehow when its someone deemed "woke" and therefore an enemy or "undesirable" it's suddenly the most disrespectful sight and a transgression against beloved culture. It's hypocritical and tribalistic.

i do want to say that the prince being some much older guy in his 30s is a myth. specific ages are never stated in the film, but they're both supposed to be teenagers. however, disney didn't have much experience with animating realistic humans at the time, and i don’t think their references were always 1:1 design wise so they don’t look exactly their age. they don’t get married at the end either, just walk off into the sunset (although there is wedding snow merch it was just made up for sales.). also, snow white was released in the 30s, not the 50s, so it was taken a lot more seriously as it was the first time people really saw more realistic animation- the emotional moments were celebrated as part of the escapism. so while snow is not some great feminist role model, her persevering kindness and the unrealistic/fantastical nature of the story was serving a purpose. i'm not saying that disney movies are undeserving of criticism- far from it- but the ways in which their films are considered problematic by the general public are usually based on misconceptions that get further warped by a very surface level understanding of both feminism and animation as a medium. and this in turn has made disney overcorrect things that were never really issues, keeping men in the director's chair while trying to be self-aware about how their princesses are totally not like other girls now instead of doing the work to understand how they could actually improve. it sucks because the conservative backlash over this usually causes liberals to support the movie out of spite when the movie isn't even saying anything worthwhile.
totally agree with you about the casting of rachel herself though. it sucks that people are being critical because a younger actress used disney's pr talking points a little messily instead of the fact that an actual whole-hearted zionist is her costar. sorry for the super long reply, i’m very passionate about animation history so i tend to talk a lot in that department!

I was SO Fucking guilty of this. That whole "I'm not mainstream" thing. I was a loser and had no friends, so it was understandable. Now that I understand the need for communal relationships, I'm better.
But though, in defense of the whole mainstream narrative, I think a genuine reason someone can have for disliking something going mainstream rather than the "I'm not like other girls" stereotype or the "pick me, I'm weird" guy stereotype is: Sometimes when some TV shows or movies go mainstream, they can lose their original meaning.
Like for example, the Cyberpunk genre, when it started, it was more Philosophical and had a lot of political messaging in it's stories and the representation it got on media in the 80's. It became mainstream as at the 90's, which again, to it's credit, saw a surge of remarkable Cyberpunk stories and media.
However... As time went on into the 2000's and the present, Cyberpunk as a genre is now somewhat dying because many companies are only interested in replicating the aesthetics (which I still fucking love so much), and doing less of the Philosophical commentary and messaging.
Sure, it's not really that bad, I'm not a gatekeeper, but it's a subtle change.
So yeah, at the end I still agree with you hating something for being mainstream because it's mainstream is just hyper-Individualistic cringe, and it's embarrassing.
Having a niche interest isn't even that great to begin with, you have to find people who can relate(and I suffered and continue to suffer from it till today).
Having niche interests is nothing unique or "weird" or "remarkable", any niche thing anyone can think of has a massive fanbase, it's just a lack of knowledge about it, and it's lack of mainstream. Doesn't make it unique.
The most annoying part of it is when it turns into some sort of dumb competition about superiority of taste in art, main character syndrome (like you wouldn't be going to comment on something you hate if you hate it, why bother?), Intellectual gatekeeping ("Rick and Morty" Cringe period of Szechuan Sauce), and just toxicity. It's obnoxious.
Our Capitalistic Hellscape of a world has made many of us believe we are rugged heroes from many of Ayn Rand's terrible books.
Nice video again, as usual.❤ Your acting just illustrated how dumb this whole thing of "mainstream" vs. "niche" is.

Like how it's harder to do chores if someone asks you to do them? And it's rarely a problem, but obvi when stuff gets popular, people are like "omg you should watch/read/listen to this" and its like well now I don't want to? So it's not intentional nicheness it's just, ,, a response to being asked to like something? Usually it doesn't end up being personal to an actor or director tho, it just blocks interaction with media. Do other people get this?

    - I've noticed that A LOT of celebrities are aware of "regular" people's struggles. This especially goes for celebrities who are younger or are minorities (though this is not the rule).
    - I consider people's negative feelings toward Jennifer Lawrence's quirkiness and tomboy-ish nature to be just as bad as people being weird about gitls/woman who are "too girly."
    - I'm annoyed by some famous women's personalities and decisions- like Rachel Zegler - but that does not mean I hate them or even dislike their work. Honestly, so many people - famous or not - just want to judge and hate people.
