    I'm getting this comment a lot so just one major clarification: You do not have to go for a launch every time. I use it as a major example here, but the comments are right, it's much safer much of the time to use a less risky option.
    Now some people are mentioning that you should wait and react to a whiffed option. I think as you progress through your Tekken journey, I would agree. However for a new player, I think simply sidestepping and using an option as part of a sequence is a totally fine way to begin implementing this idea into your game plan.
    Sorry for not making this more clear in the video!

    I've played competitive Tekken since TTT1 and generally it goes like this:
    - Most characters will have a "top 10 most used moves" (some players will try to get a bit more creative, so it's always good to potentially up the number and prepare for others), most moves will **generally** have a weaker side, figure out what side that is.
    - As a **general rule of thumb** (there are exceptions, these will need to be labbed), opponents' moves that are left limbed, you sidestep to *YOUR* left (if you're on the left side of the screen/player 1, then you sidestep up, flip things around for right side/player 2).
    - Try to get information from your opponent and make plays off their habits, do a jab, do they try to duck after? Do a mid after you jab then. Swap your jab out for another move and figure out their habits and how they try to approach a match. This will help your general gameplay but then also get you thinking about how to make informed decisions. Of course, sometimes you will be wrong but at the very least you're not going in completely blind.

For example against DVJ, figure out the situations to SS after his b,f+2,1 strings and how to SS his EWGF. Or for Bryan, maybe learn the sorta feel for SSing his b+1 or 3+4. It is at best inconvenient, and at worst incredibly counter-productive, to use captions to convey information when it's done word-per-word.

    0:44 you can actually make your sidestep safe by cancelling it with block. The most optimal way I've found from the pros & youtube is that you have to sidewalk then block as soon as the sidewalk animation starts. Load up a replay of Arslan, JDCR or Knee and you'd see the same thing in action. Easier said than done in a real match as a beginner but you can train this by making the CPU punish with a homing move on block. I think the move needs to be at least -3 on block, otherwise, do not even try to sidestep

    I'd like to add that shouldn't really sidestep automatically into an attack unless you really have a super hard read like shown in the video. If sidestepping is risky, sidestepping and attacking rght after is even worse. Doesn't mean it's a bad strat, but that shouldn't be your main use of sidestepping up close.
    What you want to do ideally is to sidestep and then immediately block, see if your opponent whiffed a reasonably slow move, and then do your punish. And dont be greedy, it doesn't need to always be a launcher. Better to do a quick punish than risk failing a slower one and get punished yourself.
    As a general tip, always find the safest way to apply a strategy. The longer you stay alive the more opportunities and info you'll get.

    Unless you're anticipating a specific move or positioning it's almost always better to sidestep to your opponent's OUTSIDE. (Meaning the direction which will place your closer to their back) moves that track will often hit you to the opponent's inside, so be mindful of this.
    Some characters can change their footing, also when you switch sides, the "outside" of your opponent reverses too. So if you were on the left, sidestep to the background to get to Kazuya's outside. If you're on the right, sidestep toward the screen.

    I came to this conclusion as well. I was searching options of why I don't see better players jabbing so often. I understand that crouching beats jab, but it's still very risky to do this. I think sidestep is the answer.

    • @Supertacodonut
      @Supertacodonut 11 місяців тому +2

      Not only does crouching beat jab like you said, you have to understand any attack thrown out has the potential to get punished. Not all jabs are equal. That’s where the poking game comes in and you lose a round to an opponent that has their punishes on point. Now factor in throw breaking, good defense and then sidestepping? Now your up against a threat

    Although I agree that you can go on a predetermined sequence like sidestep into launch, it is possible to confirm what the opponent whiffed and then react accordingly. This is a very high level thing but if you find yourself at an advanced level, it's something you could work on to go up to the next level. It's kind of an oldschool playstyle but koreans like JDCR and Knee are gods at confirming a whiff into a punish from sidestep. Not necessary at low-intermediate levels though.

    One part you'll hear about tekken-heads is that if you do " sidestep and launch as a complete sequence and not try to react", You can sometimes preemptively attack before your opponent's attack has finished yet, which can actually "expand your hitbox" and make you WAY more likely to be hit instead of evading their attack.
    One thing to note is moves with a double or triple forward, quater forward or come out from a wavesdash can sometimes have some extra tracking because of doing the input can help realign against the opponent.

      I'll add to this that it is also likely to happen if you have dedicated yourself to 2D fighters before switching to Tekken. This is because you get used to have less time to do things and have quicker reactions, so you do things not considering that everything, including active frames, take much longer so even if you read correctly predicting too much ahead is very dangerous

    Been playing 2D FGs for years and I have that genre down pat, but I started 3D with Tekken 7 and sidestepping has always been so foreign to me. And every video that talks about it became so convoluted to me. This was exactly what I needed to hear right now because I have been sidestepping in between strings just to get clipped in the end.

  • @TheAciditty
    @TheAciditty 11 місяців тому

    I like to think of it like as an extension of a string mentally that makes it easier to parse.
    So say 2,3 leaves me -2f so in my head the string is 2,3,u(d),delay,b which makes it safer and blocks tracking moves that are 12f or greater if you see the whiff then punish. You can counter this by pressing forward before you attack to realign with opponents off axis.
    As you get more and more fluid with movement in the game a common thing to add in your gameplan to try and open up an opponent or learn how they react is jab SS cancel, kbd, b then just see what they do. SS cancel, high crush or low crush are other possible options as well if your character has viable "safe" moves for these things.
    Pressing back on sidestep cancels the SS instantly, easy shortcut would be u, delay, ub, b or d, delay, db, b. Using this you can micro step for realignment in combos or most usefully with sidestep cancel then duck into punish as the cancel makes ducking faster possible.

    This is a bit more advanced but sidestepping from really upclose increases the angle of the sidestep.
    So yeah, walking forward and then immediately sidestepping as soon as you "touch" your opponent is a thing. It creates whiffs that regular sidesteps would not create.
    At your own risk though. Lab it before trying.

  • @8bit_pineapple

    3k hours in T7 and placed okay in locals.
    This guide is fine for beggginers.
    Sidestepping when you are -5 to plus is usually okay.
    And you are right you can do that after a move like a df1.
    Doing d/f 1 SS hopkick to beat a jab can work - just make sure you are consciously doing it as a read and don't autopilot this flowchart. Usually you want to look out for a wiff and wiff punish big moves on reaction.
    When you get more experience with the game you should be sidestepping with a move in mind.
    But this comes down to matchup knowledge and studying situations.
    A good idea is to lab each characters main techniques and figure out which direction (if any) they are weak to.
    Then during a match you may think something like -- huh my opponent only approaches me with moves that can be stepped -- or the opposite when playing vs Steve and Bryan 😅

    thats what i came up when really trying to maximize movement usage in my gameplay: treat sidestepping in netral like a counterhit attempt, because attaks realign when the button is pressed, so if you happen to start your sidewalk right after your opponent presses it will whiff unless its azucena wr32. Also i use sideteps to create timing mixup easy example: pauls df4 is -2ob everything pressed on instant timing will whiff on sidewalk, so your opponent options are: mash and get launched, use a homing move and get thrown/magic4d or just stand still and watch you walk so mix up is how long they gonna watch you? i kinda remember that i try to catch timing very effective played against my ghost doing that and its really, really hard to deal with. also baby sidestep block is super safe and can lead to huge reward i just randomly do this while beeing ready for whiff good shit

    Actually what you wanna do is do something like df1 then side step and see if they whiffed something. If it's a move with fast recovery then simply perform a fast attack you don't need a launch every time or you can do something that's plus on block and gives you pressure or you can go for a mixup because they saw your side step and will try to block upcoming attack.
    You can go for side step into launcher or any other button without confirming the whiff which leaves you susceptible to counter hits but it depends on character to character since kazuya has df2 a homing counter hit launcher.
    Launch on attacks with large recovery like kazuyas f2, ff2, f4, ewhf etc.
    You can also perform a sidewalk for better evasion.
    Learn which side is weak for each character.
    I'll try making a video for better explanation.

    Wanna sidestep in neutral!? You just need to intricately know the move-sets and game-plans of all 32 characters. You also need to know which specific direction to sidestep for many of those moves. Also a lot of times it’s not reacting, it’s guessing they are gonna throw out (this) move (because you need to know their character move-set and game-plan) basically just memorize the entire game and meta then you might be able to start implementing sidesteps. Start off with popular/high tier characters.
    Getting to be a high level player on fighting games is like a job but they say you never work if you love what you do.

    Some characters have really bad tracking on their key moves, and they recover super slowly, so you can whiff punish easily. In my experience Brian, Asuka and the bears are such characters. Just abuse the side stepping until you get them to start using slow homing moves and either counter hit them or block and use the frames to mix them.

    Poking into sidestep into nothing is also good too. You can whiff punish on reaction very effectively without committing to a launcher on a read. This also lets you gather data and condition the opponent.

    Thanks, man. This was actually really helpful. Is sidestepping an effective tool against very spammy, high-pressure characters like Steve and Hwoarang or do I just have to duck/block and punish them?

    i dont know if anyone mentioned this but u can block and sidestep at the same time by sidestep then cancel by imputing back during the input. this only works for highs and mids tho plz ping this people need to know this tech btw my credibility is ganyu rank

    I started sidestepping after getting blasted by someone that was abusing an attack that seemed too good to be true and I found out by accident it was terrible on whiff and sidestepping always made it miss(shame I only realized after losing two matches in a row lol)

    8 is my first Tekken and i've been maining Steve and he seems to live or die on his sidesteps so i'd like to think i'm getting the hang of them.

      Important note every character in tekken has a strong and weak side to side step. I havnt learned all of it for 8 but like that's a rule that's still mostly true in alot of 3d fighters and previous tekkens.

    As a Lili player, you can sidestep pretty safely til -4 disadvantage. Anything higher than -4 would be risky.

      How do you feel about it compared to T7? Her sidestep in T8 (I’m thinking everyone’s sidestep at this point…) got nerfed so hard.

    • @bayonetta8893
      @bayonetta8893 11 місяців тому

      I feel like it’s the exact opposite. I think most of the character side step is buffed a bit on T8. But Lili’s got even better now that her ↘️1 is only -1 on block and her SS 1+2 is 0 and got even more -2 attacks. Those really compliments her SS game.

    tbh, if i want to look cool, i will try to side walk instead of side step, because not only this is safer in my opinion, but if you have good timing, its pretty safe, i always do it on hopes and prayers. i just read for any incoming tracking attacks.
    if you have good timing, sidewalk is pretty much jin's parry but a little different.
    im currently having trouble with diarrhea and learning combos from the side, and especially wall distance combo optimization on sidestepping.
    edit: if you really want to troll your opponent and punch him in the ass, if you are jin, sidewalk into the foreground and then do U+2.
    lmao its always so funny and opens up the opponent

    Funny how only recently I learned that 1 = Left Punch and 2 = Right Punch. (Been playing since Tekken 3)
    So with this new information, if you notice that the jab is coming from the 2. Then you want to side step to the left

    • @loops9508
      @loops9508  11 місяців тому

      It's a bit more complex than this, but worth keeping in mind. Small correction: Their 2 would be their right hand, which since they're facing you covers your left side. You would have to sidestep to your right to avoid a strike from their right.

    • @loops9508

      You can buffer the input by doing it before df1 is over to make sure you step on the first available frame.

    quick question, how did you conclude that you have 9 frames to move around, was it beacuse the df1 was -1 on hit which meant that your best case was to ss ?

    • @loops9508
      @loops9508  11 місяців тому +1

      I know I have 9 frames because df1 is -1 on block, and the fastest thing my opponent can do is 10 frames. SS isn't necessarily the best case, it's just one of many options you can integrate here. I cover a few more in my "never lose to mashing" video.
