    Thanks for the video. My 95 Dodge Ram was doing exactly what you described, and when I removed the electrical from the IAC, cleaned the contacts, and put it back, she runs perfectly now. Your video saved me a lot of time and money. Cheers!

    Informative vid. I just cleaned the throttle butterfly on my 97 explorer but it didn't really help the rough idle situation. I checked out the IAC and discovered that its gasket was missing and the solenoid was very stiff; pretty much stuck. Here's hoping the new IAC fixes it.

    Man the diagnosis was spot on.. engine stumbles in drive or reverse, revs high in neutral, and when it stumbles it stalls out when it's cold. Too bad IAC for my car runs $200, and the junk yard is bone dry.

    Most of the time you can just clean it. I did mine yesterday, it was caked with about a 1/8 inch thick layer of black crud. Clean it with some throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush. And if your IAC is dirty, your throttle body is dirty too. Take the whole throttle body off and clean it up the same way. Make a HUGE difference on my 5.2 V8 in my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

  • @Nachona2700
    @Nachona2700 13 років тому

    @nicawarrior1 Cleaning the throttle body will help because I did it and saw a difference. When I accelerate the pedal is fine but once I reach over 30mph it kind of sticks because it stays idled and I literally have to make a complete stop for the idle to get back to normal. Another problem that I have is that when I reach up to 50+ mph and push the gas pedal all the way in the truck hesitates and shakes a bit and it does not respond quick. Does your truck have the same problem? Thanks.

    Hello and thank you for the video. My car, a honda civic mk8 has a problem when I disengage the manual gear meaning that the rpm drops for a second below the nominal value of 750rpm. It only happens when lights are on or ac is on.I suspect it is the idle air control valve that needs to be cleaned but not sure about that. I would be thankfully if you could reply with your opinion based on the information I provided above.

    Backfiring can also be caused by a lean fuel mixture or low KV output from the ignition coil.

  • @CharlieAtkins
    @CharlieAtkins 11 років тому

    Remove the 4-wire connector for the IAC. Attach a test light to battery ground. Start the engine, probe the four circuits while revving the engine up and down. The test light should blink on all four circuits. If it does, attach the test light to battery positive and recheck each circuit again. Once again the test light should blink on and off on all four circuits. If one or more circuits are not blinking, the wiring or the PCM is at fault.

    Put the gas peddle to the floor and start it. If it fires up (It will run like crap for a minute) it IS the IAC that needs to be replaced.The can seem to work fine for a few days or intermittent. It all depends on the temperature and how much you drive it.
    It doesn't matter if a vehicle is fuel injected it WILL start when you put your foot to the floor (It's a urban legend you will cause damage cause it's fuel injected)

    I have a mustang 93 with the 2.3L 4cyl, and I'm having a very similar problem. The idle is so low when I come to a complete stop it tends to completely stall out. The only trick to force the engine to stay on that I know of is to quickly pop it out of gear, and rev it in neutral while the car is stopped (red lights i.e.) and once it finally warms up it still rattles, with a low idle but the car doesn't stall out anymore. Also the battery power drops when I hit the lights, and sometimes stalls.

    I have a 1986 Cutlass Ciera with the 2.5 4 cylinder Iron Duke Engine. Last night it really gave me a hard time! "Service Engine Soon" light came on and every time I slowed down or took my foot off the gas, it would stall. Also, when I shift from park to drive, the idle goes right down and stalls. At red lights, the engine vibrates erratically. Some of these are also signs of IGNITION COIL failure, but the IAC is original, so it probably needs to be replaced a swell. Oxygen Sensor failure can also cause some of these symptoms I listed above.

    • @DJSkreebz

      I have an 83 firebird with crossfire injection. basically two throttle bodies. I hear they put the 4 cylinder iron duke throttle bodies on it :P I set my car to the correct ignition timing and it wants to stall and idle low. It was way advanced to compensate for this before hand. I wonder if the IAC is working? I need to figure out how to set minimum air and synchronize on both of these units.

    I think mines bad maybe something else but could this cause car to not start after driven for a while? Could it cause throttle body to erupt smoke out of nowhere? whait if spring is filthy looking? like gasoline is getting all in it? Car dies when changing to anything other than park and neutral. and sounds like your truck did but constantly going down more. Steering wheel kills car heat and a/c kills it. Radio doesnt but subwoofers do.

Haven't got to it yet but I'm told by a couple mechanics that my O2 sensor ( Oxygen sensor ) will do that. if 5.2 is same as 5.9, there's ( 2 ) O2 sensors, 1 in front and one in back of catalyst converter. Also told by 1 to take my convertor out and straight pipe it, and another one told me NOT to do it, truck will not run properly, will run too rich or too lean.

    I drive a 90celica that use the EFI. Mine would sometime stall when I make a turn but hardly it does that. Sometime when the car is fully warm and shut off the car and turn it back on, it would have a low RPM, below 500. Also the idle screw adjuster is all the way close to the right already. If I turn it to give more RPM, my rpm gauge would pass 1k rpm so I have to close the idle adjuster to stay below 800. I have replaced two IAC already. Still the same but use parts. Guess I need to buy it new

    Yea, if only George Bush had one tenth of the intelligence of this guy! Thanks for a great video. Don't forget to disconnect negative battery post for 30 minutes to reset ECM, then drive at least 40 mph to rest IAC. One symptom of bad IAC may be that when you are stopping your brake rotors will feel as if they are out of round, this is caused by the bad IAC pulsating at low rpm. Also, at idle speed your engine may feel as if a plug is misfiring.

  • @sparkymanitoba
    @sparkymanitoba 11 років тому

    Clean the throttle body with Throttle body cleaner and scrub it good with a brush. After you reassemble and start the motor it will run like garbage and want to sputter. Just feather the throttle to keep it running till it burns all the cleaner off.
    If you still have issues with idle, you either have a bad IAC or TPS (throttle position sensor). Any garage can quickly test the TPS for you.

    But it could be anything, possibly a vacuum leak..
    But every test comes closer to the solution. But yeah, my Sunfire does the same thing, its okay at cold idle, but once it warms up it gets sloppy, and then put it into gear ir under load it can't take it and boggs out.

    I have a 98 camaro and yesterday I noticed my car for the first time accelerated over and over while it was in park right after I put in gas. The car was on and in park going "Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom" and I was not pushing on the gas at all. Now today I woke up and went to start my car and it will crank over but won't start. Any idea what that could be?? No one can figure it out yet...

    Will it idle normally once the engine has warmed up? The idle in mine fluctuates alot in the morning but once it warms up it idles normally.

    My 86 Camaro with a 2.8L V6 idles rough when it is warmed up. runs mint when it's cold though. could that be the IAC valve on my throttle body? or something else?

    @Nachona2700 i just recently cleaned my iac and throttle body and i see an improvement but i still have the same problem to a lesser extend. i was hoping that it will clear the P0507 code (Idle air control system RPM higher than expected) but it didn't. so i'll be changing the IAC and hoping to find a cheap one online.

    This was happening a few months back. Two days ago is started again. Really crappy if this part was a defect and it failed on me within months. I wonder what other part mimics these symptoms

      There's no check engine light and no misfiring ... We think I might be a vac leak but were not sure. Someone told us the o2 sensors. Well find out soon enough we just bought a flowmaster super 44 system with headers

    I appreciate your attempt to explain/describe/show noobs [like I] how to do this. It may help if you change the description to the make and model you are working on as well. Thank you for your time :) Good video!

    I watch many of these videos, but none of them tell you that your suppose to disconnect battery while you change sensors right?

    Im here to help you and others and not to discredit, but your thining is wrong here on the functions. The IAC lo located on the bac of the throttle body has only one purpose and that is to cause higher engine RPM when the engine is started cold. It is the TPS throttle position sensor that raises your idle when AC is on which is located on the right side of the throttle body. The IAC is totally dormant after engine is warm and is simply an electronic choke. Here is in explaination the only function of your IAC, and you start engine cold and it revs and remains at about 1100 RPM for about 30 seconds and then drops down to about 700 RPM and after this function DOES NOTHING, and the TPS regulate the idle speed from when you turn your steering and run your AC and shift from neutral to a gear.

    Yours may be due to a weak distributor shaft magnet, this will cause backfiring, high, low, or unstable idle speed!

    The "vroom vroom vroom" while being idle is 100% an Idle Air Control System problem. more than likely the Valve. the not starting problem could be related or could be a number of things.
