I’m getting “soft” focus at the point of focus with auto focus. I think it may be alright manually focusing with peaking. I’ve been in touch with Service and I’m to send some sample images (DNG with metadata. It’s hard to account for the variables, like contrast detect. I’m trying to do a test in fairly bright light. I was going to do 2-3 pairs of autofocus and manual focus. After watching your video again, I may do a couple of zone focus. Question: I think I should do the autofocus first first (same subject and distance) otherwise the focus is already set if I’ve focused manually and turn autofocus off (keeping same distance, etc). If I don’t change anything else, it would be still be in “zone” focus. Correct? I’d appreciate your thoughts on how to check it out! Thanks Geoff
magnificent tutorial! Just what I was looking for. Thank you so much. I was reading the Leica TL2 manual but it's clear how AUTOFOCUS MODES work. Your video tutorial helped me tremendously. I appreciate sharing the knowledge :)
Being a contrast based AF, it's always on the hunt. Please keep in mind that it's based on a 10 years old technology. This said, it's a great tool and you might be able to find it for a fraction of the original price now
Hello, I am trying to expose for the light and lock the exposure using spot metering (using the back button assigned to AEL). When recomposing & adjusting manual focus the AEL is disabled instantly! Did you find this also?
@@LCM94120 I remember someone else had a different trouble after the install, and installed again from scratch and got it solved. It might or might not help, but I would give it a try if I were you. Keep me posted. Tom
when you select the focus mode "field", deselect the option for shutter release from the menu (move focus point only, not point+release). Once done, keep your finger on the box until you see arrows pointing outwards. That is the time to make it bigger/smaller with the thumb wheel. Hope it's clear enough with words. Thanks. Tom
Hi there, the full sensor is capable of 47 megapixel, which you will keep if (to shoot a close up) you move closer to your subject. If you move too close you can eventually switch to macro. Different thing would be if you use a crop mode: 35mm, 50mm and 75mm are available by just pushing a button. When you do so, you crop out of the full frame therefore the resolution is lower, 30MP, 15MP and 6.6MP respectively. How this clarifies your doubts. Tom
@@OneLensOnly ty for your reply. so if I am using the focus ring, I do not lose any megapixels? but if I specifically press the crop button, then I lose megapixels?
Correct. You would be focusing your 28mm prime lens at full resolution. You can find other videos of mine where I compare the 28mm to the 35mm or eventually to the 50mm. There’s more than enough resolution to get quality prints from your photos anyway.
Did you change the touch AF settings to "move only", not "move + release"? double check, just to be sure. Then you can try writing a note to Leica, it shouldn't be difficult to implement in the Q2M, too. I am expecting another sw update for next year before the launch of the Q3.
Just rented a Leica Q2 and found this really helpful getting to know Leica focusing modes. Thanks!
My pleasure! Thank you for the nice words
thanks. Very helpful. I’m having a problem focussing a Q2M.
What kind of problem if I may ask?

Does it happen with "spot" or what other AF mode?
@@OneLensOnly Good question. I don’t think so, but I’ll check. Can’t do it today, but I can tomorrow. Thanks. Geoff
Excellent. I had no idea how to use them for different situations.
Great to hear! Thanks

Glad it was helpful! Enjoy your TL2 :) Tom
Your videos should be included in the Leica Q2 package on the usb drive to explain the features :-) Thank you.
Thank you, I am glad you are enjoying the channel :) hopefully I’ll be able to share all my thoughts on the Q2 before they release the Q3! Tom
We are having problems… the focuspoint box no longer shows up on our camera… do you know how to fix this?
I am assuming you are in "field" focus mode? What if you switch to "spot", do you see the cross?
What’s the best one for taking videos? When filming noticed is out of focus a lot of times
When AF there's also a lot of lens breathing. Unless you are shooting head talks with face recognition, I'd go for manual focus for videos. Thanks :)

Is it normal when it’s on AF-C, the camera keep vibrating and buzzing?

hi, it shall not happen. What sw do you have installed? Updated to 4.0 already? Tom
@@OneLensOnly yes the latest

@@OneLensOnly You cannot re-install an existing version "update file is the same version as current firmware"

How did you adjust the focus square size?

does focusing reduce the megapixel? I know the lens is 47 megapixel but if you take a close up picture does that drop to 12 megapixel?

It does
with firmware update v2 for the q2m the field af has no option to change the size of the rectangle unfortunately :/

I thought all Leicas were manual focus only.
This is a mirrorless, but also have a look at the SL series
