My orthodontist put in an closed coil spring 1st month He gave me rubber bands 2nd month he told me coil springs are better for retraction and added closed coil spring on 11th I am going to tighten my braces 3rd appointment with tad.
Got my coil spring in today & right away I had to youtube its purpose because my ortho didn't explain it🤷🏻♀️ Anywhoo, my bottom braces, where the coil was put in due to a crooked tooth, is already so sore😭 P.S I've been watching your videos since I've had my braces on. Thank you for being so informative!

awesome video. I now have a good idea of what is in store for my future movements by looking at the brackets on my teeth. Thanks for such a clear and concise video
Am I the only adult here with braces? Got 3 teeth pulled 2 weeks ago and they added power chains all over, yesterday. I swear the pain is worse, compared to extractions. I can't even bite on a banana
MIn obade no you are not, I am on my 30s. I have two teeth missing and she said she was gonna try and close the space but she didn't give me these special wires so 🤷🏾♀️. Anyway so sorry to hear you are in pain. I used oragel and pain killers when I first got my braces. Oragel helped me a lot. Also I drunk a lot of smoothies. Heavy ones that are like complete meals.
nicky rosey I had my braces for almost 9 months before the power chains were introduced, I had overcrowding, overbite and misalignment. It's weird seeing my teeth so straight. The over crowding was fixed with extraction. These power chains are the most painful. But then again I didn't get prescription pain killers this time.
MIn obade ohhhhhh... My situation is opposite I have two many spaces, plus the over bite, cross bite and all that mess. Been six months for me. I haven't seen any real results yet besides my front gap closing a bit. You can take probably aleve liquigel those help too.

Loving the page Doc. You are making me take more interest in Orthodontics in my practice. A request; a video explaining Bracket placement. I would love to see your bracket placement protocol.
:') I have a large gap created from improper previous orthondontist treatment, and am now with a more compassionate, and honest office... What my past was never provided, my current orthondontist is. He used open coil springs in the main concerned areas (first premolars and canines). And I believe it's now in due to open space, but to deposit new bone growth, to thereafter help better close these spaces. They'd be applying my bottom braces in October, and starting rubber bands. Thankfully, I'm confiding & seeing how it pans out.
Came here after getting a close coil spring today and man, it hurts! It’s like I just got my braces again for the first time. But then again, it will all be worth it.
Mine started hurting recently, even though I've had them on for about 3 months now. I've been consistent with my rubber bands or elastics, and they're actively trying to shift but are held back with these likely open coil springs. 😅 I had an assistant in the office last tell me that they're likely just using an open coil spring as a passive/to hold it's gap there.
I have the same. I have a question through.. will the inside of my mouth ever get used to the rubbing of the open coil spring? I'm on day 3 with them and it hurts bad to open and close my mouth. Also I have the ceramic braces will my mouth ever get used to them lol I feel like I can't even talk right or like I have fake teeth that won't stay put haha
I had my first pre-molars extracted, and the gap is now being closed via closed springs. I know there are many factors at play, but do you know how much distance the springs close with every application? It's super cool to see Hooke's law in action.
Hi, may i know why u didnt consider implant on missing tooth? Just had a molar extracted, and i feel im missing something and that my treatment is useless bec the missing molar will make the rest of the teeth move especially it's upper counterpart.
@@qcrctgavarcesxrfab8015 maybe OP had to have teeth extracted because lack of space to fit the other teeth. It’s the most common reason why premolars are extracted.
Hi I wanna know that did the orthodontics inserted tads into your gum for the coil spring? I've seen many videos about tads with them and I'm hella scared
Where I work (worked, I don't know anymore) when placing the O.C. we added steel tie to the distal and mesial teeth to where we want to open space (active) and just regular O-ties to where we want to hold space (passive).

My hidden canine is being brought down to its original space and my orthodontist just recently used a type of spring to supposedly bring down the canine to its position, and the spring is hooked into one of my teeth in the lower jaw and into the canine itself, what about that type doc? I didn't had the chance to ask it myself to my doctor😅
I just got 4 coils in yesterday but i feel so sore today. I cant eat because to chew is so painful. Its been 7 months with today that i got my braces. Am so glad they gave me enough time to adjust to the braces before they added this. Otherwise i would be hospitalized 😂😂
I have two extra diagonal teeth that goes inside and my dentist wants to pull and align it straight. So, he had this idea of putting open coil spring to move some teeth to give way to my extra teeth to prevent extraction of my two front teeth. This is just a trial, if no movements happens in a month. He had no choice but to extract my two front teeth. But if it does work, no need for extraction. Idk if we're the same case.
Hello Dr. Greg. Wonderful video explaining the coils in an easiest possible way. I just got an open coil spring placed between the right lateral incisor and the first pre-molar, in order to create space to bring the canine forward. I would like to ask you that, within how much time does the space get created (on an average)? Also request you to show us in upcoming videos the types of archwires and also the types of brackets (not like metallic and ceramic), since not all the brackets on all the teeth look exactly same. Looking forward what next exciting topic you are going to introduce us to. Thank you. Keep up with the great work! Warm wishes to your channel.
Hi Tushkar! First of all, thank you so much for your kind words =] I really appreciate the support. I like that idea and have put it on my list for upcoming videos! So for the space, it can take several months for the space to open. There are a lot of variables such as : how much space is already there, how much space you need, how fast your individual teeth move. Keep me posted on how long it takes for you!
Hi! I've had my braces for almost 4 years now. I've been taking care of them since the beginning because at first I was only supposed to have them for 2 years. I have been flossing properly, I had a coil spring to close my gap, and I wear my class 2 rubber bands but I feel like my orthodontist is milking the clock with me. Do you have any advice that I can use for my next visit to find out when I should get them removed? My braces are already paid for and every time i ask they tell me 6-8 months.
Oh man, i'm so sorry to hear that. Really proud of you for keeping your teeth clean for 4 years! That's great. Maybe it would be a good idea to ask him what he thinks you could do to make them faster (if anything). Sometimes we just have to be careful with how quickly we close your teeth because 1] we dont want you to be in pain! && 2] we want to make sure we don't put too much forces on your teeth that can cause damage
[SG] Phyzixs Update: got them taken off because I had a really bad root canal & the dentist said he couldn’t reach it due to my braces. Going on a year now brace free!
I have some passive springs in my extraction gaps, and my god they can be great to fiddle with sometimes. I can just twiddle them on the wire with my tongue. Luckily they don't hurt because they aren't doing anything!
Great video! I have a closed coil spring to close a gap from an extraction. My orthodontist said it's not closing as quickly as she'd hope. Next Monday I'll get my TAD!!!
That's so great! My next video is on TADs too!! Im going to try and do my best to make that video this week as I"m out of town this upcoming weekend so hopefully I can make the TAD video by the time you have yours placed!
Maparaz Maplaz Hi, My upper right canine was impacted. I had surgery to remove it /c bone graft and they extracted my first premolar on my upper left side. It's a lot going on in my case lol but I was afraid on how it'll look with one canine, she told me the premolar look like a canine, she showed me other cases pictures before and after (similar to mine). I was satisfied with the work she has done, she came highly recommended. I suggest you do your research and if it'll make you more comfortable ask your orthodontist to show you pictures of their work.
Dr. Greg Asatrian Great 👍! Is it weird I'm excited to get the tad lol. My orthodontist said not a lot of people want the tad but hey if it moves the teeth faster I'm all for it!! Million dollar smile here I come😬😁... I'm looking forward to your next video and I appreciate what you are doing.. Thank you
(Someone please answer) i was eatin, something I probably shouldn't have, and the "coil spring" bent, along with the wire, and it really hurts. What should I do.
Could you do a video about mini screws ( TAD ) and how they work, your videos are very helpful. Are they permanent, does the patient have to be numb to palace them?
Hi Mariam- all excellent questions!! && yes! I have that in the pipeline pretty soon so make sure to sub & stay tuned! =] They aren't permanent (actually the T in TAD means temporary... Temporary Anchorage Devices) but yes you do need to be numb to place them but generally its just a super tiny area && your whole face won't feel numb =]
I had a passive coil at first because I had a baby tooth that they needed to preserve the space for an implant later. my lip got caught in it all the time and basically ripped little chunks out. it was annoying and hurt a lot. I got a new passive spring during my last wire change but it fits the gap much better. haven’t had any issues yet. I have a large gap from a missing molar so I might get an active spring at some point or maybe power chains (can’t afford two implants and I have an extra wisdom tooth on that side anyway).
I had a coil spring placed to make space for one crowded tooth. Yesterday I had it removed and and wire placed on bracket of the tooth that needed to come forward. Just overnight the tooth has moved so far forward but the teeth on each side have also moved closer together again. It now looks like this tooth will not fit in between the the two teeth where space was created. I'm sorry I am trying to explain this as best I can. Please advise what should be done now. Thanks
Hello doctor, My orthodontist applied two closed coil spring from my upper right and left lateral incisors to my 2nd molars. They slipped over the bracket and are now leaning against my gums. When I wore elastics I could easily adjust them, but I don’t know how to move the close spring back over the brackets. PLEASE ANSWER. THANK YOU!
Hey Doc, My ortho inserted mini screws after 3months. And he connected with rubber bands One month later he took off rubber bands and now he is using closed coil springs I have an overjet problem Which is better for retraction? Coil springs or elastics?
My lovely orthodontist just inserted a coil spring to make room for my highly anticipated canine impact; blockbuster debut tehehehe. It is going to be very tricky, because my canine impact abode in a challenging angle. Expecting the worse (canine extracted) and hoping for the best. I have promised myself I will donate £100 to a random charity if it all goes well - finger's crossed. Thanks Greg! Bless UP! >)
You learn something new every day. Though I have to ask, why do orthodontist tie the wire with metal ties? I have 4 in my mouth and cannot even bite down without pain
That's an excellent question! There are so many factors that go into extraction of teeth - I will make a video on it soon but just have to simplify it so still working on that! Best way to know if you need extractions is to go for an orthodontic consultation and they can explain to you a treatment plan!
I mean common sense ?? Sever crowding and lack of space. I have a tiny jaw and big teeth. So I preferred getting some useless out of line premolars out.
both my top canine teeth are impacted and they put a passive coil spring where it should be and it hurts a lot. theres a lot of space between the teeth so i can move the spring a lot, and so the end of the spring gets caught on the inside of my cheek and my lip whenever i make an open smile. i put some wav on it and pushed the spring into it for now, but im going this week to get it looked at.
My wire broke and I can’t see my dentist. Can I order one and replace it myself & my power chains? Any specifics I need to order? I have a gap from my molar is missing. I need to close it.
My doctor did put a closed coil spring on my teeth , But I feel like its not working properly . Can I know how long it usually takes a coil spring to show results ?? Thank you ,
Hello! Ive been watching your channel since February when I got my braces! I got open coil springs for my 5th adjustment yesterday, I got them on my lower front teeth due to crowding, in this case will I get power chains instead of closed coil springs in my case? Love your channel btw!
a spring was being used to make space between two of my teeth to make space for an extremely raised canine, and it suddenly just popped out and stretched over to the next bracket, what should i do?
sorry, I can't answer your question, since I don't have braces yet, im getting them next month, but I'm just wondering what kind of springs you are getting. I think I might need the passive one since they pulled out 2 of my teeth
I got a open coil put on late week and my orthodontist put the bands on two of them (the coils was place on my three bottom teeth) because one of the bands wouldnt stay on. My question is that one of the two bands that were put on the coils fell off and I was wondering if I need to go back to get a new one put on? Or would the coil work the same without one of the bands?
You’re so good at explaining these things
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

Hallo am from Indonesia, thanks for sharing information
Thank you so much for watching!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Absolutely Amazing explanation ❤️
I have some passive springs in my extraction gaps, and my god they can be great to fiddle with sometimes. I can just twiddle them on the wire with my tongue. Luckily they don't hurt because they aren't doing anything!
Great video! I have a closed coil spring to close a gap from an extraction. My orthodontist said it's not closing as quickly as she'd hope. Next Monday I'll get my TAD!!!
Veronica Chavez hi veronica, does your doctor extracted your lateral incisor for i have the same case. And im thinking to go for canine susbtitution
That's so great! My next video is on TADs too!! Im going to try and do my best to make that video this week as I"m out of town this upcoming weekend so hopefully I can make the TAD video by the time you have yours placed!

Hi,
My upper right canine was impacted.

Long story short upper left premolar was extracted..😬

Great 👍! Is it weird I'm excited to get the tad lol. My orthodontist said not a lot of people want the tad but hey if it moves the teeth faster I'm all for it!! Million dollar smile here I come😬😁... I'm looking forward to your next video and I appreciate what you are doing.. Thank you
Thanks so much for these videos very helpful
(Someone please answer) i was eatin, something I probably shouldn't have, and the "coil spring" bent, along with the wire, and it really hurts. What should I do.
Nice and informative.
Ooh nice, i getting my braces off in a week and I can't wait.
How awesome is that! You should make a video of it & share it on here =]
PS make sure to let me know if you do so that I can leave you a comment =D

Thank you for the explanation !
Don’t know what’s crazier me having spring right now or the fact that I have the same color😭
My vote goes to the same color!! =P
Same lol
Thank you so much sir... Your vedios are really helpful 🤗
THank you so much
I had the passive coil springs !
In the case of closed coil spring, since you can remove it, should you removed it if your eating or just let it stays in there?
Thanks for your explaining
That's good and better to use
Thanks

My orthodontist put in an open coil spring on my braces yesterday
Time to make/hold some spaceee
Hello doctor,
My orthodontist applied two closed coil spring from my upper right and left lateral incisors to my 2nd molars. They slipped over the bracket and are now leaning against my gums. When I wore elastics I could easily adjust them, but I don’t know how to move the close spring back over the brackets. PLEASE ANSWER. THANK YOU!
Hey Doc,
My ortho inserted mini screws after 3months. And he connected with rubber bands
One month later he took off rubber bands and now he is using closed coil springs
I have an overjet problem
Which is better for retraction?
Coil springs or elastics?
My lovely orthodontist just inserted a coil spring to make room for my highly anticipated canine impact; blockbuster debut tehehehe. It is going to be very tricky, because my canine impact abode in a challenging angle. Expecting the worse (canine extracted) and hoping for the best. I have promised myself I will donate £100 to a random charity if it all goes well - finger's crossed.
Thanks Greg! Bless UP! >)
Hi doc I'm just asking, how many brackets should be put on teeth?
Can a closed coil spring be used in place of rubber bands for an over-jet? Why? Why not?
My teeth are really crowded, do you think they will use open coil springs to make space? Thank you!
You learn something new every day. Though I have to ask, why do orthodontist tie the wire with metal ties? I have 4 in my mouth and cannot even bite down without pain
Oh no! I am going to do a video soon about the different types of ways we tie in wire (metal ties, o rings, self-ligating)!
Why do some need extractions for braces? How does one know if they will need extractions for braces?
That's an excellent question! There are so many factors that go into extraction of teeth - I will make a video on it soon but just have to simplify it so still working on that! Best way to know if you need extractions is to go for an orthodontic consultation and they can explain to you a treatment plan!
I mean common sense ?? Sever crowding and lack of space. I have a tiny jaw and big teeth. So I preferred getting some useless out of line premolars out.
Soy Saucey my orthodontist said I have to extract 4 of my teeth because I have protruded teeth.
how many 4 week appointments do i need to go to until the open coil spring is finished?
We can add more little shims to continue to make the open coil active
Hi Dr, the springs material are made from Aluminum or stainless steel? asking for a friend
both my top canine teeth are impacted and they put a passive coil spring where it should be and it hurts a lot. theres a lot of space between the teeth so i can move the spring a lot, and so the end of the spring gets caught on the inside of my cheek and my lip whenever i make an open smile. i put some wav on it and pushed the spring into it for now, but im going this week to get it looked at.
Thank you ,
Hi Dr Greg, the closed coil springs. What sizes do they come in? I’m an ortho student. I watch your videos a lot. Thanks 😊
Hello! Ive been watching your channel since February when I got my braces! I got open coil springs for my 5th adjustment yesterday, I got them on my lower front teeth due to crowding, in this case will I get power chains instead of closed coil springs in my case? Love your channel btw!
Great video only 3 mths into 2 1/2 yrs
a spring was being used to make space between two of my teeth to make space for an extremely raised canine, and it suddenly just popped out and stretched over to the next bracket, what should i do?
I just got a coil spring is long and it’s hurting my cheek bad I tried to put wax but it just keeps falling any recommendations? Thank you
How long does one have to put on the coil spring? Mine's almost two months and a half but no response from my dentist. Its an open coil spring
Is it normal for one of my teeth to get more crooked after putting an open coil?
Thank you for suggestion Dr
I just got braces and i’m getting a coil spring in 12 weeks. Will it hurt more?
sorry, I can't answer your question, since I don't have braces yet, im getting them next month, but I'm just wondering what kind of springs you are getting. I think I might need the passive one since they pulled out 2 of my teeth
Can u tell us about the side effect or bad effect if this springs?
I got a open coil put on late week and my orthodontist put the bands on two of them (the coils was place on my three bottom teeth) because one of the bands wouldnt stay on. My question is that one of the two bands that were put on the coils fell off and I was wondering if I need to go back to get a new one put on? Or would the coil work the same without one of the bands?
For how long the open coil should be weared? I got it yesterday for the front teeth. Thank for your reply!
