    In this extended video tutorial I'll explain you how you can skin any part you found around you with carbonfiber - carbon fiber (fibre).
    By skinning parts you will add carbonfiber on top of your original part. By doing so you will add weight, but you will also add stiffness to your part. You can compare skinning parts with carbonfiber with flattening parts before paint with bondo. You add layer after layer and sand inbetween to get a high gloss finish at the end. In this tutorial all materials used are from easy composites. You can find their website down below, as well as direct links to the products you will need. They also did a skinning tutorial you can find on following link: • How to cover parts in ...
    Step by step I'll go through the following in this video:
    - Chose your part
    - Sand and Clean your parts
    - Add a basecoat
    - Wrap or skin your part with dry carbonfiber
    - Vacuumbag
    - Add epoxy resin and sand
    - Clearcoat
    - Finish and final look

    Tip: using solidworks you can download .stl files of masks and so on and use "flatten" option to flatten the surface of the mask from 3D to 2D with the option of release cuts built-in to prevent warping. Print on paper for a template to cut the carbon fiber.

    To minimize bubbles... make sure you're putting on extremely thin layers at a time. Also use a hair dryer or heat gun with the resin is still wet to eliminate the bubbles.

      U WUT M8? No no no.. if you have a vacuum bag or using a mold and vacuum bag method, you only need to let the air bubbles drain out with the excess resin since that process is already air tight. Using a hair drier or heat gun to eliminate bubbles only applies if your doing brushing on layers of matting and resin.

    A personal recommendation for the masks is to get some clay, oil based preferably since water base dries quickly over time, and fill the insides of the mask. So once you start vacuuming the mask doesn't lose its form and you get a better result since it rests on the clay.

    If you are just going for the look just us g.p. Resin with a heavy clear gelcoat sprayed over it after sanding. Use wax solution thin with styrene and maybe a touch of speed patch. Wetsand 320 6-800 buff. It can be done in and hour or so from start to finish

    Have you try spraying aceton after you apply your laminating coat? It surely helps to flatten your resin surface so you don't have to make too much layer... Also no need to do several sand work, all you need is a single sand work before clear coating...
    Anyway, love the fail part, it helps a lot 🙏🙏🙏

    • @MatthieuLibeert
      @MatthieuLibeert  5 років тому

      True, tried it before but try to avoid it to prevent contamination... Rather use heat to remove air and flatten the surface

    When you are sending the surface after applying epoxy - use Scotch Bright! It will work way better with highs and lows.

    • @MatthieuLibeert
      @MatthieuLibeert  9 років тому +1

      I do follow you on this one, the problem is that it is to "flexible" with sanding paper you are removing the highs only so you are left with the lows...If you follow what I mean, when you then add resin again the high and lows will be totally flat to a high gloss :) with Scotch Bright you are just sanding "waves" less lows less highs... Not saying my way is the best, sure there are other ways, its just a way I feel safe with and know it will work out great for me :)

    • @DJKorzH
      @DJKorzH 9 років тому +1

      Matthieu Libeert Thats understood. I just mean that if you cant sand the lows - there may be some problems with the adhesive between the layers. May be i`m not right. Will try your way as well ;)

  • @mwatkins2464
    @mwatkins2464 7 років тому

    If you were to make a mold with the original mask it seems like it would cut out a lot of time. I've seen it done on other videos and the mold parts come out as perfect copies with no sanding needed plus using a mold you could gell coat it to add strength. Just a suggestion, I know there maybe other reasons you don't use molds.

      Lcct Designer Hey, Ik heb wat basalt liggen maar nog niet veel mee getest door de teleurstellende resultaten tot nu, maar zal er nog eens wat tijd voor vrij maken :)

    Hey! I was wondering if doing something like this (and adding a little extra padding) would make one of those good for paintball?? It seems like it would add a lot of strength and thickness to the mask and it might offer some protection.

    Some people don't need to use a vaccum bag but others, like you, do. When do you need to use a bag?

      like you say its a matter of personal preferences...i like to use it to get everything firmly against the part and have more detail

      Thank you. There are a few dings and dents near the top of my motorcycle aluminum gas tank. It is a flat surface with a few curves. I would like to apply a layer of carbon fiber over the surface to cover up these blemishes purely cosmetic reason, not structural. Is this feasible at all for a first time project or is it much more difficult than it seems?
