Elderly Homeless Man Worked All of His Life Just to End up on the Streets of Los Angeles

  • Robert worked all of his life. When he reached sixty-two, he had to retire on only partial Social Security. Robert received the full amount at sixty-five. He's now sixty-eight and living on the streets of Los Angeles homeless!
Robert says that on the fixed income he receives that he can either pay for food or pay rent, but there is never enough money to do both. Robert has tried to live in SRO (single room occupancy) hotels, but with rent at $500 a month, he didn't have enough left over and decided to make a go of it homeless. That was a little over three years ago!
We have a “Silver Tsunami” coming. The Baby Boomer generation is now entering into what should be their comfortable retirement years. Instead, because this last recession wiped out a lot more than hopes and dreams, seniors will enter into homelessness at an alarming rate. Los Angeles County is projected to become increasingly old in the very near future. By 2020, the county’s age-50-or-older population is expected to increase by 27 percent, and the population age 65 or older by 43 percent. Sadly, many will end up on the streets experiencing homelessness unless we take serious action now!

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Seeing this is why people make me angry when they act like it's just so easy to just kick poverty and just stop being homeless. This man lived his life and paid his dues to society only to end up this way. Unfair.

there is ZERO logic in the government taking your money and, if you are lucky, returning some of it when you are old!
it would have been better had they never taken the money in the first place.
Do not, I repeat, do not depend on social security as your retirement. Put at least 10% away every month in sound money (gold/silver).
I promise you that if you are under 50 social security will not exist by the time you retire.

If you saved and invested, lived within means, didn't marry future ex wife, etc. in the early days being fired close to retirement shouldn't be an issue.

Four your information, just because someone appears to be decent, doesn't mean that they are. I know a slew of these types that gravitate towards these jobs that should cater to the well being of those that have experienced whatever hardship or situation and they are the worst! For 1 they're definitely cut form the same cloth as you, they lack understanding, fairness, humility, professionalism and they're in no way decent!! Some of these people that have experienced homelessness are mentally gone. But your high horse mind, would never be able to see that because you actually believe that you are better than them and have the right to put them down as well as deny them of your care. Most of these programs are corrupt as well as employ individuals that purposely steal and take anything they can financially as materialistically from these programs. Often times these individuals feed off of others suffering because they believe their brains are bigger than everyone elses! If most of the shit that these so called professionals are doing were supervised by individuals that had scruples and sense, those that should occupy these facilities would be and they would also receive proper treatment and care for whatever issues they have vs a group of folk that purposely work the system to create false diagnosis and their supervisors and management support their fuckery because I'm sure they're doing something illegal and scandalous as well. But then again, programs as such can't work the system and if they are, it is because the system is allowing it. So to complain about something that is being allowed is a waste of time! Some of the so called directors are bitches and really don't want anyone that's in these programs that they govern to improve and or move on. They just want to keep them bound to the program so that the program can financially benefit from their monthly rent and whatever assistance they receive from the state for their so called community program. Ain't no good gonna come to none of these degenerates, as you can't sit on your high horse and believe whatever it Is you want to believe because you have a job and a title.

i can totally relate... im 63, at 46 i was injured in a bad wreck that left me disabled. the woman who caused the accident was driving without insurance which really screwed me over. ive been operated on 3 times since to attempt to correct some of the damage but yet im still left in mind numbing pain on a daily basis. sleep is near impossible..on a good day i might get 3 hours. ive been homeless 3 times and am currently living in a very run down shack with no running water, no gas n only a part of the electricity works. just this morning a large part of the ceiling collapsed due to the heavy rain we had. to clean myself i use baby wipes or go out in the rain on the few occasions we do get rain. i guess im better off than most because i do have some electricity n i do have a very leaky roof but its a roof none the less. i own a car but i havent been able to get it registered for the past 3 years because i just cant afford it. doesnt matter anyway, its on its last legs. the nearest grocery store is 21 miles away one way so i have no clue how ill be able to get food once the car finally gives out. to those like me, try n smile at least once a day, find something no matter how small that can lift your spirits. god, id kill just to have someone just to talk to. i go weeks without human contact. most months i see another soul maybe twice a month when i sneek into town to try n stock up on what little i can buy. social security disability doesnt pay much as we all know. god bless all n thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings

The only one that can strip you of dignity is you.
For 350 years we didn't have anything such as welfare. Since welfare started the poverty rate has gotten worse. Socialism begets dependence, it creates poverty. Teach people self sufficiency, independence, and accountability. One hundred years ago, several generations lived under one roof. The young took care of the old, and the old helped the young with childcare, chores. etc. Families lived together and took in boarders. Government programs destroyed the extended family. If you hate people and want to create more poverty and dysfunctional people just keep on heading toward more government programs. In Europe this guy would be living with his relatives. His $800 pension a month would be a big contribution to his family and more than enough to sustain him. We have million of immigrants that will do any job he could possibly do, cheaper, and better. So if you want to create more homeless - just bring in more immigrants. How stupid to you have to be to not see what is going on?
Guy was a mechanical engineer. Says there isn't much of that work around anymore. In 1989 I became homeless. the wife at the time cleaned out the bank account and ran off, she hadn't paid any bills in over a month and pocketed the money, but of course I didn't know that. I had a job but the storm of debt was more than I could endure. I lived in an abandoned house for roughly a month until I could recover, showers at a local gym after work. point being, this can happen to anyone and it happens very fast. imagine looking out the window of an abandoned house wondering what to do and the deck is stacked against you? this is how I became a loner depending on nobody else, I have never failed or screwed ME.

@Slomofogo You are missing the point. Where there is homelessness, it's a reflection of our society. Your argument about what caused him to be in his position is irrelevant because we can't change the past. All of us will hit hard times at one point or another and old age is guaranteed to be accompanied by hardships. Being able to send a man to the moon with our tax money but not feed or put a roof over our fellow man's head, especially our elderly or disabled, when he's in need is inexcusable. You're in denial and want to brush off responsibility so you can sleep at night. The rest of us with empathy rightfully feel shame because we know better that homelessness is nothing we can ignore and can be more effectively addressed. His problem is more our problem. We have to take a closer look at ourselves to find what more we can do to help what could be all of us one day.

I made the stupid mistake of selling my paid for mobile home so my pregnant daughter could get a better place when her fiancé left her. The same daughter who, by the way, is kicking me out after I’ve babysat my grandson up until he’s big enough to stay on his own. Now I’m pushing 60, have multiple health issues, can’t draw full benefits because I haven’t worked in the public for too many years. Can’t work because I use crutches on a knee that goes in and out, heart damage, more health issues than I can list. The slumlords would rather a building go vacant than stoop to accepting FAIR rent for what's offered. The USA has become a nightmare for the elderly, and the AOCs in politics would prefer we just be euthanized. She's one of MANY who blame "old people" for all the problems the planet faces. A mirror in their faces would reflect the REAL problem. Whereas the USA was once the greatest country on earth we don't fall in the top 90% now. What other country treats their elderly like we do? Food in the provinces is cheap. $200 could last a month if you cook. You can buy a used car for $3000 or a used scooter for $1000 in good running condition. Entertainment and fun in the provinces is also cheap. Sing Along bars in town don't charge entrance fees, just the price of beer and chips you buy and they are at cheap store prices unlike in the cities. You can swim in the sea or hike in the hills for free.

This is nothing to do with a 1% allocation of the budget given to foreign aid you hateful dullard take your poisonous kisses away.
This failure of government towards its own citizens is everything to do with keeping budget's low, through low taxation or no taxation or even positive taxation for business and the rich, and then allocating a small proportion of a small budget to well fare for vulnerable citizens like this fellow.

    • @MrThinkEncourager
      @MrThinkEncourager 6 років тому +3

I'm not comprehending. You think this is a problem via low taxation. Have you went and seen how much government workers can make in California? I seen in one place, you have to have a license to even work from your HOME! lol. Some companies may can get around the law, but not all of them. If someone makes more money, how is higher taxes suppose to help them buy more food? Money has to also come in to businesses, so when less money is coming into business (or terrible policy making), you should expect a layoff.
I'd suggest you read illinoispolicy.org of all the taxes being pushed and going up as well as regulations on businesses. Now people are moving away from the state and manufacturing businesses are going to other business friendly states. Bad policies can hurt the economy as well as being financially irresponsible. Sometimes illness or a life trauma can take an even on people as well which can result in hopelessness and just giving up. You'll never know unless you ask, but sometimes asking people who may know the person can give insight as well. I'd also suggest you view the youtube channel, The Dave Ramsey Show, to see the unwise decisions people can make with their money as well as how much debt people can be have. More debt means less money for people to spend (or save).

    • @MrRorySteel
      @MrRorySteel 6 років тому +13

Dee you are brainwashed by the main stream media, it happens.. the poor people with little money aint the problem its the rich people who hoard and dodge taxes, and governments enthralled to such people because money = power.

What are you talking about? So you sit beside me and know what I watch? lol. I was in a terrible accident and down in my health for years and barely watched the news, if any. Before that accident I stayed in a place with no television and a flip phone! lol. Still, I don't watch mainstream media as much as others. I'm usually on the computer. I guess you think I'm someone who would be promoting frying white people like bacon or getting mad cops for shooting that young guy who stole from a store?
Do you own a business? Big companies know how to maneuver around the law. There were some Republicans and Democrats under Obama pushed for the Internet Sales Tax. Also a black family member of mine who gets close to 50k and EICT credits think higher TAXES are okay and that blacks making 3-7/hr has something in common with him, lolol. Oh please, and he works for the public educational system and the schools are close to worthless.
You can't hoard what you don't have on an individual level. Please check Dave Ramsey of all the people with student loans and big car payments. Also check the POLICIES going on in California. I also came from a SINGLE PARENT HOME until my mom married. For me to get any financial aid she would have to NOT be married based on her and my dad's income.
You must be one of those people who want government involvement in everything and support irresponsibility which is where a lot of poverty is starting.
Oh and there are people making a nice chunk of change who lie to get welfare as well as cheat on their taxes. Been there and seen that!
How about you step back, get a clue, and then come back and let me know how the government gets PAID? Research medicare, medicare, and social security fraud.
Lastly, if someone is dodging taxes what makes you think you're going to get it by raising taxes (or even lowering them), ROFL!

Well the wealth is taken from the bottom and goes up from there. It isnt individuals who are at fault for instance being poor. It has more to do with the systems and structures in place. Even policies which politicians enact.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we all chose one homeless person to help get back on their feet. And then tell them to do the same once they’re up and stable again... to “Pay it Forward” for those of you who’ve seen the movie. If you haven’t I highly recommend it, super inspiring and motivational to help each other out. I pray that this kind elderly man is doing fine and can eventually get back on his feet.

A lot of older people I know still work. If a person's blessed, they have family or friends that pull their resources. Our govt needs to increase social security to a living way and stop using tax payer funds for crazy high govt pensions and benefits for illegal immigrants when there are so many older Americans we need to help

This is why young people need to start saving for their retirement when they're in their 20's. Alot of people where I work are planning to take their Social Security at age 62 and have nothing saved for retirement. I understand that everybody's situation is different and some people have to retire for medical reasons, but people today seem more concerned about having a $1000 smartphone or a high dollar new car instead of saving for retirement. I'm glad that I had encouragement over the last 30 years about saving for retirement and I'm really looking forward to that day.
