- Rodger is 83 years-old and lives in van near Seattle. He says it's not that bad. He doesn't have to pay rent, and that leaves him with enough money to get a good meal or go to a movie. Rodger says that if he was paying $700 or $800 a months rent, he would not have enough money leftover to pay his car insurance or to simply have any quality of life.
Rodger says he hasn't given much effort to getting off the streets, but when I asked him if he could afford an apartment would he get off the streets...Rodger responded he would.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

When the interviewer says "This is no way to live", it felt demeaning and the poor guy's face fell a little. No need to make the guy feel ashamed! Unless you can offer him housing, let him have his dignity- which he certainly does have. Such a lovely man.
I thought exactly the same thing.
i agree
He says it on every interview. The point isn't to demean.
Mitchell Parks That’s his opinion ( no way to live), this is an interview bout the old dude, not bout what dumbass, hurtful opinions the interviewer has, personally, if I was this intrepid soul, I would have told this asshole to #uck off-end of the interview.
Greg Flores how can this guy do these interviews and not offer a cent to him? Terrible! Praying for these homeless to get some kind of government help. Especially these vets who gave their lives for our country. 🙏 just like black lives matter, the homeless also matter. God bless this sweet man 🙏
A lovely human being... Seems like a gentle soul... Prayers and blessings to him...
I agree ,nicely put
M Prywatny Maybe actually DO something for him.
Ha you ever helped homeless , let me tell you something they are all nice etc its all an act , why the fuck you think they are all homeless ?
You can come to my house!

I can't but help to admire this man's attitude. He has a beautiful soul.
I'm a 58 year old man with tears down my cheeks. what a lovely human being god bless
so now you're sixty if you're alive n kicking
He's a darling man
The interviewer is tactless and would not swap places and survive. This man deserves better for putting his life on the line for his country. He is a very genuine,warm-hearted man and has riches gained through perseverance through a life that is not easy.
I salute him and my heart goes out to him.
That old gent is sharp as a tack! Wow he is a young 83!!
Just because you’re 83, doesn’t mean you have to be dull & brain dead. You can really live forever, it’s up to you or short comings if you let your brain die
He is ...yes
Yes he looks strong,it looks he wil live a long life.
In this terrible conditiins.
Why is he telling him," this is no way to live" he knows that! He has no other choice!
Scott Johnson Cuz the interviewer is a cold hearted S O B.
Interviewer is insensitive
Clearly, this is your first ever video. He says that to everyone. The interviewer has been homeless before and mentioned he fears becoming homeless, again. He helps some and just listens to others. This is one that he appears to be happy to listening.
I think "this is no way to live" in this context mean "I like you, you deserve better", "I like you, I wish you had more privacy and space, you deserve it"
However, one argument could be made that some people decide to be homeless or live in a van because they want to, so it's no one's business. That's seldom the case, though.
A lot of people truly choose to and enjoy living in vans,rv’s converted buses or whatever. They can travel all over and live comfortably and not have to work their life away. This gentleman on the other hand is probably too old to live this way. I wish him the best!
He has a young face for 83.
You have a young face as well
You can see he does not drink alcohol. Not a piss cat

Because he had a very good life, he also has all his teeth, I have a few left🤭
He's a lot safer if he's still living in his van now in 2020. The seniors' homes are death traps.
... and no freedom once folks live in these places.
Stuck until going to the cemetery
How do you know
Heidi Misfeldt why
Why are there homes death traps?
Just to be clear, I mean the senior care homes where the pandemic death rates are very high.
How embarrassing for America! This should not be happening that man fought for this country! Worked his whole life can't afford a warm safe home sad!
Amber Merancio Did you hear the part when he told us he had opportunities , he takes responsibility for his choices . Do you not believe him ? Do you not have any respect for him and his choices ? He's an adult .
They are spending tax money on illegal immigrants not American veterans
Don’t vote democrats
His problem is he is in Seattle. If he drove to the Midwest his income would be enough for what he wants. Seattle is freaking crazy expensive.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT?
Real Estate agents have sold houses for twice what they are worth, it's called GREED and no LAWS against it! I heard from a lady that in NYC they put a cap on rent over 60k live homeless in NYC alone. Homeless counts have doubled in the last 2 years in King county, love those Democrats who vote for these suckers and end up on the streets. People keep moving to Seattle even though they can't afford to buy any of the few houses for sale around here. Just stay where you are not even the people cleaning toilets in Seattle can afford to live in Seattle. This guy could move to other states where it's not as bad. There are places in Arizona that you can pay as little as $500 a year to park a trailer or camper on a property, they don't allow gas generators but they do allow solar panels for power. One is Indian owned land.
It’s now 2020. 6 years later after this interview. I hope that he’s doing well got his apartment and found a nice woman to spend the rest of his life with.
He's a neat guy. I hope he gets all his wishes and meets a nice lady too!

Talk about disposal of the people that fought for this country. First you fight for this country, and then you're forced to live in a van when you're gray and old. Great way to repay for patriotism.
Welcome to America!
C-los M Disposal implies this gentlemans situation is someone else's fault some how . He was very clear . More likely he disposed .
Oh please! This man can get into a Veterans home!
jacques dubois Really ? The stupidity continues and you certainly doing you part .
it just isn't right...We are disposable here in the great and PLASTIC disposable country US of freakin A!!!
A van keeps you out of the rain - The cold - The heat - The snow - It's a roof over your head - It's shelter - It's lockable to keep you safe inside and you're mobile - I don't consider you homeless - I consider you blessed and may the Lord watch over you
That's way he didn't bother to find apartment
This is just sad. Nobody *especially* in his age should be without a home.... My heart goes out to him.
Veteran too... it should be mandatory for this man to have enough resources to live comfortably
talk is cheap. send him some money or take him some money.
You have no idea what you're talking about. Maybe he likes his freedom. He was accosted by this prick of an interviewer that obviously made him feel uncomfortable so he wasn't as forthcoming. The interviewer should be dragged by horses until he grows up.
He has a home but lacks a fixed house. Like me. Van life is a wonderful way to live
I want to be like him when I´m 83. My first wish would have been "HEALTH"
In the USA I aged 3 years in 35 (being poor)...In Europe I age 30 years in 3. Or worse.👴🗓⏳
I'm 83 years old too! Lucky to have a 44 year old van to live in! Most people don't seem to live this long. Your health and clean living are most important! DO WE DESERVE TO LIVE THIS WAY?? I know it's easier said than done, but he could probably afford housing at a lower-cost-of-living area.
This guy is really neat and bright for 83.
Why isn’t anyone telling him that as a veteran he qualifies for a HUD VASH voucher? He can use that to pay for his housing. There has been a lot of federal money available for homeless vets for a long time now.
Big B they say it is available, but in reality most of the waiting lists are "closed". Or you have a 7 to 10 year wait for a chance at a voucher. Public housing is usually in really bad areas and the living conditions in most are deplorable. living in a van is safer and actually better than that.
In most states to qualify you have to have under 900.00 a month income
Hud Vash is a fucking joke
I signed up for HUD VASH and was approved plus had a voucher in my hand in 2 months ! It took me 3 days to find an approved apartment in which I moved into 3 weeks later. They have plenty of vouchers around the Baltimore area right now !!

He truly deserves more than where he is right now, in his life. I'm a Veteran too. I'm about to turn 72 in October and my heart goes out to him. The VA has nursing homes and hospitals but they have never reached out to each veteran, individually. There are still many military bases with plenty of land that the VA can use to house the needy veterans. Even "basic training" type buildings, where there are two or three people in a single room and share the showers and bathrooms down the hall, would make a big difference in the veteran's lives. They could also use the "chow hall" and other facilities on the bases. Instead, I see many homeless veterans begging for money on the local street corners. What a shame and what an injustice!
Jose Alberto they have been knocking down those old buildings and they are making new barracks. They are also building malls on larger bases to keep money circulating on base.
He should look into renting a room from a nice home. He needs a warm bed and if he gets sick-sleeping in a van is no way to live. Makes me sad---
He’s doing better than some. Bless him.
Ohh right its really hard to warm a van whatever warming an enclosed space like that a van is incredibly cheap to do
@@iamasmurf1122 and how would you do it without engine?!
What a lovely man .I pray he finds a companion and new home. He deserves the best.
I understand this completely. Some people much prefer living in their own space, even if that's only 150 cubic feet, to living with other people. Unfortunately "the system" of banks, home builders, county and city zoning departments, and tax assessors work very hard to keep home prices as high as possible and prevent people from living in cost-effective structures like Tuff Shed cabins. Truly this guy would be happy in a 300 sq. ft. cabin if he could live there for $200/month (utilities included.) The government won't let him. So now he's an urban boondocker.
It's better alone with privacy than share it with others. I hate sharing too.
christsminstrel this is so unfortunate!!, that government is responsible for alot of the homelessness! And it is all out of greed! And professing to be Christians!!!

A Veteran in this country should never have to live like that. He seemed like a fine decent man .
it's possible to lose almost everything (and sometimes everyone) in life, but in the end, those who hang on to their dignity, like this fine fellow- earn the respect and admiration of those who really understand their plight.
same age as my Dad who has "rescued" me financially and emotionally for decades. heartbreaking.
That guy is an inspiration. At 83 he seems more alive than a lot of people half his age. I hope he meets a nice lady.
Making a man tell you his story without making him feel like crap or look to the ground is a rare skill. This is painful to watch.
@Ralph Furley I'm sure he means well, I think he's been in a situation like this before. I can agree, maybe this has been a little rough around the edges, but it's more than most people do.
He never made him do anything buddy
He needs to get on a waiting list for a subsidized apt. It will take a year or so, but he will get in eventually.
Subsidized apartments are often crapholes and this man knows it.
I used to do home health nursing and visited many subsidized housing facilities. Some were better looking than others due to how they were built years ago but all that I saw were clean and very livable. At the time there was a 7 year waiting list for one.
Best thing to do is don't waste your youth or middle age years, work, save, invest while you are young and have the stamina. Prevent the problem rather than try to fix it when you are in your 60s. Working with the elderly scared me to pieces. I got two jobs right away and socked away as much as I could into savings and investments.
Many more honest people like him. Than me me others on the outside thinking their better than everyone else.
What a lovely balanced human being.
How did this gentleman keep so fit and healthy at that age and living in a van, most of my relatives died before reaching this age. he should write a book on his secrets to keeping healthy well into old age, he would probably earn a good income from sales. I would love to sit and chat to this guy whilst sharing a coffee. Greetings and best wishes from Australia.
dji zzah yes agree
I’d rather read about his life’s story
it is in his genes and he seems relaxed which is very important to stay healthy
Who in hell is the interviewer to tell this guy this is no way to live. "Its no way to interview.........................."
He often does that, but not to reprimand nobody. It is a compassionate way of agreeing that this is no way.
Apparently the interviewer once was in a similar situation, and managed to get out of it. He does a lot to bring these situations to light.
I judged the same way that you are- take a moment and watch the full documentary that he did- then post your comments!
Mark uses that line in many of his interviews. It's not meant to belittle or embarrass the person.... it's to show his empathy. If you know Mark's history you know where's he's been and what he's been through.... so when he says that.... he's sharing his experience and letting the person know that he understands the situation first hand!
Where I live this would be front page news, and someone in the government would be in serious trouble.. Sad to see a country not taking care of their elderly.

He is a kind heart. Lets all say a prayer for this kind man. He deserves it.
The rent should be lower so people can live but because people have to go and destroy peoples homes they make it difficult for others to live in low income housing.
I can see the heartbreak in this poor man's eyes. Its painful to see this guy struggle like this at his age
He seems so gentle and easy going. I hope he gets an affordable apartment. VA has homeless programs, he needs to look into them more.
2023 now. I’m assuming he’s gone now. Rest in Peace sweet man.
I was thinking the same. I’m really hoping he was able to get into senior veterans housing. There are a lot of programs now (my husband is a veteran and I am on various VA email newsletters that provide information on resources and benefits). I’m sorry that the interviewer didn’t connect him up with a VA advocate.
If we didn't have to pay rent every month, the world would be a more interesting place for better or worse. "a roof over your head is an option, home is where the heart is".
you can go to asia you can build home without paying, it's called squatting. The government will not kick you out if the land is not yet sold to private companies. And you can get away with tax in third world. They aren't strict with taxes so you can ignore the tax collector coz they don't drop by anyways. But the problem is bad income and too over populated and no jobs as well.
Many Blessings for him and all the needy❤️
Just because you don't understand that some choose to live in a van does not make it wrong.

Exactly, the interviewer tries to elicit drama and/or negativity. Many commenters have criticized the interviewer. I'll add myself to that list, I don't like his style.
@Splendid Mendax place your bet / spin the wheel
The interviewer talking down to him, telling Rodger, "this is no way to live", isn't he proving you're wrong? I love how others feel at liberty to tell people what is acceptable living and what is not. One of the great things about being free is the freedom to do this or that or to not do this or that. Keep your opinion to yourself unless somebody asks.
Please note subsidized apartments are years long waiting list. You have to have a phone and and address so they can reach you Or stay at the shelter which I have done.

Why do you have two homes? Greedy or what? There should be laws brought in to stop people owning more than one house to live in due to the chronic housing shortage these days and that's what's causing homelessness plus high unaffordable rents from scummy landlords that your average working man and woman cannot afford.
The housing standards are too high. People should be free to build a small house they can afford. Building codes and building permits are the greatest evil in the world.

He never showered complained about meals and our dogs ran my husband and son down constantly and finally moved out he’s been through 3 other friends and another daughter did and said the same things to them now he’s burnt his bridges after we all helped him financially he never saved 1 penny and gambled it all once he had the extra to do it!
"this is no way to live" ? What the hell kind of comment is that? Of course its no way to live. Look at the poor mans face after that comment. After watching video after video of the interviewers poorly timed, not very well thought out comments and questions I really wonder about this guys true intentions, or at least what the hell his deal is.
Sondagsmusic I agree. This is sick voyeurism at its worst. His tone is condescending and arrogant. I am guessing it makes him feel "superior" but I think he is a pathetic parasite.
beacuse it is NOT WAY TO LIVE!!! ITIS A SHAME FOR SOCIETY AND FOR ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY!!!
The people getting asked appreciate the question. It's a deep one with many avenues of conversation and people want to be heard. Having heard those words said to me it's sad but it's a bittersweet feeling. Hard to describe
As you CANNOT see, this guy is trying to spread awareness about homelessness
Fr. what the fuck is he supposed to say to that?
Rents have skyrocketed just as the price of homes have. I live in my van too. I visit my sister, and she lets me take a shower. I, too, am disabled and NEVER thought that I wouldn't be able to work or have my own home. I cannot afford to rent an apartment. I used to work in the escrow industry in CA. I made good money but when I was hurt at work, I lost almost everything. Workers comp is a racket and the government is no help there. In some cases, corporations can have government agencies target you.
