In Spain, homeless people are often referred to as "Ninis," which is a shortened form of the phrase "ni estudia, ni trabaja," meaning "neither studies nor works.”
Many of these people hold degrees, but they are unable to find employment due to the economic downturn that started with the Eurozone crisis and continues to the present day, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
They blend in with the general population, and from the outside, it may not be apparent that they are homeless.
This episode has been filmed in 2018.

Im from Spain, but grew up in the US, and ive been living in Spain for the past 9 years. I have a bachelors degree and an IT degree, and i havent even had an interview the entire time i've been here, i applied to thousands of jobs and my relatives are shocked when i tell them that. Nepotism is also very prevalent here too so it doesnt help qualified people to find a job either since a lot of times unqualified people are filling jobs and leaving qualified people out of the workforce, or seeking employment in other countries. With that said, i am heavily persued for employment in the US and accepted a 6 figure job, im leaving in a few weeks. Spain is losing talent, talent that can improve Spain become a more powerful country. They have so many issues i dont see Spain improving at all in the next several decades. Its a good country for people who are retired, but not for ambitious and highly talented people.
Similar situation for me, and I agree with a lot of what you say! I was lucky enough to work a good job (for an American company) in Madrid, but compared to the US the salary was bread crumbs. I'm back in the US now and the labor market is another world.
If you can't find a job with your degree that means that you aren't qualified enough for the market, or your skills are just too commonplace. It's very simple maths: a job market has a limited capacity to absorb graduates. For instance, if an area needs 100 engineers, but the job market offers 150, then that means that in the end 50 engineering graduates will end up jobless no matter how qualified, competent, hard-working... they are! This is pure simple maths!
So learn something else that will give you a serious edge, or just pursue a different career and move into a different sector., or move elsewhere, where your skills are needed and valued more..
Our son lived in Madrid for a while; we are glad he came back to Holland and look for a job here in the IT. When visiting Madrid I noticed their English is very basic.
Sadly that nepotism is still a feature in the government of old Spanish colonies

I'm one of them. I have a bachelor of pharmacy degree PLUS a master's degree PLUS a PhD, but still unemployed to this day.

Degrees always gave me a bad vibration.
Remember post war people had no qualifications, just walked into a job and started learning.
Nowadays, you need university level, a good resume, some related job experience, then you go through extensive recruitment processes including a written test, a verbal test, personal behaviour test, an interview, and a second interview in some cases just to get a minimum wage job.
I'm seeing job postings open for months because, going by the description, they're looking for a unicorn. And pay terrible money.

For a minimum wage job many people apply. A high number are all suitable. Sometimes about 500 apply for each vacancy. 499 disappointed. Much effort goes into applying. Disheartening when you don't get jobs like that when even over qualified but need any job to survive. Many attempts depressing for a lot of people.
I have some friends who graduated from Oxford and Cambridge. Many just have ordinary jobs and they earned as similar as college graduates. So no need to spend EUR60,000 tuition fee each year, studies happily at your own countries/mid level university are okay.

Ninis is a term NOT used to refer to the homeless. It is a term used to describe young people up to their 30s that do not study or work nor they wish to get a job

Having a degree does not entitle you to work. And having a degree should not be your escapism to elevate your ego and look down upon labor work.
So sorry for those whom study hard with a degree but losing job. I always respect people with a degree and also those who are hard working without a degree.
Having a degree / PHD / Master does not mean you nderstand about money. Yes you may be able to read 10 books a day but of you cannot adapt to situations and look down on basic work because you have a gold stickers on those certificates employers wont take you on. A lot of these people believes that because they have a A++ on a piece of paper they believe that basic work are too good for them. A lot of them also dont like taking risk as taking risks are not the answer on their dissertation papers therefore they like the safe path. The world are mot like that now. Lastly, we need more farmers not doctors scientists and lawyers. But these people want does not want to get their hand dirty because it is not on their 10 books a day.

your comment doesnt make sense. Having a paper with gold patern around it that says you have A in PHD in a subject doesnt mean you are smarter than someone who been in many low level jobs. It only means that your are succesful in that 1 subject alone. It doesnt mean that you will be able to cope with other employments such as sales. If i was recruiting for a sales job and i look at 2 CVs one candidate who have a master degree in elctrical engineering and 1 who is a college drop out but works in a supermarket stacking shelves, i would hire the candidate who works in supermarket because they want to learn, they know how to deal with people not just books...@@janerob1009

I have a college degree- I have a job but here in America I can't afford to pay the rent. The average rent in Boston Massachusetts in Oct 2023 is $2,300 usd for a 1 bedroom apartment.
This is going to give you an apartment in an older home or building. In a middle to lower class neighborhood.. possibly a bit run down with no utilities included. - if you are purchasing oil heat this winter- you will pay between $900- $1,200 a month to stay warm for 1 month- it's expected to go up this winter. Depending on what town you live in and if you are not sharing that one bedroom with anybody else you can expect to pay $300 -$500 usd a month for electricity -and that's if you are very careful with shutting lights off. This too is expected to increase drastically this winter. If you own a car that is going to be a big expense here in Massachusetts. Gas for your car in Massachusetts October 2023 is going to cost you between $4.00 and $6.00 a gallon. To fill your tank up with a regular small sedan will cost between $60 and $90 for a full tank of gas.
I do live in my car and my insurance is $300 a month and my car is a 2006 Volvo with very high mileage. I haven't even discussed food yet.
One gallon of milk is between $3.69 and $5 a gallon. It's probably more than that I haven't had milk in 3 years. I can't afford meat either- a small steak could run you about $20 and that's for not a very great cut .
I eat a lot of fresh vegetables because I'm trying to stay healthy -I pay $600 a month for my health insurance.
If you are a low skill worker and making minimum wage in Massachusetts you will be paid $15.00 an hour -taxes on that hourly wage are typically 24% on every dollar. -. Massachusetts residents spend a straight 5% tax on every dollar for everything except groceries.
A pack of Marlboro cigarettes are $13.00.
When you file for your income tax at the end of the year they automatically take 5% again from you. If you were paying your federal and state taxes together it goes up to 7% per dollar. If you do not own your own home and you are a renter you can expect to pay an additional $6.25 per hundred on top of what you are paying for your rent. When I used to own a home in a middle-class neighborhood- my home was worth $250,000 but my taxes was $7,000 a year -just for owning a home. Your housing taxes go up every year whether you own or rent. You can own your own home and it could be completely paid off but you were still going to be losing yearly taxes. I have a college education my paycheck varies because I'm self-employed I am paid between 25 and $35 an hour for what I do but after taxes and all the other expenses I still cannot afford to pay for a one-bedroom apartment and have anything left over.

I find it criminal that people get charged between 25%-31% on every dollar they use when making a purchase with a credit card. That's about $0.25:on every dollar.

This is happening in other places ! People are becoming homeless for various different reasons, affordable housing shortage in Canada! Rental Rates have doubled in some cases, there are alot of Renovictions, it is a crisis ! It is striking people of all ages. Nobody should be homeless or hungry ! 😔
I’m very shocked at the number of homeless I’m now seeing here in Paris France. where I live.These are normal looking people of French origin,including a lot of women,some even have regular jobs.This is something we never used to see before,in the old days only drunks,drug addicts or foreign refugees were out on the streets.Very sad and scary.

True; here in Madrid you see a lot of homeless people begging in the Metro and certain parts of the city, way more than when I was young. These are both Spanish people and immigrants out of a job. I think that the ABSURD price increase of renting a flat or even a room in these like 20 decades is mostly to blame for it. Don't even start me on buying a house.

Degrees are often totally meaningless and useless nowadays. Learn a trade instead, and you'll never be homeless, you'll make some decent money, can create your own business and be your boss.

@@cyrilm6960 You don't need to get in massive debt to learn a trade, unlike a college degree...The cost of trade school education is MUCH cheaper than college.
After getting your certification you most probably will need to work for a boss for a couple of years, or more, in order to refine your skills, to fully familiarize yourself with the job, to build confidence in your own capabilities...then when you feel you are ready you can create your own business, or not! Some people aren't made for entrepreneurship, and that's fine! You can still make decent money, and lead a happy life working for a boss.
Also, you don't need huge money to start a carpenter, electrician, plumber, landscaping....business. There are tons of options to get the essential basic tools on a budget...plus the return on investment can be quite fast...

I have 2 engineering degree, but i now do food deliveries. The problem is that I have too much education and a white name.
This is not a problem that is unique to Spain.
Too much emphasis on education to produce university students and not many people learning traditional trades.
If you want to earn a real living, don't study to become a doctor, learn to be a plumber, electrician or Joiner.

Our school system exists to produce university students. Which means the value of university degrees is diminished. There are too many people going for the "top jobs". For example, I have a friends who have masters degrees, but are working as bar tenders and in call centres, some are unemployed and take the decision to continue in education. The reason, when they apply for the jobs they want 500+ people are applying for the same job.
On the other hand, I have friends who left school at 16 and got an apprenticeship in a traditional trade, joiner, plumber, electrician. Those friends are now running their own business, making a fortune, absolutely inondated with work because the demand is so high due to the lack of people skilled in those trades. They are also struggling to employ people in order to help them further expand their business.
Of course we need Dr's etc, but the value in having a trade is being over looked and that is a detriment to society and the overall economy.

It's no surprise that the birth-rate is below replacement level, and that the state pension system will probably become unsustainable. Then there's all the money printing that has been going on for years now, creating a level of government debt that is likely to be damaging for our economic prospects for years to come. Finally, many young people would be better off becoming a qualified tradesperson, learning on the job and being paid for doing so, rather than attending university and racking up a considerable amount of debt with no guarantee that they will get a job in their chosen field, with a few notable exceptions, such as STEM related fields, law, and accountancy. I am referring to the basket case that is the UK.

(there are many pantries and shelters that give you great meals, clothes, and toiletries). The city gives you a phone for free with free internet & phone service & a WiFi tablet. I'm not kidding. All theigrants have them plus they give you a little cash assistance monthly. They will give you a place to sleep and there are lots of jobs you could get here. Lots of migrants are working doing like Uber Eats and GrubHub food delivery & many don't speak English like you do. Many restaurant s need employees too. I think you might have a stalker. I do too. I had to live in a shelter because of them. I still am fighting against these gangstalkers but God blessed me with a great apartment. You'll be ok. If you can get to NYC, come asap. Be positive. It's amazing how many American UA-camrs who praise life in Portugal and Spain as having quality of life. I'm not rich ,so I wouldn't dare move to either one of these countries. I've lived in both countries. I'm too old to be looking for the struggle.

I am one of these youtubers. Life as a digital nomad in Portugal is great. If you make more than 3.500 euros/month, your money comes from overseas and you can legally avoid the high taxes, then yes... these places are incredible. However, if you live like a local, earning an average salary then life can be really tough... these two realities coexist.

That's because the dollar goes further there than in America. The sad thing is that it makes housing unaffordable for the natives currently in the country.
The amount of money you need to maintain the same standard of living is significantly different between Spain and the US.
People should understand that jobs involving art, literature, archaeology, etc, are best reserved for rich or at least supportive families children, because only them can take the time to slowly build a career without the need of immediate money.
And another thing = I was assistant teach at a college and the students said something along the line "you accepted us into this school, now you got to find us a job on our way out".
Those kids are right to be fair. Because the schools will accept the money to teach them but not to help find a career.

But isn't it kind of messed up that you need to be from a privileged family not to become a CEO or go to the Moon, but to simply learn art from professionals one time in your life? What should one think in that case? That one is an unworthy peasant? There is some sort of dignity in becoming another Norwid, even if the bread is bitter. Now, if you want to, say, get a piece of goat's cheese and a bottle of wine from your neighbor, you need to have something he wants from you that you can trade. If art is recognized as profound, it can be financed by the government. And in fact, it kind of is, in Europe. Sounds reasonable? It's one thing to say to a guy or a girl that you'll earn less when you go here, but to tell them that they can't go there altogether is kind of wrong and sad.

The woman sitting and begging for alms appears to be Romanian. There are many foreign organizations here that engage in this, even using children and pregnant women. At the end of the day, they raise more money than any of us working. In fact, they look well-groomed, well-fed, and clean, etc. In Tenerife ( Canary Islands- Spain ), we have a quite serious issue with homeless people, especially because they come from other countries where it's more challenging for them to make a living by begging, performing as street artists, or asking for leftover food in supermarkets.
Homelessness is another serious issue, but mainly due to uncontrolled immigration. Some order needs to be established; opening borders recklessly leads to these kinds of consequences that force the native population to emigrate to other countries because they are not valued in our own or because life becomes unpleasant amidst so many different cultures that do not respect your own or the country they have immigrated to. It's a situation that will undoubtedly worsen!
A small rectification, she CAN be from Romania, but she is Romani (not Romanian, as she can as well be from Bulgaria, Albania etc), they are gypsies and begging/stealing/ is a well organized business. It doesn't have anything to do with "real" poverty

Yup! I’ve even seen a few Romanians with small children begging in the subway. Unfortunately child protective services is super active here and I’m sure the child I saw was soon thereafter put into care 😢

The word ni-ni is not often used for homeless people in Spain but rather to define spoiled young people who doesn't want neither work nor study and live with their parents
In Mexico 🇲🇽 a NINI is a young person who doesn’t want to study nor working … usually lives with parents , not interested on doing anything with their lives

My advice: stop studying and learn a trade, like plumber, builder or electrician, and you'll find a job. The problem is that there are too many university graduates for the number of jobs.

These are good, but if trying to be self employed, prepare to battle to get paid. My father, a very good mechanic, couldn't stay in business because of people not paying him and had to go get a job working on trucks. Big businesses can afford lawyers to push the issue.

So different from the economy here in Scottsdale, Arizona🌵. We are the fastest growing part of the USA. Cost of housing is unattainable for most starting careers - average homes are half a million at least.
I am Spanish and I am not saying that there are not some cases with university studies who live on the street, but it is an exception. It is true that many Spanish higher education graduates hold jobs well below their academic level, but this is due to imbalances between the university and the labor market. Today, vocational training is being promoted; upon finishing high school, instead of going to university, a two-year theoretical technical training is offered, with studies without unemployment and with higher salaries than those that sometimes, at least at the beginning, It is offered to university graduates. The homeless problem in Spain is more linked, as far as Spaniards are concerned, to mental problems and drug addiction than to economic problems. One of the big problems of social assistance is that the homeless do not accept to live in shelters and residences. The problem of homelessness among irregular immigrants is also emerging.
Schools should start teaching "Self employment". Every student should learn at least one skill at school to fall back on when the job is delayed or doesn't come at all. Entrepreneurship is the way to go because technology is doing things better and faster, so the jobs will keep getting fewer and fewer. Reality..
Self employment in Spain is horrible... you pay more than 300€/month even if you sell your profucts/services or not... if you stay some months without selling you loose hundreds of euros...
Schools are designed for employment, never for entrepreneurship. After spending several years for a degree and still jobless, it's not a degree holder's fault, it's the government's loss, because jobless are less productive and results to have less participation in economic activities, seek the red pill and your eyes will be open to the matrix of bullshits around you.

Even if schools taught relevant courses with high probability job prospects and the economy is stagnant the situation may not be different. Also self employment/entrepreneurship is easier said than done.

The title is inaccurate (clickbait.) José is a formerly homeless person who is now a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D., presumably in linguistics.
If José plays his cards right, his Ph.D is in a high-demand field such as computational linguistics-so when he’s finally done, he’ll never be homeless again.

This is quite an eye opener. I grew up in the US, 4 of my cousins are Spanish, 1 moved to Sweden, another to Holland and 2 have stayed and found work in Barcelona. We all have degrees, but their lives seemed much more relaxed than mine, to the point I was thinking about moving there.
People usually only move when they found a comfortable place to move into and they are already established enough to make that decision, so it's a risky proposition to assumed that their experience will translate easily to other newcomers.
@@holmiumh agreed, that's what I was planning to do. I was just very intrigued by my cousin's experiece. When he had children, he quit his engineering job to open a newspaper stand in front of his apartment, that gave him enough to support his family and rent. He lived 2 blocks away from a main tourist attraction and paid a little more than €700. While I worked long hours, rented an apartment without any particular attraction near it, or in it, and paid close to $3000.

It’s not only Spain. Here in Vanuatu, many degree and post graduate are still jobless. It’s hard to find a job that match your degree thus many just get any job in order to pay for their bills. Because most offices hire people who have no degree but more experience than those who graduated.

That’s why I enrolled in Business school only to learn what I need and then dropped after a year to focus on starting my own business, which is not easy btw. In Spain (and many other countries) people believe that a degree will secure you a job, and that a job will secure good pay, that’s why Spain is a nation of employees unlike the United States for example where you have more examples of entrepreneurs. I live in Spain, I don't have a PhD and I find jobs easily. I studied Civil Engineering, there are no jobs for that so I'm working in a different sector. Just refused a promotion and changed to a new management job with a higher pay. Most people in Spain think they are entitled to a job for something they studied that the society doesn't need. Or because they don't have the experience to tell what's important and what's not and they blame it on everyone but themselves. Many many people in Spain are like that. They are just obsessed with how important they are and how important what they studied is and lose track of reality.

Well this is why I migrated from Spain together with my five languages and my degree in agriculture, and now taking a language teaching course in order to become a teacher of Spanish language. Being an expat is a real perk regarding this profession. But really, this world has become so "hopelessly hopeless". I'd just love to be able to move to a small village in the Alps so that no one would ever hear about me. But I may as well become a buddhist monk due to my many ties with this community.
What do you expect to receive from 5 languages and a degree in agriculture other than personal satisfaction? The degree in agriculture is far more valuable and useful than teaching Spanish as a foreign language. You sound like you're on a journey into the dark with no destination. However, if you're young, there's hope. You could buy yourself a house in Italy for a Euro and work on improving it just like a Buddhist monk. however, they don't live in isolation. they're a community. Besides, if you want to disappear in the alps so nobody ever knows about you, go the way of the Ötziman. Walk over the mountains in ice and snow and be discovered 3000+ years later. All the best.

It weakens the central government, and when the houses are abandoned they're not reclaimed by the government and cost money to clean up which they don't end up doing most of the time. Peru builds illegal houses and the country runs like trash.

That was my thought exactly. She looks Romanian and I say that because I've seen gangs of these Romanian women in London who come here specifically to go on shoplifting sprees or begging. They get on the tube trains to try to embarrass people into giving them money (usually unsuccessfully) but I believe they're not in fact poor. This is how they make their living. There was a television programme about shoplifting and some Romanian women went wearing long skirts with huge pockets on the inside of them to put the shoplifting items in. They're utterly shameless.
PhD is more status. You don’t need to spend so much time on education (maybe a basic degree would do) unless you don’t want what you want in life OR you really to be in the field of research
I have 3 different degrees related in the same profesional carear, but I'm 67 and I know I don't going to find job in my field, but I work as Chef in a great restaurant and I make my living, stable and good, then, some times is because a Lawyer or scientist don't to want to work as a bartender, or as waitress, if buy any reason may be, you are in bad economical situation LOOK TO WORK IN ANYTHING THAT YOU MAY BE GOOD, you like to bake, go to a bakery and ask, I,M A UNIVERSITY TEACHER BUT I WOULD LIKE TO APPLY AS DISHWASHER BECAUSE I NEED TO PAID MY RENT AND FOOD, and I'm pretty sure that you will find a job. Degrees without job can mean two thing low economic growth or bad educational plan.Germany for example direct students to the fields that have opening in them so when they get out of school they can directly find a job. In Turkey for example this is nonexistent and wage gap between gaps is too much so people tend to overeducate themselves so despite having lots of openings in some sectors there are tons of youth unemployment. The thing is some of the sectors are insanely good paying which is why directing students and vocational schools are important
Yes, Germany has a good government "directed" education/training policy similar to Singapore. The bureaucrats in Singapore do a good job of "matching" current and future labor demand across the board. They get the universities to offer degrees or at least have classes targeting these fields. And they will bring in very well qualifield professors from abroad to teach these classes. Of course there is no guarantee of a life time employment in these fields because a lot can and will change. The universities and secondary schools often have information sessions for the students and parents to help them make the best choices.

In Spain, many job positions still function via "enchufes". Qualifications are of little relevance, unless it's a public administration job, for which there are often thousands competing for a handful of jobs in each area.
Unfortunately, the “enchufes” happen everywhere. My neighbor’s kid, a very bright young man who graduated a couple of years ago from a prestigious university in the US ended up working in his father’s company after applying for months for other jobs with no luck. I’ve heard plenty of times that American kids go to good schools to network, not to actually learn!

I've worked in different fields of the electrical and electronics industry, so I understand your point. However, I also recognise that I was one of a small minority from my school who went on to achieve that.
Interestingly, those from my old school, an even smaller majority, who went on to be financially successful, were not necessarily academic in any way. However, they had single-minded focus on what they wanted to do in life. So maybe this aspect, the focus of intent, may well be more important than having marketable skill sets.

These OVER-EDUCATED homeless people in SPAIN could EASILY work in the Agriculture/FARMING business in Spain: The farms in Spain have OPEN-ARMS in hiring people. At the very minimum, when you are located at a farm -- then you can have plenty of access towards FOOD. Meaning: NO ONE gets hungry when living on the farm, when you can GROW your own foods. Plus, these days, there are many ONLINE-JOBS that people can do via the Internet: Spaniards in Spain can easily make money from clients who are located outside SPAIN, for example.
YES, life at the farm can potentially be HARSH / DIFFICULT; however, you can still EAT something (instead of asking for FREE HANDOUTS from others, or just be BEGGARS).
As mentioned before: Many of these over-educated people can still TEACH ONLINE, or do WORK online (remote work type of jobs via the Internet).
Another option is to WORK OVERSEAS by selling your skills and talents to those willing to pay for your services.
Problem is expectations. When you were rised and educated to work in a well paid modern job then is hard to accept a job in agriculture. The problem is the free market economy.

I do not think is that easy, because these businesses look for particular people to staff their jobs, people that they can use as they need with no law applied, I did work on a farm in Spain (Girona) when young, they do not feed you, you work all the hours at once and you have a break where do you eat what you cooked at home, even the toilet time was controled

The biggest problem that this guy has is his degrees. An education is only a mean, not an end in itself. What you do after your formal education depends on your determination, work ethics, and characters. The country my wife comes from they have 1 big problem. It's status to have university degrees. So start when everybody goes to university and ending up with 2 to 3 degrees. This mean the whole country are flooded with over educated people who used up a lot of time studying and most likely will end up working as a receptionist or secretary. And because of this the salary system are messed up to because it's based on how many educations you have.
