Seeing the careful thought and design of the interior space makes me itch for a Connie gold standard rework of basically the entire front interior crew area of the Connie. The Connie was the first ship I got really excited about way back when it was announced, and I love the look of the Connie, but these new ships really show how much cig has learned about ship design

I have a whole three on spectrum about fixing the Connie. If they did a redesign of the Aquelia to put in an upper deck (like the Phoenix, but an exploration design rather than a luxury passenger design) it would be second only to the cattack

Are you serious? The 400i interior sucks, try flying it! Wasted space throughout, hardly fits any vehicles inside, basically worse than a Connie or MSR in most ways. It's beautiful outside, but of questionable value

i really hope the phoenix gets slightly reworked, the back end of the ship is too "in your face" for me, its a poor mans sports car in other words. and i hope the 600i get a bit of a touch up. overall, i think Origin ships are sexy af, but the layouts arnt really functional, always weird places for things to go, corridors that show too much back end ect ect, its like walking behind a bar to get to another point of the dancefloor.

I got this because I wanted a ship that feels more home-like. I've just been enjoying taking it to random places and opening loot boxes then storing it on the ship. for those purposes its great, it has a nice interior for long QT times and a really good fuel economy when in atmo. IMO the constellation and cutlass heck even the msr all have interiors that I always just ran past because they were so practical, ship interiors is a big deal in this patch because of the inventory and I feel like I can RP the star fleet captain on a budget with this ship lol

Personally I see this ship becoming an excellent drug smuggling vessel. It's fast, meant for running away with the back facing turrets. The smaller cargo bay is actually useful for moving drugs because you can't buy huge bulk anyway. Maybe I'm just looking through rose tented glasses but this ship seems almost too perfect for the aspiring smuggler like myself.

I just bought this ship. It’s the first real ship purchase I made since starting in may 2021. I kinda wanted a ship that was a bit more of an Aurora in my hanger. A good starting ship for when we get further wipes. A good ship that will let me make money but yet allows me to grow by getting better ships later. A good ship that is an all rounder and yet still let’s me play solo as well as multiplayer. A good ship that lets me taxi people in style and appeals to my aesthetics. The 400i covers all this. To me this feels like what the MSR *should* have been. It's size is appropriate for a crew of 1-3, it's not over-engineered (*cough* smuggletunnels *cough*), and having the bike bay not take up cargo space is good, and it fits nicely into that "can outrun what it can't outgun" design space where the lack of firepower compared to the Connie isn't a dealbreaker. It just FEELS more "Millennium Falcon" than either the Constellation or the MSR, and I could see it being a good bounty hunting vessel.

I look at the 400i as the ultimate solo ship, with plenty of storage, just blade the rear turrets for point defence and put fixed S4s on the nose, it has 32 missiles in the wings. Use it for smuggling, NPC bounty hunting and hopefully ROC mining, once CIG fixes the rear landing struts to make them longer so a ROC will fit. It will work great for mining, since it has a exploration scanner and mapping table. I like that it has long range because you will need it when Pyro is in the verse.

From that view, its better than a Connie especially the bike bay. Fighting power wise, I still think S5 hard points for the pilot would be better but it is not required. I would also argue a second M size computer could go a long way on an exploration ship, and it can be placed in its analogous position in the shield climate control area. Would go a long way I think. I switched from a Constellation Aquila to this, but I did so for a few particular reasons. First and foremost, its speed, resilience, and very good rear-facing weaponry are a great combination for my style of play, which is focused on avoiding or escaping combat than engaging. With that in mind, I also do have a relatively large and diverse fleet, and I can thus sacrifice some of the versatility that I enjoyed in the Aquila, because I have, or will have, better available options if I choose to do something either more mercantile or combat-focused. For someone who can afford to lose that bit of utility because of a broader selection in the fleet, this is a good way to shave $60 or so off of your fleet's price to save for what's next, without really losing any capability. It's less appealing, I think, for someone with fewer ships to choose from.

Fair points all around. It will really boil down to what exploration does.. The 400i will have the edge once escape pods get implemented, now that death of a spaceman is going in (the Connies don't have those), but some minor changes could have really made the 400i an actual contender against the Constellation-series. Upsize the forward guns by one, make the cargo area slightly larger (or let the cargo stack higher), and bump the 2 size 1 missile racks to a size 2. Oh, and the capacitors probably need some love (seriously, the pilot capacitors are really weak). Or, none of those and give it the AIR system!
Of course, I strongly doubt those won't happen, but maybe it just boils down to them misspeaking. It's an excellent Cutlass/Freelancer competitor, and comparing it to the Connie is probably just a bad comparison outright.

In theory it is more solo-able, as if you get attacked you just full burn off in one direction, jump out of pilot seat and into gunner (not counting potential blades as they aren't in yet), and then unload on pursuer while the ships gains enough acceleration to outrun the threat, them jump back in pilot seat and quantum. Also, while it is not a stealth ship by any means, I feel like the the EM numbers will get tweaked so that it's pretty low for it's size, which means its more likely to slip in and out than a Connie.

I like it in that it's the first Origin ship that doesn't go overboard with the luxury bit. Rather, it's a smartly laid-out / efficient design that has a bright, clean and professional look to it that offers a reasonable contrast to the many militaristic or utilitarian designs we see so much. It's just a sharp and reasonable exploration/general purpose all-rounder. I am surprised they didn't use the AIR Flow technology that was promoted with the 100 series. It supposedly makes Origin ships very fuel efficient. I wonder if this ship is a gas guzzler? Fuel efficiency is a big +, especially for an explorer.

Perhaps if they'd made it even 70 metres instead of 60, they could have fit everything they needed to like component access without putting two stupid wasteful rooms in the middle of the ship, a bigger cargo bay with space for a roc and ursa, an X1 bay that can double as additional storage or for holding a nox or dragonfly, and more spacious feeling upstairs interior and corridors.

Now having had the 400i for a year, I think I can safely say that while the 400i is a very nice ship to fly, it doesn't actually bring a lot of functionality compared to its competitors. Especially not given the 400i's high price. It holds less cargo, can't carry most vehicles and is only lightly armed compared to its competition.
You should buy the 400i if you already have another ship to carry cargo and vehicles, have money to spare and want to spend it on a beautiful ship that feels nice to fly.
But don't buy the 400i if you need a ship to make you money. Don't buy it if you are looking for utility or functionality, because the 400i is more expensive (in in-game price) and offers less in that regard than other ships. You are much better off with a Cutlass Black, a Constellation or a Mercury Star Runner, all of which are signifcantly cheaper yet do the same things better than the 400i does. I don't get the comparison with the andromeda, one is a gunship, the other an exploration vessel. The 400i is almost half the price of the aquila, so it's normal to expect a bit less functionality, but at the same time it has less crew requirements so that balances out. The firepower is pretty comparable too, the fact that the guns are more shifted towards the turrets rather than the pilot is actually a plus, provided that you have a crew to man the turrets, but neither the Aquila of the 400i are intenede to fight, and from a defensive perspective I prefer the weapons in the 400i, they cover more sides and the turrets, which have a lot more firepower now with the capacitor's gameplay, are not peashooters...and it has 2 instead of just one. It also has more quantum fuel and redundant components than the connie, so there's that.
Of course if you want to judge an exploration ship by its ability to do combat comparing is with a combat focused gunship, that's not gonna fly.....duh? that would be just like judging the andromeda based on its capability of doing exploration.

The window in the main living space is... underwhelming, to say the least. I also would have expected a skylight on the bridge or at least the living area. If there's one thing I've come to expect from Origin ships, it's expansive, largely unobstructed view from those spaces. The 100i has a great view from the cockpit. The 300i has a great view from the cockpit and a skylight. 600i just has great views. The 890 Jump has great views from all communal passenger areas, and a good view from the bridge.

I came very close to upgrading my Taurus for this ship but after looking at what fits in the 400i I just couldn't move foward. The connie is looking very old now compared to newer ships like this one and it has a lot of flaws yes but as for the Taurus especially, I don't think anything beats it at this price range. I paid it 150$ back in 2017 I think and I still don't regret it.
I had the Andromeda as a loaner ship for a while and now, even the Taurus can be very surprising in combat. The huge advantage I have from it it's the cargo where I can fit my Ursa Rover along with 2 ROCS and I can still walk around them and have a small unscanable cargo area in the back of the ship.
I really hope CIG revisits the Connies to fix the few flaws it has like the floating gears if an engine is blown away or all the lost space between the turrets and the living area which could be upgraded. As for the rest I don't this it needs to be changed but these minor changes would be more than welcome.
Anyway, thanks for the 400i review which backs my decision to stay in the RSI team ;)

Hey, first of all, great Video and great conclusion. I agree with most of what you said but as someone who owns a 400i and an MSR, I want to add my opinion to this about the ship and the price it comes with.
First of all, the 400i seems like an good allrounder for the time we wait for exloration/pathfinding comes in the game. I personally really like the 890J stylish look of it, but looks are subjective, so I wont count that one in. The 400i costs 220 as a Warbond and 250 as a standalone ship, and that is a hefty pricetag. Right now, the ship has nothing to offer other ships couldnt do as well.
The Cargo capacity for example is a little lower than the Cutty Black, but the Cutty comes with half the price in real money and only 1.3 mil ingame. I assume the 400i will be priced around 4-6 mil ingame. But since this is all speculation I will stick to the real money prices. So basically the Cutty Black does the same as the 400i for half the price. Sure, it doesnt look as fancy and it isnt as modern and up to date as the 400i, but some ppl might prefer the rusty, trashy look of DRAKE ships, and as I said, looks are subjective.
The downside of the 400i is, that the cargo bay in the back is way to small for most vehicles. The cyclone barely fits, and only the variants without a turret on top do so. The ROC doesnt fit, wich makes it way less versatile than the Cutty Black or MSR. However, CIG stated that the G12 Rover will fit inside the 400i, but that comes with a little Problem. The Cargo ramp is too small again. The website states the G12 to be 5.8 Meters wide, the Cyclone is 4 meters wide and barely fits.
That makes me hope, that CIG will eventually enlargen the Cargo bay. Or they may make the G12 way smaller than it is said to be. But honestly, its not hard to make the cargo bay larger. I have an Idea myself wich I wont elaborate here (hoever if someone is interested in hearing my idea I'll edit this comment later).
So my first conclusion is, the cutty can do all the 400i can but for half the money. The biggest difference are the components, and in this case, the 400i takes the cake far ahead. But since non of these ships are dedicated fighters, shields are not that important. But the components are also included in the price and well, something needs to justify the costly tag of the 400i, doesnt it?
So what about ships within its pricerange? Well, as I said before I am a long served MSR pilot and I use that thing for almost everything. The MSR comes at 260 bucks, wich is only 10 more than the 400i (speaking in both cases of non-warbond editions). But for that 10 bucks you'll get al lot more. A lot more of everything, actually. The MSR has around 2.5 times the cargo capacity of the 400i(114 SCU for the MSR), and the cargo bay is a very open space with no obstructions.
You can fit 2 ROCs comfortably in it, and, if you're up for some Tetris, you can jam up to 4 ROCs inside it. You can fit every ground vehicle except the Tonk inside it. So the points for Cargo space and versaitility of the Cargo Space go to the MSR.
The MSR has 2 size 3 weapons for the pilot and 2 Turrets with 2 size 3's each. However, the pilot-controlled weapons cannot be switched for size 4s, so youre stuck with size 3s. The MSR also has 2 size 2 shields, so the 400i takes the cake in terms of Shield capacitiy and firepower for the pilot. However the MSR has a massive Hull HP pool of 37.500 wich is a little less than half of the Carrack, wich in turn is massive for a ship of its size.
(yes, I know that, according to the Internet, the Conny Andromeda has over 180.000 HPs, but all of the HPs of an ship are split across its Detachable components. So ships like the Conny, with many detachable Components need to have an higher overall HP pool in order to withstand some damage. Dont simply compare HP pools from one ship with another). IDK how much HP the 400i has, but I doubt its nearly the same as the MSR. So what the MSR lacks in shield capacity, it makes up for in Hull HP. And since the MSR is a blockade runner (heavily armored, fast frighters) its prob. going to be a lot more when physicalized armor comes in.
As stated correctly in this video the Connys are also more or less within the 400is pricerange, and they also do have a size 3 shield with way stronger weapons, so unfortunately, the 400i cannot really keep up with the connies, and shares the same place withe the MSR in this little comparison.
So what do I recommend? If you want to buy a good allrounder, but you wanna safe some money, go with a Cuttlas Black. Both, the cutty and 400i, are good allrounders, and I can hardly imagine a situation where the 400i has to handle something the cutty could not. If you have around 250 bucks to spend, I either recommend taking a closer look the one of the Connies, or add 10 bucks and get an MSR (wich also will be able to collect and store data, once that feature is in).
I want to clearify that Im not hating the 400i, Im a huge Origin Simp and I f*cking love the 400i, so I happily yeeted my Ares ourt of my hangar for the new discount 890J. But, looking at that whole thing objectively, the 400i is just a more expensive and extravagant Cutty as in the games current state. This, however, might change once Pathfinding come to the game.

I think everyone is looking at this ship the wrong way. I have a Corsair, which I feel will fill out the fighting/exploring role very well and be perfect for 2-3 friends; but I bought the 400i because it is the perfect solo space RV for general runabouts and occasionally taking passengers, and it kind of bridges the gap between something like the Redeemer and the Corsair.

  • @Leptospirosi

I have the 400i and a Taurus that I bought (but not activated) the CCU package to upgrade to a Corsair and I'm debating your same considerations. It is cozy ship that feels smaller then it actually is and IMO it better compares with a long range freelancer. In my fleet it will probably replace the 315p being better at everything, but it won't replace the Taurus because it cant.
At this point the 315p is in a very weird place, compressed between the much smaller and agile 135c and this much more usable 400i which has 3 times the range an 3 and a half times the cargo, plus the bike.
Is the 400i worth the price?
It depends on what actual utility it will have in the future as an exploration ship (it has the starmap console) or how lucrative pathfinding will be when the gameplay will be added.
It probably will be much less capable then a Carrack or a 600i at exploring far and distant, but, unless the 400i pathfinding/exploration is fledged enough and equally capable as the Aquila, it will become a glorified 315p for 3 times the price.

This is exactly my opinion on it as well. It is a much better design for an Origin ship, but does not even compare utility wise to the MSR or Constellation series, particularly the Taurus. It is literally 3X a 315p, that was an apt comparison, meaning this will be the ideal drug smuggling ship for people who loved the 315p, and don't want to risk flying a MSR for whatever reason.

It seems lacking compared to other ships in its class, but provides enough of the elements necessary to complete it's intended purpose. That said, I did CCU a G12 token into the 400i because I haven't kept an Origin ship in my lineup for a while despite loving their style. So I see this ship as an "ever day flier" that provides utility with a touch of class and is easy on the eyes. My biggest complaint is that there is no excuse to not put the top turret over the star map instead of right outside the rear window, restricting its field of fire while partially blocking the view. But in the end it's a classy version of the Cutlass Black.

Great analysis. I do think that the 400i strikes a very precise balance that will pay off when we are more fleshed out gameplay for exploration. To me the lower crew requirements and design can turn out very valuable to maintain efficiency. Definitely not designed for aggression though.

One thing I can say about this 400 though is there are two exit/entry points instead of one like the MSR. That big solo entry ramp is the reason I don't fly it.

This ship is in my opinion more like a camper for vacation which can be used a little bit for trading and stuff. People need to stop comparing ships against each other and just take them for what they are. Even in concept pictures the crew is mostly in their freetime clothes and not armor. Its for travveling the verse and not for making big money. Just as a Yacht is not comparable with a fishing ship even if itsthe same size.
So far its the most refined ship i think. I like it :)

  • @uberfu

STL keeps comparing the singular model 400i to several versions of the Constellation - KEEP IN MIND that you can only pick 1 Constellation to take out at a time - so whatever advantages the Aquilla might have - you do not gain those by taking out an Andromeda. STL shjould have reviewed the Connies and picked a specific comparison. I mean come on STL the 400i dopesn't have the hot tub the Pheonix has - so if you're way the hell out in the middle of nowhere w/ the 400i and want to go for a dip - you're SOL. But then again if you're in the Aquilla - you ahve the same problem.

I personally like the Interior of the 400 far better than the Constellation. It just feels that the space es far better used and that there are more things to do and more places to be. While I hope that the constellation will get an interior facelift at some point the 400 is for me currently the nicest vessel to cruise around in a small form factor.
