    STL, I think you missed one good role for the Perseus, which would be larger convoy escort. Minimal crew and slow speeds to keep up with the convoy would be perfect matches, as well as the ability to push out the engagement range with those larger guns. Also, pairing them up for bombardment missions at range would be pretty well suited for them.

Keeping wounded people alive until the ship can limp back to back to base to then pass on those severely injured to proper medical facilities (either at port or via something like an Apollo or an Endeavor) should be a thing for all ships intended for combat use.

  • @julopabene8736
    @julopabene8736 3 роки тому +14

    Honestly, looking at the Perseus, I think it is for a) combined fleet battles and b) support roles.
    In combined fleet battles, this ship will counter enemy sub- and small capitals, such as the Polaris, Hammerhead and Nautilus, so it is very much an Enabler for Major Capital ships, fighters and bombers, and capships again, respectively.
    But looking at its layout and the ability to carry an Ursa rover (or other future ground vehicles, still hoping for a more proper APC/IFV that is not the Ursa), I think it will be a major factor in ground battles and base invasions. It's so big and well protected that it can stand against Surface Defense Turrets and with four S7 ballistic cannons, I can't imagine this thing not popping turrets like it's no man's business.
    So, in my humble, probably never gonna own one of these opinion, I think the to-buy list goes:
    Hammerhead for general Anti-Fighter/Bomber duties, probably the best of the ships for smaller scale PvP and support for larger scale battles
    Polaris for dedicated anti-capital warfare and fighting off the big leagues, definitely more of a PvE ship (how many players will be flying a Bengal? Maybe vs Javelins, but I think most combat will be against AI driven capital ships, a la Vanduul incursions), so for large faction PvE
    Nautilus for a mixed purpose indirect anti-cap/anti-fighter ship for when you have time to set up. Depending on how large faction PvP will go and how players can claim territory, it could be useful for PvP, but like the Polaris, I see this more used as anti-Vanduul. Though one big usecase I see is just setting up some turret mines in a PvE conflict zone, sitting back and watching the firework of small ships getting ground, while keeping an anti-cap mine and the S7 guns to deal with anything larger that comes into view. This is probably best as a small faction PvE ship
    The Perseus now fills the last slot on this two-axis system, being effective against all sorts of sub-cap and small capships, it is likely to engage most of the targets players can actually afford, I think it can go up against a Kraken, a Hammerhead, a Polaris, Carrack, perhaps even effectively support against Idrises, and then also be an incredibly useful Air Support ship, so I think if you plan on doing large scale PvP, this is probably the ship for you.

    8:05 you assumed the Hammerhead would win a surprised engagement... When you said armor is an important factor earlier in the vid. If those S4's can't pen the armor of the Perseus (likely the case since the Perseus is probably slow due to heavy armor), it doesn't matter how many turrets the Hammerhead would be able to bring to bear; none would be able to cause actual damage.

I know people talk about Javelins or W/E but having everyone online, the logistics to support larger ships and crew them, if you think your small org is just going to be running around in a Javelin all the time you are fooling yourselves. Taking out 7 fighters, is not going to be a lot of fun. The QD is 2-3 times slower than a large ship and the fuel runs out very quickly. It is fine in the game's current state because, there is nothing to lose and you really do not have a ton to gain and not that far to travel. But once the game goes live, the fighter swarms are not going to be as popular in most situations you will find yourself in playing the game.

    The range on the Hammerhead's gatlings is about 3.7 km. The size 7 ballistic cannons will have at least 5km worth of range. The Perseus will keep its distance, flying outward spirals, while shooting it's main guns off the side, slightly aft. That's how it engages a target like the HH. It has a lot more to fear from a swarm of small / medium fighters than a large target.

  • @jameshanna8762
    @jameshanna8762 3 роки тому +2

    I imagine an Ares Inferno diving on the top or bottom rear, focusing fire on the S3 gun remote turrets. S7 gun turrets on the Perseus could not be brought to bear. All you would be facing for incoming fire would be one of the S3 gun remote turrets, which could possibly be disabled by the S7 ballistic cannon on the Ares, and then zipping past to position for another run. All ships are vulnerable to missiles and torpedoes, but this thing is vulnerable to smaller craft with ballistic guns, too.
    They need to add a couple more S3 turrets and make them all quads if they want the Perseus to be able to fend off fighters and torpedoes effectively. It may do well against larger, slower craft, but it is prey for smaller ships as it stands today. The Carrack once had a similar problem with a vulnerability from the rear. Thankfully, CIG fixed that turret blind spot. Lets hope they fix the Perseus before it hits flight ready status.

      I think you're mostly right about the Perseus being vulnerable to fighters, but I doubt one Ares could punch through its multiple large shields quickly enough to hurt it alone. You'd need to amass a pretty impressive strike group to handle it without some major losses -- and your Ares is easier to nullify with another fighter -- even something like an Avenger, potentially - remember, that fighter doesn't have to destroy your Ares. As soon as the Ares has to break off from hitting the Perseus, the other fighter has won the engagement.

    • @jameshanna8762
      @jameshanna8762 3 роки тому

      @@billyhyde1415 Good points. If the Perseus is in a fleet, fighters will be able to protect it, as you say. My intent was to illustrate the vulnerability to ballistic based small craft with their shield penetrating ability, especially an S7 on an Inferno.
      As we all know from experience, fleet maneuvers are few and far between. Most people buying a Perseus intend to fly it solo in the hope that they will be able to crew it with npcs. An Ares Ion may be a different story, altogether, as its lasers will be better mitigated by the Perseus' shields.
      The Ares will have to pick their time and battles, just as the Perseus will. Both are vulnerable to fighters. Fleet operations will be the safest bet. Very cagey pirate captains stalking lone larger vessels may also prosper with the Perseus. Solo randoms with npc crews are Reclaimer bait.

      Having ships with weaknesses isn't a bad thing. In the same way the hammerhead is vulnerable to things at range, this is weaker against smaller ships, meaning the two compliment each other nicely, but in big fleet engagements it allows for more tactical play, as you try to pick off their anti fighter defenses.

    I think it's likely, since this ship is intended to defeat sub-capital ships, that it not only has big ballistic guns for superior penetration of both shields and armor, but I bet it also has better armor than any other sub-capital ship, thus the slow SCM speed. They haven't included an armor stat for a while now so until that happens we don't know, but I think it makes sense for it's role and to explain it's speed.
    As you mention, with the Penetration system it's possible that, just like in real life, thick armor may effectively be invulnerable to weapons fire below a certain size/AP rating.
    So there would be three possibilities, firstly, the armor is thick/hard enough relative to the size/hardness/speed of the income weapons fire that it suffers no damage and can take unlimited fire of that type. Secondly, the armor is thick/hard enough to prevent outright penetration, but each impact does damage the armor to some degree, and eventually enough hits to the same area will weaken the armor to the point of failure. Thirdly, the armor isn't thick/hard enough to prevent penetration, at this point the relatively hardness/thickness of the armor to the hardness/size/speed of the income rounds will determine how much damage the rounds can still do after penetrating, and the armor will under sustained fire fail much sooner than in the second situation.
    If the Perseus is rocking near-Capital armor, then it's likely that Size 5 ballistics wouldn't be able to damage the armor at all in most areas, while the Perseus's Size 7's would easily penetrate the armor of everything Sub-Capital.

Id like to see the ability for a large combat ship/sub-capitol ship to be able to transport, drop off, support, and exfil a commando team. Also, this would make a great platform for a fleet scout/recon vessel.

    One thing to consider is the player investment.
    The hammerhead has 6 turrets and a pilot seat, possibly needing more, while the Perseus needs 3 or 4. Optimal numbers for each being 6 crew on an HH for most efficient firepower as opposed to the Perseus 3 to get at most of its firepower.
    Given an equal org size for this fleet battle, I think the Perseus is usually the superior ship. The hammerhead makes a lot of sense as an enforcement ship, but not as a medium/sub cap fleet centerpiece.
    In an org of 10, a Perseus fleet’s fighters should be able to hold off the hammerhead fleet’s fighters / bombers.
    The reason I’m considering it is because we want a good multicrew combat ship that can be run with 3-5 people really effectively. For us it’s coming down to the Perseus vs the Redeemer, since for us the price difference when factoring in the gray market is about $50.
    We will probably end up with a Perseus, though the Redeemer is attractive as an escort for our commercial or industrial vessels.

    There is a class of ships in most navies right below corvettes, called sloops, avisos or patrol ships. They are considered auxiliaries along with minesweepers, landing ships and other armed naval ships. So the Hammerhead, Nautilus and Perseus all fit in there, able to support themselves by being merchantman escorts. If you own one, get in touch with owners of Hull D's and E's as they are the ones able to afford your ship and its costs. Buy a little cargo (instead of carrying a vehicle) to help defray expenses. These things are a money sink otherwise. I know, I have a Hammerhead.

    Perseus will be able to put holes into the Hammerheads from a distance. As long as the Perseus keeps its distance, the Hammerhead is dead. Perseus weakness is against small fighters. Quick question. You are right the mine layer has the extra shield generator but didn't CIG also mention that it was more heavily armoured than a usual Corvette due to the defensive nature of its roll?
    Seeing as the Nautilus has the 1 size seven turrent it may be possible to win 1 v 1 against the Persius by out tanking it and having enough DPS of it's own to break the Persius before it's own tank breaks. (This is especially relevant if the Nautilus can manoeuvre so only one enemy size 7 can be brought to bear). I see the Persiuse as a bit of a glass cannon tbh.

    Well the DPS estimate was wrong by about half the amount we know today, so the Perseus would deal more than double the estimate in this video and completly obliterate the HH in any kind of scenario. He was right about the fighters being an issue, but only in swarms and if they take even one shot from those S7's it's game over for them regardless. Also for the value proposition argument...I am much more likely to use the Perseus because it only requires 2 other friends, than the HH that requires at least 4 other. And as for utility in a fleet, if your argument is that the HH is more useful because it deletes fighters...well guess what? If there's a HH on the opposing fleet theres a target for the Perseus to hunt and then you can say goodbye to your small fighters killer giving the opposing fleet the advantage of still owning the Perseus and the fighters.

    I saw this and assumed it was basically the reverse hammerhead, hammer shoots at things below itself this shots at bigger things well.
    Mostly because the explanation for the Ares implied smaller guns won't even be able to really damage the bigger ships, so yes the hammerhead can probably get a gun on target easier but if they don't do a lot who cares.
    Plus the range different is kinda bonkers, and whilst yes the hammerhead is faster, it's not stealthy, and isn't that much quicker to close the gap without taking a pounding.

Obviously there's overlap in capabilities, but I think that's where each one specializes.
