I don't recommend Local Dimming for SDR content and general desktop usage, however in HDR mode the blooming isn't nearly as bad as this video makes it seem. It's unnoticeable in most normal scenes, and minimal in very dark scenes.
Why do you not recommend local dimming for SDR content? I am planning to replace my aging monitor with this and besides web browsing, it'll be alot of SDR contents (UA-cam, animes, etc)
If he's recommending turning off local dimming, why get a mini led monitor? Only mini led monitors have the local dimming feature. Simply go for a good VA monitor that won't have the premium associated with mini led.
@@spoiler9112 Apparently the local dimming is still worth it in some use cases though. Btw if you know a better monitor in this price range (or even $100 more) then I'd love a recommendation
@DanielS-zq2rr The AOC CQ27G3Z is a well reviewed, 27 inch curved monitor with 240 hz. I bought, then returned it because of issues all VA's have, namely the obvious backlight, ghosting/smearing and flicker issues I wasn't going to settle for. My unit also had poor edge to edge uniformity. I did have to bite the bullet and go for an OLED. Search over
If you need something to hold you over for 2 years while OLED prices go down or you just don’t want to spend that much money(in the U.S. that is, where I was able to get it for $279.99 plus taxes. It was once at 259.99 and it might go lower in the future) for a mini led. Poor VA panel viewing angles aside, this is honestly a great monitor to game on as well as view media 👌🏼 Trying to watch a dark movie on a non-mini led ips(at the same price point) compared to this VA with local dimming on strong is a night and day difference. The white bar test is a bit of an exaggeration as most media won’t look like that and will obviously have some colors and objects/backgrounds on the screen. So instead of greyed washed out blacks that seem to cover the entire screen on an ips during a dark scene (backlight bleed included) you’ll get an experience closer to an OLED. Nowhere near as good but it’s definitely closer to an OLED than it is to an ips in those dark scenes. That brightness can be a bit much at times. So mess around with the settings and decide when to have hdr and local dimming on/off. Hope this helps someone. Sold my ips and settled for this, glad I did. Was gonna go with the cooler master ips mini led but it has a ton of complaints that I don’t wanna deal with also it costs around $200 more 🤷🏻♂️
I bought it like a week ago and I agree with all You wrote :) Unfortunately I think that overdrive function doesn't work like it should cuz during ufo test I can't see any difference or the difference is barely noticeable I don't know :( but...I don't see any smearing in games as well. I was afraid cuz Ive been using IPS monitors only but I'm in shock! Maybe I'm not that sensitive or maybe I've got good panel. Ok there is a little loss of sharpness when playing and moving mouse especially noticeable when you look at bushes or some detailed elements like nets or leaves but now I would have to connect my IPS to check if it was the same and I didn't notice it earlier :D I'm playing the last of us part 1 now and its very dark in many scenes and locations but it looks very good. what makes this monitor worth buying is the contrast brightness HDR local dimming and the blacks the whites. Omg I thought that people were overhyped with this but seeing it for the first time will never let you come back to IPS :) viewing angles on IPS were of course better that's a VA after all but colours are very good :) I'm very happy I bought it :)
@@GibGib0n yea. Honestly I would rather have an ips for better viewing angles but you can’t beat these features at this price point. I think the black smearing is really only noticeable at lower frame rates or you’re hyper sensitive and should just pay the extra cash for a higher end monitor. You can’t be asking for the world under $300 🤣
Really useful feedback, even more tempted now! Shame about the price hike in the UK at £349, but still reasonable. Hopefully I'll catch it in a sale sometime...
Man, if you're only looking at a white line on a black screen, then yes, turn off the zone dimming. But if you also play games and watch movies and TV series, then this is a good monitor for your money.
you mean you dont primarily use your monitor to watch white boxes move across black screens? also local dimming in hdr is great. sdr its not really meant for it. uploader doesnt understand that, now you do.
i've had this monitor for a few months now and i'm pretty happy with it, but there are some small problems like brightness control over ddc/ci not working, otherwise i think it is very good for how much I paid

At £350 that's either an insane bargain designed to go full aggressive on pricing strategy, or I end up wondering what the catch actually is. But seems of all the new display techs coming out, it's still going to be a straight shoot between OLED and micro-LED. Personally feel a regular backlit LED would be preferable to that level of flicker.
look at the reviews from others there is no such flicker it is literally OLED quality on visual, only much brighter. 1300 nits vs 190nits on oled. Feel it.
bro didnt test anything. hes giving his uninformed opinion. he doesnt even understand when to use local dimming which is a main feature of this monitor.
I've had this monitor for close to a month now. I love it. The local dimming is best on strong mode for HDR only, and honestly, the blooming is not bothersome at all while gaming or watching movies. Where it does get noticeable is when there are like stars in space. There is some mild VA black smearing however I didn't get bothered by it when I'm in the zone on gaming. All of this is still not a deal breaker for me though. Colors are amazing, the sRGB mode is great, it can get pretty bright even with SDR content but with HDR content, the brightness and colors REALLY pop. It's the best monitor I've ever owned and you can't beat the price tag with the features it has. DisplayHDR1000 certified with Mini-LED's for under 300??? There are monitors out there that have HDR400-600 that cost more than double this price. Mind blowing.
Me too and I really like it, I have also 240hz oled too if it says something! I advice to test strong OD, I thinks its great and I didnt see overshoot too much.
