Fun fact, My Chemical Romance judged a radio contest and awarded the winner an opportunity to open for them at a concert. The band they choose/won was Escape the Fate which was Ronnie Radke's original band.
Seriously? How did I not know this?
@@SparkimusPrimeme either xxx
And that makes me love them all the more.
I’m sure others will comment something similar to this but this song was written about Gerard(singer) and Mikey(bassist) Way’s grandmother.
Basically the song is about regretting not being present during a loved one’s final days because you can’t bring yourself to come to terms with the fact that they are dying. But, when they die you wish could go back and be with them.
Imo, while mourning their grandmother was definitely the main reason for the song, certain lines like "we are the very hurt you sold" imply that Gerard is also experiencing some self-loathing over the fact that he has sort of monetized death and mourning and suffering in his career, and the stark reminder of what those things really feel like to experience firsthand.
I don't know if anyone said this yet but Gerard and Mikey's grandmother was a ballet dancer, seeing how this song is about her death, the part where Helena gets up and dances always struck me as her soul having one more dance before being laid to rest "The blade you stain" line refers to Gerard's guilt for not being there in her final moments. "We'll meet again when both our cars collide" he hopes to see her again when he dies too.
The limes bit got me dyin omg
"Maybe shes a lemon. Mortal enemy of the lime" 😂😂😂
This album was superb, I’m Not Ok is an iconic angsty banger but The Ghost Of You is such a beautiful song
Ghost of you is my favourite MCR song. Makes me cry everytime. I actually hate I’m not ok. But I’ll still listen to it lol
That's Gerard Way, brother to Mikey, creator of Umbrella Academy,& singer of songs. He's a national GD treasure. Long live My Chemical Romance ♥️
This song is about his grandmother's passing. She was a huge support of the band and they were very close. her death was hard for everyone.
"just like the hearse you die to get in again, we are so far from you" He's far away from dying, so far away from the hearse, just like he's far away from his grandmother now that she's gone.
"The match you strike to incinerate the lives of everyone you know" is how her death effected everyone negatively.
"The worst you take from every heart you break" is like saying her death took away the worst thing she could have, herself.
"And like the blade you stain, well I've been holding on tonight" is how she was in surgery trying to hold on, so he's holding on now.
The chorus, "what's the worst thing I can say, things are better if I stay, so long and goodnight, so long not goodnight." There's not really much that can be said anymore, so what's the worst that could happen? so he's saying staying in the world, and saying his goodbyes wishing her a goodnight, but it's not a good night for him.
"Came a time when every star fall brought you to tears again, we are the very hurt you sold." In the end, she was in so much pain that she was praying to go in her sleep, praying to die on stars, and lamenting being so selfish and hoping for something that'd hurt those around her (selling them out).
"Can you hear me? are you near me? can we pretend to leave and then we'll meet again when both our cars collide" He's wondering if she's there, in a heaven, or as a spirit beside him. He's wondering if he can pretend this isn't goodbye forever, and that they'll meet again one day when he dies himself, likely in a car crash.
MCR are an edgy band, and sing a lot about self harm, such as dying in car crashes, self inflicted bullet wounds, cutting ones self, overmedicating to the extreme. A lot of this is catharsis and raising awareness, pointing out that people in the emotional states they sing about do self harm, and do contemplate self-ending, and has helped an entire post 9/11 generation come to terms with their emotional states and they helped build a culture around mental health awareness that was already growing at the time. The lyrics about the blade you stain could also be taken to mean self harm, and the various talks about how she harmed those around her could be a double meaning for someone who has a self destructive personality and burns bridges with everyone who cares about them. There are a lot of people who take that feeling and meaning for catharsis, because a lot of people are self-destructive, self-sabotaging and prone to self harm in this way, the lead singer included. It has wide appeal with audiences going through some shit, appeal with people who care about the band, and wider appeal because it's a hell of a piece of music.
Final message: I did chuckle at your limes and fox jokes. Heard you say limes, and thought "yeah, he's doing that on purpose" XD Also, you're awesome! I always appreciate your fresh insights into the music I enjoy the most. It's like listening for the first time all over again. Thank you for being you and being so awesome!
Just replying something I found interesting that I didn't know about until recently. Most of the lyrics in this song are directed at Gerard, as if it's from his grandmother's perspective. He wrote this song as a hate letter to himself about not being there for her when she was dying. "Just like the match you strike to incinerate the lives of everyone you know", "what's the worst you take from every heart you break". "You" is Gerard. Most of the lyrics in this song are him calling himself a selfish piece of shit. But the perspective does shift from him to her at times.
@@seanbobsthat makes a lot more sense because he was hard on himself for not being around for her
Thank you for this I've been a mcr fan for awhile and I never understood the blade you stain part
@@seanbobs no because Gerard was there when her grandma died notice how they took a two year break between bullets and three cheers they might of had to take a two year break because Gerard was busy taking care of his grandma
@@seanbobssorry if it came across rude I was just backing up the other theory by giving some evidence also she died in 2003 a year before three cheers for sweet revenge which the album the song Helena is in
Gerard as a pall bearer in the end looks so sincerely devastated. It kills me knowing the song was for his grandmother.
I always was struck by the last few seconds, when he puts his hand to the hearse window as if he can hold onto her for just a moment longer. 😢
Same with the Black Parade scene where the Patient reaches out as he's dying and Gerard reaches back for him across the barrier of life and death. I don't know why, but it's such a comforting image. The idea of the reaper or the ferryman, someone holding out a hand so you don't have to make that frightful journey alone...
This album is what what got most of our generation into this band. They have an incredible presence, and usually put a song together based on that!
Can 100% confirm this song is about a chick named Helena who destroyed limes because she hates margaritas since they're a Mexican drink and Trump is still going to build the wall.
W comment 😂
Definitely underrated comment 😂
they do deal with death a lot, yes lol. for context, the band was formed in the wake of 9/11 as a way to deal with the trauma. they're from newark, new jersey which is literally right next to new york
Gotta do "The Ghost of you" from the same album!
This is the real emo
It’s my absolute favorite.
Totally
was about to comment this!!!
React to "I'm Not Ok (I Promise)" by them next!!
Yes ! And it ain't about death, you'll be fine lol
Oh For Fucks Sake is the BEST response to the start of the second movement I've ever heard 💯🫡
"Things are better in fork steak"
the best misheard of this song, now i cant unhear it 😂😂😂😂
😭😂😂
This video is what solidified that I DO need interpretive dancers at my funeral
The second vocal is Ray Toro ♥ one of the best "modern" guitarist, so humble human and great hair hahahaha.. and the principal vocal is GERARD WAY ♥ the platonic love of a whole generation (including me)!
My fav MCR album. Black Parade is amazing sure, but this one has tons of bangers, and it seems like a lot of people don't realize it.
MCR is one of the most overlooked bands in music to me. Not because they didn't reach an appropriate level of fame, but because of how misunderstood what they were doing was and still kinda is.
They were labeled as an emo band and got stuck with that stigma, which unfortunately led to a while lot of people writing them off or assuming what they were and not really paying attention. MCR was one of the greatest rock operas in music history and so many people in and out of the industry completely missed it. They were shelved on the level of bands like AFI, when honestly they were far more Queen than AFI.
Can I just say thank you for these videos. This is the way I react to most metal/rock songs and I love them. Thank you again much love
Thank you my friend I’m happy I can mirror your enjoyment! Even if I do get slightly confused at times 🤦♂️😂
@@TeddyGreyOSread my comment please
" is all their songs about death?"
Pretty much hahah
Gerard is the lead. Mikey is Gs brother and bass player. Ray is guitar and vocals. Bob was drums. Frankie is lead guitar
Please check out Panic! At The Disco's old songs, like:
- The Ballad of Mona Lisa
- I Write Sins Not Tragedies
- Build God, Then We'll Talk
The "fox states" but had me 💀
"Things are better if I stay" 😂❤
I believe the song with the minimal death conotation with a movie clip from My Chemical Romance would be "Na Na Na Na Na Na" that was from a very different period of the band, or "Honey, This mirror isn't big enough for the two of us"
"I Never Told You What I Do For A Living" is also my fave from this album
I’d recommend the Ghost of You music video next, or the song Mama
This is a song of loss and the struggle of acceptance of his grandmother. A gorgeous ode to the complication that is loss in the present.
The Ghost of you by MCR is a must! The song, vocals and video is incredible.
I would say this is better enjoyed as an album, you just get hit with banger after banger!
I can't tell you how many times I watched this video, back when MTV played it. I had this dance *down*.
This is one of my favorite songs ever bro. A classic
That look on your face when she came back to life was absolutely priceless! Loved it.
Childhood memories love this
for me, Ghost of You is the best of them, but Helena is great too
Agreed!
Gerard's performances always give me chills.
You crack me up! I’m a total ARMY but always listening to new stuff or old stuff favorites because I love your comments. Plus, you’re a total cutie!
The only reactor who makes me laugh out loud but appreciates the music and the story the lyrics tell. Or, in this case, do not tell.
Can’t wait for your BTS commentary (even if it’s not your fave).
Happy New Year!
I feel like you should react the their song Cancer, its meaning is clearer and it's hauntingly beautiful ❤
I’ve seen several of your reaction videos at this point and, to be honest, I’m really surprised that you’re not a “rock guy” of some sort….especially metal. Rock and metal (and even punk to some degree) are all about the release. Everything is built up for the specific purpose of being able to relieve yourself of something. To just throw all of your energy out there about this specific feeling or this specific thing and just put it all out there so you get it out of your head, out of your body, out of your soul and put it into a medium where you force it to live somewhere else. It’s why it’s so easy for people to connect to on a primal level. You don’t really NEED to understand what the song is about cuz what you’re meant to do is understand the need to release that FEELING.
Clicked on the video so fast. I'm happy you're doing more of MCR. Topics of songs are different but there is concept album from Cancer patient perspective so yeah there's lot of death.
Blue October - Hate Me (10th Anniversary) [Live]
Please keep on with the reactions...your enthusiasm is genuine and infectious!
yes please
oh yes. Hate Me ===
💯
This would be excellent, even more amazing live
....yes🤣 For those of us who have been listening to MCR since they first began and our parents had to drive us to their concerts we can tell you that they are not a phase 🖤🤘 emos forever! I saw them on their reunion tour as a real life adult and I felt like I was a teenager again. They're everything haha *yes, Gerard created the comic Umbrella Academy! 🎉
This song is a tribute do Gerard and Michael Way, grandma (Helena) who past away. Thats why you feel all the emotion in lyrics and the music video
Really think really good ones by MCR are "the Ghost of You", and my favorite "the Sharpest Lives". If you still want to check more of them out.
fall out boy, who won the best video of the year @ the video musuc awards included in their acceptance speech (at the very end): "even though we ALL know My Chemical Romance really had the best video this year" - referring to THIS video, specifically.
and i couldn't agree more.
of corse MCR dezurvd it cause FOB sux
"Helena was a Trump supporter and now she's dead" 😂😂😂 I will never, NEVER, be able to listen to this again without thinking about that 😂
Also
Thank you for the venom. Best track off the 3 cheers album, check it out 👌
i don't know this guy so i'm hoping he's a supporter and thats a joke but if not that's actually not funny
she got ''hillaryed''
@@hessla23he’s British
This was hilarious XD
Will you react to their song "Ghost of You"?
Hey Teddy, I recommend Amy Winehouse- Valerie live acoustic. She has the most beautiful soul with so much emotion. Also, Back to Black. 😅 Good day then! ☮️
Can I just say, watching your progression of emo/punk/rock/metal taste and seeing you vibe with this music so fucking much since your “Watch The World Burn” reaction has been incredibly wholesome hahaha. Welcome to the community of social rejects and metalheads!
Hi!! Just wanted to jump in to wish everyone happy new year in advance 😊 also, hope you all stay healthy and safe!!
Teddy grey, I love your reaction videos so much! I hope for more content where you react to more evanescence songs! ;) ☺️
I don't know if it has previously been mentioned, but one of the reasons that a lot of My Chemical Romances older music revolves around death was because Gerard Way formed the band after 9/11 and was making music as a way of coping and therapy for himself and others. He took death and grief as a taboo subject and turned it into art.
dude I lost my breath laughing at your fox states bit LMAO
Fuck sake, all I am going to hear now is "Incinerate... the limes"... CHEERS TEDDY!
🔥the🍈!
My Chemical Romance was the music that expanded my music taste, it was exclusively hip hop then MCR came into the mix then later on slipknot, korn, soad and plenty others that i thought i would never listen too.
Okay can we talk about how the actress killed her dancing scene in the breakdown? Jenna Ortega could never
This was on repeat in my 18 year aaaaghhhhh😂
here i go, revisiting my childhood again.
This is one of my absolute favorites of theirs ❤️🔥
Helena was his grandma and this was a song where he interrupted the whole story in the album which he only did twice with I'm not okay and Helena which I'm not okay was about if you need help get help technically and Helena was about him grieving the lost of his grandma/remembering her
One of the catchiest choruses ever !!! Check out THE USED as well bee catchy screamo
I had a MCR cult on vampire freaks around when this came out.
Watch the fan made video for the song Sleep
It's my favorite for venting out.
Also, he pronounced her name as Hell - AYE - na
Helena was the name of his grandmother and he wrote the lyrics to this song shortly after she died (of natural causes). As far as I know, the song isn't about her, but he named it after her in his process of grieving.
His grandmother was actually named Elena, not Helena. So close.
@@bechillas7225 So close? Way to get snarky over a pointless piece of information about someone neither of us will ever meet. Anyway, it's just what I heard. Sorry to offend you.
Listen to This is How I Dissapear and Yesterday by MCR. They are my favorite band. I love watching these!
Their first two albums were amazing. Really set/popularized a genre for about a decade.
And not all of their songs are about death.
Limes omg killing me
He said “what’s the worst that I can say, things are better if I stay”
If you get a change try "Miss Murder" by AFI . Around similar genre.
I’d love to hear your take on
Taking Back Sunday - MakeDamnSure
Oh Teddy, how i would love to dissect metal/rock lyrics all night long with you! I swear....this would be soooo much fun and mind-opening. Nerd-moments included😂
Your journey down the metal road is so deep and there is so much more to find.
German Teddy-Fangirl out❤
Just love how you approach each song with such an open mind and heart! Thanks again!
I love MCR so much. So many good songs.
Love this one, but Ghost of you is amazing tbh
Highly underrated song that I think you’d be really into or at least find very interesting: Spite and Malice by Placebo. They’re an older band that was always experimenting with different sounds so they can be one of those groups where you love one song and hate another, but Spite and Malice has both rap and rock elements and is possibly my fave track from them. There’s no music video sadly- official audio link is here though (lyrics are in the video description): ua-cam.com/video/aETrWclwyNE/v-deo.htmlsi=75Cv2hGIkJB60Mkc
OMG! FOR PETE SAKE…..TOOL/ The Pot
Check out "ghost of you" by them... only music video to ever get me choked up
A dive into I Prevail would be fun... King for A Day Pierce the Veil would be a proper emo bop
considering your previous enjoyment of Tool and your thoughts on lyrics in this video, I really think you should listen to "Lateralus" (by Tool) :D
Please react crystal lake live ressurection, especially first and second song, the energy i think same in slipknot download
"Nerd moment!" 😂😂 Loved it and so funny
react THE GHOST OF YOU BY MCR TOO
Why was I just transported to me sitting on the school bus blasting this and avoiding eye contact with everyone. 😂
hello, an atiny here, I love your reactions to ATEEZ lol
I was emo when I was 14yo so, "Destroya", "NaNaNa", "Demolition Lovers", "I know what you did for a living" and "Thank you for the venom" are prob your kind of music, idk
If you haven’t already listened to - Famous Last Words - you should. 🧡
Please listen to "The Ghost Inside - Aftermath"
Incredible Story, that the band went through.
You will hear and see in the music video. Don't want to spoiler.
Greetings from Germany! 🤘
Me still listening till now 2024
great reaction as always! you should check out Sleep Token - Take me back to Eden album or some songs from the album, it's another journey😁
Their first album is 🔥
You have to do famous last words by my chemical romance its a banger 🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥
That song always gives me chills
Ohyes! Ididnt miss it!!
The Ghost of you....might as well make it a 3 in a row....great song and video
Ghost of you by MCR should be your next reaction.
Badass man 🤘 You should definitely check out I'm Not Okay(I Promise) by these guys, everyone can relate to the lyrics in it at least one time in life. Oh and The Used is another band you should look into. I think you like Buried Myself Alive(my wife's favorite), Blue and Yellow and I Caught Fire.
Blue and Yellow is my absolute favorite from them!! Their remake of Under Pressure with MCR is amazing!
@@Nb123022 They covered burning down the House by The Talking Heads too, it was pretty cool. There's also a concert video on here of them covering Linkin Park.
The Ghost Of You or Mama next please!!
DAMMIT I can't help but hear "Fox states" now HAHAHAHA
This song still makes me feel the same giddy feeling I got hearing it for the first time as an angsty 16 year old
Yes, I see many have said something about this, but this song is very personal for Gerard
thought I had remembered correctly, because I was thinking it is about his grandmother, and it seems thats what others are saying as well, so ok
just didn't want to give you bad info. But its all good.
I have seem My Chemical Romance many, times. I remember actually trying to play their cd for school friends but they weren't really trying to give it a chance. But than when their song "I'm Not Ok ( I Promise)", became like mainstream popular, some of them were all about it, and I was like don't even talk to me, I literally just tried to introduce you to that entire album called " Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, which has that song on it, and Helena was another single from that album as well. So yeah no, that drove me nuts, and was irratating as crap.
One thing not as many may be familiar with, though some may already have commented about it here or there possibly, is what was actually their first album, or should I say debut album that come a couple years before this and was called "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.
Which isn't a bad album either, has quite a few good songs. Maybe you could say it sounds a little different in certain ways, but still good. Actually its been a while, but if I remember correctly I became quite attached to the song called " Demolition Lovers, from that first album of theirs. Though just a little info... they did have a different drummer for that album though.
Oh and to just give you a little heads up, My Chemical Romance is hard to place in just one genre, and even though they have some mental in there music, they are actually were mostly considered Screamo, as far as I can remember. Which pretty much means Emo, but with screaming, so to speak. Around the time they really started to take over and become more widely known, Screamo and Emo, as well as Hardcore where all different types of rock that were absolutley taking over alot as probably what most would call the main underground rock scenes, at that time anyways. And this period of time lasted many years, probably atleast 5 or more years I'd say, though if I think hzrd it may have been closer to 10 years or more. Some of my fsvorite bands and music in general where from around that time period, in general. And I guess you could probably also say they have some hardcore in there too. But when they were first starting out, like around these first albums they where referred to as Screamo, or along those lines, atleast in the underground scenes, now don't ask me what mainstream started calling them because honestly I don't think I remember much about that. Never really paid to much attention to the genre's they tried to say more underground like bands were or belonged too, lol, honestly because many times they were just wrong, or it was a more a mainstream generalized category that they would try to place all these different bands in. But if you actually were a fan that had been going to venues to see them, such as My Chemical Romance, that maybe held a couple hundred people, well you kinda just new better than to even pay attention to quite a few things, because well.... the underground scene/scenes, is all a world of its own. But trust me that is a very complicated thing all in its own, with all the different scenes, such as the hardcore scene, emo scene, screamo scene, metal scene, punk scene, etc.... (and trust me to a point that is just scratching the surface, like I said, a world of its own)
But back to what I was saying , as of now a days, I'm honeslty not even sure it is still even like that in those music scenes, for all I know it may be nothing like it was back than, or they may not really even still exist like they used too, truly its been a long while since than.
But with out a doubt, I loved the underground shows, etc...., I remeber going to more than one in one week sometimes, and this is all while I was still in high school. I remember telling my mom I couldn't go to school one time the day after a show, because I had headbanged so hard the night before I could barely move my neck the next morning. Definitley wasn't the greatest idea. Gotta seriously watch doing that stuff, can really hurt yourself. Don't think I believed that that was really actually that possible than or maybe was that I probably just wasn't as worried about it than, but I can definitely say that now. And thats also a whole other topic of its own, but just figured maybe I at least should throw out that bit of a warning, so to speak, just incase it might help someone in the future. But again I digress.....
As I was saying, I absolutely loved what I would call, more generally, the underground music scene.
Because there were well known rule, so to speak, maybe you could say codes of conduct, lol, but it was things such as that the band members weren't considered any better than those in the crowd. Everyone was on more of an equal standing. And respect was shown both ways.
And usually you could just walk up to the bands after the shows and say hi and good show etc...., maybe get them to sign a ticket or something, or not, depending, and maybe even talk a bit about the show, etc.., but than you just continued about your business ,and they did as well, and that was that. It was very cool and laid back. So honestly meeting bands at shows came to me, by a certain just pretty ordinardy. You didn't really see people screaming and freaking out about that type of thing, because usually it just wasn't anything like that. Don't get me wrong it was still a really awesome thing, but it was just more like everyday regular people getting to talk to one another for a moment and say hi and nice show, etc....
Because after all, we were just everyday regular people, lol. There wasn't really any overly special treatment one way or the other.
I remeber being at at show one time and I was out on the floor just watching one of the bands that were performing that night, actually I was towards the back of the pit, for some reason, can't exactly remember why, but I remember turning to my right and the lead singer, Will, from the band Aiden was standing there just chillin. I think I spoke to him a little, I think I said hi and nice show, or talked about something more casual, sorry an't remeber exactly, it has been way to long since than, lol. But like I said we talked a little and then I just went back to watching the band currently playing again. And I think this was after Aiden had already performed that night. So I think he was just chilling after their set. But it wasn't really an overly huge deal, they treated you with respect, like just a regular person at a show, and you did the same.
Honestly, I loved that part of the underground culture. Now again I have no idea if it is still like that now, but honestly I would hope so. The atmosphere alone was just incredible. Those are memories and experiences I will probably always hold incredibly dear to my heart.
P.S.
sorry for any bad grammar or misspellings, and that it turned into like a mini book, lol, did originally intend it to be, so again if its too long for some, again sorry, thats my bad, whoops😬 lol😌
You were talking about drums. Have you ever reacted to Tool? I can’t remember. If not, Danny Carey is one of the GOATS. Objectively. Check out Pneuma live drum cam and watch the man WORK 🔥
Gerard has done many interviews about how he is obsessed with death
