I could also imagine her boyish appearance is used to trick and lower the guard of people who don't expect a girl to so skilled; so thinking she's a boy, people called her Diamond Jack instead of something like Diamond Jackie. (which doesn't sound quite as cool imo.) Also, it may be so people take her a bit more seriously, but depending on the era that may not be a issue. Diamond Jack is also probably her thief name.
YESS, I HAVE WATCHED THIS ANIMATION AT LEAST 100 TIMES AND IT ALWAYS GETS BETTER. THANK you for doing this review, it deserves even more attention than it already has.
I have a theory that Rachel Kim intended to confuse people with the "Jack" name and the androgynous-looking (that I think is also intentional) design of Tia.
Why are so many people surprised that Jack is a she? It was at least not hidden that Jack is female. While the rest of the body looks androgynous on its own (The thin waists seem consistent within all characters.), the way the eyelashes stand up looks indistingushable female to me. Aren't eyelashes usuall a telltale sign for gender in animation anyway? I can understand that it flyes under the radar, given the liberal use of lines, but the eyebrows and eyelashes where consistent.
yeah but she wears a suit, has a guys name, acts alot like Lupin, and the hair looks similar to alot of Shonen characters. She also has fairly large hands, which is fairly masculine, and with alot of female characters in animation they typically have either broad hips and a narrow waist or if they have broad shoulders they have a narrow waist whereas Diamond Jack has fairly broad shoulders and a somewhat deep/broad chest (which i guess could be because of her breasts but since theres not really a bust line it just looks like she's got a male athletic build). She's got tons of masculine traits and only 2 or 3 female traits, and with anime or anime-esque animation you see male characters with tons of female traits so she just looks like a fairly average male anime character. Even the eyelashes arent really obviously female, since sometimes in animation large eyelashes and large eyes are used to convey innocence or idealism (i.e. wide eyed idealism) such as with characters like Spongebob, which fits since she's always got a smile plastered on her face even when she's being chased.
Arthas Menethil Her name's tia though :> In one of her sketches she has more of an hourglass shape, but I could only assume that Rachel changed it because it's easier to animate
One thing I'm surprised you didn't notice is that they may have drawn inspiration from a anime called detective Conan, which was about a man who despite being seen as a master thief stole from wealthy individuals because the stuff they stole were death traps for those people, and they ended up getting turned into a child and continued these "heists" despite the massive amounts of trouble they got in because of it
Why do people keep pointing out how surprised they are that Jack is a girl? That literally does NOT matter; the amazing animation is the main point of this video, so why not talk about that?
Yes, the jack is a female. Her name is Tia and the title is so because she is jacking the diamond. Jacking is a synonym to stealing. When she jumps in the back of the truck to go to the bridge, the singer says "I am not the *woman* ".
I'm so happy you made an episode about this cartoon. I really love its art-style. It is not only reminiscent of the titles you mentioned but also of some older animes and mangas, as well as of Osamu Tezuka's work in general. I really wish we got to see that style more often. Sadly, apparently, the industry went in a totally different direction. Lately, most of the popular animes look kind of the same.
Hey Scribble Kibble, If you ever get the chance, I was wondering if you give your thoughts on a certain Indie title that's making headlines. It's called on "Cuphead", and the artstyle used is very interesting. you should check it out when you get the chance.
funnily enough, I DID notice the hinges on the diamond the first time I watched Diamond Jack. But did you also notice that the lady playing the slots gets the sequence "diamond, bomb, bomb" on her machine? That didn't click for me until the second time I watched it. Very clever foreshadowing!
Another Easter egg that I definitely missed. When Jack entered the casino, and we get the shot of the woman on the slot machine. She gets a diamond and two bombs!
It's the first time I've discovered an animation before Crowne Prince talks about it. I'm so happy that you decided to review this one, it is such a good animation and yet receives so little attention. The soundtrack really is the icing on the cake (and I just accidentally destroy the replay button)
now that i think about it... another thing that is great about this, is that it goes against gender norms, while not being in your face about it... like ppl where confused on the gender of Jack for a reason.
I love this animation! The idea of jewel thieves that aren't bad guys is a favorite of mine (take Kaito Kid) and this animation tells the story so well! I noticed that Jack had feminine eyes, but I didn't know she was a girl until this video.
Why on earth are half of the comments in this comment section about *Jack* / Tia / Tina's gender?! OKAY! Here's some information to all of you people who want to comment "WHAAT? *JACK'S* A GIRL? I NEVER KNEW!": *Jack* , or Tia / Tina, is a *girl* . I'm not entirely sure why she is wearing a tuxedo in the animation, but my guess is for her to blend in with the setting. Her name isn't " *Diamond Jack* ", by the way, that's the title of the animation. Just because it's a title doesn't mean it's the main character's name. I would have honestly assumed it'd be obvious to many people watching the cartoon that *Jack* was a girl because of the eyelashes (which are often used in cartoons or animations to decipher genders) and her body shape/type. Apparently, I was wrong. -Thank you for reading this long paragraph. You can continue on with your day, now.-
also in the casino a row of slot machines say diamond then followed by a diamond slot machine rolls diamond, bomb, bomb so it is good to see all this effort put in
I'd also throw Rythm Thief's Phantom R in there as a character to compare Tia to as well. Honestly, my first impression of this animation was that it was an odd mix of Rythm Thief and Professor Layton.
I definitely got an Astro Boy vibe from this animation, but the animation is actually considerably better than the original Astro Boy :) no lazy freeze framing or lazy recycling
According to Rachel Kim, "Jack's" name is actually Tia. The title Diamond Jack is because Tia is a diamond thief and she is "jacking" the diamond.
Nah man she's getting rid of the bomb
I could also imagine her boyish appearance is used to trick and lower the guard of people who don't expect a girl to so skilled; so thinking she's a boy, people called her Diamond Jack instead of something like Diamond Jackie. (which doesn't sound quite as cool imo.) Also, it may be so people take her a bit more seriously, but depending on the era that may not be a issue. Diamond Jack is also probably her thief name.
LyricWulf thanks for explaining
Oh I didn't know
Thanks you for you piano stuff
_Diamond Jack is the only animation I keep coming back to, I love Jack so much and I wish Rachel made a show out of this idea_
Depressed Optimist
You clearly haven’t heard of Tarboy.
Actually he is a she and her name is “tia”
Me too
*_diamond jack is the best 3 minute animation ever._*
Tofu Tsukii you haven’t watched a lot of 3 minute animations then
Autismos You obviously don’t know how to judge animation but you can have your opinion even though I disagree.
You should check out Daria Cohen's "The Night" :)
It's a series

Random Minion most people thought it was in the same style as astroboy
Her name is Tia

A lot of guys actually tend to have longer eyelashes

Mom:did you eat all your food?
Me:
to see my friend's short film going around makes me proud that rachel's process and work has reached so many eyes
3:22 I did. And then when Jack ripped the top clean off at the end, I was all "Oooh, I saw what you.... wait, that still doesn't makes sense."
Her name is Tia.
Why do people keep pointing out how surprised they are that Jack is a girl? That literally does NOT matter; the amazing animation is the main point of this video, so why not talk about that?
JACK IS A GIRL??????
Her name is Tia.
Wait what

I need to learn how to do loose animation like this. I'm always such a perfectionist.
Kaciekk haha same but I try too and it takes a lot of my time
I thought the same thing about it being a mixture of Astro Boy and Lupin the 3rd.
Justin Mcgovern same!!!
Justin Mcgovern I thought so to
OMGosh thanks so much for featuring my art! I'm a huge fan!
One of my favorite animations, great work as always :0
Hey Scribble Kibble, If you ever get the chance, I was wondering if you give your thoughts on a certain Indie title that's making headlines. It's called on "Cuphead", and the artstyle used is very interesting. you should check it out when you get the chance.
Colby Mullenix
Yessss totally
Agreed.
Colby Mullenix I was just about to recommend that myself
Yeah, that'd be nice!
@Hay Heichi what are you talking about
Thank you so much for talking about this! I’m completely obsessed with this video and I’m so glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves.
I love everything about Jacks character design, and the fact that they hid her as a waitress
funnily enough, I DID notice the hinges on the diamond the first time I watched Diamond Jack. But did you also notice that the lady playing the slots gets the sequence "diamond, bomb, bomb" on her machine? That didn't click for me until the second time I watched it. Very clever foreshadowing!

Oh I love this so much! I couldn’t wait for you to review it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAS OBSESSED WITH THIS CARTOON THANK YOUUUUUU

love love love love LOVE Diamond Jack with all my heart. It inspired me to get into animation and is my favorite animated short of all time!
1:47
I thought that exactly but couldn't remember Lupin. I got Astro boy vibes tho.
I freaking LOVE diamond jack! So happy you talked about it!
Wow I wasn't the only person who thought they looked like Astroboy
I've been listening to this cartoon's music everytime I drew for the longest time XD.
At 1:27 in the animation, slot machine reads DIAMOND, BOMB, BOMB.
OMG YESSSS im so happy to see you talking about diamond jack!!!!
When I saw this, I swear, I almost broke my phone punching the link.
I wish diamond jack was a full animated series.
now that i think about it... another thing that is great about this, is that it goes against gender norms, while not being in your face about it... like ppl where confused on the gender of Jack for a reason.
YASS you did this AMAZING animation!
I love this animation! The idea of jewel thieves that aren't bad guys is a favorite of mine (take Kaito Kid) and this animation tells the story so well! I noticed that Jack had feminine eyes, but I didn't know she was a girl until this video.
I got huge astro boy vibes from it! Jack’s hairstyle just reminded me so much of Astro and the detective also was very reminiscent for me.
best video lightning fast vcr repair ever made
Holy crap. I can't believe I found account. I remember watching your videos when I was in middle school. Good to see you again
I love the design on the character his eyelashes just make him look idk just it's hard to explain its just amazing!
Why on earth are half of the comments in this comment section about *Jack* / Tia / Tina's gender?!

i like how they implied the diamond is a bomb later on the slot machine too hahaha
Diamond has hinges.
OPENS LIKE A JAR.
Thank you!!! I love this animation!
Yo, I totally noticed the white eye-fill before this! Good catch!
The music is pretty amazing *It is pretty reminiscent of Lupin the 3rd* _what an interesting case study_
Something I noticed when watching it a second time was that the slot machine shows a diamond and two bombs after the first spin.
This channel is criminally underated like I've been watching for a year and oh my god these have so few views
Diamond Jack actually uses a animation technique that is ease in ease out it's a really tough animation technique to master though.
Wait - Jack is a girl!? ... I need to re-evaluate some things in my life.
Dee Oh Dee reverse trap: they make you think you're gay for you to find out you aren't
Her name is actually Tia
Wait........
SHES A GIRL??
First time I've seen something before it's been on Scribble Kibble
yes, she's reviewing diamond jack!
You forgot on the machine it was a diamond then had bombs. It. Showed that the diamond had a bomb
I knew I wouldn't be alone in thinking of Tezuka-sensei's work, but I'd also add Cyborg 009 to the list.
I usually make my characters' gender impossible to tell too so I especially love this animation :D
I screamed when she called Tia "Jack".
Love this animation already!
you could make a video talking about the animation ''mermaids are jerks'' by ginjaninjaOwO
Yeah! I agree, although it is rather out dated.
I KNEW YOU WOULD MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT THIS!
Your barking at the wrong tree Mrs!
I loved the classic 70s-80s anime feel of the artstyle
WAS WAITING FOR THIS
Great cartoon. Liked it a lot.
also in the casino a row of slot machines say diamond then followed by a diamond slot machine rolls diamond, bomb, bomb so it is good to see all this effort put in
i love how the film makes you think.
Its an amazing animation and this song whoa i wish i could get my voice so high
your voice is so soothing!
Crowne, I think you should do a scribble kibble for Daria Cohen’s ‘The Night’ Fan Animation
>Jack's a girl
It's a trap!
N o
IceGodLike 77 she's a Reverse Trap
Her name’s Tia
How about shes just a girl that wears guy clothes and not call her something that sexualizes that? Its annoying and gross
I'm reminded of the trippy jack in the beanstalk nostalgia critic reviewed.
i LOVED this thing!
1:36 monopoly man astroboy and inspector gadget
this god like animation is getting reviewed by crowne.....
YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS
Hello! This is Chief John with... Diamond Jack!
Looking at Diamond Jack, it also teaches how to cut corners With animation.
2:04 I ship it ☆♡☆
Yeah I fell in love with this animation😅
I got high Lupin III vibes from this animation
I love this animation!
Wait....Jack...she?...WHAT?!
I thought diamond jack was a dude my b
Insightful and really engaging!
Conveniently it moves at a good pace, meaning it's difficult to notice any of these drawing errors, unless you seek them out perhaps
The diamond has hinges but.... Tia twists it open later in the animation
there is only one word to describe all this
Y E S
YES!!! I LOVE DIAMOND JACK!!!
Wait, an album of sketches of Diamond Jack is made for free? Where can I download it? 😁
I love this animation
I'd also throw Rythm Thief's Phantom R in there as a character to compare Tia to as well. Honestly, my first impression of this animation was that it was an odd mix of Rythm Thief and Professor Layton.
I was hoping you'd make a video on this
YESS YOU DID IT
I definitely got an Astro Boy vibe from this animation, but the animation is actually considerably better than the original Astro Boy :) no lazy freeze framing or lazy recycling
