I see these a lot in screenshots and then people are like "They have the budget, they have money, and people give this shit praise for being so well animated" when its a smear frame, say in Yuri On Ice when Yurio is ice skating you can find a screenshot with elongated arms. It's funny to look at but anyone who knows shit knows that those scenes are needed to create the scene and make the animation look far better. It gets annoying when people take screenshots of smear frames and claims them to be "bad animation" and question the budget and how good the animation is as a whole.
I mean,if you want to you can.I did and I’m possibly the least motivated person on this planet.Your animation will never be the greatest ever when you just start so don’t be demotivated. If you want to animate,do it.Dont just sit there and say,”I’m not good enough,I’ll wait until I’m good at it” because you will never be good unless you try.If you don’t think you want to do animation anymore,so be it.It’s your life and a couple of doodles on a screen can’t change that.
If you´ve watched one punch man, my hero academia II or anything by yukata nakamura you should have seen them. An impact frame is when an action/impact is so powerful it rips the following one or two frames from their colors and/or distorts them to nothing but energetic scribbles, but yukata nakamura goes totally overboard and it is beautiful.
Now that I've secured a front seat in the comments section, I'd like to say that I'm glad you finally got around to smear frames. It's something of a mystery to me to get right, so I'm glad you broke it down.
Yeah! Smear frames! I did a video about this animation technique too. ^u^ Fantastic job as always, great job explain the importance of the line of motion!
A good example of a smear frame in animation can be seen in the beginning of Pokémon ☀🌒 in its first episode as the camera zooms in on Ash and his Pikachu riding a Sharpedo. The velocity of the Sharpedo launching Pikachu up from a lowered position generates a smear frame that can be clearly seen, albeit for approximately 83⅓ milliseconds at most, like Crowne mentioned.
I've been spotting these frames since I was BORN. I love smear frames to death, and many of my short movement animations (that I will never show the Internet world) revolve around them. Honestly, drawing those specific frames are kinda funny, cause it's odd to see your character look so abnormal. I'm glad you talked about them man! Keep up the good work!
Where I first saw smear frames was in Chuck Jones cartoons like the "Dover Boys" I love this when this technique is used as well as when it leads to slapstick such as the character moving fast into a wall.
A few things to note is you should also use smear frames carefully, you can’t just smear everything (unless you either have a cartoonish like style or you want to convey your character is very light or squishy). When there’s a smear frame, it generally means there’s some sort of very fast motion. Different smears can also mean different things. If you study certain cartoons like Animaniacs, stretched out proportions are used for very fast movement, lines are used to convey somewhat fast movement, and no smears are used for slow movements.
Smear frames are honest to god hilarious to draw and pause on. I remember watching Steven Universe and pausing on a particularly hilarious frame as two gems unfused, and drawing smear frames just makes the process of animation a little more fun.
You did a really good job voicing this video. You sound genuinely happy to talk about this subject! It's nice to see someone on freakin' UA-cam being genuine!
Scooby Doo uses smear frames really well. It's kinda what makes their style iconic. The running away scenes in particular. You can see them in the Scooby Doo inspired Ghost by mystery skulls. I use windows movie maker to slow them down so I can see how they're done because it goes frame by frame.
I’m a small animator but I just have to say . THANK YOU . You are soooo helpful to me and many other people . You help me improve everyday and I can’t thank you enough.❤️❤️❤️
Hiiiiiii. This is totally wacky, but I shared this video with my animation teacher, and he liked it so much that he shared it with the whole class?? I didn’t expect it, but he thought the content and way it was presented was fantastic. So, good job!
They really are the best. I imagine there is starting to be some codification on the technique though. Just like any other aspect of animation, you can do it in many different ways, but there are some commonalities to smear frames that I hope you might explore in more depth in the future.
It look a bit strange to have the witch girl suddenly just stop at point B. I suggest maybe adding a frame slightly past point B and then back so it involves the inertia of the movement? (Like when you animate a blink, and to create a bit of a pop you'd make the eye slightly more open before bringing it to normal size.)
In certain conditions where your main source of light is an LED lamp, the flickering makes you see multiples of the moving object instead of the regular motion blur. Shit looks surreal
Oh, I actually remember watching Little Witch Academia with my youngest cousin! After watching the movie Your Name some of my family and friends are trying to get me into anime but I just can't seem to bring myself to like it quite as much.
It's even more fun with 3D. You have to make entirely new objects for it usually. You can just use motion blur algorithms and tactics (though what is the fun in that) but I have the most fun seeing people make entirely new shapes for the purpose. Lego Batman is my favorite one in recent memory (not a lot of examples really exist)as it not only uses newfound objects in order to accomplish the task of smear framing but they try as often as they can to use the real life lego equivalent parts to make the smear frames. I find it a bit amusing.
As I just told my older brother as I sent him a screenshot of a smear frame I just drew, "smear frames come from a lawless land where chaos reigns supreme."
hey crowne! You'd be a really good animation teacher in an art school! btw your basically the only reason I know how to animate...and I have no materials to animate sadly.

Just tell them to animate something fast on as low a budget possible. they'll figure out smear frames or die trying.
It's a smear frame, it's not suppose it be pretty :/
I can't even animate. I just love the way you teach and stuff.
wow..... 164 likes????..... okay.....
BlueRose 🍕 wow cant animate myself but that kinda inspired me to try😆

Can you talk about fighting scenes? Like the stereo typical cloud with things poking out and cat sounds.
Everybody is like : "smear frames are the best, ..." and I'm like : "man those look so hard to do..." XD
I managed to do one, and it was very visible HAHAHAHA
Jk, it was pretty easy to do.
Just draw it between the two transparent frames in the middle, mutilated
smear frames are so freaking fun to draw and make an animation look so much more dynamic, i love them!
The loop smear in the stop motion "Bump in the night" is multiple puppets in certain frames, always loved playing those larts in slowmo
You did a really good job voicing this video. You sound genuinely happy to talk about this subject! It's nice to see someone on freakin' UA-cam being genuine!
The smear frames in Yuri On Ice are the best smear frames and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
Very fun to draw, very fun to watch.
Smear Frames are the perfection of animation world.
Thank you so much! I love doing this and i never knew smear frames existed until now!
Yea I'm looking into animation and smear frames sounded a bit intimidating, this really cleared things up. 👍
eddsworld honestly had way too many of these when paul animated the episodes

*BREAKING NEWS:*
Dog teaches beginner animators about smear frames.
You are a good doggo, thank you.
I love how they put some your your frames all throughout their own animation

I love how the mouth is still bing XD
I totally freaked when she brought up Little Witch Academia!! I love it :) Also smear frames ARE the best!

I love smear frames! It's always a pleasure drawing them too, they're silly but effective.
Smear frames is what gives the Steven Universe fandom cursed images of me
lol

This was the reason why rubberhose animation faded out of history

The beauty that is smear frames

O gosh yes
YES MY DUDE
I’ve been a little obsessed with Becky Prim for a while.
these videos are very helpful for teaching me about animation.
i recently tried out smear frames for a map part and they are the best thing ever
Smear frames are the best part of animations. Actually when you pause it at just the right moment.
I accidentally paused on a smear frame in konosuba and It was the funniest thing
I accidentally did that on spongebob and his arm looked like a shovel
I can tell you friggin loved this episode because of your voice
If I knew about smear frames before this I would have completed SO many more animations
sees favorite anime in thumbnail
*AWW HELL YEAH*
I officially love smear frames :3 (Wow, you've really upped it on the animation this time! Way to go! :O)
I love how I caught one of your smear frames
Puppet only programs make this hard. Means you gotta make a sprite of smear frames of every limb.
Oml the smear frames at 0:41 were absolutely amazing XD
as someone who is practicing animation, smear frames are my favorite thing to do!
This video is gold.
As I just told my older brother as I sent him a screenshot of a smear frame I just drew, "smear frames come from a lawless land where chaos reigns supreme."
Can you please talk about all of the animations that Gorillaz has ever made? I would like to see your opinions on it X3
I would absolutely watch a show that was only smear frames
or better yet, a show where everything is animated normally except one character who's always animated like they're in a smear frame
The few seconds of animation here!!!!
So great
1:00 - 1:06
I think that on the thumbnail (and 1:11), that girl with blue eyes looks kinda cute
Oh my god my brain is amazed! And it's helping me with ideas for animation! And my god I'm happy that I saw an example from one punch man!
I'm glad these no one way to draw smear frames cause I was worried about it
that thumbnail is the best thing omg
YESSSS LITTLE WITCH ACADEMIAAA ITS MY FAVORITE OMGGG

I love smear frames because they look amazing.

I just love how smear frames look. So distorted...and hilarious
I recommend that after the smear is that to end slowly before Line B or also slowly move from the start
Hey there Crowne Prince! I absolutely love your series! Keep up the amazing work!
This video made me want to try out smear frames. And they were a lot ‘o fun to draw! ^^
I'll have to try some smearing myself.
The art in Witch Acedemia is perfect for smears
Jhonny bravo was my favorite show as a kid
