    On a very cold and wet weekend, Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 #611 powered "The Roanoker" excursion between Greensboro, NC and Roanoke, VA. This was a repeat of last year's (2016) popular trip which traveled over the former Southern mainline from Greensboro to Hurt, VA, and then headed west on the former Virginian Railway to Roanoke. The rain really added to the atmosphere as 611 put on an amazing show both days.

    I worked for Southern and NS railroads for 25 years and worked around the 611 several times, this engine was a living, fire breathing, steam blowing beast. that lonesome one of a kind whistle and all those moving parts working in unison to produce incredible power. when the 611 came to town everything stopped and everyone got out of the way as it passed.

    I myself am from Russia, but I admire the railway rolling stock of both America and Europe. In America, there is so much variety of both the railway train itself and the types where it can be photographed. We also have many places in Russia, but the very diversity of the railway rolling stock of its condition leaves much to be desired. You have a great legacy to take care of it. Greetings from Siberia from the employee of railway lines

      so, it is the same whistle that being use on big boy and living legend?

    That may be the best 611 takeoff I've ever seen. 611 is so powerful that wheelslip is usually a problem on launch, but this engineer nailed it - not a trace of wheelslip, and he did it going up a rather obvious grade, too. Top-flight videography, and editing in documenting this trip - I really enjoyed watching and wishing I was trackside myself (I don't really have a "bucket list" per se, but seeing 611 in action would be on it if I had one).

    Man that shot from 2:53 to 3:20 is apocalyptic, like something from a movie. The roaring bellow of its whistle, the smoke blocking out the trees, all it needed was the diesel on the side to be lifted up from it's tracks and thrown in the air.

    At about 3:50, the sound of the approaching steam engine is much different than in the earlier footage. I found myself saying, "It's chugging-out," out loud to myself. I then realized I said chugging-out often when referring to anything, or anyone fast when I was a child in West Des Moines, Iowa, 60 or 65 years ago. Chugging-out was a part of my lexicon then, as steam locomotives were on TV shows, in movies, and on the rails. Everyone knew exactly what chugging-out meant back in the day. ... Thanks for the trip back down memory lane with this video. It's truly awesome.

    • @thunderbird1921
      @thunderbird1921 11 місяців тому

      Here's the crazy part: Nobody knows for sure just how fast 611 can go. One of her sister engines was taken up to 110 MPH during testing, but if I remember correctly it was during World War II and the engine tested didn't have full streamlining yet (611, built in 1950, had full streamlining from the day she rolled out of the shop). As a result, full streamlining might make her even faster, perhaps 115-120. But no one can say for sure, as she's never been run at "full throttle".
