She ain't called the Queen for nothin'; most powerful 4-8-4 ever built and still running. Even if you don't see her in person, you can hear and feel the power when she's pulling from a stop if you have good speakers or headphones.
I would agree with you. I heard that Virginia does not have much coal reserves left anymore, I'm talking about the reserves along the old Virginian Railroad
I could watch this legendary lady roll for hours. I've caught glimpses of her several times rolling from Roanoke to Bedford and I would love to take a trip aboard her someday.
I rode behind her in a caboose on July 7, 2016 in Spencer, NC. I still have a ticket or two from the event. I pray to Christ that someday I will rode again. I can imagine my grandmother smiling down on me from heaven with tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. Christ be with you, Nana 🙏✝️ (1942-2021)
You won't see the high profile locomotives to the west working this hard. Hat is off to the original folks in Roanoke and those in Spencer for bringing her back.
Yeah I am wondering where the 611 gets her coal from, I heard the coal seams near Roanoke are no longer entiful this year, the state only mines 2 percent of total US coal
It's too bad that Wick Morman left Norfolk Southern because that pretty much doomed the "21st Century Steam Program." What Norfolk Southern needs is a chairman and a head of the Board Of Directors that are both die-hard steam fans.
The steam program was a limited time run from the start. It just happened to co-incide with Wick leaving the helm. NS will not be back in the steam business anytime soon, but that won't stop groups from being able to move stuff over the road. There is no true money in steam excursions for class 1's, it's all just good PR and some solid nostalgia. Coaling towers are a pointless capital investment, given the lack of equipment that would be using them, not to mention refueling is limited to one place. A gondola + excavator can go anywhere, for far cheaper.
steam excursions for class 1s is timeless and costs usually up to 600 dollars a ticket, so why there wouldn't be any money in it is beyond me. I was just sorry to see the original steam program end, and to see anything like that again, somebody as dedicated as me has to post on their facebook page asking them to hire coal-burning steam loco fanatics on to the board of directors and as chairman, and I will be doing that shortly.
@@2011traincrazy After you consider insurance (couple hundred grand at current rates), locomotive and crew expenses, those coach loads barely leave enough profit. Not to mention the trains that are held up in the process, often with a payload worth multiple times that of the entire excursion consist. Railroading is a business at the end of the day, and companies do the best to look out for their bottom line. Sure steam is an excellent PR and nostalgia tool, but it is far from a cash cow on the big stage.
I guess some die-hard steam fans should get together and figure out how to MAKE it a cash-cow, because the original program would still be going today if I were the chairman like Robert Claytor. When did insurance start going up anyway? If we had another team like the Claytor brothers I am sure they wouldn't give a dang, but just outta curiosity, when and how did insurance start going up?
I'm not a train enthusiast, but that's gotta be one of the nicest engines I've ever seen.

30+ years later (age 39), hearing the whistle still gives me chills and brings out the inner-child in me. ♥
Hooter whistles are my favorite! Imagine being out in the old days as a kid walking along tracks at night! The whistle would be intimidating!
She is one beautiful elegant lady and her heart beat is awesome. Thanks for a great video 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
My favorite locomotive, the N&W 611 & I LOVE that deep whistle on her too 😊😊
I avoided catastrophe.

Wow, in the 1940's Virginian and West Virginia must have sounded like the battle grounds of pissed Tyrannnosaurs!

611 the queen of steam

How plentiful are the Virginian coal reserves this year?
A Steam Extravaganza event at the Steam Railroading Institute with 1225, 765, 425, 1551 and 611 can happen in the future.
Maybe
Awesome video
Hope we get some excursions next year
Matt Dibenedetto Fan corona called. It said no.
Connor and Caitlin from Thomas the tank engine in a nutshell
what is that sound the 8099 makes when the axles pass by the camera? the whirring sound?
Traction motors
SCL3618 but why do they make that awesome sound?
@@trainlover123trainsrock That's just the sound of that motor under load and operating normally when power is being applied.
@@SCL3618 dude, thank you for helping me learn what that noise was 2 years ago. I’ve learned more knowledge regarding certain sounds since then. 🫂
My favorite steam locomotive next to big boy and flying scotsman
Love the pacing shot at 29:50
looks like a bullet outta hell
29:48 is pure gold ☝️
So why wasn't 6900 run with the other diesels?
What’s the chugging sound when she’s sitting still?
That's the sound of the air pump.

If you listen very closely during the start of the video you can faintly hear the Dispatcher giving n&w 611's crew orders
(The radio is close to the throttle console)

You could call it that, seeing a steam engine like this is very exhilarating for most people, including myself.
