2000 Ford Ranger A/C Stop Blowing Cold After it gets warm outside, or just Whenever

  • my a/c on my 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0 V6 truck decided to start acting up. it would randomly stop blowing cold air at first. i would accelerate hard and it would come back on. Then it decided to stop blowing cold air when it was hot or warm outside. Its probably the clutch plate, that is worn down with age. i check all the fuses, replaced the clutch relay, and checked all the vacuum lines for leaks. This is a quick fix to keep it working. After i took it on a road test, the A/C worked great, going on a week now with cold A/C. Hope this helps someone out there.

    Unlike most manufacturers, Ford AC systems don't have an 'AC' manual over-ride switch -- or at least they didn't in the past -- so the AC compressor is always 'active' in Defrost, Defrost/Floor, and Bi-Level modes, meaning it engages any time the cabin temperature exceeds the temp setting. This suggests to me that Ford AC clutches wear more quickly than others.

      I'm not saying it's a big problem, because they do still last a long time. But I'd never had an AC clutch wear out or fail, in almost 45 years of owning maybe 30 cars, many of which had a _lot_ of miles on them, until my current 2001 Lincoln Town Car with ~130k miles.
      Because of that, I hadn't considered this issue. My AC clutch does cycle on and off, so I had dismissed it as the potential problem -- didn't consider that it might be slipping -- but now I'm almost positive your suggestion will work on my car. So thanks very much!

    Hey Raul, your ranger videos have been a big help.
    Do you happen to remember if the speed of the vehicle would have any impact on the cold air before you fixed this?
    Currently my truck blows warm when it’s hot outside, but when I start moving at medium to high rate of speed it starts blowing cold. I recently did a new fan clutch but I’m not sure it helped

    • @raiderman28

    • @ryanwalsh5305
      @ryanwalsh5305 2 роки тому

      Your AC Condenser is what the freon moves through. The air blowing across the condenser cools the freon gas back down to a liquid. It's aheat Exchanger essentially. . Your cooling fan whether electric or clutch driven won't engage as much during movement. It should however engage when you aren't moving, or moving slow under heavy load.

      You are correct . But finding a replacement clutch is not that easy unless you have a shop that repairs them. I did this a few years ago and its still working great. Its not going to wear faster, because it wasn’t touch the clutch, thats why the a/c wasn’t working. Because it was already wore. This is just a quick fix. But its lasted me at least a few years and still working

      @raiderman28  2 роки тому

      If the compressor is disengaging the problem starts there. You work your way from there backwards. What make the a/c compressor engage?? Clutch plate, control panel, solenoid valve etc. you have to check all those things that make it engage to see which one is not functioning or is intermittent. I usually push on the front of the clutch plate and if it engages the clutch and starts working, could be a bad compressor. If your telling me that the system has been charged… some times if you over charge the system, it will cause the system to do exactly what its doing. I had a old civic that had everything new installed for the air conditioning. It was converted over to the newer refrigerant,and the shop tech overcharged the system. ( but according to the book it was charged correctly. So it work great for about 20 minutes, then hot air came out. I would wait and then the a/c would start working again. After 20 minutes or so, hot air again. I took it back to the shop and the other old man who was the real a/c guy ended up telling his tech ( who was his son) that he probably overcharged the system, and over filled it. He said that the conversions take alittle less gas than recommended. They took out some refrigerant and it worked perfectly
      Now, this was an old 1987 honda civic, not a ranger. But maybe, there might be something there. I would take it to a different air conditioning place one that is reputable.

      @@raiderman28 I got it loose and took the washer out, the gap got significantly tighter. It took a bit more effort trying to pry the screw driver after the washer. But I got it, I topped it off with refrigerant and so far so good. The clutch doesn’t engage and disengage every 30 seconds. Even if I put more refrigerant, it would do it before. But now, it’s doesn’t do it as often and the compressor stays engaged a lot longer. Tomorrow afternoon will be the real test! Thank you so much! This video helped alot

      If you know how the clutch works it makes perfect sense.
      Or just buy a new compressor
