  • The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is the newest high performance version of the Taycan and has destroyed the Model S Plaid lap record at the Nürburgring. Mind you, the Taycan GT in this clip is a production car, but it has a very specific racing package and the interior stripped out. So, although it is not completely fair to compare both, it is still a mighty impressive feat from Porsche.
    Tesla might be able to do a bit better, because the Plaid lap had a lot of coasting done and at the main Dottinger straight it did not go for the full 200mph top speed, to save the battery from overheating.
    So Elon, where is the Plaid+ to take back the lap record?

    Lets be honest, these cars arent in the same category anymore, the Porsche is THAT much faster. Only a tad slower than the Rimac, which has twice the power, and they didnt even use attack mode in the Taycan.

      Performance tests in Germany confirm it blows even the fastest McLaren, 1000 kg lighter, out of the water on every track.

      @@hasangenc2922 They've driven the Taycan around the Nürburgring and the energy recuperation is light years ahead of the Teslas. And the Taycan Turbo GT can use the powerboost for 10s straight ... with a wait time of 4s between boosts. This is a game changer and it is just the beginning. The newest iteration of the Taycan Turbo GT also has 1200PS

      You are comparing lap times of two specific cars, not their history or cachet.
      For that same reason you could not compare Renault and Ferrari, but Renault has beaten Ferrari in F1 a few times.

    I mean the Plaid barely edged out the Taycan Turbo S which was older, heavier and has 400hp less. So it was clear that the updated Taycan would absolutely destroy the Plaid. It may be a luxury sedan, but its still a Porsche.

      The Plaid is still based on the original Model S from 2012, the Taycan was launched in September 2019.
      Otherwise: yes. The Model S is a big barge that happens to be quick, the Taycan was developed as a sports car from the ground up.

      @@StevenPeeters Let me rephrase that: the Model S was first and foremost built around passenger comfort and safety, whereas the Taycan was developed as a sports car from the ground up. It has a more recent and more purpose-built base to start from. The fact that it took Porsch 4,5 years to catch up with Tesla is a bit embarassing in my eyes. But still quite the feat from the Germans!

      @@berttroubleyn3475 it took Porsche not even a year to catch uü to this lap time, which makes the Taycan even more impressive. The lap record of the Plaid track pack was last year in june. Before that, the Taycan turbo S was the record holder. THATS embarassing, that Tesla needed a car that has 400hp more, 200lbs less weight AND a track pack to catch the Taycan.

    The regular tesla model s plaid posted a 7:35 .. the taycan turbo s posted a 7:33 .. porsche beat the plaid when both used street tires . tesla "Track pack" cheated it had to use track tire semi slicks (GoodYear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3Rs) that are only used for track times not for street use to beat the porsche taycan,panamera turbo s, m5cs,m3cs, and some other 4 door sedans that all used STREET TIRES. The tesla plaid has 1,000hp and the other cars i named have 400hp less then the plaid. Yet when they all used street tires those cars beat it. The semi slicks on the track pack plaid alone shaves off 10-15 sec. The track pack then posted a 7:25
    Think how embarrassing that is that a car with 1000hp couldn't beat a 400hp less taycan. BMW/Porsche design and handling is on another planet.
    Elons ego got hurt so he had to use tires that no production car has ever came with. Everything about tesla is a marketing scheme. They even recieved a lawsuit for lying about their range estimates 😂😂 their 0-60 times uses rollout 😂😂

    Tesla spent two years just to achieve that lap time. Can you imagine how many tires they must have burned through? And yet, they only managed a seven and a half-minute time. It’s insanely fast with a high limit Lat G, but it’s probably the second most difficult car to push to the edge after the RUF Yellow Bird. A very dangerous challenge. For a startup, that's pretty incredible.🎉

      First of all, Tesla is not a startup. They grew past that point 10 years ago. Secondly, it is the battery technology/cooling that is holding it back, not the dynamics of the car. Keep in mind that this is a comfortable family car that can take 5 people across the entire continent. AND it can attack the Nürburgring as well.

      @@StevenPeeters In the mass production automotive industry, being around for 10 years is hardly different from being a startup. Even 20 or 30 years is still startup level compared to other companies. Of course, Tesla has achieved much more due to its immense capital power. The Model S Plaid is fast and generally comfortable, but you can't take it to the track without the track package. Actually, if you don't want to make your wife a widow, you shouldn't take it to the track at all. After seeing skid marks nearly 200 meters long from a Tesla Model S Plaid on a 4 km handling circuit, I don't think I could drive that car again. At 120 mph, when doing full braking, it felt similar to a Hyundai Grandeur equipped with a single-piston brake. Also, driving a 500 km journey to the Nürburgring with a family of five on semi-slick tires, having to listen to the helicopter-like noise of the tires for two hours, would be a nightmare. Of course, thanks to PARS, the Taycan is more comfortable than the BMW i5.

      @@DerSpeziell I fully agree and have said many times that one shpuld never take the Plaid to any trwck without upgrading to the ceramic brakes. They are extremely good, but also extremely necessary. And the official set comes with a software update that transforms the car in track mode, while being cheaper than aftermarket 3rd party sets that don’t get that update that also unlocks the top speed.

    Coasting from the plaid. I think the Taycan has a better cooling system which explains why it is better on the track despite being heavier and doing worse in the 1/4 mile.

    I mean, the Porsche is a track version with bucket seats and no rear seats at all. It weighs less and has a bit more power at 1093 hp. However, it costs three times more than the Plaid. In my opinion, not only because I own a Plaid, but the winner here is the Plaid in terms of performance, price, and practicality.

      Sure, if you factor in practicality, nothing can beat the S. But that is not the point. Elon was bragging about the overall production EV record, so now that has been beaten by the Rimac Nevera and now the Porsche as well. We just need to recognise that what Porsche has done here, is incredible. Let's just be happy that this "race" is going on as it benefits us all in the long run.

      @@nikolalefterov7472 Yes, interesting times, we are living in. 18 sec at the Ring is a lightyear in real world. So MS will not match it anyhow. Maybe this is Elon´s motivation to get the Roadster back on stage again recently. Has nothing to do with business, but is fun to watch the ongoing competition anyhow 🙂.

The Porsche here is specially crafted for the track, has almost no practicality, and has about three years of newer technology. This is an expected result. Now we need to see the answer from Tesla.

      Yes, agreed, but at the end of the day, Taycan beat the Model S. And a GT3RS, with half the power, whopped both of their butts and could proceed to do so for laps and laps on end. Give credit where it's due. And if we're nitpicking, Tesla's lap was set with a big diffuser, spoiler, on stickier tires (Cup 2 R vs Trofeo RS)@@nikolalefterov7472

    Der Tesla war dafür speziell konfiguriert und so nicht Straßentauglich! Der Porsche hatte das Weissach Package und sie mussten einen schweren Überrollbügel zusätzlich einbauen (deshalb haben sie versucht an anderen Stellen Gewicht zu sparen). Trotzdem, der Porsch war Straßentauglich!

      P.S. der Porsche ist mit dem Weissachpaket auch alles andere als alltagstauglich.
      Und der Tesla ist als 5 Sitzer Limousine angetreten während der Porsche sogar auf 2 Sitzer Sportwagen reduziert wurde.
      Ich bin Porsche Fan und mein absolutes Traumauto ist ein 911 Turbo, aber ich finde es extrem beeindruckend was Tesla für eine Performance in einer Reiselimousine bietet die nicht mal annähernd als Sportwagen konstruiert wurde.

    I’m a Porsche fan and convinced that car is more sorted and the better handling car, but saying that Tesla plaid handling is a mess or bad probably never sat in one 😉

      Porsche is an extremely good handling car. But after a certain point you cannot enjoy the acceleration, especially on roads here in UK. It is nice to have a car which accelerates to 100kmphr in around 4 seconds but got gears and sound.

    Lol that Teslas handling is such a mess. Its like an overpowered Ford Fusion, looks like one too. The Taycan is a sedan but handles like a sportscar. Tesla could never.

      The Plaid with the track pack handles beautifully. The Porsche has more downforce with that ugly huge wing. That is what makes a difference in cornering speed. Tesla has plaid with active aero several years ago with a huge active wing that was basically the trunk lit, but did not bring that to market (yet).

    I’m thinking about the track pack - I assume you still recommend it? I plan on tracking it this summer. How’s the wear on your braking system now that you’ve had it for a while and also tracked with it? Thanks! Subscribed

      Do NOT take the Plaid on the track without the track pack! I did like 5-6 laps of the Ring and several top speed runs. Brakes are still as new. Installing the track pack rims but with road legal PS4S tires this week.

      @@StevenPeeters cool thanks for the info. I’m getting some custom forged wheels made from Aerolarri (have a set on my MXP too). So once they arrive, I’ll get the new wheels installed on my current PS4s + get the track package installed at the same time. I could put the stickier tires on the 21 stock wheels, but… I gotta see if I’m gonna track it more than just once in a blue moon. Thanks again for the info

      @@StevenPeeters I just really want the vehicle to handle better on normal roads, I need it sportier and tighter. That’s what I really want to accomplish getting the track package - I don’t want to drive in track mode on the streets, so I’m hoping that the programming still applies for plaid mode? I need it to handle better, it’s too fast to be this loose and unsure 🫤

    I don't understand why the Plaid is not shipped with high spec brakes as standard - it would sell anyway on performance figures. Porsche would never ship a car with anything less since they take pride in their products and heritage - obviously a different mindset.....

      Because 95% of owners will never need ceramic brakes. They are totally unnecessary for daily driving. This Porsche is not a daily driver but a pure track car

    There is the question of WHO drive in Porsche and WHO drive in Tesla. The Porsche driver is much faster. Nurburgring is not easy track, and the result Its about driving skills also.

      Porsche driver is LARS KERN - one of the fastest drivers on Nurburgring, who win so many times there in races. And at the same time the TESLA Plaid driver is not a driver from TOP10 or TOP30 on Nurburgring race track. Its so big different in driving skills, you can looks from first turns, the difference in piloting style is huge.

      The Porsche blows the Tesla out of the water either way and with the same driver. I have watched performance laps of the Porsche on German channels and it blow EVERYTHING out of the water and on the Nordschleife only 2s slower than a Chiron ... and with the latest iteration of this car with 1200HP that gap should close as well.

    Did that Plaid have the track package? Looked kinda slow - I'd have thought it would accelerate better, having noch much more weight and quite a bit more power than the Taycan.

      it is the new taycan turbo gt with weissach package , way less weight than the plaid , same horsepower (1019) , and made only for track cause has 2 bucket seats

    Some here argue the Model S is the better daily car (more room, more comfort) and that it is 2,5 times cheaper. Or that it took Porsche 4,5 years, a 2,5 times higher retail price and the loss of rear seats and all other basic passenger comfort to beat the Plaid, which is all very true. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a formidable feat from Porsche. Here's to exciting times ahead!

      I agree. Whatever suits your driving style and how you'll use it at least everyone has a choice. I can appreciate the Taycan for what it is but the MS LR suits me better for a daily driver.

      I own a Tesla. It is not at all comfortable at high speeds. I would like to buy a petrol car with gears which is much slower as my next car. Dont get me wrong. It is super quick. and extremely good in the city.

      Actually most you listed isn't _"very true"_ 😅
      1. It didn't even take Porsche *one* year to beat the Plaid, which did the lap to beat the Taycan in 2023. In fact, it took Tesla four years and illegal compound to beat the Taycan.
      2. The Taycan beat the Plaid by 18 seconds, and the difference between the Weissach and regular version - according to Lars Kern - is *at most* a second at Laguna Seca.
      3. What do you mean by _"comfort"?_ Because the active suspension is ridiculously overpowered in both, sporty and comfy directions. Stripped interior? Still 20 kg heavier than the regular Weissach version because of the cage.
      Additionally, may I mention that the price isn't only defined by performance? The 2024 Taycan charges *a lot* quicker than any Tesla to date, with over 300 kW above 60%. It also comes with the better light, NVH, ergonomics, quality, service etc.
      In the end, the current Taycan Turbo GT *without* Weissach package is the most complete EV you can currently buy 🤷

    Comparing Tesla Model S Plaid with track pack with Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach is like comparing a VW GTi "edition” with a Renault Megane RS Trophy. They are completely different cars which serve different purposes. Taycan Turbo S would be a more fair comparison to the plaid. Would be curious to see how that would be around the ring.

      Taycan turbo S is older than the Plaid, so....the GT is the competitor.

    Tesla did not use full power because its battery or motors would overheat and that is why there was such a big difference in the time achieved. The Porsche Taycan managed it in one go and improved its cooling to a new level that can cool the car during the entire lap. The first Taycan Turbo S had weak cooling and overheated after about 4 minutes of driving on the Nurburgring

    I think it is just normal that the Porsche beats a "sedan "tesla. I find it impressive that they try to beat a sedan family car, with a shaped sports car. It just tells how impressive the tesla is, not the Porsche. Now let's take the porsche with the family on ski trip. Oh you can't it is to small. The people who says oh 1000 hp car beaten by 400 Hp car, Let's tell formula 1 drivers to reshape there car into a sedan.

      Yes people buy a Porsche because it has a look of a sedan family car haha good one . I would always choose Porsche as second car because it is sports car, and to have some fun. For daily use give me the Tesla model S. Again you can't compare those 2 car. @@CLSTRN911
