- The Ford Shelby GT500 and BMW M4 go head-to-head in our latest video in our U-Drag series. In this drag race video, Ryan ZumMallen is back on the track with two powerful muscle cars: the 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 and the 2022 BMW M4. Which of these muscle cars has the quickest drag race time and the most horsepower? Is the Shelby GT500's top speed higher than the M4's? Ryan covers all of these questions and more in the fourth video in our new series we dubbed "U-Drags." It's a battle of American muscle vs. German muscle in today's drag race of the Ford Shelby GT500 vs. BMW M4.
What is a U-Drag race?
A U-Drag race consists of both cars heading down the track like a standard drag race, then braking hard, flipping around and then heading back.

@@ViolentChild22 because they own the GT500 and getting cars out of the rental fleet can be hard and unpredictable.
Also another suggestion for a race, although it's more abstract. Crossover versus it's traditional equivalent.
So TLX vs RDX, odyssey versus pilot, x5 versus 5 series, panamera vs cayenne. Ect.
UDRAG should be a standard of performance measurement by everyone. This is brilliant.
Its not accurate because the time of braking is different for every race , race 1 bmw brakes early

I'd start with the Porsche line up, start with a base 911 and work up from there to see how much Porsche you gotta buy to beat the Shelby. Keep up the good work, love these races. Just wish they were longer.
You’ll need a Turbo. GT3 will come close tho.

This is actually a really cool way to compare two cars performance. Race from a dig, hard on the brakes into a long hard corner, acceleration out of a corner into essentially a roll race. What a great idea, love it, gives you an overall feel for the vehicles performance.

Broke early and slowly compared to gt500 broke at the last second …

Yep. Not that I think the results would have been different, but it would have been closer if the M4 didn't brake so early in the first race.
@OJDUDE the GT500 brakes and corners better than the M4 comp in reality, it's all about timing
They have to cater to the American Muscle crowd. The Stang made up most of the lost field under breaking.
Lets see how fast it goes around the Ring; Vette and Camaro already did ;)
Why did it take 100 years to figure out this is a superior way to test cars?
They should add a high speed corner at the end for downforce assisted handling benchmarks too, or have that U turn straighten out and turn into a long sweeping turn for high speed handling then have the final straight for rolling acceleration
cause our focus was drag racing until we realized going in a straight line is nothing

Ya, I got to see an incredible brake/tire comparison as well.
Total performance is shown on the Nürburgring. Not on a flat dragstrip with a U-turn.
I love the Race. Everyone is doing 1/4 mile runs, 100 to 200 runs, rolling races. This is something new and interesting.

i know you know the jaguar got its reputation using a DAYNA LIVE AXLE ((read, made in america)). and you of course you know that ford consults DAYNA AXLES during R&D. now lets talk about how poorly the corvette handles please. because i know you know that lotus designs the suspension for corvettes.

Absolutely naild it. You guys have the best "what car is faster test" in whole UA-cam. Cars don't go only straight.
Did you replace the tires on the GT500? that is a base model not CFTP and the base came with Michelin pilot sport 4 not the cup 2's. Cup 2's came on the CFTP cars.

Awesome runs, just goes to show you 0 to 60 and quarter-mile times don’t show you the full potential of a vehicle. U drags pull out all around performance in every vehicle!! Would love to see the Shelby GT350 and a 10 speed mustang GT run this event. You guys now have ENDLESS content with the U drags👍🏽👍🏽

I'm really starting to love this series, that was a completely fair race and you could see both cars strengths. Just in different lights. Probably the best way to really get a feel for what cars are like at least if you're just looking through the camera
That Shelby is a beast for $20K less! I wonder what damage a track pack Shelby would do.
They’re worth about the same actually. But yeah the Shelby 500 is a hell of a car!
@@aldosayshi782 As tested the Shelby was $81K and the bmw $101K. They listed it in the stats. Base for base they're about the same, but these cars had options.
BMW has a good $30k more in interior quality and refinement. That’s where the $$ went, as they’re both the same price

Just by watching this one video I have subscribed. This is the right approach I personally think to testing cars these days, a mixture of real world activities simplified to standing start, braking and cornering with the right bit of rolling race mixed in!

Did they change tires on the Shelby? Because the non carbon track pack GT500s come on PS4S not cup 2s
Yes they put Cup2 since it’s their own car.
You really should be warming up the tires a bit before the race, for each cars optimal performance.
You could then bump the RPMs on the GT500 up to 2000-2200 for more grunt out of the hole.

It would be fun to watch a race in this format between the GT500 and a Hellcat Redeye.
This is absolutely brilliant! It should be a standard of performance at the drag strips to sort out the pure drag cars from the pure handlers that are not as quick in a straight line! It’s fantastic as you can get a great visual angle on how they also lean into and go around corners from the drone camera!

If you can get a hold of a 911 GT3, that would be a solid match for the shelby. Porsche would probably take it in launch, braking, and cornering.......but the roll race 1/4 is all shelby. It would be pretty fun to watch.
well first of all the gt500 barely beat the m4 here. in secodn race. the gt3 is also quicker than the m4 in a roll, since power is equal but gt3 is 7-800 lbs lighter. gt3 would easily win.

That braking and turn was horrible by that m4 driver 🤢 also the fact that the gt500 has cup2 a track tire vs a all season performance tire is just not really fair as well lol 😂
I agree. I think Chris Harris would have obliterated that turn time by 1/3 of the time it took in the M4. That said, at the bottom of the skill chart, I think even I could have done better.

Something not seeming right with the turning, I mean, of what used was the initial distance the M4 had if the two rides had to do the turns at about the same time?
The difference is supposed to show if the drivers can slide the M4 round the turn and not cancelling out all the difference with the rediculous slow turning.

Man that Shelby pulls. If Ford ever built this car with a modern AWD platform, it would be a SERIOUS contender in the sportscar world. And BMW's are famous for "underrating" their horsepower figures. Most modern BMW's I've seen dyno'd, actually make close to wheel horsepower, what they're rated for at the flywheel.
You guys should try a C7 Z06 next time. I truly do wonder what the result will be.

I really feel like any test like this should require and have the same tires on both vehicles. Tires can make such a difference.

First race M4 braked WAY too early, coasting into the turn. Allowed the GT500 to get back into the race.
It could mean that it is less confidence inspiring due to lack of feel.
On the same cup2 tires the M3 would have walked it, tire choice matters.

I already knew the outcome lol. Putting a 3 liter inline six against a super charged V8 with 260 more hp sealed the deal. I figured the m4 would get the hole shot and as expected the gt500 had the longer legs. Cool comparo tho but the M5 competition would be a better match with the gt500

I’ve got a ‘19 GT350 and absolutely love the “drivers car” experience. The GT500 is on another level yet does not have a six speed.
If Ford can fix the launch of the GT500, it would be in a class all alone. Incredible car just the same.
If u own one , u can fix it tune or just kno don't do drag mode its not the fastest way .

@@user-qm9oo2fd2o I voided my warranty with in a month after saying this will be my daily, but gas milage really tank size changed that for me . So I played with guys who had tuned bmws and porches so one thing lead to another now we are fullbolton e85 @ tuned ofcourse. 917whp.
