- Thin to thick paint. Larger brush to smaller brush. A lot more smaller brush than usual. The hardboard was primed with a few coats of shellac. I don't remember the palette, but this was painted all at once in a little over an hour.

I like the way this guy paints and what he sees as important and what he sees as unimportant........ it's similar to my own approach.
Lots of magic happens with very little effort... the picture seems to paint itself and the viewer is doing half the work.

This is something else. I can't get my head around how you started that with a large brush! Just amazing. I can do portraits with graphite and watercolour, but if you ask me to use oils or heavy bodied acrylic I die inside, I just can't. It feels like I am being asked to write when I do not know how. All I would ever love to be able to do is to do some sort of portrait with oils, even it it roughly looked human I would be so happy. This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing :)

Can anyone recommend some good tutorials to get started with portait and oil painting?
Draw Mix Paint has a great beginners series on here. All about mixing accurate colors, working w oil painting mediums, etc. Mark Carder (guy who runs it) does fantastic realism/ portraits and is an excellent teacher.
