Great video. I knew some of what you said, but at the same time I learned something. Thank you for teaching and making it easy to understand. You also took your time and that is important. Keep making your videos!
Your fortunate. I got a little guy near me who has a small space and not much pre-33 unless he gets it in. Then I got the big guys like Stacks where they got almost anything but at a cost. I think an LCS whose honest is your best bet when buying pre-33.
I hear you Matteo. Even the fakes can appear real. A lot of times they take worn out pre-33 gold, melt it down, and recast the coin into a rare date. I have gotten one of those myself from a reputable dealer. It's best to get it checked by a sigma or a reputable dealer or just buy it graded to be sure.
I love my pre-‘33 gold coins. All of mine are ungraded but I’m starting a graded collection very soon! Super excited to start it. Great video & explanation 👍
Thank you for watching Ticktology. I started out with my pre-33 gold ungraded. Make sure the coins haven't been altered before you get them graded. I collect watches also. I see you got a Milgauss for your pic. I got my submariner in one of my vids, haha.
@@StackThatGold I purchased most of them from JM Bullion/APMEX but sometimes the actual coin received is of lesser quality than advertised which is annoying and disappointing. This is why I’d like to start a graded collection although prices have risen quite considerably. We do not know what the future holds though and I’m still relatively young (in my late 20s). I want to add more pre-‘33 gold coins so I am unsure if I should get my existing coins graded or not & if it would even be worth it. That’s awesome - I’ll have to check out your video on your Submariner. Those are iconic watches, if not the most iconic automatic watch in the world. I love my Milgauss and purchased it earlier in the year. I work in the electric industry so it suits me well haha. Keep up the great work 👌.
I’m going to buy my first American gold coin tomorrow. All I want is pre-33 in my gold stack. I have right now a 1920 Gold 2 Peso coin in really nice shape Update: I went into the coin store, and I bought a $10 gold piece. It’s an 1893 Liberty head and it’s not graded, but he said it was probably MS61 or MS62 and looking at pcgs photo grade, I would agree. I paid $1,075 for it. Please let me know if you think I got a bad deal or not. Like I said I’m new to gold. I think I got a decent deal but I’m not totally sure. Thanks for any input
I love both coins. Pre-33 is my favorite to collect and fractional such as the Dos Pesos are my favorite to stack. Pre-33 gold acts more as an investment grade coin where Mexican gold is more of a bullion coin. I really wish you the best of luck with your purchase.
There are several other ways to define what grade a coin can be. In the old version of cleaning coins was to use cyanide to clean gold coins. This was a dangerous technique as several people have died using this technique, either through inhalations or accidentally touching or even drinking the solution (the drinking was due to the fact that the solution looked like tea or even some soft drinks). I do have to admit that your knowledge of gold coins and how they are graded and how they may be altered.
What’s the difference between a coin being rubbed with a cloth and a 100+ year old coin being carried in a coin purse or someone’s pocket in terms of scratches??
Usually when it's carried in someones pocket or purse it causes scratches and is not purpously rubbed, which generally keeps the luster (finish) on the coin. When it's cleaned, especially on something as soft as gold, the coin will generally shown many more scratches indicating it's been cleaned as well as a loss of luster (finish). Sometimes the grading will say cleaned for a coin that migh have only been rubbed against, but more often than not the coin will be labeled "AU Details" for example and won't be gradable. Hope this helps. It's not an exact science when it comes to grading. It's very subjective but this is an overall view.
@@StackThatGold I appreciate your response, however I really don’t understand the how’s and why’s about grading. And you’re correct, it is very subjective and the customer is at their mercy. That’s a shame.
I really want to get a pre 33 gold double eagle and monument metals has an XF grade for $1,950 but like u say I would have to get the coin without seeing it 1st Wich is very risky. I've done this once before and got my AU $10 liberty head from jm bullion and received a pretty decent coin but it was one of the highest mintage years. I would go to one of my coin shops but they are just way to expensive.
Exactly, its a risk, and sometimes I'm willing to take it cause I know if its not in the condition I want, I can flip it. Usually do that if I don't pay much over spot for the coin. I finally just went to an LCS near me and his price wasn't crazy, but all he had was some world gold. Pre-33 gold, watch out. Really try and look at it cause one grade can be a big difference in value.
@@silverking8742 I got a few😋I showed one in my tribute to rookie stacker. Also the video why you shouldn't buy pre-33 gold at this time, lol. Prices are starting to come down so I would say buy again.
@@StackThatGold well I'm at a crossroads on wether to buy a pure gold 1oz buffalo for only $1875 or a 90% pure XF double eagle that's actually a little under a full oz for $1955. The stacker side of me says get the buffalo it's a better value and bang for ur buck but the other side of me that loves how our money used to be gold coins and that the double eagle is just so beautiful. Just having gold in us currency is so freaking cool to me. So it's a really tough choice. Help me make a choice lol
@@silverking8742 Really depends on what your objective is. Selling a modern Buffalo, your not gonna have the same tax implications as pre-33 gold if you decide to sell. However, I think pre-33 will most likely go up more in value in the short term and maybe long term. It comes down to what you like more. If it was me, I'd try and wait to get a double eagle in BU and pay around $1955, which is not unrealistic for common dates like 24, or 27. Prices are falling now. If your dying to pull the trigger, get the Buffalo in BU. $1875 is a great price as of now.
Fascinating deep dive in to grading. Showing examples made this super useful. Appreciate your efforts here very much.
Thanks John. One of my best videos I put out to try and help people with pre-33 gold.

I'm lucky to have a good LCS in my small town so I’ve been able to see in person all the pre-33 US and world gold I purchased. Thank you for sharing!

Hey LLC. Thanks for watching! Hope it was informative.
Your a gold coin collector! Woot! Great job!
Well my channel name kind of says it all, lol. I collect/stack a little bit of everything but gold, especially pre-33 is my favorite to collect.
Reallly enjoyed the video but the wrappers around the holders had reflections that made it harder to see the reflections from the luster on the coin.
Appreciate you watching. If your interested in grades of any coins you can check out PCGS' Photograde website for examples.
Excellent Information ! 👍
Hope this helps you and the community.
