My first few coins were ones passed down from my great grandfather to my grandfather to me. He owned a small local pharmacy and they were coins from the register in his shop. I was given a few Morgan dollars and a $2.50 gold Indian head 1911 coin. They are by far the most cherished coins in my collection because of the history and family connection.
As an American, I think it's a great idea to own these gold coins. Pre-33 gold coins are amazing, and every coin tells a story. It blows my mind that our great great grandfathers and grandmothers were walking around with gold coins in their pockets to purchase things, it's incredible, and what do we have now? That $5 Indian eagle in capsule at the beginning of your video is beautiful
I love the 5.00 Indian coin!!! my first raw coin purchases were 3 $5 gold Indians and two $5 liberties. I also love the $2.50 gold Indian. I love this coin design so much that I actually where one in a bezel set on a gold chain! Great purchase in my opinion.
I have generic silver bars but really I have a love of junk silver and light circulation would be my favorite. Kennedy 64 half dollars are my favorite because they are circulated but very little. The problem with new good condition coins is they can only go bad. I was a wholesaler and I used to say I made my money when I bought it. So if you are not in a position to know VF from XF, me included, then I would just get the lower end coin because you are protected by the lower buying price. That is to say any fool can defend the melt value. Whats more is you can touch a "VF" with little fear.
That coin has the toughest looking dude of any coin in the world. He looks like he is about to open up a can of whip a$$. I love it. I have one and it is my favorite. Thanks again for making an awesome video.
@@2is1gold Agreed. Against overwhelming odds. Im trying to like the buffalo coin but it makes me sad. Both the human and non-human on it look defeated. 😞
I’m not a jewelry type of guy but I always thought if I were to wear a coin in a bezel around my neck..it’d be one of these pre-33 Indians. The design is beautiful. I definitely don’t plan on buying any pre-33 for my stack though. It sure is pretty though 🤩
I pick up pre 33 for the same reason I pick up Morgan dollars. It satisfies the collector urge in me, and keeps stacking fun. The history in each of these coins is fascinating to me.
@@2is1gold I agree, but prior to the craziness of the China virus I was able to pick them up at or slightly below spot. Some AU, mostly XF and cleaned. But apparently that fun is over, at least for now. No way am I paying higher premiums than I would for the AGE quarters.
Maybe it’s just me, but the story of pre ‘33 gold makes it that much more appealing. Not for stacking, but for the wonder and story behind these coins still existing. I like getting a few here and there. Premiums on pre ‘33 gold hurts though.
Great looking coin, just bought one as my first pre-1933. Not part of the main stack due to price, but really cool design and history and something I can pass down to my daughter. Gotta mix it up once in a while.
I like pre-1933 gold, it’s just a piece of history and I love having them. If I can get the right price I’ll throw one or two into the collection from time to time. But I’m with you, for stacking purposes it’s eagles and buffaloes for me
I saw that SD Bullion has that coin, and I’ve been wanting one ever since I’ve seen it. The history of old gold coins is very enticing. I can see why you bought it.
Just bought a 1911 $5 Indian Head gold piece yesterday. Wasn't looking for gold at my LCS, but I loved the looks and didn't know when I'd stumble across another one, so it came home. Most likely the only one I get since I prefer 1/4 oz or greater coins.
My favorite pre 33 gold coin. Unique design. I’m not much of a “stacker” - I don’t have any bullion coins but recently added my first Quarter Eagle to my collection and posted a video on my channel. Thank you for sharing.
Great video! I’m a silver collector & want to get more into gold stacking, but the 1 0z are too much 😞 what do you think about 1/10 ? I Just subscribed !
Guaranteed it won't go rusty like modern coins can, it doesn't take much time to check mintages, you can end up with some really special coins collecting pre33, I'd say it beats modern bullion
2 Is 1 I don't have a lot of pre 33 two of the $5 Indian Head and one of the $10 Indian Head but I would definitely get more. I can gather by watching your videos for a while now that you're not a coin collector but strictly a stacker. You probably started as a stacker with a stackers mentality. Don't get me wrong there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm quite the opposition where as I started as a coin collector turned stacker. The best of both worlds. Collecting to me is much more than preserving ones wealth over time it's a appreciation of the beauty and art of the coin itself. Be careful it can be very addictive. The $5 Indian Head has to be one of my favorite designs right up there with the Golf Buffalo.
I'm definitely not a collector when it comes to gold. I'm a huge snob, though. 😄 I expect my bullion to be perfect, I only buy what I know others would want, and I gravitate towards the coins with the best aesthetic. Worst of both worlds! 😅
@2is1 Re your question/comment around min 2:40 about pre 33 vs bullion, the only “advice” per se is something I heard from Lynette Zang on this topic wherein she spoke about the risk of confiscation on bullion over a certain ounce threshold not hitting pre 33 gold and pre 70s/80s (I’m forgetting) silver because those are considered “collectibles”. Also, worth noting that bullion jewelry (22K and up) is not considered “bullion” in the event of a confiscation either so that’s worth considering though the choices in the States for bullion jewelry are pretty narrow and DXB is your best bet for that. I’ve picked up a 2.5, 5 and 10 Indian this year. Will probably look for the two double eagles at some point just to have one of each for my collection. Nothing I would want to stack. They just have classic character. Beautiful history. Definitely a one off purchase.
Like the pre 33 US. I don’t have the Indian $5 or $10 just because of premium attached. I pick them when I can basically for the same price as their bullion US counterparts.
Every now and then I pickup an old coin simply because it's cool or historic. I primarily stack bullion for investment and I generally assume my 'cool coins' will only net me the spot price of their metal content or less
So far I've resisted the urge because it'll take me off track and send me into world of collector. But if I do go down that road the Indian Head is #1 on the list.
I've been seeing several guys getting their old gold coins graded, late 1800's to early 1900's and several of them have come back as counterfeit. I just sent a bunch of mine off to be graded just to make sure they are actually real.....
Saw one of these in my local coin shop on the auction wall. I put the first bid on it. I would love to have at least one of these. I collect for the historical value.
Of course! I think that the $5 liberty head gold piece is a nice one. I have 2 Indian head $ 2 1/2 gold pieces and a liberty head $2 1/2 gold piece but my favorite is probably the $5 liberty head.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, 2 is 1, and to yours. The incuse Indian Head half-eagle is a beautiful coin, as also the quarter-eagle. But the half, being larger is more eye-catching. I am mainly into coin collecting. And pre-1933 US gold is something I like very much. There's history and nostalgia about old coins, whatever the metal. But of course, gold is the best. Thanks, Shashank! Yes, I'd be more interested in this particular coin if it was larger. I love the character of the coin, but for its size I've never really been excited enough to do the work to get the right ones. This one just kind of jumped out at the right price. Sovereigns and Roosters don't do well at my local shops, or I'd still be interested in them. Thanks for watching! I appreciate the comments!
Just grabbed a 2018 1/10 oz gold kangaroo for $200 and the 2oz silver kookaburra 2020 for $56. I did pretty good today. Only $16 over spot in total. Not bad huh.
Not cleaned extensively at least. It was the same price he would have sold a 1/4oz AGE for. I thought it was a great find. I wasn't actively looking for it, but it jumped out!
Download a pcgs book from your app store. Anything you need to know will be in there. They have everything from half cents all the way up to colonial coins, gold coins and bullion.
You’re right - it’s been cleaned! Frankly, I’m not a fan of the incused $5 half eagle design. I prefer the $10 Indian eagle design. “S” mint mark is for San Francisco.
What evidence makes you so sure? I'm I missing something? Dirt in the font is normal and at the time people didn't like them and thought that dirt would spread disease.
I'd think that if you do the math on the amount of gold in each type of pre 33 coin, you can compare its premium vs new coins and see if you are at least getting a reasonable price on the bullion content.
Where are you sourcing from online? Every dealer I find online has prices much higher than LCS’s in my area, but on the flip they’re almost always out of gold.
@@2is1gold I use the sight all the time, didn’t even cross my mind using it for pre 33. You’re awesome man, keep up the great videos! Coming from a young person, I truly love your channel and hope it grows.
Definitely. Sovereigns and LMUs (like 20 francs Roosters) don't do as well here. The historical sentiment is largely what drives the collector value, and that varies region to region. Cheers!
@@2is1gold beautiful coins (we call it marengo) 20 francs, 20 lire etc. But also these are sold largely at spot + premium. Only rare coins with numismatic value get some higher valuations. You should cover proof coins sometimes, it is very interesting world :)
My LCS buys a lot of jewelry and with that comes pendants I've purchased several pre-33 and others .. my price is not much over melt so grading isn't of any concern
@@2is1gold if you dont want it ill gladly buy it off of you lol. for me its the beauty of the design. such a design in todays world might be seen as racist lol..... but its a beautiful design and my personal favorite. the beauty, history, uniqueness and limited mintage are all great reasons to stack pre33. after stacking modern bullion you kinda get bored with that stuff. also another great reason for pre33 is that it gives us a clear idea the power of gold back then.... $5 half eagle and $2.50 quarter eagle or the $10 eagle and $20 double eagle. i could go on and on about the positives but ill just say enjoy the treasure and keep stacking!
I'm going to look for pre 33 Gold that is 100 years older than my birthday or my anniversary. Lots of graded but cleaned coins from that era that you can crack out of the case.
I know this video is three years old, but I really like pre 33. They’re not making anymore of them. As long as they are not heavily worn I will continue to buy them along with 20 gold Francs.
I was quite surprised that you can get these cool historical coins at melt! I just picked up my first two gold coins at a local coin shop - both 20 francs (a 1809 Napoleon and a 1819 Louis XVIII). I watched quite a few of your videos beforehand and went to the coin shop looking for a Gold Eagle... but they didn’t have them, and instead had a number of these at melt and I fell in love with the combination of gold content and history. I’ve decided that I’m okay with sacrificing the liquidity for the history! I’d really love to be able to find some low premium historical coins. Curious if you have any tips on searching for older gold coins (US or otherwise) with the lowest premiums. Looking for online options as my typical location (DC area) doesn’t have many coin shops in the area. Searching for low premium on APMEX is easy (sort by a size, then priced low to high). But I’m not sure what to do about older coins with irregular ounces.
APMEX isn’t usually bad for Roosters and other LMUs, but their prices are typically much higher than other choices. Try finbullionprices.com and browse for the coins you’re interested in. Good luck!
@@2is1gold nice - thanks a lot! I love that this website displays the % premium! I’ve been able to pick up a few more 20 francs at local coin shops for a slightly better price than I could find online. Less predictable, but figure I’d support the local retailers when I can. Won’t be in Oregon too much longer!
I went with a solid base to start it off. First went with a Gold Eagle and then Gold Buffalo. As I was picking up the bullion I went with an AU Liberty Head Double Eagle. The Buffalo in hand is super impressive but, I think the double eagle stole my heart ha ha. I am Leaning toward Saint-Gaudens next :)
I like the coins, but what kind of knife is that? I just got my first pre-33 a couple weeks ago. A $5 and $2.50 Liberty Head, cleaned I'm sure. I'm not much on the numismatic side either.
To me, pre-33 has more character because people actually used them. My mother gave me a quarter eagle and all of her silver coins, including an 1854-O half, while my brother got the gold eagle. I know I would be less inclined to sell "real" coins, so if there are some decent looking circulated coins from the US or foreign country, I might considering purchasing a few of them in addition to the AGE.
I like the pre-1909 Liberty Head gold coins for some reason - the incused details on the Indian Head always seemed strange to me even though they protect the design on the coin better. Maybe I will get one some day.
Ahhh, a 90/10 Indian $5. One of my favorites. I agree the AGE is something that is more flexible and you don’t need to know anything about other than weight. My pre-33 stack is pretty weak.
I like the Indian head as well. But totally correct, modern bullion is worth all effort. Pre 33… who knows what you’re mispaying or if you can sell it easily, or how much you’re being taken advantage of if you have you over think the date. But yeah… a few 33 coins are cool for historical love.
Congrats on your sunken relief $5 indian. A very nice coin. I never buy these sight unseen. Yes, S means San Francisco. I'm not a professional on grading either but I do like them raw and looking nice.
I have a $1 gold liberty 1854 smallest U.S. coin ever minted! I bought it mostly for the history and uniqueness definitely not something I will stack! But it is cool that it’s gold!
Very first gold coin I got is identical to this one! 1909 D $5 Indian head after my sister passed away. I’ll keep this puppy for life. My next coin was 1 oz American gold eagle. Next I’m going for buffalo if we get a dip
Nice addition to your stack. What do you think of the lower premium US commemmorative coins? I don't hear much on them. Off weight & 90% aren't the most popular gold options but they're still American gold coins.
Thanks! I know people who like them. There's a surface tension for me. I feel like once I bought one, I'd be open to buying a lot more. I try to stick to typical, modern weights, though, if possible.
To me, Pre 33 coins are beautiful, but what I enjoy more are the history they have. To look at a Pre 33 coin & think, where was this coin kept? Where has it traveled? Who was the person who kept it so that it didn't get melted? etc. That's a great coin you have. Best wishes.
Wow you know your stuff with this coin. I thought you only bought the same American bullion coin over and over, but apparently you have been holding back! Time to show a lot more of the type one eagles and double eagles you probably have stashed away.
I don’t have any other pre-33s, unfortunately. I do have a few other random coins put away, but I’ve sold most of the old stuff and moved to the more basic options in most cases. 😅
Excellent video. I love the native half eagle. I've found they oftentimes can be around the same premium as modern bullion with a little haggling at the LCS. Merry Christmas.
Beautiful coin. I am collection the buffalo gold 1 ounce coins now. They are .9999 pure and they are beautiful coins. They are the first American gold coins to be 24 carrot I believe.
I like the old coins for the history and the character but I am not interested in spending on the premium because the premium has no intrinsic value. I have been drawn to poured gold buttons and picked one up from scottsdale. I will get another from them and then get one from Perth. Low premiums, high purity and easily verified
The best part of pre 33 is realizing that it was actual currency used once and that they have a story and were saved from being melted.
Yes! That's what I liked about the old European coins as well.
Thats what i like about them. The fact that someone's grandma saved it from being melted or sent over seas

Sovereigns and Roosters don't do well at my local shops, or I'd still be interested in them. Thanks for watching! I appreciate the comments!
I ordered my first 1/10th oz Britannia pretty excited. It was the cheapest 1/10th oz on HeroBullion. Can’t wait for it to come in.
Just grabbed a 2018 1/10 oz gold kangaroo for $200 and the 2oz silver kookaburra 2020 for $56. I did pretty good today. Only $16 over spot in total. Not bad huh.
Nice!
For close to the same over spot...
Pre 33 EVERYTIME.
Thats a Beauty.
Dirt in the font would tell me its not cleaned.
Cool. Thanks!
You’re right - it’s been cleaned! Frankly, I’m not a fan of the incused $5 half eagle design. I prefer the $10 Indian eagle design. “S” mint mark is for San Francisco.
Thanks! I think the incuse idea was clever, though. Makes them stackable. The $10 throws me because it's white liberty wearing a headdress.
Check findbullionprices.com to find the deals. That will surface the deals from the big dealers like JM Bullion, APMEX, etc.
@@2is1gold I use the sight all the time, didn’t even cross my mind using it for pre 33. You’re awesome man, keep up the great videos! Coming from a young person, I truly love your channel and hope it grows.
Europe here. I was recently told that 20 usd coins (specifically from 1876 and 1927) have zero value over regular bullions. Maybe it's a US thing
That’s great!
btw 1909s is a good one to have graded.... if its graded in mint state it could fetch a pretty penny cheers
Thanks!
I am a fan of your gold pick ups !! that Indian head has character !
The sculptor nailed it!
Nice!
I like the coins, but what kind of knife is that? I just got my first pre-33 a couple weeks ago. A $5 and $2.50 Liberty Head, cleaned I'm sure. I'm not much on the numismatic side either.
It’s a Chris Reeve Sebenza. Wonderful pocket knife.
Very cool gift. Cheers!
I love that coin! So, you’ve ventured into pre 1933. 👍🏼💰
Dipped a toe in. 😄
yeah I am glad I bought that new Chevy Malibu instead of that old 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner
I like the pre-1909 Liberty Head gold coins for some reason - the incused details on the Indian Head always seemed strange to me even though they protect the design on the coin better. Maybe I will get one some day.
They’ve always seemed a bit strange to me too, but knowing it was done to protect the design and make them stackable turned me around on the idea.
Ahhh, a 90/10 Indian $5. One of my favorites. I agree the AGE is something that is more flexible and you don’t need to know anything about other than weight. My pre-33 stack is pretty weak.
I don't really get into pre-33 for a few reasons, but this little coin (and it's size is one reason I don't get too excited about it) is really nice!
Hope you still have the Indian head.
I have two now. 🤜🤛
What capsules do you buy? I like how it is sealed in clear capsules and no foam
They’re Air-tire. The specific models with links are in the description of this video: ua-cam.com/video/m7lSvVq3FFc/v-deo.html
I like the Indian head as well. But totally correct, modern bullion is worth all effort. Pre 33… who knows what you’re mispaying or if you can sell it easily, or how much you’re being taken advantage of if you have you over think the date. But yeah… a few 33 coins are cool for historical love.
Yeah, if you know pre-33 coins very, very well, go for it. If not, be a bit careful. Cheers!
Are these worth collecting the entire set
Much appreciation for your work and Happy Holidays !
Happy Holidays!
Congrats on your sunken relief $5 indian. A very nice coin. I never buy these sight unseen. Yes, S means San Francisco. I'm not a professional on grading either but I do like them raw and looking nice.
I'm not sure I know exactly what to look for, but I checked a few before landing on this one. Happy holidays, Sal!
@@2is1gold Thank you sir. Merry Christmas to you and yours
INCUSE SAL *TYUx2*
I have a $1 gold liberty 1854 smallest U.S. coin ever minted! I bought it mostly for the history and uniqueness definitely not something I will stack! But it is cool that it’s gold!
Nice!
The best reason to own Pre 1933 is when you know why the category exists and why you should own some.
I’m all in on modern gold, I know nothing about pre-33
I know very little about pre-33. I know a bit about this particular coin only because I've always liked the art on the coin.
@@2is1gold as my stack grows I’ll likely add some pre-33. I’ll definitely need to do more research
@@bythebullions401 not something to just jump in as far as I'm concerned. I decided to pick one of these up months ago.
Very first gold coin I got is identical to this one! 1909 D $5 Indian head after my sister passed away. I’ll keep this puppy for life. My next coin was 1 oz American gold eagle. Next I’m going for buffalo if we get a dip
Nice!
Really great videos your putting out! Very informative.
Thanks!
Good video, thanks for sharing👍
Thanks for watching!
Great coin buddy. I have the 2.50 one, but I'll get one of these at some point.
The more I look at it, the more I think I might grab another!
I like that history too. At some point, I'm going to dive into the deeper side of the pool. Cheers!
Your indian head looks good. I couldn't tell if its cleaned uncleaned in 63 on that common year is about 1100 bucks might have been a good score
Thanks for the info!
No problem u ever have questions hit me up. Pee 33 stuff the people are sharks so watch out. I watch u all the time love your program!
I don’t own any pre-33 stuff. Cool stuff but there’s just so much better options out there to stack IMHO.
Agreed. These aren’t great stacking options in my view. They’re great one-off purchases.
Excellent video. I love the native half eagle. I've found they oftentimes can be around the same premium as modern bullion with a little haggling at the LCS. Merry Christmas.
A lot of haggling in my case. Have to exhaust them to the point they just give up! 😅
What size capsule does that $5 come come in? I’m picking up pre 33 today for $600 from my local coin dealer.
Looks perfect to me. I want some pre 33 gold
Love the Pre 33 Gold!
Can you put the Indian on the same « scale » than the Roosters ...(not usa) ?
More like the Sovereigns, but yeah.
@@2is1gold so harder to liquid for sure if indeed you don’t have the contacts or clientele for it. I studied them a lot last night ...
You got a 1909... D S or P ? Low mintages compared to 1910.
Anyone else having problems with shipping delays with USPS? I ordered coins with no scan updates for weeks.
Lots of slow downs for me, but not week long delays. Good luck!
My favorite design.
It's even more impressive given its age!
Beautiful coin. I am collection the buffalo gold 1 ounce coins now. They are .9999 pure and they are beautiful coins. They are the first American gold coins to be 24 carrot I believe.
I love the pre 33 gold!! Nice last minute pickup.✌️
Yeah, thanks!
I like the old coins for the history and the character but I am not interested in spending on the premium because the premium has no intrinsic value. I have been drawn to poured gold buttons and picked one up from scottsdale. I will get another from them and then get one from Perth. Low premiums, high purity and easily verified
The premium turns me off too. Especially the variable premium!
Super pretty coin 😍
Yeah, thanks!
