    Loving these shop/bus upgrade videos! For future concrete projects, id highly recommend sourcing a local concrete company that has tow behind mixer units that can carry up to a couple/few yards of mix ready to pour.
    This is what I used when I poured the pads for my two-post earlier this year. It makes life sooooo easy and they can throw some lyme in there and you can have full walking traffic in a couple hours.
    Keep up the great work!

    If you ever pour a slab again, you should research ready mix and rental places near you to see who has ready mix trailers. They are two axle trailers that look like a miniature ready mix truck that you can pull behind your pickup. In my area in Los Angeles the local rental place has them and they will do the mix how you want it and then put it in the trailer where it continues to mix in the drum powered by an on board small engine. They have powered dumping and you don’t have to touch any bags, so your back will love you for it and it’s reasonably priced so you wallet won’t hate you.

    Pad looks pretty good. I'm sure you already came to this conclusion but next time, rent a mixer. That little Harbor Freight toy probably cost more than a day's rent for a good mixer. A towable mixer can be rented at Home Depot for under $100 a day. That can mix 9 cubic feet at a time and an 80 pound bag is 0.6 cubic feet. Sooo, yeah ;)

    • @quickdeuce
      @quickdeuce 11 місяців тому +1

      If a guy's doing a project of this size and scope I agree 100%. Some citys there are places who rent 2 to 3 cubic yard towable mixers that will batch the concrete you want at their facility, tow the already mixed materials to your jobsite, with and a hydraulic jack lift and pour the concrete into the forms or a wheelbarrow. Limiting factors are of course how far away the mix plant is. You really don't want to tow for more than 30 to 40 minutes.

    • @TheRedMenaceR
      @TheRedMenaceR 11 місяців тому +6

      Honestly, those harbor freight mixers have saved our ass at work. Things are kick ass. They could've definitely gotten it into that wheelbarrow, you just have to nose it in and pick up on the handles a little. For a pad that size that thing would've worked kick ass if they got it sorted, mixing from the back of the truck etc. They could've also put the mixer on blocks or something if the height was that much of an issue. Either way mixing a pallet by hand is far from the worst I've personally had to do with concrete, but watching them start with that tiny shovel was KILLING me hahaha. All in all it worked out pretty in my semi professional opinion. Also, he probably was able to return it. Its insane what HF will take back. We bought a new mixer with the protection plan and returned a totally burnt out one from like the 80's a few weeks later on that plan. No questions asked.

    • @mckrackin5324
      @mckrackin5324 11 місяців тому +1

      @@TheRedMenaceR Yeah, I've poured millions of yards (literally) of concrete and for a car guy and UA-camr, that little mixer was a waste of money. I can see it being worth the money if you were in the business of mixing 4 or 5 bags every now and then but if you're mixing a pallet and never going to again, renting a proper mixer is the way to go. Personally, I'd find a reason to form up the 4 yard minimum and get a truck. I'd have probably just put an 18X18 pad right where he poured that 1 yard. Good spot for an outdoor bar and lounge area ;)

    • @macgyver03ga
      @macgyver03ga 11 місяців тому +1

      @@mckrackin5324definitely creating a larger area to be able to utilize a truck minimum is the ticket. It’s actually gonna be less labor intensive because all you’re doing at that point is placing and finishing. No mixing. You’re talking maybe ~$700 worth of concrete.

    Only thing I would say about the concrete is to use a "tamping board", basically attach a 2x4 to another 2x4 in a T-shape and lightly tamp down on the concrete top to bottom, side to side. Helps eliminate bubbles and helps work it underneath the rebar and make everything settle nicely and secondly would be to brush the top surface with a yard brush once its nearly dry, should be basically solid with just a slight squish to it. Gives the best finish for grip and also helps run water off the surface and away from the wall :) great video, loved it

    Good on you for doing the concrete,,, back in 91-92 we poured T walls in a 120x60' hog barn. 3" thick, 4' high... We had a 1/3 yard electric mixer and two wheelbarrows, used typical aluminum scoop shovel's to fill the forms. Over the course of 9 months I shoveled 3 triaxle loads of sand/gravel + three pallets of cement... I used to do concrete and one thing I would’ve done was taken 4 inch tapcon screws and when you put that expansion joint foam on the garage foundation you screw it into the foundation but you only put the screw in halfway leaving it sticking out 2 inches and what that’ll do is prevent the concrete pad from ever sinking or pushing up against the foundation of the garage.

The loads your porch will be subject to are not great enough to justify rebar. Rebar is only needed when there is enough force to cause concrete to fail in tension. It can also increase the chance of cracking and spalling if not installed correctly.

    I have one of those lil HF mixers & the trick is to put about a gallon & 1/2 of water in the mixer before the bag for an 80lb bag & 1 gallon for the 60lb. One you discover that then they do all right for what they are. Keep the vids coming brother !

    Hindsight is 20-20. I would have considered lean-to on each side of the shop during construction. But budget is a consideration. Could have poured concrete on each side then add roof when budget allows. But you got your pad in. Now the roof. 😊

      He was limited to overall size by local laws, likely property size and percentage of house sf. I assume a lean to would have counted towards that size restriction and not have passed inspections. He wants to build a lean to off the back but was planning to do it at a later date without inspection.

    You guys did a good job with the slab given the DIY nature of it (floating with a placer lol very impressive).
    A better idea is always to form enough to call a short load and a hire a finishing crew. You'll literally save money and it will come out better than you can ever DIY.
    Bagging concrete for a finished surface NEVER makes sense all the way down to having to handle the bags, mix consistency etc.. It basically only makes sense if you’re pouring deck footers, sonotubes, tiny 3'x3' pads and so on.

    been wanting to try concrete for a while. This video makes me think i can actually do it. Ive poured into those tubes which was easy but making a sidewalk is a little more challenging as i need the tools and actually do something other than mixing.

    A friend used to work at a Street Rod fabrication shop. They would use a concrete mixer with a mattress wrapped around it, they had ceramic rocks and would throw their brackets inside to deburr.

      The problem wasn’t it unloading. We unloaded it fine. The problem was that I didn’t want to put it inside the form boards to unload it and the wheelbarrow was too tall.

    On the concrete, start the first batches wet and dry them up as you go and it all goes. You can also finish it as you go. And when you mix it if one person stands at the back and one at the front it basically makes a mixers outta the wheel barrow

  • @stevek9844
    @stevek9844 11 місяців тому

    Have you thought about a loft area at the end of the building? It would still allow you to use the area under it while providing a ton of storage space and maybe even a sitting area. I think we also need a T-shirt with your face on it and the caption: "That being said, I'm gonna stop jibber-jabbering" LOL both projects turned out great!

    Something that I did in pouring a pad about that size maybe a little bigger was I used the homedepot buckets and regular m18 hammer drill with a concrete mixer attachment and mixed it that way or I’m sure you could do the same in the wheel barrow. I just like using the drill because it less work than mixing by hand and it’s more efficient for me. Love the videos

  • @tewindle
    @tewindle 11 місяців тому

    I have the same Harbor Freight mixer, the instructions are not very good, but the mixer blades can be installed wrong and it will not mix well and you get pockets of dry cement. It is pretty easy to put it inside the forms and pour while it is mixing, or if the mix is slightly fluid. It works well for what it is. Also make sure to tap the form boards with a hammer to get the edges filled, same theory as tapping top with a trowel.

    You may to do some research regarding the over hang (awning). I too have a 30x50 metal building much like yours. I contacted two building manufacturers including the one that assembled mine. Nether would touch it. They said these buildings are not structured designed to add awnings. Mine even has the vertical outside sheet metal which has horizontal girts between the vertical studs. So, I built a self standing wooden awning using 4x4s attached to 8" concrete cylinders. I live in NC which probably don't have the strong winds that you guys have. Let me know if you are interested in building you one and I will send you pictures and material that I used. Great videos!
