I was neutral on this argument till I finally got to see Tool for the first time a few years ago. The experience was wonderful. Not having a bunch of phones in the air all around you made it a much more engaging experience. Compare that to the next show I went to a few months later, Deftones, and this lady next to me was taking selfies and video (with flash) pretty much the whole time. It was obnoxious as shit for me and other people around her were visibly annoyed.
I love both bands equally, but I know what experience I'd prefer.
I just seen A Perfect Circle this past Friday. I had never been to an event that didn't let you film. IT WAS AMAZING. Everyone just standing there in silence... Captivated... APC opened with The Package... It was unreal to look across the crowd and just see nothing but a sea of blackness... It was awe inspiring. I've gone to hundreds of shows over the last 20 years... I've never seen anything like it. The crowd just sat and stared.

I WAS BORN IN 1978...I HAVE SEEN SOME OF THE BEST BANDS IN CONCERT...AND ALL BEFORE CELL PHONES...WHEN THE ONLY THING THAT GOT HELD UP WAS LIGHTERS....SINCE 2000'S( WHEN PHONES BECAME MORE PREVALENT) , UP TO PRESENT TIMES, ANY CONCERTS I HAVE ATTENDED ARE COMPLETELY RUINED BY DOUCHE NOZZLES WITH THEIR DAMN PHONES....

Almost but not more annoying than fans singing lyrics at higher volume than performing band/artist (e.g. Billie Eilish concert). Didnt come to hear their sorry assed singing talent
somewhere in the middle would be better imo, I like to take 2-3 short snippets to show my family who can't attend, someone holding the phone up for half the concert or more is just annoying for everyone
I'm GenX. There were no phone camera back in the 90s to 2010 or something. We had the time of our lives at those shows. We all have phones expect some of us know when NOT to use them
In this instance it’s gotta be a generational thing. I watched many a show back in that time frame too bc and loved every minute. Younger fans now live in a world where they can whip that thing out in an instant and take any photo they like. For most of em it’s more of a compulsive habit. Funny, I think, cuz it’s somewhat older fans were responsible for the years of bootlegging, but now when it’s people and their phones it’s just a bunch of crummy pictures and a few clips for personal use. No need to bootleg cuz so much can be found online that they don’t need too. Damned if you do damned it you don’t.
There were real bands back then as well,now,pickens are slim for good original bands.

He wouldn't be the same dude, or have written the music so many love, if he wasn't. He has the writing and lyrical talent to back up being such a prick.
But he's absolutely right about the cellphones, noone wants to have to sit there and find the perfect angle of the show behind a sea of phones recording and snapping pictures. It's the rules of the show, explicitly explained before it ever starts. If you got kicked out for breaking the rules, that's totally on you.
You pay a shit load of money for tickets and then you have to spend the entire show trying to hover your head around some asshole who has a huge phone in front you “documenting” the whole show…thank you Maynard
I agree with him. I had to watch a Deftones concert through someone’s phone screen because they wouldn’t put their damn phone down the entire concert. I asked him to put them down and they told me to fuck myself.
I go to concerts to be there in that moment. A sea of cell phones is a real bummer especially if I'm at the same level behind them. I love that he does that.

I saw Tool in 2001/‘02. Not a single cell phone in sight. All you saw was a sea of black where the audience was. All eyes glued to the stage having our minds blown. I really miss those days 😢
I was at the Atlantic City Sessanta show and I feel like not having my phone out allowed me to fully appreciate the experience. It was one of the best shows I'd ever seen.

My first concert was Blackfoot...they only had two decent songs! lol...My second concert and next 125, was wrkg. security for Ratt on their 85’ tour w/Bon Jovi opening for them! Good times...We didn’t have a clue there’d ever be such a thing as a damn cellphone! LOL...but if we would’ve had them, I’d have a lot of great pics that I’ve lost otherwise. A lot faded because they were ( Polaroids ) lmao! A ton lost in moves from here to there and back again. And some even stolen by ex GF’s...so I say let em take a damn picture for the love of all that’s holy! An entire video of the whole damn concert...NOPE, that’s crazy! And take that pic w/out holding that crap right in front of someone who’s trying to see over you! Or at least ask if they mind and say thanks after. Manners matter people.
I’m a theater pit musician and you’re not allowed to film Broadway shows, off Broadway shows, plays, symphonic concerts or operas. But for some reason it’s allowed at concerts. Years ago, you’d have to be crazy to sneak a camcorder into a concert. You’d be thrown out immediately. We have to go back to this.
Firstly, there are people who secretly record those shows, *especially* Broadway musicals! The secret Broadway musical recordings are often referred to as "slime tutorials". 🤓
Secondly, that will never happen. The concert culture has changed drastically ever since phones were allowed. Many artists, usually young rappers or pop stars, encourage people to record at their shows. It gives them more clout!

I paid 270.00 per ticket for the Mohegan Sun show. I personally like the no cell phones. It’s gotten way out of hand. People are just selfish nowadays. You paid to see and hear a live show. Not to record the whole show for your UA-cam channel or for FB live bs.
I don't like people staring at their phones either, but it is what it is. It's the new normal. I'm against kicking people out for it.
IMO That's dismissive and just trying to normalize what is often poor behaviour. People holding their phones up and block the views of and or distracting others is not cool. Same with the ones who have the flashes on. If you want to record fine, but be a decent human being about it and keep your phone low, no higher than the top of your head as to not block other people. Even then, the light from the screen of your phone can still be annoying. People are paying good many to see these shows and some want to live in the moment. They shouldn't be inconvenienced by selfish and or ignorant people.
@@0verload It's not about decency, it's about people missing his performance. I'm saying this is something that cannot be controlled, not sustainably at least. Best bet is for these bands to embrace it, like Metallica has.
As someone who began attending concerts before cell phones, the no photos or video policy is not anything that is new. Policy was that you were not allowed to bring any recording device (camera, video camera, small tape recorders, etc…) in the venue. While being searched at the gates if you did have one of the before mentioned items they were confiscated and you didn’t get them back. I for one find it annoying af trying to watch the concert with someone’s phone in my way. The rules and consequences are stated for their shows before you enter. If someone wants to ignore them, that’s on them. Just because someone doesn’t like the rules doesn’t negate the fact they did. I’m going to have to be in that 18% that agree.
Completely agree with Maynard. As a GEN Xer who constantly went to concerts back in the 90s, boy do I miss those days. And the rules were clearly stated before going into the show. You fuck around, you find out.
same gen as you, lived that same rock n roll/raver life and miss those magical moments for sure but there’s may a time i wish i could relive the moment from a vid clip. i hate when ppl stand at shows and the phones are as lame but i’m definitely guilty of grabbing a moment or two these days and ESPECIALLY AT THE COST OF TIX i surely want to relive the moment 😂

I completely agree with Maynard! As I mentioned earlier, attending the Tool concert in Phoenix was an incredible experience without everyone holding their phones up in the air. It allowed me to be fully present and enjoy the amazing show.

What he's talking about is the time honored tradition of rock concerts. Our society has gotten soft to the point that they don't think they can function without their cellphones. It's not good at all. The point of technology is it's supposed to enhance our lives - not make us slaves to it. Hell, for decades "No recording devices of any kind allowed" was printed right on the concert ticket. A concert is an intimate experience between the band and the fans attending. The band needs to be able to feel comfortable improvising and taking chances. They don't need the added pressure of a possible slip-up being shared with the rest if the world. In many ways, cellphones at concerts have been the death of not only live albums and professionally shot concert videos, but the death of musical risk taking as well.
i kinda disagree, whilst it's excessive to film more than a few clips, I like to take a few short clips, amounting to like a minute or so of video, to show friends and family who couldn't attend the show. Aside from that I live in the moment, enjoying the show. Slip ups being shared with the world would be far outweighed by positive moments being shared, unless the band is just trying to cover up being mediocre at what they do
I was nearly kicked out of a TooL show for snapping a few photos. Absolutely knowing it was against the rules. I am not a fan of people pulling out there phones to snap vids and/or photos….but I do not think they should be kicked out of the show for it
I totally agree with the No Phones thing. I'm not a huge fan of Tool or Maynard but think the shows should be something not shared world wide...but at the same time...If ticket prices are going to continue to skyrocket and IF these bands think not having phones at a show will drive ticket sales out of some idea that you can't go to youtube and see what the show looks like so More People will pay to come see the show....well...that's worse! As far as Ticket Prices.... WTF is happening?!?! $500-$1200 for pit?!!??! Ya'll on meth asking that amount!
I agree with discouraging phones for the whole show, but taking 2-3 20 second clips to show family who can't attend shouldn't be demonized.
I recently saw APC. The no phone policy was amazing. I didn’t have to deal with a sea of people holding phones directly in front of me all night. Felt much more personal with people actually paying attention.
I'm not so sure what's annoying about having a really awesome view of somebody's phone recording right in front of you.
I'm not some old fart who thinks some music is too loud. I'm 27. I agree with Maynard. Especially if he allows them to video the last song. Hes right, if you do it at a play it's wrong and you get kicked out. Movie theater, same thing. This is his show he can enact whatever policy (within reason) that he wants. I also agree with him as far as it being distracting and needing to live in the moment. People are way too attached to their phone and everything is so fast, were teaching ourselves to have short term memory. Its very important to be able to live in the moment. A lost art really.
Prior to current times when virtually everyone is carrying a cellphone, you were not allowed to bring a camera into a concert, unless you had authorized press credentials. Your "right" to film or photograph did not exist. The game changed completely when everyone got a phone. I agree with Maynard. If you don't like his rules, don't go to his shows. Allowing people to use their phones at the end is a marvelous compromise. Ticket prices will remain high as long as shows continue to sell out. The audience can force artists to bring their prices down to reasonable by boycotting overpriced shows for a couple of years. Anybody willing to do that?
the sting and peter gabriel tour in 2016 or 2017 had both bands on stage the whole show. they would do a gabriel song, then a sting song, and so forth until the end of the show. sting would do backing vox and bass on gabriel's songs, and gabriel would do backing vox and keys on sting songs. both backing bands stayed on stage and played the whole show. it was VERY COOL

I'm not sure why people get so bent out of shape about the no phones policy. Everyone knows they don't allow phones so if you want to film just don't buy a ticket and if you do buy one you know what you're signing up for. I'll usually record a little bit at shows myself but when I saw TOOL for the first time back in February It wasn't hard to just keep my phone in my pocket for 2 hours.
It’s annoying when people use cellphones at shows. I live in the moment. I’ve taken a few pics but I never look back at them. I think fans should be able to use their phones unless they’re bootlegging the show.

Sorry when I took my video of my all time favorite song when I saw Motionless in White this year on my cellphone (Which is Devil's Night) I am so happy I got to film that whole song. Others I took bits and pieces of (Shorts) but that was and is still dear to me. When I used to go and see them every year they played live and they did that song that was the main song I always used my cell on and a lot of times the only one. I also have to say that I've spent thousands on Merch both at "all" of the concerts I've been at and just sitting here at home buying band shirts and the like for them so why would they take something some of us use to watch over and over again to get pleasure and love from until at least the next concert?

I remember in the 90s when artists started banning smoking at their shows and people lost it and accused them full of themselves for doing it.
I was at the Raleigh show too, and I LOVED not being surrounded by people taking photos/videos! Yes, I do occasionally snap a pic or video to document that I was there, or record my favorite song.... but at Tool/APC/Puscifer shows, it really is a storytelling event. As Maynard said "Stay with us, stay connected to us. If you can't put that thing down for 3 hours, you've got a problem". It was an emotional rollercoaster. Enjoy the show, enjoy the music, enjoy the experience. As far as kicking people out, I'm a little on the fence. I don't think it's that serious to kick someone out, but you're really robbing yourself of a great experience if you do stay on your phone the whole time.
Before people want to blast him without context, he means the fans that try to record shows and ruin the experience with a sea of phones the whole time instead of living in the moment and enjoying the show.

@davegamer84 So many people record during shows, over half the crowd. And most of them hold them up high or make a big distraction from it. MJK tries to make the experience better with the policy they have. During the last song he allows the phones to be out to record, and right away it's immediately blocking 😂

@@davegamer84it has been a problem for a long time...but some artists understand how annoying it is to see fans trying to enjoy a show but only being able to watch ot through a tiny screen due to some douche holding their hands aloft, blocking the view of the stage whilst recording a whole songs worth of video...its rude, inconsiderate of those behind and as he said, it can be distracting for the performers, it dumbs the crowd down. Just look at dance music performances and watch a crowd of people who should be dancing, busy videoing ....it makes a mockery of the effort put in by the performers and it does make you wonder, sometimes, why they bother if people aren't going to get into the moment and experience.
I suppose that's a byproduct of the social media age of wanting to have shit to put online so you can show off yo your mates you have been to a gig.

Went to see them with my girlfriend this last Saturday in Houston. We were in the venue almost 2 hours before the show started and were taking a picture of us together and almost got tossed out.
Also to be fair, if you're well aware that you're going to get kicked the f*** out for breaking your phone out it's like going anywhere you know what the rules are when you're walking into any given place. So if you blatantly choose to ignore that it's your own f****** fault. It's like walking into a strip club asking for a lap dance and then f****** completely groping the s*** out of the f****** quote unquote dancer, like you know the deal no hands buddy.

Saw Puscifer a few years ago. They were weirder about checking the time on your phone than the dude smoking a joint. It was an indoor show lol. Totally amazing concert
I've seen Tool multiple times over, APC twice, Puscifer once, and will be at his Birthday show this Thursday. This has been a policy at Tool shows for a very, very long time, and the venues make sure the policy is very clear. In all my years attending these shows I think I've only seen people get kicked out once, and that was after security giving them MULTIPLE warnings. Do I snap a few quick photos and short clips at shows? Sure, sometimes, but I think Maynard is more talking about the fans who hold their phones up high, blocking or disrupting someone else's view who also paid a lot of money to be there. Which i definitely find annoying, at least be courteous to those around you. Like you said, I think it's important to get more details of what all those fans were doing to be removed. Maybe they've gotten more strict over the years, but the only time I saw this happen the fans had multiple chances to stop breaking the policy. Tool has specifically said they never officially release live footage because each performance is different and special to that audience who paid to be there that night.
Sessanta was amazing! I've never seen a show quite like it.

EVERY concert I went to in the '90s didn't involve a cell phone & I'm sure they weren't an issue at concerts in the 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s either. As a fan I don't like the idea of allowing cell phones into the venue. Nobody is allowed to use them in a movie theater, so what makes it OK at a concert? Would anybody enjoy being video recorded ALL OF THE time at their job? I think the people performing should decide the cell phone issue when the concert/tour is announced. I'm very ANTI-cell phone at concerts. Now that we have these things, there NEEDS to be a thing called concert etiquette. Social media & cell phones have ruined etiquette & patience in general.
I once saw a woman in the pit area (no "pit"), using a tablet to record entire songs. If you use your phone,If you take pics, no flash! Videos, 10-20sec... tops.
I saw Tool in 2007 and they were doing the no-phone policy back then. I still managed to get some decent video clips since my phone only let me record videos up to 60 seconds, lol.
Totally hear ya I saw them that same year but cellphones weren't as prevalent then however the cellphone thing is just the latest thing with Maynard for several years he's always had a "thing" when I saw them that year I would say it was easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to however he didn't come to the front of the stage not one time and he stayed basically behind the band in a costume

I'm with maynard for the most part. It's one thing if you're keeping your phone low and are not blocking other people's views and or are not making them have to see the light from your phone screen. The selfish ones who ruin it could seemingly careless who they're blocking or annoying with their phone, and or have their flash's one, etc. Also, some people just lack self awareness and self discipline and just can't seem to put their phone down for any reasonable length of time. Their ignorance and or addiction is no excuse to inconvenience others.
Also, IMO he is right about living in the moment. For a short time I went to 3 concerts where I recorded 50% of the show on my phone. Then one day I said to myself. "Why the hell am I watching the show through a 5 inch screen when I'm there in person. Now I just take maybe 2 or 3, 20 or 30 second video of my favorite songs and keep the phone low and out of people's view while I do it.
Maynards right tho. Spending all that time and money just to record a show/song through a phone and miss the performance isn't just annoying for everyone around them but the band, the staff, all involved have a worse experience. Missing the whole show to get a mid recording you'll watch back once

The whole deal behind no phones being out at his shows is strictly for being in the moment, not constantly being attached to your damn phone enjoy and be in the moment of what’s going on that’s really what it’s all about. I completely understand and justify his rules for the show.

I love the no cellphone policy. People behind you can't see if your holding a cellphone up. Plus, live in the moment at a concert, I record every show I've been to with my eyes, ears & emotions, they're all stored in my brain. 🧠

The thing about recording is if I wanna go see a show, I wanna see it as though it's a surprise how good or how bad it is. Taking photos or short videos for my own documents and memories I can see it. But to sit there and film the whole thing is annoying to those around. I wanna be surprised at what I see. I know a prime example is comedy shows, I don't wanna see a preview of the jokes I wanna be able to laugh at the surprise, with that said I saw tool last year. I snuck a few pics in. However the lighting was so good I couldn't resist
God forbid fans get to capture moments on there phone that they can show to there friends and look back on for good memories in the future 🤦🏼♂️
That's typically why people record concerts and take pictures in the first place, and it's also a good way for ALL of the people that can't afford these expensive ass concerts now to be able to see these moments.
assuming everybody clearly knows the rules up front, can't cry and whine about being kicked out for breaking them then, LOL. The rest is just excuses. Don't like the rules? Don't go to the show. Just rude and IMO yes, selfish to flaunt the clearly stated and agreed upon by most audience members rules for that "just 10sec of my fav song" crappy video clip.
I've been at shows where all phones were put in some kind of locked pouch for the duration of the show, on the way out they opened them up again and collected the bags, worked no problem right at security check. Would be nicer if people would just respect the artist and their rules though. But there are always a couple of those "me first, I dow what I want" in every audience.
I have seen Puscifer 3 times, Tool 1 time, and now with the Sessanta show APC for the first time. Personally I have never had a problem with the no phone policy. It made me more appreciative of the show in front of me. Of course I have a tendency to take my phone out and record like most, but when it comes to any one of Maynard's bands I truly am more engaged with the experience when I don't reach for my phone. Of course they let people take them out for the last song which is cool.
There's a magic in live performance and the spell is broken seeing the guy in front of you filming it. It's not just a matter of the distraction of the light from their phone or that phone blocking your view. What Maynard means by selfish is inconsiderate. Just like Lauren Boebert was inconsiderate to the audience around her filming the play. It drew the attention of everyone behind her onto herself and her phone, off the play, and broke the spell of the moment. Darkened theaters are a mood and distractions are forbidden in theaters because they break the mood and spoil the show. I studied photography but stopped taking pictures shortly after because worrying about taking the picture ruined the moment, and most of those pictures just ended up wasting space on my hard drive as I rarely look back at them.
As he’s admitted before, he is a very gentle snowflake and proud of it. Love his musical talent and do attend his shows, but he can be annoying at times

Ummm he served in the army in which he excelled that it got him an invitation to study at West Point (he declined) and also owns a Jiu Jitsu gym, not sure snowflake is the term

Yep, no phones at shows. EXPERIENCE the moment live. If we're that addicted that you can't put the device down then you need to ask yourself some questions.
I wasn't aware that Tool banned cellphones at their shows, but I'll probably book a handful of them now just for that reason, totally want to support their anti-cellphone stance

I 100% agree with Maynard and appreciate the no phone policy. All shows back in the day prohibited cameras and recordings, it should be that way with concerts today.
I agree with Maynard. If you're taking a pic or video then you will be trying to get the best angle or capture you can. You aren't experiencing the moment because you're distracted trying to get things just right. Just enjoy the experience of the moment and you will appreciate it more than the person who's focused on trying to get a pic or video. Put your phone away.
I appreciate no phones, i miss concerts back in the day before!!! Everyone was into the moment of the concert!!!! Only the people there got to have the experience!!!! I also feel like it made more people really want to be at the show, because you couldn’t see it any other way!!!!
As the artist putting on the show, if he chooses for people not to be on their phones I completely agree with him. I think movie theaters, concert venues, and other places should follow suit and ban phone usage.

I saw Tool in 2019. He made it clear about not using cell phones from the beginning of the show. However, with 3 or 4 songs left, he said take photos if you want- just with no flash. I've got a handful of great photos from the show. Top 5 concert for me. It was exactly the same when I saw Prince around the same timeframe. Top 5 show for me as well

I strongly agree with MJK. I can't stand it when people use their phones. Watch the show you came to see and show respect for the artist on stage and the people around you. There's two things that don't belong at concerts, phones and crowd surfers.
Maynard is right. People have lost the ability to just be in the moment. And from the audience POV, seeing a see of screens takes you out of the experience. And if you use flash, fuck you very much!

I went to a highly anticipated show once, and basically had to watch the whole performance on stage from some asshole's smartphone screen right in front of me. Now, considering that I'm probably never going to see the band again, I'm more leaning towards Maynard's point of view.
Yup I was there. The show in reading, pa. First song came on ,cell phone went up and people got pulled.
Having attended a show in 2015 in which the ban wasn't in effect, and seeing nothing but phones held up in the air the entire time, I found it annoying af!
Next show that the ban was enforced was so much better. I gotta agree with him. I am old enough that the vast majority of concerts I attended were cell phone free, and it's just a much better environment. Some people just seem to live by looking through a lens, and MJK is correct. So much of the experience is missed by living behind a lens, and that neglects just the annoying aspect of trying to see the stage but having a bunch of lit up screens in the way.
I can't figure out what's more annoying, being told what to do at a ROCK CONCERT that costs 100$ to get in these days or the dorks who want to play with their phone the whole time. I find both are annoying.
I always film at least one full song per band on the bill. (Though with Tool songs that would obviously be a harder task). I go to a show almost every other month, and It doesn’t really annoy me when people have them out since in my experience they are never filming the whole show. It’s just part of life now, and I wish he’d stop acting like such a boomer about it. Yes some people can be excessive and annoying. That doesn’t have to ruin it for everyone else
The younger generations weren't taught about public etiquette. I no longer go to large public events due to this
I have the same Pantera shirt. Very cool. I agree with MJK. Put the phone away. Enjoy the show, be present. Went to see Tool a few months ago. Phone was in my purse the whole time until the last song. Respect the band or artists wishes.
He lets everyone know before the show even starts...its on you after that.

When I saw Puscifer in 2022, I felt like not being able to pull out our phones and seeing people get dragged out was fun and almost part of the show, especially with aliens and clones dancing around. I loved it personally because he had a whole video playing that said they were gonna toss them in a meat grinder. It made it more entertaining. The whole show really toyed with my head and I've been questioning reality ever since.
They dont 'Prohibit' cellphones either. They dont take your phones they just ask that u dont do it. If u get caught they hold it til the end of the show.
Man I was also down at the show in Raleigh! I rocked out so hard my top hat flew off!
Going to concerts in the 80s & 90s, if you tried sneaking in a camera or video camera or audio recorder, they would get confiscated at the gate. If you managed to sneak them through and you were caught using them during the concert, you would get booted, as well as having them confiscated. Since everyone basically has all 3 in their phones now, they can't confiscate them but can boot you, if they choose. I do get annoyed at seeing so many phones at shows, and the quality of the pictures/video/audio is usually pretty bad (unless you happen to be at a sweet-spot), but it is cool to be able to see video of a show that you weren't able to go to. I have mixed feelings about it, but in the end, it's Maynard's show, so it's Maynard's rules.
They always let you "whip em out" at the end of a Tool concert.. He will tell security to stand down and you can have your cell phone souvenir at the end of show for the last song. So If these idiots can do without it and actually enjoy the show Maynard will allow it at the end.
Maynard James Keenan has always been obsessed about being in the moment at his live shows. So many fans have wanted a official TOOL DVD/ BLU RAY of a live show and A Perfect Circle as well. Maynard has said it will never happen he wants you at the show and wants your brain to remember the memories, he wants you to feel the music in person. I personally think he should do a official live release already. I think if he released an official DVD / Blu ray maybe it would cut down on the people trying to bootleg the show. I think the phone policy is a little harsh, but I have been at shows were people just hold a screen up the hold time and it is annoying. I feel that since he does let the fans usually film the last song, just play his game or don't go to the show. That is how I feel. If it bothers you, don't go to the show, if you go, just wait till the end or else you might get kicked out. I am torn on this issue. I feel some people should get thrown out, but not all. I saw Tool in January of 2020. I was a little weirded out by the no phone policy, but once the show started I’m so glad. It was art, basically.
I completely understand his stance on phones. People should be present, especially at concerts. But I saw Tool in January and at the end, he immediately walked off while Danny, Adam and Justin stayed on stage for 10 minutes with the house lights on and did the normal waving and handing out picks and sticks and were very appreciative, as usual. I’ll always love Tool, and will always know that mjk has become that asshole that we used to laugh about and think was cute in songs like “Hooker with a Penis” in the 90s
I caught this show at the Woodlands in Texas and I had the same opinion. It was an awesome show. A very unique show and set up! It was an experience to say the least. I'm glad I went. A Perfect Circle was on my bucket list and getting Puscifer and Primus was definitely a treat! Happy Birthday Maynard!!! I wish you many more!
I honestly have an issue with people who do nothing but video the concert, the problem is that if you don't set some sort higher standard people are going to do it anyway. I got to see Tool before the pandemic shut in 2020. Everyone in the crowd was shooting video but it definitely takes away from the show. Having said that, when you're paying what you paying to see a show and there are no more hard tickets to keep as mementos, I don't have an issue getting a couple of shots or short videos of the show. When concert tickets cost 100s of dollars a seat to see a band, it's about the event and enjoying the show, and that's hard to do with everyone and their grandmother with their phones up and out standing up and in the way. I get it.
Me too. I feel like it's a real waste of money to go to a concert just so you can record it with your phone. Like, why not watch a full concert on UA-cam instead?
Nothing's more punk rock than throwing people out of your concert for playing with their own electronic devices.

Only one that really bothers me is when someone is holding up an iPad above their head to record, that's actually obnoxious.

Last show i went to was a Slayer show where 90% of the crowd watched the entire show through their cell phones it was extremely obnoxious and nothing like the experience of a slayer show 10+ years ago. Strongly agree with Maynard

I think his passion on the topic is completely understandable. as he said in the raleigh show, if you cant manage to keep it off for a few hours to enjoy yourself at a live setting...youve got a problem (one thing if its an emergency but usually its not). he grew up in an era where this wasnt an issue, so to him its just sad to see people obsessed with their phones and needing to get rememberances as if they wont remember without it. I always want to record to show my friends, but hes right, it never does the scene justice in a recording.
