      And at that point, as she should be. She wasn't a monster, but she wasn't a saint, either. I know this was for drama, but it was factual even if unsaid. Prince Phillip was her "Strength and Stay." He had his own foibles as well, but overall, they don't make Men like him anymore.

      She saw herself as the matriach of a new royal family dynasty. King George VI died aged only 56, I think she expected to be queen for at least another thirty years. Unfortunately, she forgot the British penchent for ignoring hubris but rewarding arrogance with irrelevance. Thus, she may very well be a queen, but she was not THE queen and dowager queens who try to stay relevant and influential tend to live out what little time they have left locked away in an attic somewhere.

    • @DenaInWyo
      @DenaInWyo 5 місяців тому +6

      @@maxjjackson She was actually lucky to have a fairly loving relationship with THE queen. She got to be a lot more relevant than most Queen mothers. Well, except maybe Margaret Beaufort ;) Now THAT was an alligator of a Queen Mum! But really, she was the very last of an already dying era of royalty. I agree she did indeed view herself as the start of a dynasty, and she was, but did not realize she was also the end of the culture of royalty as unquestioned and untouchable.

      I think family was always important to Queen Elizabeth II. Not only the Royal House of Windsor (family with a capital F, if you like) the one she had to share with history, the country and the future, the day job, which was referred to as 'The Firm' (haha), but her family family, private, that she watched tv with in the evenings after work. That She loved her mother, father and sister is not in doubt. Margaret reputedly once said something like 'She wanted her sister Elizabeth back not Queen Elizabeth, the joyless ghoul that had replaced her.' 'Well, you can't, she's far too busy doing a job nobody else can do!' Which of course came up again when Anne 'toured' the States.

    The Queen, or ANY monarch is not "required" to offer an apology..... but when they DO, especially of their own free will and accord, it means far more than you can imagine. It proves, that they (the one wearing the crown) can understand, and acknowledge, the feelings of their subjects and shows that their willingness to admit "failures". Especially in the situation of "conduct" in regard to what has the APPEARANCE of royalty and what doesn't. After all, there is someone who you can point to and say "That is an example of regal behavior", it SHOULD be the one wearing the crown and those around them.
    So for the Queen to come out and admit that it was a "bad year" due to the "public scandals" involving the royal family? Well, it just shows the general public that those scandals have hurt her the MOST because it was a failure of BOTH the "public duty" of the royal family, as well as a "private disappointment" in the individual family members that were involved in each of them. Meaning that those members of the royal family not only failed to live up to the public's expectations, but HER (as the Queen) expectations as well.

      @lexusdriver1963. I disagree because Prince Philip does indeed defend the queen's "peace of mind". Prince Philip really doesn't seem to be "done with this" if he is willing to put his two cents in. He is loyal and protective of the monarchy but Philip probably didn't want the monarchy to "close in" on his Lilibet. Windsor Castle is burning and Charles and Diana are divorcing and Andrew and Fergie are divorcing. Queen Elizabeth knew what the public was thinking and she maybe wanted to admit to herself that she was only human underneath her crown. The queen mum was angry about the wording of the speech and how it reflects on the monarchy but the queen mum also meant well for her daughters legacy, so you see a duality here. A very poignant scene....

    Precisely the Queen Mother's problem was the conception of the divinity and perfection that the monarch and the royal family represent until the end of her life. Something that even at that time the other royal houses and States left aside as an excuse to be where they are. Humanity and transparency have always been the defect of the English monarchy in my opinion (although it has improved in recent times). They have tried and exhausted to cement traditional ideas of the unreachable and divine where they have no defects or problems. However, the opposite is achieved, people move away, there is no belonging or empathy, that was largely one of the reasons for the fall of different monarchies in history.
    The Queen Mother undoubtedly lived in the past, as exposed in other season, where she reluctantly expounds words more or less like "in the past they revered us and now we are the ones who have to be the subjects of the people."
    In short, it used to work not to apologize, because the representative and imposed by God did not need to apologize and say that it was a horrible year. But the people no longer believe in that, the monarch's position on humanity changed. The monarch is a man, a woman, who must be sensitive, empathetic and who, despite everything, has feelings inside, no matter how much he hides them, as was the Queen.

      Sad but true. Queen Mary, must have been rolling in her grave. This is probably going against the upbringing of how Queen Elizabeth, was raised and not one person be it the press or family gave Elizabeth, any credit for " this great gift of support and an open mind" that she once possessed. Diana and Charles and the Duke of Windsor and Wallis and Philip and Margaret never seemed grateful for the queen's support. Being a reigning queen maybe they all wanted her to take their problems away with just a snap of her fingers! Queen Elizabeth, really did try to keep up with the modern times unfolding but unfortunately they also unraveled about her! Sad but I think the "adults" in her family greatly USED her!! Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth 🎉🎉🎉❤.

      I disagree. Though he had a hard time adjusting to his role (given that it was the 50's & 60's and he not only had to accept that she was the head of the house but that he was actually subservient to her) he encouraged her to step up to the senior politicians and to stand her ground to forge the path ahead on multiple occasions.
      Sure he is not a hero, particularly when looking at the scandals he was involved in but it is also true that even even when he disagreed with her he always encouraged her to speak her mind. Same thing in this clip. So I would argue, that he did not change his tune.

    Apology is a sign that you realise your mistake and respect others feeling. If you feel like your action is wrong and hurted others feelings that nothing is wrong in apologising .
    God treat his children equally and want his children to realise their mistake , repent for it and by asking for apology from both god and one whom got hurted by you , you are following gods rules .
    Queen believed in christianity a lot .she was very kind , down to earth , caring , loving naturally but throne demands something else from her .but in 1992 she understand that her people is hurt and she also did mistakes that leads to so much problems in her children life .she apologised to her people and also asked for gods forgiveness (she is following gods ways in this matter ).
    Queen mother was a narcissist , rude , manipulative , greedy , proud and most dangerous women in the whole europe .she thinks of herself as high and wanted to control everyone. She wanted the queen to be dependent on her so that she can control her . She refused to give advanced education to queen .because it gives wisdom , independence for queen . But queen did gain knowledge and acted independently in some matters . Queen mother always behaved sweet and played favourites game with heir to the throne. elizabeth ii was wise and independent so queen mother chose narcissist ways like always taunted , scolded which broke queen self confidence and made queen dependent on her mother always .she also interfered in queen marriage life and also had a lots of influence in charles life which cost so much loss in both of their lives . Queen mother after her husband death didnt want to lose power and control so she never bowed to queen and made sure queen always feel she is below her mother and always must depend on her mother because her mother is wise ,strong and experienced . She was successful in that . She lived a luxurious life and left high debt and dead .queen repayed all of it . Unfortunately queen loved her mother and didnt understands real face of her mother .
