    I lived in Jax for almost 6 years and used the monorail twice, just for fun. It takes you nowhere. Really short ride that doesn't solve any traffic problem.

      So true. When i lived in Jacksonville this was being built and lots of hype for it especially when they said it would go from downtown to regency area and future to the beaches. They planned to expand all over the city and to Orange Park but they price tag was so high and delay after delay it was just a money drain.

    This is the type of system we need in Orlando, the Sunrail is a nice system for people who live in the outskirts, but we need a monorail system that services the major in town arteries of our city from north, south, east, and west of OIA, including the theme parks. Great video Luke.

    It's a real shame that people who plan infrastructure view these as a novelty outside Japan. Korea has the new echobee and china only seems to use the, for minor links to airports etc. With the correct route that picks up residents to major shopping districts we should be able to get people out of there cars and still make a reasonable profit

    Just got back from shooting video there. I think this completes my visitation to every fixed guideway system in North America that is higher than a streetcar. On the first day there they had a single car serving both branches to Central but NOT the trunk downtown. No announcements or signage. Just get on and hope it gets to your stop eventually, or just walk if you get tired of waiting. A total shit show of anger and frustration. JTA sucks balls. After enjoying some good bus rides, I was stranded for the most important one, my return to the airport! Had to call a lyft and waste $30. They decommissioned the text for schedule system but all the signs still show the stop numbers. On the second day they ran somewhat normal service, though one train changed direction at Central without warning. Headway was around 15 minutes. In the PM rush there were a couple of 'choice' riders going to the Park n Ride at Kings Ave. I saw lots of folks changing buses at the new La Vila terminal, but very few came up to the Skyway. Downtown is dead, this was in perfect 70 degree weather. Rosa Parks is surreal. Only one bus lane is needed, and it is surrounded by vacant land in three directions. Like so many cities, Jacksonville has great bones - a hundred thousand people should be there living car free and enjoying real community. Maybe someday that will happen. I think the future autonomous system is a good idea and hopefully something can be made of the place once people discover that endless motoring is gone for good.

      joel k I know, many places that say MONORAIL are actually not monorail. This is a rare exception. I would love it if Jacksonville kept it and expanded it but they are taking about replacing the older technology (with less available replacement parts) with a PRT POD system. I think even that sounds far fetched. I don’t know what Jacksonville will look like in 5 or 10 years.

      @@Luke_Starkenburg The plan is to keep the structure in place, but replace the trains with autonomous vehicles (JTA is currently testing several types as its test track). The trains will run both on the current elevated track and then come down to ground level to run into nearby neighborhoods. JTA hopes to expands the current 2.5 miles Skyway into a 10 mile network of on-demand autonomous vehicles (currently testing the NAVYA from France). There will also be a new station in Brooklyn/Riveside, as well as the new Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center across from the convention center.

      JTAFLA I really hope this actually happens! I’m curious what the speed of the vehicles will be and how they will be expanded into different neighborhoods at ground level. They will be, that much is a fact, though from the camera view at central, the greyhound station is no longer there and is now across the street from the currently closed convention center station --- the Jefferson station is also closed for the same reason --- as part of building the new Regional Transportation Center (JRTC), where Greyhound, JTA, and Amtrak (maybe even Megabus at some point) will all be located. As for where the skyway will likely be extended, that's the Sports Complex (where the Jags, the Jumbo Shrimp (baseball), and the Icemen (hockey) play, the riverside area, north of the rosa parks station heading to UF Shands hospital, and south from the kings avenue station to the san marco area, with another branch line to Baptist Medical Center (downtown location)

    Just when you thought the public transportation system in Jacksonville couldn't get any worse, the skyway's efficiency nose dives. Jealous of the inefficiency of the busses and their drivers, the skyway pattern has changed for the 3rd time in as many months. The marquee only work when they feel like it, if it's not covered with a banner saying: Out of Order! This is how you manage a busted vending machine, not a mode of public transportation. The announcements regarding the train's next destination are only audible if you're actually ON one of the trains. Top it all off with the fact that these trains are nothing more then elevated sidewalks for bums to beg from you, and you have the perfect storm of incompetence, apathy from its management, and criminal activity. Once on the train, the doors sometimes close, sometimes they remain open for well over 5 minutes. Sometimes, an "employee" will rudly, and without explanation, demand you ride in a different car of the train. They used to pretend to CLEAN the cars, giving a cursory wiping down of the poles due to covid, and sometimes I think they just do it to show how rude they can be. Jacksonville's JTA isn't one to short change you when they dole out the unprofessional behavior. No, sir! If you weren't spoken to like a junkyard dog by a bus driver, they'll make sure to have their staff crawl up to a skyway platform and verbally vomit on you THERE. OR, a transient may ACTUALLY vomit on you. JTA's motto is: "Meh. Good enough." When trying to figure out the times of the bus departure, you can download SEVERAL apps. Why? Because ONE of them has to be accurate, right? WRONG! The MyJTA app tells users a bus is coming to a certain stop, then YourBus says there are "No predictions at this time" for the same bus. I guess JTA likes surprises. Like making you late for work even though you had to leave home 2 hours before your shift because JTA is already so inefficient, you have to. Another surprise they enjoy springing on you is switching skyway routes so the track one would take through downtown, now takes you across the river to San Marco! SURPRISE! They make sure the marquis are out of order so you can enjoy THIS surprise as you realize you're about to cross the Acosta bridge. And be late for work. Realizing you could've been early for work, had you just walked the ONE MILE there. So, yes, JTA's system is so flawed, they can't get ONE MILE without mucking it up. To add insult to injury, the busses have photos of their employees and announcements proclaiming they've won myriad awards for their services. They MUST be giving these awards to themselves. I can't imagine anyone with sound mind could possibly experience JTA's botchedy system and award them anything but sideways glances and disgust. In closing, the only thing JTA's good for is drumming up business for Uber, Lyft, and local car dealerships.

    it looks like a Huge Infrastructure for just these two little trains. how often do they run? every 5 minutes? every 15? 30? that's a major determining factor of how well a transport system is used, how frequent and reliable are the rides?

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  4 роки тому

      It is a lot of infrastructure, but its more than 2 trains. During rush hour (peak hour) I think they run about every 5 minutes. It's great that they are automated and don't need a driver or attendant. They can run additional trains when needed without having to worry about extra labor costs. Jacksonville is talking about replacing the track and trains with PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) vehicles using the existing bridge structure. The PRT Pods would use the elevated structure for part of the route and then continue on the ground/surface level.

      From 2012-2016 there were just under 5 million rides taken on the Skyway. In 2017-2018, stations were closed for nearby construction so park-n-ride usage dropped off. Tannawannavannabit Tannawannavannabit true. When this was planned it sounded great cause they said it would go all over the city. The first leg was downtown then spread to the southside regency area. Move to the beaches. Go to Mandarin area than to Orange Park. The rub was that small 1/16TH of a mile cost the taxpayers billions and took a decade to build. We called it the train to nowhere cause it was built so short and in an area where not many wanted to go. You could literally walk faster from one station to the other.
