I agree that street running has some historical value and nostalgia, because it marks an era that is rapidly disappearing across the country. However, the primary customer of the South Shore Line are commuters traveling too and from work in the Chicago area. In the evening most commuters just want to get home as quickly as possible, and spend time with their family. The truth is this upgrade in the speed of the South Shore Line is badly needed for commuters who want to get home quicker.
You'll probably get the reference at the end of the video.

The "Polar Express" could be filmed in live action there. Really atmospheric with the snow falling. Great video.
There's just some things that are part of Americana and should stay!
They have ruined one of the most nostalgic treasures in America.
The footage looks so cool in the snow
The South Shore Line is dead to me now.
Another bone head move just like franklin square years back.
I'm surprised they don't keep the street running trains running until the bypass is finished
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like like they did back in 1954
The construction of the double tracks are coming along from what I can tell, I live a half mile from where you shot this.
Always need two tracks if they want to run more trains
Mmh beautiful winter nights and snow :3
used to take the train when i lived in nw indiana.
Great video!
Super cool video
When are trains supposed to return to Michigan City?
why street running train is declining? and why the heck these tracks are becoming gone?
So, does that mean the street running line will be abandoned?
I don’t understand not a heck different than the crappy Gov.Ventura train in MPLS. &St. Paul.
