The Miami system is a way bigger success for three reasons in my option:
    1. Connects with the main train stations and bus terminals.
    2. Runs from 5am to midnight everyday.
    3. Goes to a ton of different neighborhoods that are culturally and economically connected.
I go from University of Miami in Coral Gables to Sunny Isles every once in a while and I always take it to get from Government center to Arsht bus terminal.

Yup, and when Tri-Rail serves MiamiCentral, it'll be another connection on top of the Brightline and Metrorail! A system that runs in a similar way to the Metromover is the Bukit Panjang LRT in Singapore, which serves 13 stations in the neighborhood of Bukit Panjang and parts of Choa Chu Kang with connections to the MRT North-South Line (and Jurong Region Line in 2027) at Choa Chu Kang and the Downtown Line at Bukit Panjang. Unlike the Metromover, the windows on the BP LRT are special because they fog up when it runs close to residential buildings, which was the result of complaints from residents.

Of the three people mover systems built for public transit in the US (Detroit, Jacksonville, and Miami), only the Miami system was fully built to it's orginal design length. Is it any wonder why the other two failed? They were never supposed to stay that short for very long. They are shorter than the minimumly permanently viable system.

Jacksonville native here. No, they will not be replacing the transit system with autonomous pods. It’s currently in the planning phase. But just like every other project in downtown Jacksonville, it’ll fail. So those rails will slowly deteriorate and become abandoned until the end of time. Just like everything else in this sad, pathetic city.

Rather #JTA stops wasting time on these unproven low-floor (doesn't look high-floor that would be compatible with the existing #Skyway station platforms with minimal modifications) autonomous pods that can not only have technological problems but also, due to surface-running support plans, service problems where the streets could disrupt #Skyway services in more ways than if #Skyway remains fully grade separated. #JTA would be better off using funds more wisely in reverting the #Skyway back to being an APM system even if it means using a different yet globally proven APM/AGT system as seen not only in airports but also urban transit systems such as #metrotaipei's Brown line (#Alstom's VAL-compatible INNOVIA APM), #Singapore's LRTs (#Mitsubishi's Crystal Mover and #Alstom INNOVIA APM), #Tokyo's Yurikamome (#Mitsubishi Urbanismo) and Nippori-Toneri Liner, etc.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks the new replacement idea for the Skyway is ridiculous. Really wish they would just extend the current system to Riverside & Springfield rather than have autonomous "pods" come down to street level to serve those neighborhoods. There used to be more daily riders before COVID, which hit downtown really hard. Anyway, apparently Brightline has been in regular talks with JTA and some other folks to bring commuter rail to connect St. Johns county to Jax, and should be using the old Jacksonville Terminal railway station (now a convention center) that is right next the fancy new bus station.

Also, had they maintained the original VAL APM system, IMO #JTA would've been able to expand and upgrade #Skyway to better serve existing and new riders over wasting funds for some new trending tech like consumer electronics easily upgradable within a few years. And yes, autonomous pods brought down to street level, not a good idea and goes back to the consumer electronics trend style fund-wasting. If #JTA really wants to maintain the driverless function, #JTA should prioritize reverting the system back to an APM system and building more #Metromover-style APM infrastructure.

The elevator moved because you said hello to it! This is why it is very important to be friendly to the elevator and thank it! Here's some Jacksonville lore: In the 16th century, the beginning of the historical era, the region was inhabited by the Mocama, a coastal subgroup of the Timucua people. The St. Johns River was once called Welaka, or river of lakes, a name of Seminole-Creek origin. In 1562, French Huguenot settlers landed at the mouth of the St. Johns River and later established Fort Caroline. Then the Spanish invaded Fort Caroline in 1565, renaming it San Mateo to honor the saint whose feast followed the day they captured the river.
Later, the river was renamed Rio de San Juan after a mission near its mouth named San Juan del Puerto. The English translation of the name Rio de San Juan, St. Johns River, has lasted through English, Confederate and now today. In 1822, Jacksonville was named for Andrew Jackson. At the time, Jackson was the military governor of the Florida territory. Jacksonville became an official port of entry that year. Duval County was created that year as well from St. Johns County. It was named for William Pope Duval, who succeeded Jackson as Governor of Florida Territory from 1822 to 1834. Since then, the city has grown as a national logistics center.

Ah yes, dots, peeling paint, flickering lights, sketchy elevators, and no vulgar language, a truly state of the art system. That Drake & Josh clip added in was stellar! I still can't believe both Josh Peck AND Devon Bostick/Rodrick Heffley were in Oppenheimer...what a timeline we're living in. The Skyway is a cute little guy! Up there with the Glasgow Subway, Princeton Dinky, and MTR Disneyland Resort Line. The announcements are just like AirTrain JFK! I too have been fascinated with monorail switches. There's a viral clip of Japanese monorail track switching from Osaka, and it's just so interesting to watch. I gotta give kudos to Jacksonville for having a Skyway station within their Transportation Authority headquarters as part of the transit center at LaVilla.
The rolling stock is Bombardier, but it wasn't always that way. They used to have rubber-wheeled vehicles designed by Matra. That changed in 1997 and the Matra ones were given to O'Hare for the ATS, which in turn were also replaced by Bombardier with the Innovia APM 256s. The bridge is called the Acosta Bridge, named after councilman St. Elmo W. Acosta. It was constructed in 1990 and opened in 1994. It replaced the St. Johns River Bridge that opened in 1921. It was replaced because not only was it old, but it was also a three-lane carrying lift bridge and thus got the nickname Yellow Monster because of the times it was upward.

Jacksonvillian here, you actually went over my house in San Marco. You know how many times I’ve ridden the Skyway in the last 40 years? Just a handful. It goes nowhere. You can walk across all three bridges in the time it takes to wait for it to pick you up and take you in the right direction. Pretty much the only time it has any traffic is during events like Jazzfest. If they expanded the routes into Riverside, Springfield, Murray Hill, Ortega, or even Mandarin there would be a reason to take it. But Jax HATES public transportation, the only reason it still exists is because they spent so much money on it in the 80s. I still remember when my mother took me on it when it opened, what a waste.

The city of Jacksonville regularly ignored their engineers and screwed up. Failing to put in the promised parking lots for the Landing (lack of parking killed it), running the skyway to the stadium, landing, south bank, and convention center so it could help with Jaguar games and other major events (it goes nowhere), 3-laning 295 eastbound (they're having to do it now), fixing Liberty St (which would collapse into the river almost exactly when he said it would), and putting in parking garages downtown and connecting them to the Matthews, Hart, and Main St. bridges. Of all the things I was told about 4 of the 5 came to pass. 5th will never happen because it's too intelligent.

The whole "the cars may break at any moment" thing reminds me of the Moscow Monorail. It was built in 2004 and for the last few years there have been talks of closing the system down. It has only two trains in use and the repair parts for them are hard to come by. But the system sees a lot of use because it links metro lines 6 and 9 (nice) and Ostankino district (with the famous TV broadcasting center in it). The city plans to replace it with a tram.
EDIT: apparently they scrapped the tram idea and instead they are going to renovate the trains, make them more frequent and then develop new driverless trains. It's not set in stone yet though.

Summary: Jacksonville took so long in planning and building it that by the time it was done the population it was meant to serve moved away. Jacksonville could keep this running if they want. The technology was bought by Bombardier and eventually gave all the info to JTA for free for them to take to any company to make spare parts. There are cars from other former networks that they could also buy and refurbish. And the technology isn't really outdated, but nobody around wants to learn it. It sounds like, no.... and if that's the case they just gotta kill it but I'd be super curious.

Too bad the #Skyway is not using the original VAL people mover system anymore because IMO someone corrupted the #JTA into joining the monorail bandwagon that didn't really provide much more benefits to the #Skyway than the original VAL system since the Monorail infrastructure is sitting on top of the original VAL guideways which still cast the same amount of shadow below like when it was still a VAL system.

  • @sammytheseaslugg7711
    @sammytheseaslugg7711 Рік тому +17

I used to work on the team developing the "pods" that will replace the Skyway. Yes, pods are weird and untested. Rail would've been better. BUT. The reason why the JTA went with pods is financial. 1) The FTA funded the Skway back in the 80s, and will not let it be demolished outright. So, the JTA has to use the guideway for something. 2) Research & Development Grants. The federal gov't has a fund for transit projects that use new, untested, innovative tech. So, by using "pods" on their Skyway, the JTA is getting three birds with one stone. Meeting the FTA's requirement that they keep the guideway, tapping into a unique pool of federal transit funding for R&D projects, and updating the obviously useless Skyway.
So yea, pods don't make sense until you look at it from a federal funding/constraints lens. The JTA knows that rail/buses would be better, they know that AVs are a major risk, but with the money available, and under these constraints, "why not." We'll see if the project launches like it's slated to in 2025, I won't hold my breath

If that's the case Brightline would need to come to agreement for operations with them, too.

I think the Orlando rail system is also weekdays-only, which is why I haven't yet driven 90 miles to Orlando to ride it. Would love to see a trip report of the Tampa Bay area bus, streetcar, and airport rail system routes. Maybe see how far north one could even go on local buses from Wimauma, FL toward Brooksville, FL.
