My doctor was surprised when I asked “How are you?”
She said “Fine”, but it was said by rote.
My voice tone dropped and I asked again, “No really, how are YOU doing?”
She was surprised and almost cried. I won’t go into anything more … but I appreciate her

That is really lovely of you. I do that with my dr too, I go through a list of things, home life, work & just in general as I am his last patient & everyone has gone, he will sometimes tell me, he can sound a bit pissed off because he still has loads of calls to patients, he would be there for 7am & leaves well after 7pm, plus he works one or two shifts in emergency at the weekend, he does way too much & I know he is pissed off about being vaccinated, he said he had to otherwise he wouldn't be helping people like me, he warned me NO, glad I didn't get it.

Sage choice for topic; I’ve worked in hospitals for 21 years and this is the first time I’ve heard this topic addressed. Veterinarians have high rates of suicide as do dentists. Two years ago our chief of outpatient medicine, a resident, committed suicide - a heart rending loss to his colleagues, nurses, and patients. You, Dr. K., are a breath of fresh air.

What an incredible doctor you are to be able to talk about this problem.I see an anaesthesiologist ,who runs a pain clinic ,and I don’t know how he does it,so just to show my appreciation I take him afternoon tea as I know he gives his all to making his patients feel better. It’s just one way I can say thank you and I always ask how he is,I have put my life in his hands ,so I hope one day it doesn’t get too much and he takes his life. Then I would be finished and my life would be over.❤

May I humbly share as a Registered Nurse and devout Christian, we are living in a fallen world. Healthcare providers are far from perfect, but are forced to portray that we have all the answers. God help us to be real and do the very best that we can under the realistic circumstances. This is a wonderful share. Thank you!

I could not agree more with you. We have - my husband and I - been unbelievably, miraculously blessed with Christian physicians. I had a very big valve sparing root aneurysm repair. The large ATAA that I had was found accidentally and caused by a congenital BAV which I never knew i had my whole life. I was referred to Tomas Martin, director of the heart hospital, at UF Shands, Gainesville, FL. I researched him and he always prays with his patients. I don't see how a surgeon, for any amount of brilliance, could do such amazing work without believing it 'isn't just me'. Dr. Martin believes that his shills are all for God's glory. Knowing his faith gave such peace to me going into surgery. As a cardiothoracic surgeon responsible for this kind of surgery, knowing where his abilities come from must be a real comfort for him as well.

Sadly these issues are similar in Australia. I worked for many years with highly esteemed university's medical school. I was genuinely shocked at the unwritten rules of hierarchy that fostered an underlying culture of bullying. Insidious and hard to define. No education for staff or students around this subject either even in the 21st century. Doctors (and nurses and allied health and their support staff ) are humans. The Oncologist who treated the breast cancer I experienced killed himself a few years ago at age 50. All those years studying and then gaining experience lost. Yes I cried when I heard. He was also affiliated with the same university.
Thank you for speaking with us about this difficult and sad subject.

I had one doctor in the military that actually was concerned about my well being after another surgeon botched my hip surgery. Their is a code of silence which I've noticed within the doctor community that they will not speak ill of another severe errors. Thats the problem is this quota system that harms people.

I was always concerned just as much about our Soldiers mental health as much as physical health. Especially Medic who has so much to deal with. Even years later the PTSD affects health. The ability to access healthcare. I made a nurse cry by just asking her how she was doing today. How are you coping. She said no one has asked her how she was for weeks. Now I always ask how my Doc is doing. Acknowledging healthcare systems do not look after the physicians well being.

    • @kmdn1
      @kmdn1 Рік тому +1

That goes for most professions I would think. It would be incredibly unprofessional anywhere to speak ill of a peer, even more so if they were not present during the procedure or involved in any way. Even if a doctor did internally question the judgement of another doctor who performed a procedure, it would be incredibly rash for them to make an assumption and if they expressed that to a patient I would consider that a big red flag!! Talking badly of a peer, especially a doctor who went through just as much training and education as you did, and to a patient??! To me, as a patient, that would signify some sort of fragile ego, lack of confidence, narcissistic traits, unprofessionalism and questionable judgement.
There would just be no useful purpose in talking badly of a peer to a patient

Hi Dr. I'm really surprised that you're talking about such a sensitive but, important issue. People that are slightly older are used to thinking of doctors as being perfect. I struggle with my parents to help them to understand that they're just people too and you can ask them questions. I remember my late husband telling me that dentists were among the highest in suicides. I never really thought about doctors. My daughter is in the medical field and I can tell how much of her heart she puts into her job and that it's easy to get burned out. Also, when one of her patients passes away it hits her hard and there's no time to recover. I think it's really brave of you to make this video. My Hope Is that people will be more sensitive and patient with their doctors. It can't be easy having to be so strong and reassuring to everyone all the time. They have to remember to take time for themselves. My late husband was a psychotherapist and he used to tell me that doctors often have to seek therapy. Everybody needs to vent. Thank you for another awesome video!!

Since the pandemic we have discovered it doesnt matter how you feel or whats going on your dr is required to prescribe whatever meds they are currently selling and they must relay the same propaganda as the media or lose their license I never ever go to the dr and I've instructed my family in the end Do Not take me to a hospital. I need to return to my comment after listening to this entire video ... I just want to thank you with some depth of appreciation... The world seems to believe cover-up the errors because people will lose trust in the medical field ..."flaws should never be revealed". That doesn't make sense ... transparency corrects mistakes and helps people get well. Damn I have so much to say here.... this brokenness is not just limited to healthcare... banking, judicial system, pilots, flight, attendants etc... this is a pandemic of broken trust... how do we establish trust.... by honesty... I have always said that “I am my best advocate.” No one knows your body than you! You live in it 24/7 and the physician only gets to see you for 15/30 minutes at a time. Always tell your doctor “Thank you” if he/she has helped you in anyway no matter how slight, it’s still to make you feel better.

I am going through this right now. I am changing my PCP due to lack of care, being dismissed, not listening to me(I know my body) AND absolutely NO follow-up. I received an email from the owner of the clinic wanting me to take a survey on my care from my doctor. (There are 15 PCP's in this clinic - 10-15 minutes per patient) I was honest about what I have endured for a year and a half including medical gaslighting. All of a sudden, the doctor is calling wanting to see me for a 30 minute visit because he was concerned about my health (NO. HE LOST MY TRUST). His nurses called everyday for a week. I've found a new PCP I see next week. I feel bad for the PCP I left. He is in a business pressure cooker, that I had to suffer for. Physician, DO NO HARM, TO ME OR YOURSELF. SAD😔

    • @trishlett40

I am sorry for what you have/are going through. Is a PCP a Personal Care Physician? I know what you are talking about, I am so lucky to have such a great dr who is so open minded, he is English like me, he does his own research he even mentioned micro dosing with magic mushrooms to me last visit 2 weeks ago but he said he still needs to do more research, I doubt they have become legal here in Australia. I did watch the dock on Netflix called "Changing Your Mind" I think.
I referred my son in laws' cousin to him, I could read into the questions she was asking me about him that she had breast cancer & she said she hates drs, I never let on to her I guessed. Moving forward 4 years & because of her hate for drs she refused to go for chemo, he isn't a big believer in chemo, I think he tells me these kind of things because a) he can trust me & b) because of my previous position as Practice Manager, paying, hiring & firing drs, plus I knew his brother who is also a dr.
There is a very tight click where I live, yes a massive country but they all know of, or heard of each other from referrals or medical conventions etc.
He was telling me at one visit quite some time ago that a hospital Oncologist had reported him to AHPRA --- Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency who can & do strip drs of their medical licence.
He had been reported because his patient refused chemo at the time, I said well that's the patient's decision, you can't force them to go. I guessed the patient was the culprit. I saw her at soccer sitting in the passenger seat with a carer at the wheel watching her daughter from the car as she could no longer walk as the cancer had spread quite some time previous to her pelvis. I guess she felt she could confide in me telling me that the cancer had now spread to her brain because of my own brain tumour. She also told me how she got our dr in trouble by refusing chemo & then changed her mind, I guess this Oncologist thought she may have had more of a chance doing the treatment.
The point I am trying to make is it's simple, they can't do anything to him, the patient supports him, it was her choice BUT because he is known for his alternative treatments he is hated by the rest of the medical profession & they want him gone.
Sorry to carry on but an example is, he believes me when I told him that Gadolinium (MRI Contrast) does not leave the body like they say "the kidneys will remove it from your body in 24hrs, drink plenty of water. Which is total BS. I have it in writing from a Radiology Lecturer & Researcher that there is no biological pathway for it to excrete. My dr is happy to treat me if I could get more information. I was in touch with "world expert" on Gadolinium Deposition Disease in the US Dr Richard Semelka who advised me not to try chelation therapy because of my anaphylaxis to it a couple years back, I was at high risk maybe even being fatal trying to remove this rare earth metal which is used to make microwaves & freezers from my body.
So I know what it means especially talking to & reading the stories of the desperate people in America who are in so much pain as it stores everywhere in the body. A Neurosurgery Reg told me my brain lights up like a Christmas tree. So to have a good dr is such a privilege. One dr I worked with said so many drs only qualify because they have a good memory. And finally this Oncologist told the cousin "you only have a few weeks to live". I asked if he told her just like that, she said "exactly like that." Good luck with your new dr, I would be intrigued though what your previous dr has to say after requesting half hour consult with you.

Your story mirrors the experience of so many- and unfortunately is way more widespread and prevalent than just in medicine. I left my former job because of a similar situation- but as an employee. Never in my six years working there, did the regional manager or any of those "big dogs" ever try to speak with me. The one time they came to the office I worked in, they looked like kids in a field trip- they had absolutely no prior experience in the field of the business they were running- not a single clue what was going on. When I got sick of decisions being made by dissociated suits and ties and put in my notice, all of a sudden they were emailing me and calling me and sending me surveys every other day, for months. Surveys! 😂 If they had a clue about the field of business they claim to be running or bothered to ever meet or listen to the people who worked there day after day, they wouldnt need a survey. And good workers wouldn't be quitting.
It's almost comical how frantic they get the second they actually listen to the people. Where was all that time and effort when it counted?

I left the Health System so I don’t know what happened to him outside of hearing he became a consultant. Drs are put under so much pressure and I’ve seen some changes in the health care system but not enough. Drs are still paid less to do more and it’s a messed up system all together. This is why there is such a shortage of some types of physicians. PCPs, Family practice, and more. You are a good man for talking about this because it’s not something that is widely known. ❤

Thank you for this video. I had my doctor of 15 years use me to get his drugs legally. I broke my femur due to a horse accident then rebroke it 2 more times in 6 months. I spent a year in the hospitals over this. After I got out my doctor wanted to write meds for pain, but I was not doing it. He then wrote meds under my name and had another pharmacy send them to his office. The DEA wanted to know why I was taking extreme amounts of pain meds. That's when my doctor got arrested and confessed he has strung out on them himself. He had to go to treatment and be disciplined. I had to get another doctor because of him. I'm in control of my health but trust is gone.

I am now disabled/retired, but as an RN that had such a stressful job. For example as the only RN (BSN) in the facilities I worked in, mostly with geriatric residents and over time transitioned to less nurses and more rehab and increased acuity of patients, the entire staff would be riding my license, I'd be the supervisor, and at times I would have up to 53 residents assigned to just myself that included an locked down dementia unit! One CNA per hall when we were lucky, but often they had a hall and a half to round on. During the evening meal I had to stop, lock up my medication cart (with a 2 hour window to still finish passing med.'s for all my residents), and feed 2 - 3 patients. And put on top of that emergencies, answering call lights, directing the staff, and putting out all kinds of fires. And the staff were often not supportive to each other, but just nasty. I've even had my life threatened by a male tech that I caught suffocating a helpless resident. So I totally get the stress aspect! On top of all the nursing alone duties WE NURSES were responsible for the orders the Dr.'s wrote or called in...yep. If they got it wrong it was up to us to catch their mistakes and tell them what to order! We were always the scapegoats and caught all the blame for every single little thing. In the mornings as we got off work on the 13 hour+ night shifts it felt like I had a thousand daggers in my back. I decided at some point to try to turn the attitudes around with positive reinforcement. I struggled to find staff doing something good and catch them at it and give them a good word, smile, pat on the back...whatever it took. I would stand at the time clock and thank each person as they left. Sometimes putting up a sign I made to say you are the best team! Great job tonight! anything to bring us up and out of that back biting and negative attitude that short staffed, overworked, and physically in pain and exhausted nurses and techs would be. I really tried hard to be not just a good nurse but a good leader. It was HARD. I pushed myself so hard, and I was a tiny person but I did the work of a grown man when it came to lifting patients and doing team work with my techs and other nurses. Pushing heavy beds and med carts and lifts...my little back is a mess and my hips are bone on bone...I have to use a wheelchair to leave the house in now to go to Dr.'s appointments...the only time I leave my home. I have had, and do have suicidal ideations...but would prefer it if Jesus would call me home before I have to do it myself. No need to report me, I'm not going to kill myself...that is a plan if something were to happen to my husband. I have no loved ones or friends that care about me that would come help me. I have no one, nor could I manage on my own in this state. I've suffered in chronic severe pain for decades now and I'm just done. DNR would be the tattoo for me! lol right on my chest. Seriously though, I hope I go first, as my husband is still able to handle things. I wouldn't be able to. No pity party, I didn't mean to write all that. I'm just venting and this is what little old people do I guess when they live mostly isolated.

Why isn't this part of the national conversation. Is this the reason I feel that I have been getting poor treatment that has nearly harmed me. Luckily my daughters are nurses and when I described the symptoms from the antibiotics that the doctor kept telling me to continue told me to discontinue asap. I left those doctors alone from this point. That can give a person PTSD and no trust in any doctor. You sound like a dedicated doctor who is getting a bad name from those who you speak of that have given up on patients and themselves. Their will always be an appreciative patient doc that will let you know that you are👍👍👍🥇🥇🥇

I worked in the medical field as a medical lab technologist and have seen firsthand what the stress and demand on medical professionals does to their physical and mental health. I also have learned that I have to be an advocate for my own health. I have taken family members with me to be extra ears and eyes, when contemplating surgeries/procedures. I had a surgeon I have worked with and known for a long time tell me that it is your body and your money and you need to make decisions of who you see, what you have done to your body and not be bullied by a medical professional.
I have been fortunate to have some wonderful medical professionals caring for me, but I also take time to care for them with cards of appreciation, words of appreciation, and some treats dropped off/given at the time of the visit can turn their day around.
Thank you for speaking on this sensitive but very important topic. Enjoy your videos and keep educating/informing us.👍👏😊❤️

Interesting things I learned when I volunteered at a Crisis Clinic Line in the states back in the 90's. At that time Doctors' had the highest suicide rates, followed by Police and then I think lawyers. I stopped here to google what the rate is today (as I haven't as yet listened to this post). Turns out Doctors' are still the highest, that just breaks my heart and boggles my mind. But now Dentists' have joined the list at No 2 and Lawyers' have jumped up from No 8 to No 3.
The other thing of note that stuck with me is that if it is suicide by gun, men shoot themselves in the head (to make sure its done right) and women shoot themselves in the heart bcos they don't want their face to be decimated. I also learned of how people will overtly tell you that's what they are going to do or they will covertly show you that's what they are planning to do by giving you nice memories or trinkets of theirs you liked or photos of you together younger etc. They will literally sign post that they are planning suicide and if you don't recognise the signs and intercede, they will commit suicide. One of the biggest indicators of this, is a huge lift in mood shortly before their suicide along with the gift giving or great memory making. The reason for this lift is because they have sorted the problem out, there is an end in sight now and they want their last days or weeks with loved ones to be happy. That is why it is always a good thing to ask them what is going on with them and also ask if they are planning suicide. The mind is a fascinating thing.

So everyone may now have healthcare insurance (maybe) but there is not sufficient healthcare for everyone.Sad and scary.

This is not a humane way for doctors to be forced to work under. I have been fortunate to see some really good doctors who take the time and listen to my concerns and questions. I had one doctor put his hand on my arm and tell me to let him worry about my health. He told me it was his job to worry and figure things out. I was so comforted by this but after listening to this video I understand just how under appreciated and overworked they are. It’s heartbreaking.

Thank you dear doctor. I went for decades with symptoms that finally were diagnosed as MS by MRI. I cannot tell you how many times I felt that the chart notes must have included (this woman is crazy). I am sure there were times they thought I was seeking drugs, and I have to laugh because I do not even take acataminaphen for a headache. It took a nurse practitioner in a very back water small town, to send me to a neurologist for the MRI, when I called her in a panic because I felt so dizzy I thought we were having an earthquake and was afraid to drive home. She did not brush me off, even though it was at the end of the day. She believed me that my symptoms were real and quite severe at that point. She had to be tired from seeing patients all day, but she found that human part of her and treated me accordingly. I am forever grateful to her for her professionalism and kindness, and for ignoring some derogatory chart notes that might have been lurking there. No one was more bowled over by this diagnosis than I was, but on the other hand, I wanted to send these results to every doctor who could not think out of the box at all, and imagine that perhaps I was not imagining my symptoms. I cried, more from relief, than grief, that this was going to change my life in ways I could not imagine. OK, so all this was the result of physicians not listening to me, and I suffered a long time for it. My hat is off to all the hard working nurse practitioners and doctors, who still manage to retain their hearts, and their humanity, when the truth is, this profession is not fit for anyone with an ounce of compassion. Something has got to chance for us all.

It’s very difficult when your scheduled to go in for surgery at 8am and it’s after Noon and have gone threw a shift chance and haven’t seen your Dr. or anesthesiologist as I’m trying to control my growing anxiety and nurses are very busy and have no information. Finally I went into a full blown embarrassing panic attack, one were it’s hard to catch your breath and your crying and only thoughts were to leave. Next thing I remember, I’m in the recovery room crying hysterically, Etc! Etc! NOW I’m supposed to go in for a breast biopsy. It’s been 3 months and trying to overcome this fear! My hospital experiences have not gone well for me! Anyways, glad I found your podcasts, your knowledge and explanations has helped but still at this point I still would rather get hit by a bus than go to a hospital for anything! If your not one to speak up for yourself in my 72 years of life and healthcare has become overwhelmingly frustrating and inhumane and insurance companies are an impossible nightmare to try an navigate. Also just a note, I don’t remember ever meeting my anesthesiologists before surgery or after, only nurses unless they didn’t identify themselves.
