The whole "supporting the industry" thing honestly feels a bit tired at this point. One has to ask if an industry that consistently devalues its essential workers - both animation staff in Japan and localization staff in the west - is even worth supporting. (And I'm not even pro-piracy, by principle at least.)
"Don't let piracy win!!!" large faceless corporation says as they commit what's frankly piracy in the form of Wage Theft by paying the translation staff what's basically pennies vs the quarter-to-three-quarter of a million dollars or more corporation spends just Licensing each episode of a show
But hey, they have a cute, Wendy's-like mascot so I guess that makes treating the people making them their fortunes like shit ig.
@@erufailon4723 if you want to support the industry, you’re better off doing things like supporting the animator dorm project, buying stuff from voice actors when they visit cons and shilling for anime and artists you like instead of the corporations. Support and vote for politicians that are actually pro worker and put pressure on crunchyroll for paying poverty wages

Shoutout to HIDIVE for cucking CR/Sony out of most of the shows airing in Summer/this season. Not sure how they did it, and I’d imagine it’s because CR is/was busy trying to get all the big shows in Fall, but kudos to them either way. Their service definitely needs work, but at least they pay their employees decent wages.
It's a lot simpler: a number of Japanese producers don't wanna do business with Sony/CR due to how monopolistic they are, so they look to an alternative like Sentai

Thank you for the hard work on this video! As someone's whose currently studying Japanese and aspiring to become a translator, thank you for speaking on their behalf once again. I have heard a great deal of translators not getting paid enough on their projects; this whole industry has a huge problem of not paying their workers livable wages. Video games, anime...etc. are exploiting their workers and its nice someone bringing awareness to this!

It was my childhood dream to be a language translator, as I love learning languages, they are a fun puzzle for me. I never wanted to get rich off of it, just be able to eat and live and follow my passion, maybe do something useful to make people happy in the world. Nope. Can't have any of that.

Shit like this makes me wonder why I’m even paying for a subscription. Most of my money seems to just be going into the pockets of executives, not the people who actually make the show, not the people who translate it, heck not even into making the platform itself more usable. I justified paying for this fairly expensive service I barely use because I wanted to support the industry, but that doesn’t seem to hold up much anymore against corporate greed.

I knew from the start that it was mainly a name re-branding because yeah, Crunchyroll's name does have more reach than Funimation's, especially on an international level but I too naively figured that meant they would still be maintaining Funimation's pay rate for translators, as well as some of their business practices (more in-house employees rather than only contractors). It's pretty depressing. I've actually been more informed with the merger's effect on the dub side of things, which could be a whole topic on its own beyond what's been touched on here - so it's just not great on so many levels...

So as most people feared, this mergers as benefited no one! Much of the the innovations and progress they once made they are now undoing. The one good news is that workers at Seven Seas Publishing have unionized: will take the wins any way I can get them.

This video means a lot as someone who’s been in multiple different online translation groups (unpaid it was all out of passion) and who has recently gotten into lots o VO classes, seeing the two things I love to do having an industry that couldn’t possibly support me if I chose to go full time into it is heartbreaking and I hope for the sake of everyone who is either already in the industry or getting into it that things change sooner rather than later. Thank you so much for making this video!
Frankly speaking, I think they need to unionize. Also, it's not bullying when the supposed "victim" isn't adhering to a minimum standard for paying skilled labour.

A bad thing is that if a sub is bad, non Japanese-speaking people suffer the most.
When I see lines that make 0 sense, I blame the people that wrote the story that are trash, but never think to blame the distribution company, like Crunchyroll for underpaying their translators.

80 dollars per episode? There's a lot of work that goes into translating and that's all they got?
It's even worse when compared against how much these companies spend licensing shows (an interview a while back said new stuff can range from $250,000 to $750,000 per episode)
I have a friend who does freelance translation works for companies like this and they get paid basically nothing. A lot of execs have active scorn for anime and think it's shit because they refuse to 'let' it be good and actually give their translators time and money.
@@Hifuutorian Just shows they haven't understood why people watch anime to begin with, for me it's because I prefer mature or exceptional themed things, which I simply can not find at all on the western market. Heck even most Fantasy Stuff is just recycled stuff from Tolkien and the likes. The ordinary program doesn't move me at all emotionally, while I shed loooots of tears for animes like Madoka Magika, Magical Girl Raising Project, Rising of the Shield Hero or Reborn as a Slime.
Almost no movie, series or whatever I consumed in the past came even close to that, and that's exactly this magic coupled with deep stories me and other people are looking for.

Excellent video showcasing the problems people face translating for big corporations like Crunchyrolls. Translating isn't just converting literally the Japanese script into English. It's to transcribe the Japanese text in a way that is not only entertaining to an English speaking audience because many things can either be lost in translation or just does not translate well into English but also in a way as to bring justice to the original work. If translating was all translator do, they can probably be done in a couple of hours but as the video says, a small part of translating work actually involves translating and a majority of it revolves around researching. Anyways, this is just coming from a small time translator in the field.
It's the difference between human and machine translation. A neural model can do a fair job of converting words from one language to another, but not perfectly-and the process tends to lose cultural context, puns, and other subtleties along the way. ML just can't emulate the extra non-translation work that a human translator puts in.

It makes me really sad how the industry is really cursed... I'm working of the animation industry in France, and even in Europe or USA, we really have good conditions and salaries on TV Series ou movies.
I just don't understand how things cannot change when we know how much they produce and how much anime industry earns each year.
In Japan, even the subjects of seiyuus is just insane. WHY are they so well payed when without animators and other staffs, the anime can't even exist !!

JP VAs actually don’t make that much money starting out, only the established ones get well paid. And the established ones get well paid cause they’re not easily replaced and bring in profit because people will spend money just from their favorite seiyuu being in it, basically celebrities. Everyone deserves to be well paid of course, but the reason why well known seiyuus get paid handsomely is because it’s essentially like having a celebrity tied to the project

The fundamental problem is that in a profit-based economic system you will ALWAYS be exploited. All profit is just money that employees have created through their labor, but aren't getting paid. Until this system is replaced, employees will never be fairly compensated.
Until then however, fighting for your rights as a worker through unionization, collective consumer pressure, and supporting ethical organizations (preferably a co-op, though those aren't super common in this industry).
and the problem with NON PROFIT based economic systems like socialism is that people don't have shit and starve. Get educated. Free enterprise is the best economic system we have. Go visit Venezuela or cuba for a weekend and come back crying for mommy money.
I payed 3 years of CR mostly to support the industry since I had the money for it. But with the pandemic and the terrible working conditions I saw on the previous video of this author I went back to piracy again.

6:00 so great that I as an Latin American, got less access to the animes of HiDIVE because they stopped giving services to a bunch of Latin American countries ( and living in Central America, it means, my neighbor, Costa Rica is able to have access, but not Nicaragua, and El Salvador has access as well, both being neighbors in my country )

Translators get paid less and less every year in EVERY industry.
Mostly because new """"translators"""", usually kids, think they can do this job even for free. That's why real professionals get paid almost nothing, because there's always a newbie willing to do the job for crumbs.
People don't want 10/10 translations, they can't even tell a 5/10 and a 10/10 apart most of the times. They don't even read carefully most of the things they read, they only get upset when there's a single epic mistake in a translation. That's the harsh truth we have to face.

Their selection is relatively small, but there are a lot of hidden gems there. I recommend Nana, Chihayafuru, Flying Witch, O Maidens in your savage season, and Run with the wind

What are your thoughts about HIDIVE blocking licenses for shows like "Ya Boy Kongming!" and many summer season anime for all non-english speaking countries? These titles are completely dead in countries like France or Germany because of them. In the past they only blocked a few titles, but now they get more and more.
It's not really "blocking", but more just not owning the license to stream it in those countries. Global licenses have become more common among the super large services, but I'd imagine HiDive may have a harder time with that.
@@TheCanipaEffect There are still a lot of people that prefer watching with their native language - some of them can't even read English. This is basicly making the anime less interesting in such countries. "Ya Boy Kongming!" is a great show, but sadly no one really talks about it in Germany.

@@AccipiterVP Except HiDive aren't the one's doing this "kind of blocking", it's a result of exclusive licences, global streaming services, and vpn companies.
Lol. I mean, they are the ones getting the world wide licences. They are also streaming it in such countries, just not with subtitles for other languages. I can understand that making subtitles for every language existing is too expensive. But German and French for example aren't minority languages. A lot more people would sub to them if they would finally change their attitude.

Then realize that many socialism is a bit shit and you have to embrace more capitalist ideas. Also a socialist system absolutely can be imperialistic. No matter what economic system you have money drives it, which means expenses affect it, and imperialism motivated by bringing more resources and money into your economy.
dang I want to like Hi-dive, but if I pick them up, it would be exclusively for binging older titles and then just dropping... Crunchy keeps snatching up exclusive simulcast steams immediately or worse. Netflix gets a show and kills it immediately by simulcasting in Japan and waiting a year then releasing it all on one day in America, killing all the hype for a show.
I love how people have the anime "Monopoly" people wanted, and nothing has been fixed about it...

I bet firing one executive and spreading their salary around would have been enough to pay 20 translators a living wage.
Translators are some of the most important workers for Crunchyroll so they need to use their bargaining power to get a better deal because Crunchyroll is nothing without their subs.
Unfortunate because when I compare to Netflix anime at least, Crunchyroll is very thorough.
I feel like I have Mandela affect. I thought crunchyroll bought funimation, not the other way around. Why did they make their brand all crunchyroll? Funimation is phased out entirely.
They're the most important part besides ink and the mangaka themselves, they need to organize and picket, they can collapse nearly all anime in one hour. Then they would have to be paid properly like they should be. This injustice infuriates me so damn much

Isn't part of the problem that they hire sales rep that have no idea what our job is like so they just sell clients unreasonable deadlines and low rates to keep their ourageous margin? It's really something that bothers me when you tell your rates (rates that allow you to live decently in your country) and you get the "your rates are too high osrry, nothing we can do". yes. yes you can: stop trying to increase your margin on our back and pay us DECENTLY. NO translator is trying to get rich by doing their job, we just want to have enough time to do our job and enough money to eat and pay our bills...
Eh, just change profession and works in sector developments of the rising mobile gacha games, anime industry is getting stagnating in many sectors due to oversaturation and decentralisation of teams and genres
Seriously, since around 2019 to 2021 or so, there's like a dozen if not 20+ new anime per-season, how the hell the consumers can get tracks with all of these shows at once if not choosing for the highest rated or the most talked dispensable shows on the market (they're very lucky if it's became a huge hit classic for years if not decades to come)
The aforementioned dispensability also applies to these specific workers akin to translators too honestly, to the point that fansubs with e-donation boxes works better like a decade ago or even just jumping to the next big trends if they're very visionary business and adaptably minded
Honestly I did wonder if it was just me. Used to watch 20-30 shows a year currently airing, now I might watch 5. The majority of what comes out these days feels like either sequels, spinoffs or remakes of existing popular IPs or the same old tired premises that have been milked to oblivion

Honestly glad it was touched on at all, even if I've seen some people misinterpret some stuff. I don't expect it to be a topic covered on this channel (which is totally fine), but I think it's an important aspect to consider when talking about company practices and rates because of how prevalent dubs are and the sheer amount of people it takes to produce them.
Flat out saw someone on a different discussion thread believing Sentai's translator rates + the dubbing rate discussion being primarily focused on CR/Funi here must mean everyone working for Sentai is being paid well and that's why they dub so few shows which OH BOY do I have some receipts to show people on how shitty Sentai is as a company on the ADR side of things. There's a reason they have probably the single worst reputation even now among actors, directors, and scriptwriters outside of maybe that one random company in FL that dubbed AICO so badly it had to be redone by Bang Zoom.
I think the 80% goes into research is fascinating and would like to see more instances of it

@@dialetheic tbh it has been going for quite a bit but tldr people do not like localisers because of a lot of shitty changes they made from kaguya, nagatoro to most recently I turned my childhood friend into a girl wheere they made a crossdressing guy into a transcharacter. Bear in mind this was a yaoi manga and that guy was the main love interest. Then another localiser started defending the translation saying "the translator has done his research" by talking with trans people. Went on a tangent about how people who didn't like it are right wing and terfs . Basically the usual stuff happens when translators and localisers change stuff unnecessarily which happenes way more often than it should and a lot of those "incidents" have been done by seven seas
There is no drama between or with translators (=localizers), only the ever-present handful of online ignorami who a) do not understand Japanese and thus are arguing out of their ass and b) think there is such a thing as translation without localization

As someone who is really annoyed they went back to only in-house recording because it cut short a ton of potential in the industry both creatively (Funi dubs were by far the most diverse experience and region-wise prior) and financially (effectively destroying any rate or unionization talks), I'm SO tired of seeing this "they only use the same old TX VAs" in their dubs. Look at any cast list for an in-house show this season (so not Okatron, Sound Cadence, etc...) and you'll still see newer names mixed with more veteran VAs all the time. Sometimes in lead roles as well. They are also still bringing in new talent constantly. This mandate was enforced for plenty of reasons (most of which suck), but one of which was to encourage more and more actors to move to Dallas in the first place. And frankly, you are seeing more actors moving/planning to move because of it.
The issue is making sure those green actors are being paid fair rates as they are some of the most susceptible to being exploited due to Funi's long-standing tiered rate system for actors if you aren't represented and can't advocate for yourself (i.e. having to log in a certain amount of hours before moving up to a better rate - something no other major ADR studio really does anymore). Any LA actor, even those who used to work on Funi shows, will tell you the same thing.
The whole "they use the same old actors" not a good argument for encouraging CR to move back to allowing remote-recording because anyone who either watches current dubs or works on them can immediately tell you don't know what you're talking about when you use that line and ignore anything else you have to say.

I think part of the problem is that they're not paid to do a good job, they're paid to do a passable job, and doing more than the job requirements is just seen as a passion thing.
To see real change we can't just promote something like Kongming as a good example, we (as consumers) have to demand it as a standard. But when you have influencers and industry veterans defending actually bad work, then it shouldn't be a surprise when that's the level of work that defines the pay baseline.
Define "good job" ? Its not worse than pretty much anywhere, and certainly better than official bluray subs aniplex had. Its not worse than fansubs either, which is same or worse.

I'm saying they're explicitly not paid to have that leeway because most consumers can't tell the difference. Fixing this part is the most important step, and that will only happen if big names and industry vets become willing to call out when something doesn't meet the bar.

this is a problem with all giant companies really. They want to pay "equal" pay regardless of quality. I had to deal with that crap in a company where, to be honest, I was upset a person next to me who had been there for 10 years was still being paid $11/hr cause of the company's horrible policy of paying everyone at that level the same rate no matter what.
Giant companies don't want to reward workers, they want drones that just meet the quota and stay shut up when they fire a bunch of employees who were doing just fine.
No wonder Crunchy subs are a shit most of the time, who want to give it's all when you are not getting rewarded for

Funimation did not buy Crunchyroll. Both Crunchyroll and Funimation were bought by Sony.
Sony bought Funimation and then Funimation bought Crunchyroll on Sony Pictures' behalf. It's semantics, but Funimation was the acquiring company.

I’ve always had a certain opinion about this topic and now that you bring up some numbers I think it just reinforced it. If translation is 20% actual translation and 80% research/localisation then it makes sense to be paid $80 and not $400+. Both companies and the general public think translation is easy, so they value it as such. It’s not, but that’s the perception. The research part is unpaid because it is unknown, downplayed, or even undesired.
I am torn on this, on one hand I really want people to be properly paid, but on the other I sometimes think the work they do is detrimental to the media. For example, the Kongming translation shown here was great for the reasons mentioned, but I also like it because they Kept the 3 kingdoms references even if I know nothing about them. The research and language skills shown on it should be paid accordingly.
When I watch foreign media I want to also get foreign references. In other shows it is quite common for localisation to strip that from shows in favour of “western” references, mostly American. They put a lot of effort in that, but for me that work is not something I want to encourage or support. Effort alone is not valuable.
I guess the best thing translators can do is a “translation strike” were they put the minimum effort and put out as literal, subpar TLs as can be to make both companies and the public notice what a “basic” TL looks like. If companies want the “premium” TL, then pay for it. But of course this requires both organising and I understand the pride translators take in their job to not want to lower its quality to prove a point. And it also risks the worst outcome, that people don’t care and are content with it despite its quality.
I don’t understand why they don’t just boycott companies that don’t pay fair wages, if there isn’t enough translation work to survive without those companies go into another profession, Crunchyroll or anyone else doing the same will have nothing if no translator will stoop to unlivable pay
Why would anyone even want to work for Crunchyroll xD They're owned by Funimation now, which always had a low bar for their localizations. Wish Funimation had competition that actually cared about both their workers, and the quality of their work, instead of the low expectations there is for anything pushed out by Funimation.
Someone needs to make a better company that does what Funimation is supposed to be doing, to get their deathgrip off the entire industry of localizing Japanese Anime to English (whether through subs or through dubs).

I'm gonna guess he probably believes you should be paid more too but compared to people pushing for animator's rights translators/localizers basically have no one and nowadays people cherry pick the worst examples and say that everyone deserves less because of it.

who the fuck said you are supposed to live as a CR translator? Are they working 8 hours a day 5 days a week as full time employees?
I've spoken to many translators that work more than 8 hours a day... Especially younger translators.
@@TheCanipaEffect if that is true, that they work 40 hours a week and do not make enough money then do not sign the contract for work. You can make money doing translating for other jobs.
Just remember, the anime viewerbase _wanted_ a streaming service monopoly, so that they could get as much as possible in one place without paying for multiple subscriptions. The anime viewerbase, on average, supports right-wing, anti-labor politicians who'll take their side in the culture wars and stick it to the SJWs/feminists/trans-activists/etc.. The anime viewerbase has reaped what they sowed, and then they have the gall to cry crocodile tears over the plight of the translators, animators, and other industry workers... while enjoying anime (whose production and translation is ultimately subsidized by other people's money) on pirate sites that pay absolutely nothing to anybody involved.
We once had a thriving scene with many different companies licensing anime, driving up the prices paid to Japanese content owners, and providing many employment options for translators and dubbing voice actors. But this was back in the 2000s, and we didn't want to pay the prices required to sustain that ecosystem. That's how we got the 2007 market crash.

Sorry, I don't really have sympathy for individuals who allow themselves to be taken advantage of. If you have a problem with the pay, work elsewhere or find a different field of work. You get paid a poverty wage because you allow yourself to get paid a poverty wage.
Wanting for people to be payed fairly and equally is NOT socialism as you claimed but more akin to egalitarianism. Socialism does the opposite, it lies and manipulates until you think youre better of when you are not. Divide et impera.
