8:40 It'd probably be more accurate to say "continuations" rather than "role reprisals". Just to clarify, Bookworm Season 3 and Shield Hero Season 2 *are* actually recorded at BangZoom! with the casts from prior seasons (minus Billy as mentioned in the vid). I guess another exception is the Attack on Titan OAD dubs which have some non-TX talent for new characters in the same vein as the main series but it's just 8 episodes, and according to Kristen McGuire on Twitter, the dub was recorded months ago.
No actual proof here but considering a fair amount of the AOT OAD actor announcement pics on twitter all use the Funimation logo rather than CR, I think it's fair to say those were recorded a while ago at least before all this.
@@Katt1721 You're probably right because Funimation announced the OADs' license back in mid-December (same week as the Japanese Blu-ray announcement date) so they would have had almost 3 months to dub them all before the Crunchyroll brand merge announcement happened in the beginning of March.
@@Katt1721 Kristen McGuire confirmed in her fanart Twitter post of Isabel from AOT No Regrets that they were recorded months ago, so yeah, that basically means before the whole merger shit.
Very curious to see what Sony does with Kingdom. The fact that they're taking so long to get a dub out suggests they're probably outsourcing it and possibly trying to schedule both S3 and S4 back-to-back. To whom, is the question.

As a currently non-union VA, I'd find it to be much more preferable for remote recording to exist alongside studio because budget economics.

I'm definitely will miss that era of dubs. We definitely got some very unique dubs at the time with some fresh actors. I also agree that means using local based actors doesn't mean their dubs will be less quality. (though that might be a personal issue for some)

Imagine growing a massive anime conglomerate since the 90s for well over 30 years, involved in multiple anime productions, only to renamed "Crunchyroll Dubs".
Honestly, I loved seeing people from different locations working together on a single dub. I'll definitely miss it if mostly local only dubs become the norm again. Hopefully remote dubbing still is allowed for people if circumstances make that easier for them. It would be dumb of Crunchyroll to eliminate the option.
Well certainly as a Voice Actor myself that hopes to work in some degree in the industry it would help if I'm able to remote record.
There is without a doubt a benefit to studio recording and I'm sure most actors would prefer it too if it weren't for the expenses tied to travel or moving.

@@imJGott the issue isn't the mic, the main issue is sound space. In fact having a really good mic in a bad sound space will make the quality sound worse because the mic will pick up everything. You can do professional work on a $200 microphone it's sound readings where you're recording that matters most.
This is why Studios like in person recording, because they can fix any problems with the sound quality on the Fly. They don't have any control when you're recording in your own space, and that make it a lot harder to manage audio problems.

@@imJGott When Funimation first shifted to remote they mailed out about 170 kits with a microphone, iPad and headphones to their actors. As the other guy points out the actors spaces where they recorded from (usually their closets) created most of the issue because of how the sound was picked up, and everyone doesn't have the same space in their dwelling, so say Monica Rial maybe has a bigger closet than Cherami Leigh, or Austin Tindle doesn't have any closet space and has to record from his garage or whatever. Audio bounces around those different areas differently and the microphone picks it up differently. Heather Walker sounded like she recorded for Kei Shirogane into a tin can.
With all these variables, in-studio will always be a better option because they control the space and audio engineers don't have to work around 170+ different set ups.

I don't necessarily mind the return to in-person dubbing, but I'm hoping it doesn't go back to being the old normal and remote recording sticks around as an alternative option. Ideally, I'd like in-person and remote to exist simultaneously for the same dub, but even I'll admit that's aiming much too high.
Like you said, I really want there to be relatively equal opportunities for remote and in-person voice acting. As someone who wishes to get into voice acting despite living in an area that isn't very popular for the industry, and knowing that there are a lot of other people in a similar situation, remote voice acting's probably gonna be our best bet.
I hope they keep work from home option as in a job like this it should be possible.

I feel like there is just a lot we don't know and misinformation going around. I really think You are one of the best in the biz when it comes to researching this kind of thing.
This was a story I felt really passionate about making sure ANN covered (one of the few times I've sent an email to their newsroom to give them people to reach out to who did speak publicly on the subject, links to live industry roundtable discussions that were happening, etc...), so I'm really glad to see it getting brought up here as well.
I think this new mandate is massively short-sighted and far removed from what the rest of the VO industry is doing across different fields (SAG-AFTRA even requires home recording to be an option if needed so long as the quality is maintained). It hurts TX talent who are immunocompromised who could just as easily record from home. It hurts directors by cutting their talent pool. It definitely hurts the overall quality and diversity of these dubs (a few TX actors like Alexis Tipton talked about feeling massively overworked this season both with directing and acting). It certainly benefits executives who are now getting a return on investment for their brand new TX studio space. But its undeniable to see how this mandate has completely silenced all rate discussions by re-erecting that barrier between TX actors (esp rookie actors who are accepting the lowest tier rates because that's how Funimation, now CR, has always done things and clearly they can't be made to change) and everyone else. And its just really REALLY sad to see all these incredible strides that were made in the past couple years be discarded like it was nothing.
No one was expecting a full switch to at-home recording once businesses started opening up, but I think most industry people and fans alike were hoping for a hybrid of sorts. Give directors the freedom to cast their shows as they see fit, whether that's a mix, majority in-studio with a few remote roles, or even if that means they do decide to stick to fully in-house because it works best for them and/or their engineers, schedule, etc...
I always loved Funimations dubs more than most major ADR studios in the past few years because they always felt the most diverse talent-wise for multiple reasons (no one casting director, no weird region bias, etc..). Things were a bit hit or miss when simuldubs first started getting produced around the mid-2010s, but after that adjustment period I'd say the positives were numerous creatively-speaking. And the same thing with COVID-era remote-recording - had a few rough spots but ultimately I felt like the industry creatively was moving in a direction I never thought it could. And that's such a cool thing.
It's sad to say, but I've had zero desire to watch any of the new in-house (aka "non-outsourced") CR dubs. No disrespect to local talent, I fully agree that dubs with majority TX talent are not inherently worse (plenty of my all-time favorites are TX dubs), but I can't help that these decisions have sucked any and all joy out of announcements, watching their dubs, etc...

Why wouldn't they just keep hiring new actors? There will always be dub anime fans who want to voice in anime ready to take the open spaces.
@@bluebaron6858 So CR will continue to hire new local actors obv that's not so much the issue outside of a handful of regulars that have felt overworked this season so far. And if you look at the current line-up for shows there are quite a few new names, or at least names that mostly did walla/background prior to this), because you're right there will always be a steady stream of new VAs wanting to work in anime.
But that steady stream of newcomers (all being paid at the lowest tier rate until they hit their 100 roles and being perfectly fine with it because they "really want to work in anime") mixed with CR isolating in-house TX dubs from the rest of the industry absolutely hurts rate discussions (whether union or not) that are sorely needed and long overdue in the TX scene. Alex Moore, a local TX actor, also expressed similar sentiments, but I can't find her tweet on short notice.

If I had to hazard a guess from what I know of recording, I don't think there was any chance of at-home dubbing becoming standard. There's a lot of reasons:
1) Lack of reliability: Anyone who's spent any time on any anime forum knows that the COVID delays were... "poorly-received" by consumers. Weebs are impatient, and if a dub gets pushed back a week because an actor has Comcast, it will definitely impact the popularity of a show.
2) Quality Control: It is patently obvious when somebody is using sub-par equipment or operating in an improvised studio. All dubbing, from anime to video games, from Japan to America, has seen a quality drop these past two years. This is especially apparent when two people who are conversing have radically different set-ups; just try listening to early Dragonball Z Abridged episodes.
3) Relatedly, cost: Having to get every actor the same, or at least comparable, equipment setups cannot be cheap. Add onto that likely needing to hire more sound engineers to clean up the audio quality, bandwidth to process uncompressed audio files, and who knows what else.
4) Artistic considerations: Directing over the internet cannot be as effective as in person, nor can actors playing off each other. I would also imagine that ADR is far more difficult to manage, and may contribute to number 3 if actors have low-end computers.
5) Legal: I'd imagine there is a constant concern of footage, scripts, or other content being leaked (or hacked) when it's sent outside the studio, which has to be done for ADR. Anything getting sent over the internet is vulnerable, so passing un-aired material around online is risky. I'd guess that distributors would be liable to the Japanese publishers if something like that were to happen, but I'm not a lawyer.
Really, if at-home dubbing were a possibility, why would any studio have ever bothered flying in talent? It's not as though there's any recent technology that would make the practice more viable, so if it were reasonable, studios would have been doing it long before COVID.
Also, I don't think you hear industry people talk about this much for another reason: it doesn't help actors to expand the talent pool. While, from an artistic and quality standpoint, the larger the pool of actor candidates, the better, for actors it means they will get fewer roles. If actors were salaried, and studios could just call in whoever they wanted for a given show, that'd be one thing, but less work means less money in an industry where it's already next to impossible to make ends meet. But then we're back around to the pay issue
I had just re-watched your video on representation in voice acting and read the news on unionization efforts at Seven Seas. With the monopoly of English dubbing in the United States, you would think that Crunchyroll would just establish a studio in each region of the country instead of just one super facility in Texas. Honestly, I had a lot of concerns about this merger before I thought of this issue.
Crunchyroll and Netflix have become too big and are going to give rise to the very issues they initially were solving.
This could benefit Sentai based in Houston, they could start getting previous funi projects to their side.
I mean at lease Netflix unionized....
I hope that we do get a return to mixed casting (for want of a better term) but I really do worry it was just a flash in the pan... it also felt SO GOOD seeing disabled talent like Risa Mei landing major roles and I DON'T wanna loose that momentum!! But if we can't create safe recording spaces and better access then that's just not gonna happen =/
It would be nice to diversify the industry overall. I’m slowly gearing up to open my own ADR/Voice-Over studio down here in Australia, and whilst I’ve dreamt of recording, (not acting) and potentially even working on a FuniDub (which is obviously now Crunchy), I reckon that ain’t happening unless I move to Texas to work in house, and hope they accept me for their staff, which has a high chance of backfiring. Maybe I’ll get lucky and score some of my own deals with anime studios, but Oof that will be long and expensive. Not to mention distribution will be a pain in the ass.
I think remote Dubing should stick around I understand in-person dubbing being people's preferred because I imagine the voice director finds it easier in person but I say you gotta move with the times
Back on the topic of this video, at this point in time with the state of the world, I suppose in the end it all comes down to what the companies and the actors themselves are comfortable doing. As someone who has no knowledge about any actors unions or any of that, all I know is that the dubbing industry essentially had the rug pulled out from under, and what they've been doing in the meantime is, essentially, catch up work, and they should all be commended for all the back breaking work they've done in such unenviable conditions. While in-person work would probably be the closest to feeling "back to normal," in the end it all comes down to what companies and employees are comfortable doing
Wasn't Funimation already only hiring non-union voice actors like the Japanese import part of the video game industry such as Nintendo USA and Square Enix USA have in recent years? (RIP any chance of Tennant playing Scrooge in Kingdom Hearts also RIP Fire Emblem fans who were there for the switch to non-union VAs)
Fire Emblem has always been non-union. There's a reason why some characters in Heroes have their VAs either uncredited (e.g. Dorcas when he came out) or credited under a pseudonym (e.g. Jamieson Price, who goes by "Taylor Henry").
I definitely don't want remote recording to go. It feels like we lose far more than we stand to gain. Surely, a balance can be struck.
I knew that Funimation was merging with Crunchyroll but I didn't think they would change their name, I was wondering why Crunchyroll was in my youtube sub feed. It makes me wonder if they'll either cancel their streaming service or will it merge with Crunchy's.
That’s already happened. They’ve been slowly moving all their stuff over to Crunchyroll the last couple of months. By the end of the year I suspect Funimation streaming service will be completely gone.
I don't see why Funmation wouldn't stay the name of the studio, especially if they're gonna favor VAs from Funmation's home state.

Before the pandemic we did see LA Voice Actors in Funimation (or Crunchyroll now) dubs like My Hero (Zeno Robinson as Hawks) and Black Clover (Johnny Yong Bosch as Zora), One Piece (Keith Silverstein, Travis Willingham etc) and I assume those actors recorded their lines at a studio in LA so, wouldn't Crunchyroll benefit from opening a studio in LA like NYAV Post? Directors get to work with more talent, we get to hear more talent in our dubs and the suits get their money. Maybe I'm being naive but I feel like that way everyone wins

Arte. The setting is 16th century Italy. It's about a young woman who dreams of becoming an artist and the challenges she faces along the way.
I did notice the difference from remote recordings and in-person recordings. Pretty sure the last half of season 4 of MHA was done at home. I couldn't really tell anyway. I think season 4 of Haikyuu was done remotely. I could tell that some of their audio weren't the same quality (especially Kageyama's lines). As far as everything else, I didn't see a significant change. But I'm interested to see the new casting choices now that Funimation has joined Crunchyroll. I'd like to see Clifford Chapin and Scott Gibbs voice two of main characters in an anime. I'd love to listen to them yelling at each other. That would be a dream come true for me.

The capabilities of what the pandemic brought to specifically the "anime voice acting" industry allowed me to start auditioning for anime, being a talent that's not from Texas or LA. It was an immense opportunity and one that'll be missed. The only anime auditions I get now are like what Cipher said, from any studios I've kept a connection with that aren't Crunchy/Funimation, which is amazing that I still get any. But considering that Sony bought Crunchyroll and Funi and then merged, regardless many anime series tend to get a dubbed license at Funimation anyway. So opportunities for voice talent would only stay within Texas or for people who are willing to fly over and work (if cast).
I personally believe that remote recording is possible at the highest level considering other studios continuing to do it, and with technology always improving, there really shouldn't be an issue allowing out of state talent to work in the anime industry. The only thing really holding it back are the stakeholders who own Funi/Crunchyroll. But again, like what Cypher mentioned, to be able to make EVERYONE happy is tough. Although it's negative for many new talents/talents across the country, let alone world, anime IS the least paying in the industry and we can continue being creative and working in other aspects of the industry itself, but Sony owning the anime industry now will allow for the genre to hopefully rise and grow in a way we haven't seen before. Meaning anime will become even more mainstream that it has become over the last few years.

Well as long as you have talent and a legal ability to work in America in that specific industry you should have a chance. Not sure how Work Visa works since I don't need one, but I think they might be industry specific. The only thing that would really hold you back other than talent is the ridiculous and annoying immigration and work visa process.

Oh, you're going to cover the Spy X Family dub in a future video? I'm definitely interested on how they approached Anya especially her voice as I saw some comments who watched the dub that find her dub voice to be older than is supposed to be.
To be fair anime has a habit of making any character that's supposed to be "young" ridiculously high pitched to seem more innocent and cute. It's just a cultural thing 99% of English speaking girls have lower voices than anime middle age women.
I once did work experience working in a Nursery and I was susprised about how deep this 3-4 year old's voice was.
I feel like this is as good a time to ask this question as any, but I've been wondering if anybody else who's in the process of "moving over" to Crunchyroll has noticed an issue with the "imported" dub videos on Crunchyroll with the subtitles, as in the Japanese text on screen describing names, places, signs, and general text on screen that we're supposed to read. It's one reason in particular that I'm still keeping my Funimation subscription going. I know this video is on a different subject altogether, but I still wanted to ask around this community, and see if anyone has noticed it too and whether there have been fixes yet. Thank you everyone.

No, they're still keeping the LA-based studios like Bang Zoom for the third seasons of Bookworm and Shield Hero. The fact that there hasn't been a single LA-based dub for any *new* 2022 show this season is the problem.
Came down the rabbit hole that is UA-cam to find this video even more relevant 4 months later with the Mob Psycho issues...
It really is a shame they only want to stick to Texas-based actors, pandemic or no pandemic. I think the industry would benefit from new talents coming in from all regions, especially with simuldubs becoming available in more languages than ever before. TBH, some of the English and Spanish dubs I’ve been watching are remote (and it really shows sometimes), but those studios just want to stick with their preset team without looking for new actors from across the country (i.e. US/Canada, Mexico) or even across the ocean if they wanted to (i.e. UK/Spain). Luckily, the Miami-based Spanish dub of My Hero Academia has been the first to break the mold, bringing in talents both new and renowned not just locally, but from all over Latin America spanning almost every corner; Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, and even New York! (As an aspiring bilingual VA from Connecticut, that gives me hope 😁😉)
I've been watching the dub of Spy Family so far, and it's pretty good, imo. There are a few spots where it could be better, but it's far from terrible.

I'm really disappointed Season 4 of Legend of Galactic Heroes still hasn't been dubbed yet! Season 4 came out in 2022 and it's 2024 and still...NOTHING!

Did you believe any dub language of a anime should have closed captions in them. I believe they do for example Shady Show in text message this is important to the story but there's no speaking roles you have to read to find out you know what's going on but if they don't have closed captions you will be missing a very important part but what do you think about it?
Would be great for Crunchyroll to go union.

I think it's really smart of this channel not to go into the pros and cons of unionization as other anitube channels have and they've demonstrated a complete lack of how unions operate, economic markets, and the laws surrounding them.
A lot of people like they claim pay is a reason the unionize however most of them seem to forget that but you can have no problem paying them approximately a tenth of what they would pay voice actors for movies or cartoons.
Others like to complain about the the nepotism currently going on in the anime industry. Not realizing that in order to join the Screen Actors Guild, the union that the voice actors want to join notice how it says 'screen actors', you need at least one title credit and you need to pay a joining fee of about $3,500. This doesn't include all the dues you're going to have to pay once you are a member. Obviously it goes without saying that unless you have previous connections getting that credit and then being able to afford to feed the joint is extremely difficult, the existing structure in Hollywood is designed to keep newcomers out of the movie industry why would anybody think that that's going to magically change with voice acting.
Another fun fact is remote recording and Simudubbing have actually increased the difficulty of getting new talent into the industry. Your home studio to do recording in yeah everything in that is built and paid for by you the actor, if you're not already a voice actor you probably don't have the equipment necessary and that equipment can be expensive. Simudubbing has also compressed the time scales in which things happen. Meaning that rules need to be cast without an audition.
The best case for unionization is for compensation and benefits such as healthcare, however the vast majority of the people who are proponents of unionization tend to be doing so based off ideological reasonings not necessarily economic ones. Thus they don't understand how health insurance works and make poor arguments in failed to realize that there are other ways in order to bundle people together to get discounts on health insurance.
I've also heard people trying to complain about Texas being a right-to-work state. However again when people mentioned right-to-work laws as a reason the unionized they demonstrate they have no understanding of what these laws say.
They also failed to realize that in States like California where there are no right-to-work laws a large portion of the dubs still happen without Union contracts, this includes studios like bang zoom which are in Los Angeles itself.

Some of the dubs the last couple years have had terrible recording quality, with some characters sounding weird compared to others, and especially compared to previous seasons, to the point where it's really distracting

For me the most annoying part bout the new era of Crunchyroll is the new return to an old take on newer content. Lock it behind the subscription paywall without a full explanation as to why. No, they didn't say why yet other than "We need more money".
Really surprised to hear people gushing about Organ's Loid. His performance was definitely a deal breaker for me. The difference in Loid's father and spy voice is pretty jarring and hammy. I think it was the father voice especially that just seemed poorly performed.
As a fan of good dub work that hates Funimation, their super cliky innards, and their desire push all their agenda into their dub work, this merger makes me sad that I have to watch their stuff to enjoy good English voice work (even if the script isn't that good). I'm also sad their is less anime dubbing coming out of California as I always preferred stuff from there.

I genuinely worry about unionization of anime dubs. Sure, it would bring benefits such as those mentioned in the video, but if for whatever reason, someone who shouldn't be in a position of power becomes union leader, it will likely make it harder for dub VAs not to get cancelled. Remember what happened to Vic thanks to claims made without proof? We may see more of that in the coming years if unionization of anime dub voice acting takes place.
I'm pretty sure that Vic sank his own career by tilting at Funimation's windmill. Also, while he wasn't as bad as say Cosby or Weinstein, it was clear from how many voice actors did not like him as a person from his decade+ assholity.
Also, there's a clear difference between "canceling" someone and calling out someone's asshole behaviors. Just saying.

@@Toonrick12 Let me rephrase my point. If dub voice acting gets unionized and the wrong people get into power, this may result in newer voice actors getting blacklisted for no good reason. Also, unions, if they go too far, will hamper or even worse, destroy the industry that the union deals in. It's happened to the auto industry, the mining industry, and now it just might happen to anime dubs. I get asking for a raise, but why don't more dub voice actors get into making music instead of just voice acting? Wouldn't that translate better to dubbing songs or any scenes where their characters sing?
@@linkskywalker5417 More often than not, dubbing songs is not possible as the music involved in a series is often under an entirely different license than the series itself. Or, in the case of some music-focused series, the Japanese side forbids it as the anime is a marketing vehicle for the music.
They could also just not be good singers. It is an entirely different skill, after all. Being able to act does not mean you are able to sing or vice versa.
You are also saying "why don't they take up a second job rather than being paid properly for the one they are already doing".
At this point anime distributors should just hire hollywood actors. At least SAG actors know their craft.
Hollywood actors does not equal better dubs and personally I would not want that. Not saying they shouldn't be in there at all but sometimes it has mixed results

@@RFLCPTR anime localizers don't use them because they have a union and they cost more than hiring the guy who does copies from the office, or the adr director picking up a few extra lines for pocket change.
Dubbing and pre-lay are two very different skill sets. In pre-lay the actor has the most freedom and nothing to hinder their performance because the animation hasn't been done yet.
Dubbing is a completely different process. You have to speak in tandem with the beeps to match the lip flaps while also trying get the emotion across. So actors are much more restricted.
The dubbing and pre-lay they aren't comparable. They are two different subsets of voice acting.
It's important to be mindful that much of what people don't like about dubs have nothing to do with the actors ability and everything to do with the nature of the process.
Imagine paying for anime just to have it dubbed...
