Primoz and Remco are not bike racers originally, you can tell that, they just don’t think like a bike racer - they think like traditional athletes. The difference between them and everyone outside of the top 10-12 riders in the world is their sheer natural talent. While people talk about how good Tadej is, I actually think Primoz is probably the most naturally gifted given how late he took the sport up.

Pog however is naturally born cyclist, probably the best cyclist in the entire history.

Roglic is one of my favorite competitors. If he's being a funny liar during pre-race interviews, then I can tell that him and his team have a winning plan, e.g. earlier this year, he said before a race "I don't care if we win the race", and then he ended up winning the race.

    • @ChrisHornerCycling

Primož is probably the most resilient rider out there. He's come through so much adversity in his career, and some of his greatest triumphs have come after his most crushing defeats (and/or crashes). He has human vulnerabilities which make his victories that much more satisfying. There may be one or two cyclists who have greater ability than Rog, but there are none with greater heart.

I agree. I hope all four of the contenders and their teams come into the Tour de France healthy next year. I got down on Primoz and Jonas Vingegaard when they both attacked their race leading teammate at the 2023 Vuelta but Roglic definitely deserves better luck in 2025. That second crash at the Tour was just brutal. A rider slides all the way across the road over the raised median and takes down Roglic like it was a paid hit. Nobody could have prevented that one.

I agree that Primoz is one of the top 3 or 4, but not sure how you think he could ever be at the level of Pogi. Have you ever seen Primos have the ability to leave everyone way behind? When Primos was at his best, he got beaten by a young kid called Pogacar, and now that young kid is coming into his prime. He doesn't stand a chance against Pogi now.

This echoes thoughts I've been having all season. It's astonishing what Roglic has achieved despite facing so many challenges. I love Pogi but he should thank his lucky stars that Roglic doesn't have the best bike-handling skills, gets easily distracted too often, and has just plain bad luck sometimes. Because bike-handling skills and focus are solvable problems. And if Roglic solves those problems, he could easily become Pogi's worst nightmare.

With every crash comes time for contemplation. His career stands for itself, excellent pro with an ability to teleport to victories up most climbs, tremendous flair and style on the bike despite his (many) crashes. Racecraft wise your point stands. Not the ultimate touch and feeling that riders like Tadej Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel have
Can handle the brutal pressure that comes with crashes and a view missed opportunities at the Ultimate price. Bounced back every time. Strong and full of grit. Despite cycling being a team sport which he understands. A man of his own and he can do what he wants to do.

If he keeps the bike upright he can ride with anyone and win anything. That said, unfortunately I think the lasting image for many fans will be the ITT at the TDF in 2020. I'll never forget watching the timer on the screen as Roglic's buffer kept getting lower and lower and then went into the red, then the look on his face as he approached the finish. Really bad day.

Yes on all counts. And the reason I criticize Primoz for all of his crashes in big races is because he deprives us of exciting GC battles we'd all like to see. 100 percent right about Tadej -- he is so savvy about avoiding body slams into the pavement, even when it looks like he's being super aggressive. On top of everything else. Thanks for all your expert commentary this year.

Primoz iz amazing and I hope he keeps racing for many more years. BUT...Tadej has progressed so much since 2020 he's now better than Primoz in every aspect of bike racing by at least one step, if not more. Race craft, awareness, bike stability, tactics, endurance, recovery, change of pace, long hills, short hills, steep heels, decent, time trial, day races, one week races, grand tours, team strength. Primoz in top form doesn't beat Tadej in any of those individual aspects of bike racing, let alone in a combination of them in a 3 week race in a grand tour. That's even before we consider time is not on Priomoz's side. It's really hard to see where Primoz would take any time from Tadej, unless he's injured or he's covering off Vingo / Remco.
For example, just look at how hard Primoz had to work for the Giro win against Thomas in 2023 and Tadej just wiped the floor with Thomas this year.
And Primoz is just not consistent enough in a 3 week race to be on par with Vingo or Tadej. When was the last time he didn't have a crash or crisis on a grand tour? You just can't have 1,2,3 bad days when going against these two, it's an instant game over. We saw how that went for Tadej in 2023.
In my opinion, Primoz is currently the 4th best grand tour rider, behind Tadej, Vingo and Remco. Can he win the TDF? Very unlikely, unless there are injuries, crosswinds and a LOT of luck on his side. Can he win in other Grand Tours? Yes, that he can.
Primoz has the best chance against Tadej in a one week race - less chance to crash and bonk, while having the energy to rip it in the uphill finish. But I would still give the edge to Tadej, despite the fact that Primoz is on the verge of becoming the first to win all the best one week races (just one to go).

    • @ChrisHornerCycling
      @ChrisHornerCycling  2 години тому +1

You are allowed to host the show with me because I agree with everything you said, except Remco being better than Roglic. But understand it’s very very close between the two, so I’m ok with you believing it. Even if it’s not true. 😂🦋👊

    • @mihakanzyani
      @mihakanzyani 2 години тому

@@ChrisHornerCycling Just name the time and place and I'll be there! 😂
It would probably still be a tossup between Primoz and Remco. Remco has that brutal time trial that Primoz just can't match. Or anyone else for that matter. How he keeps beating even Gana is beyond me - he's so much smaller and not as still on the bike. It would then be on Primoz to pull back time - before this year's TDF I thought that would be an easy job for Primoz, but I'm not so sure anymore. Remco really impressed me with his consistency and showed signs that he could really match Primoz in the high mountains, while on the short mountain sprints Remco can match and probably beat Primoz and that's saying something, since Primoz has a brutal final short sprint and a ton of wins to support that. With Remco his decision making is a bit suspect, just look at the last two races, so for sure that is something Primoz can exploit.
So in summary - we clearly saw this year that Remco is progressing nicely as a GT rider. He has a trump card with time trialing, great short uphill sprints and decent high mountains, but still has some weaknesses where Primoz can take back time. I'm giving a slight edge to Remco, but not on the level that there's no way that Primoz can do it.

For instance, Primoz win of the Vuelta was a quiet affair compared to vibes drawn by pogacar in the other tours or even the 2023 win by Kruss at the same event. I think one of the things about Roglic is he's fearless, when I go down a technical hill full gas I get a bit scared and slow down, I don't think Roglic gets that (as much) and I think in a way this is what leads to some of his issues, I don't think the alarm bells start ringing quite so early I'm sure he gets them, but they come on a bit later or when the danger level is already higher.

Why anyone would ask himself if Primoz is going to retire just because after all the crashes and magnificent results in the season is not on his top level at the season end?
He simply needs to be racing with his new team to make it once again a perfection and GO to tour with the best possible options we can be sure that he will do everything possible to beat other riders . 💪

It is of course up to each individual to have opinions on where to rank riders. But I can not see Roglic belong among top three. Vuelta is not high ranked. Winning monuments, WC is bigger. Pogacar, Evenepoel, MvdP are in their own league. Normaly Wout belongs there. Jonas is fourth and Roglic fifth at best.

Yeah, Roglić has been skipping the spring classics altogether in the past three seasons. Plus he didn't beat any of the big boys apart from a still recovering Remco at the Dauphiné. Seeing him finally win the Tour would be great though.

I am not a fan of saying that a sport needs a cyclist. It is the same as saying basketball needs lebron or the nfl needs brady.
There's a quote that goes around by a youtuber called tom scott that goes "all things must end" and that is important for careers. Guys like Primoz will have to end their careers at some point and it's very tough to leave as the no.4 in the world at mountains. I would rather see him go at 4 than stay too long and leave at 40 for example.
There's a great core of riders who can take the mantle so when lance left it was the schleks and contodor, when they left it was wiggins, froome and nibali, and when they left it was thomas, bernal, pogacar and vingegaard. There will always be a new star made no matter how fast or slow the next generation is.
Love Primoz, great bike rider, but if he wants to retire, then that is his choice and he should go with what he thinks is right :)

Love you always and love Primoz, but the fact you even considered that a healthy Primoz could be ahead of Tadej on your list is ludicrous. Tadej is just at another level and has been for the last 5 years despite losing the TDF to a superior team and bad tactics 2 of those years.

All due respect, there is an elephant in the room. And PR and most of the peloton has believe knows it. TP is not clean, not even close. Even your former boss and teammates have all but openly stated this. So this my concern, as should be every fan of cycling; why would PR stay motivated to race when one or more riders have their finger on the scale. He has no chance. UCI clearly must know. So if PR retires it really should not be surprising. TP could easily race for +10 more years, and if left unchecked continue to produce watts/kg that have never been seen before in any sport be it clean or doped athletes. TP is untouchable the way I see it, unless there is a level playing field. Love your show. TP. ……as all the pros are saying “ not normal”…..could not be more true.

But I sure get tired of having to hear a plug about how great he's been on every damn video we records anymore. With all of the major crashes Roglic has had and his age, you gotta start wondering how much more can his body take. He's gotta be taking a fistful of Tylenol every day as it is. Might not hurt him to do some of the less challenging cyclocross races, just for the bike handling skills he could pick up. He's gotta do something to level up his bike handling skills.

Primoz came to cycling late and sure AF I hope he will hang the cleated shoes very late too. One of my favourite riders. I rooted for him to win the Tour 2020 but then Baby Pog came and spoiled the party.
But yeah, his bike handling skills and situational awareness are not up there with guys like Pog and Sagan who grew up on a bike and that's pretty obvious.

You really set an optimal Primoz on first place next to Pogacar? Don't get me wrong, i love Primoz and I can get behind that in GC and brutal hill/mountain 1 day races but take a look at the spring races like Vlaanderen and even the Amstel Gold Race. I don't see him doing anything like what Pogacar has done. Still i hope he will continue racing for a good few years and join you on the 40+ GC winners bench

Primoz does not have the character of Tadej. Do you think that matters, Chris? Primoz lost me in the 2023 season when he burned his Jumbo teammate so blatantly. Character and judgement do matter.
Would like to hear what you think about that time in the past with Sepp. Primoz lost me there, i can’t get behind him like you do, but I’m just a schmuck cyclist, not a wise ex-pro like you. Thank you for all your videos and hard work, I learn so much from you.

Primoz is great but stating that he is similar to Pogacar makes no sense. He has a great final, like Pogacar, but Pogacar has way more tools in his bag. Actually he is the one with most tools. No active top rider is capable of doing such a great season as he did. In the way he did.

TDF crashes as I remember. Motorcycle clips hay bale in 2022, should have bunny hopped it I guess. 2024 Bora is on the back foot and Primoz is in front of his team, cyclist knocked him out. Chris should have given them a knucklehead. The wipe out on the turn after crossing water was a mistake but he's chasing the leaders. Primoz big mistake was not going after more time in the GC at the 2020 TDF. Pogi is riding away from everyone right now but the sport needs a healthy Jonas, Remco, and Primoz at the 2025 TDF.
