Did you guys enjoy this Marty Friedman Megadeth Symphony Of Destruction solo lesson?! What other sweet classic solos do you all want to see on my channel?!
Yupper, for nostalgia, I go watch the TOS vidjya once in a while with my step mom Becky (she says hey btw, gross), TOS would be great! Ride the Lightning (moar great chord following arpegimoes), AJfA (that F#m wah section), Save Yourself from MSG, Because MF'nS! Sad but True... etc.. carry on, and quit texting Becky back... it gives her hope.. :(
God damn man... the insight behind the concepts that Marty uses here are arguably more valuable than the actual solo itself. Thanks so much for this continued exemplary work, Ben. I really appreciate it.
Intervals over the chords: E /E Emin7 G /G major, G6 C /C6,C7, Cmajor7 A/Amin6 E/Emin11, Emin13, Emin7, Emin9 G/ Gmajor, G6, G11 C/ C7, Cmajor7 A/Asus2add9 The last 2 notes are the 3rd and 5th of G major as the bass is walking back down and hits G.
This is how you teach a solo! I love how you explained also the context of the licks and not only the notes. I've tried to learn this for ages but that "tricky part" in the end still kicks my ass.
Duda! I've learned so much from all of your videos I'm still trying to comprehend the influx of info. I wish I was like #5 from Short Circuit. "Need Input" reads books etc. knows everything in seconds. You're a great teacher with a sense of humor. I must have watched your intro to "shred pentatonics" a few dozen times. "Today I will play a hot minor pentatonic lick using alternate picking, yes" Hilarious. It has happened to me!
This solo is insane, and when you play it slow, you can hear the enka influences in the note choices he made (Enka is old Japanese music from decades ago that still has a following among older Japanese people). It's actually showing how far back he was into Japanese music.
And no, I'm not saying he uses the Japanese scale patterns to do his solos. Specifically, he adds notes within the chords that would make it sound very Enka-like. At full speed you can't tell, but when played slowly the sound is DISTINCTLY Japanese. The notes he chose within the solo were very intentional as he wanted to make the solo sound japanese without quite sounding Japanese to a regular listener.
I am not at this level of playing yet. Way too fast for me. With your breakdown, explanation and time on my part practicing I feel I could I can accomplish this solo. Thank you so much.
Been at this for the last 8 hours lol. Your video is one of the best in explaining the breakdown of the solo. Man those shifting arpeggios are something else.
I love watching your lessons then realizing that I don't have the patience (or skill) to actually play the piece. Keeps me grounded and my ego in check. Thanks Uncie Ben.
Great lesson uncle. Those arpeggios after the pull offs have stumped. Practice them as I watch tv to get my finger-memory to get there. One of my favorite channels.
Most of that is spot on correct. The ascending minor6 arpeggio run he uses all down picks and rushes the 2nd and 3rd note a little. When he slides up he rushes down pauses at the 12 fret before the flutter of hammer on and pull offs and does pick the 12 fret one more time before sliding up to the last inversion. Which he starts with an up pick and doubles the up pick on both the 18th and 15th fret of the e string. Really gets underneath of the string so it vibrates to and from the Pick up and kinda chirps with some fingers touching the string producing semi harmonics. (More marty isms I call chirps) The evil blues madness lick he slides down from 14-13 (adter the bend) then slides down and back up into starting the lick. The last and final blues lick, He sweeps up into it all, even after each bend he sweeps across the b 13 and e 12 and pauses. That was all wrong in this lesson video. Other then that. Great work. 99% Marty is REALLY technical and very difficult to transcribe.
I've seen a lot of Symphony Of Destruction solo lessons on UA-cam and I can say for sure that this is THE BEST one. The whole thing played at normal speed at the beginning of the video is so accurate that it almost felt like it is played from the original track. Nice job! Just subscribed to your channel.
You absolutely smoked that solo….but what’s makes it so fn sick is how effortlessly you ran right through it!!! Great job bro…. As long as you play like this I will have to keep calling you Uncle Ben…….Damn it! 😅
ha ha so I watched your old video first and learnt that one.. then I was like Im not sure of the positioning and then this version of the lesson came up and boom your corrections are what i had thought! Thanks for the lesson!
Wow Ben, that was awesome !!! What a challenge!! I still can't thank you enough for continuously pushing my sorry old ass over every threshold I come upon. I'm doing the work, but your guidance is pure gold and diamonds. Thank you again. my right hand is incredibly grateful!!!
I don't know why I haven't tried to learn this solo (except those couple times back when I started to play the guitar). This was a great way to start the day! Thanks, Ben! ✌
Awesome 👍. I tried learning from guitar tablitures but it didn't make sense. But UA-cam videos are awesome to learn guitar. Thanks for the video. Folks watching you can learn by practicing over and over and it becomes muscle memory so to speak. Anyone can learn guitar these days. Back in the 80s and 90s we tried to teach ourselves guitar looking at guitar tabs. UA-cam videos are awesome.
I follow a few channels on UA-cam for the solo lessons, but this is honestly the best one on UA-cam. Can't follow the rhythm on the others, but the way you teach it makes it so clear! (Also, all the rest don't sound right!)
Loved it. Great breakdown. I since have remanipulated some of the licks incorporating them into my guitar neck real estate. There's a few gems in there that I never used and have opened up more highway to drive. Thanks Big Ben! Steve-o
been working on this for three days straight and im a tad faster than stepdad speed lol. Trying to get it down by practice this saturday. Thanx bro. Great breakdown of each part.
I know this is an old video, but I wanted to mention that Marty has stated in a few interviews (can't remember which one) that he would use fret wraps during solo overdub takes. He says that due to his unique picking posture, sometimes the strings that aren't being played would ring out and mess up the recording. This is probably why that open D in the beginning of the solo sounds like a dead note. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Good job Ben. I love your « explanation » of Marty’s choice and way of thinking. Here I have a challenge : Lucretia solo, with your point of view for the explanations of course! This one is insane and really more complex in the choice of notes I find. Hope you will maybe do it one day :)
Fantastic analysis/breakdown of this Marty classic! The position-shift chicanery of his playing at break-neck tempos is defo one of the most challenging aspects of a lot of his solos. Thanks UB!

Still waiting for Tornado of Souls, dear Uncle.

How about dream warriors of Dokken? It would be nice to finally get some accurasy out of it..greetings from Greece Ben you re the best!!!
DT's count of tuscany, both solos
Ghost of Perdition, Grand Conjuration from Opeth's Ghost Reveries :)
I'm not a huge theory guy but shifting bass notes and arpeggios was an eye-opener.
God damn man... the insight behind the concepts that Marty uses here are arguably more valuable than the actual solo itself. Thanks so much for this continued exemplary work, Ben. I really appreciate it.
God Loves You🙏🏻❤️
FIIIIIIVE YEARS AGO?! 😢 I’m so late to the party lol
Thank you thank you thank you for this awesome deep dive!
If i get this past 70% tempo I'm going to be hella impressed with myself! Great Lesson

Wow! Best I’ve seen it played (next to Marty himself) and even better job breaking it down. Thanks so much.
This is how you teach a solo! I love how you explained also the context of the licks and not only the notes.
I've tried to learn this for ages but that "tricky part" in the end still kicks my ass.
Love the Black Philip shirt!!
Dude I am eating this up! Great Job! Thank you!
Awesome content!
Holy mamita! Thanks Ben!

He already did it, and its awesome! ua-cam.com/video/E5WoxqThfwU/v-deo.html

Awesome!! Exactly how I play it too

Each note is gold in Marty Friedman solos!!!
I love watching your lessons then realizing that I don't have the patience (or skill) to actually play the piece. Keeps me grounded and my ego in check. Thanks Uncie Ben.
This is the easiest version to follow along with that I have seen yet on this solo. You're attitude is pleasant as well. Thanks Ben!
most detailed and most accurate...thanks
You make it look so easy and the best is the harmoni explanation. Big thanks to you.
Awesome! Thanks
great lesson, thanks
Great lesson uncle. Those arpeggios after the pull offs have stumped. Practice them as I watch tv to get my finger-memory to get there. One of my favorite channels.
I was digging the "Stepdad" speed for sec.
yo whats up lol
I like the way you teach. You are alife saver. I improved so much in my playing. Thanks uncle ben
This is the best and most accurate tutorial i've ever seen.
That's a serious amount of work for that transcription!!!!! Fair play Ben, great lesson as usual!!!!
Awesome Job Ben!! Marty Friedman is a Brutal act to follow for sure. Thank you so much for going over that solo! You Nailed It 🤘🧔🏻♀️🤘
Well Ben, this is the most accurate rendition of this solo I’ve heard and the only one with the feel necessary to sound perfect. That is a fact.
That ascending arpeggio section is brutal, but damn, you nailed it.
Thanks as always, Uncle Ben! Re-learning this now properly to record with my friends, and this is IMMENSELY helpful :D
And uncle Ben plays it like it’s loose change for him. Damn, I felt that. So fluid.
Thanks Uncle Ben...when I wanna learn a solo, you're the first guy I go to!! Awesome work; keep it up!!!!!!!!!
Line6 Ax2 baby !!! I miss mine 😢😢
very few of the guitar lessons that i have saw illustrates like this ... magically, theoretically awesome...
Liked your post Video very much Ben Eller thank for sharing.
I know this is 3 years old, but thank you brother. Been working out a couple of the parts and this helped clear up some of those bad tabs.
Most of that is spot on correct.

Great work. 99%
Marty is REALLY technical and very difficult to transcribe.
Thanks Uncle ben, you are beast. Keep shreding awesome tunes and be safe 😁

Again, played perfectly. Well done, Ben.
ha ha so I watched your old video first and learnt that one.. then I was like Im not sure of the positioning and then this version of the lesson came up and boom your corrections are what i had thought! Thanks for the lesson!

I'll give it a try this weekend. Seems manageable, but surely it's hard. Well done, Uncle Ben! :)
Thanks for this. Been trying to nail it down properly for a while...

This is why you're my favorite uncle!
unique solo, so much styles combined
Uncle Ben. The Best guitar teacher!!!
I still have a bunch of martys old guitar world columns, if I remember right he did show some stuff from this solo at one time.
The arpeggios are so dope. Nice lesson Uncle Ben..
I know this is an old video, but I wanted to mention that Marty has stated in a few interviews (can't remember which one) that he would use fret wraps during solo overdub takes.
