"And then we have the clown which hits the beer keg" is now my favorite bit of musical analysis
I had to rewind when I heard that. It made me do a double take. Did he just say a clown just hit a beer keg? 😆

@@misterknightowlandco yes lol
It's rumored they shipped the clown + keg to the studio for exclusively this part :D
Lmao best comment
Rick Beato treating Nu Metal with the same amount of reverence and respect as seventies Classic Rock is very special to watch.
He is even kind to some of today's stuff when he does his current top 10 reviews. He focuses on the things in the music he likes, on what is working, and leaves the rest out. I would watch this guy if he went on tour with this commemtary and a a cover band. No doubt
Each like is a person who would buy a ticket to watch RB do this same breakdown live with a cover band and a set list. I will like my own comment.
duality doesn't really have the nu metal elements that some other slipknot songs have, but point taken
It deserves to be treated like any other genre
That isn’t nu metal lol
R.I.P Joey. The drumming on this album is immaculate, some of the best drumming on any metal album imo.
Without a doubt
only topped by Iowa imo
I don't listen a lot of Slipknot, not my favourites but the drumming is very memorable. So unique.
Joey left his infinite mark on 'modern' drumming. A short, tiny, soft spoken guy when you meet him, but a crazed powerhouse behind the kit!
And how sick is the fact that he wanted to be a guitar player in this band he was starting with his buddy Paul Gray? Lucky for us that didn't work out, so Joey & Paul regrouped and started a new group, named it 'Slipknot' and made it work this time.
These two probably started a new band, wherever they are (or might be). But if you hear me, guys-thank you for Slipknot & the other kinds of music you gave us over the years,
and thank you even more for the motivation, inspiration and the proof that dreams do come true sometimes... 🤘

The excitement on this guys face describing the music makes it that much more enjoyable ...
I don't even listen to Slipknot, haven't ever liked them, but I have an entirely new appreciation for at least this song after this video. I can't help but grin at the mounting, childish delight on Rick's face as he deconstructs the musical complexity of a song from a band who have never impressed me as recreating anything more than the sound of garbage disposals being fed into a wood chipper.
Limlaith LOL I love Slipknot, but thats was a funny description.
Slipknot gets discounted by some in the metal community for being simple and just a gateway band. It's always nice when someone that knows what they are talking about shows how they actually are pretty talented songwriters.
When Slipknot first became big I dismissed them as the new Korn as I'd had enough of that. Years later I've come back to them and realised how much of a fool I was to discount them.
One of the bands I listened to as a younger person that still sounds really good to me today.
I thought they were alright. Then l saw them live for the first time...
Mix breakdowns like this really shows u how creative and technical Slipknot really are!
@CrashFlicks l've seen them about 4 times. Awesome show.
I love how Corey Taylor can turn his voice on a dime from a scream to perfect singing with no gap.
That, my friend, is called editing. And no, we aren't friends. How dare you?
@@veritog.2799 He does it live, my friend.
@@veritog.2799 You're right about one of those things
Slipknot doesn't get enough credit as musicians. This type of video shows , these guys know what they're doing
You only need to listen to one or two songs by Stone Sour to realise that Corey's talent far surpasses the "generic metalhead" label people are always slapping on him.
I remember as a 12 or 13 year old being scared at first when I heard this, then curious and eventually mesmerised. Theres a level of depth and premeditated coherency in their songs that most bands just can't achieve, but its also not making any false promises about being accessible. Its like "this is happening to your ears now whether you like it or not" and I always loved that about slipknot
Its like all their songs are filled to bursting with these tiny moments of excellent musicianship (or production) that go over the average listeners head...
I keep telling people that Mick and Jim are sorely underrated guitarists. Mick recording gematria is freaky, worth a watch if you haven’t already

Jim Root is the real mad man, using a Jazzmaster to play metal...
@@elmle2525 gives me nightmares, and I don't mind
@@elmle2525 his signature Jazzmasters and Tele's are absolutely badass guitars. Completely out of my price range, but the Squier Tele gets you damn close and only is a nice thorough setup and an EMG 81/60 swap away from feeling and sounding like the authentic Fender. The only thing missing is the ebony fretboard, which is a deal breaker to some, but it's not often I'm finding myself touching the freboard at all on jumbo fret guitars.
"The clown which hits the beer keg" That.....is actually exactly what happens there. Perfect analysis.
One thing I've always loved about Slipknot is the combination of a "raw" quality (kegs and percussion and chugging riffs) and yet there is still technicality and flare there if you really pay attention. They're almost like.. an angry all-American freight train where all the parts come together in harmony to create controlled chaos. The parts are delightfully "rusty" on purpose but goddamn is it ever driving you forward.
This song is a straight masterpiece.

Thank you for finally highlighting the point of the clown and the DJ in Slipknot’s overall sound. It’s always been a bit of a mystery to me but hearing the isolated tracks makes it quite clear
stoltobot I listened to a lot of Slipknot growing up in the early 2000’s and they were on TV a lot in my house on Kerrang and Scuzz (good old England). I remember having this argument extensively with my dad about it being part of the overall sound and not just so they could have their friend come on stage and have something to do.
Part of me thinks he was just trying to rile me, now I think back.
@@s4tchm0j0n3s Not to mention the 'friend on stage' is basically the original creator and director of all things Slipknot, too :P
Reason to Rule All He's definitely a good friend 😁
Clown is their band leader and musical director.
stoltobot poor Craig is only heard once in Slipknots discography, and it’s in this intro. I dare you to tell me where else you here him. Also, if you listen to Slipknots first self titled album, Sid (he’s the dj) is all over the place
You’re one of the few channels where I actually look forward to your next uploads.
Holy shot Corey's scream at the start gave me chills. Absolutely amazing
And after spending the last hour listening to some Slipknot I came to this video to check it out again. RIP Joey Jordison
Does Rick Beato remind anyone else of Anthony Bourdain?
Yeah. A bit.
Yeah. Quite a lot.
Yes, I had to do a double take
I actually thought it was Anthony until I saw the guitar in the first thumbnail I saw and I clicked the video because of it. lol
With a little bit of John Gotti mixed in.
Whoa!! I got goosebumps when you soloed Paul Gray’s bass guitar. Something about his playing that made him so damn heavy! We miss you Paul!!
#2 \m/
Besides the tone, I think it's the fact that it's not perfect. There's mistakes in there. A little buzz. A note that's juuuuuust off beat. It makes it human. There's a bunch of Cliff Burton solo'd tracks on youtube and you hear the same thing. It's not quantized, it's not on a grid.

Joey jordison is a pretty damn underrated drummer for someone who started as a guitarist and then just casually started drumming cause he had to.
I had no idea. That's awesome
Holy crap really???? And he did all that???? What a freakin awesome dude
not true. he started playing drums at 8yrs old and played drums in numerous bands when he was younger but also never stopped playing guitar during that time. idk where you got your info but its not correct. he's been a drummer since childhood and never "had" to be a drummer. even wikipedia states the same thing
When you hear some of his work like Disasterpiece, it’s clear that he was born to drum more than play guitar.
Check out Metallica from the Download Festival where Joey sat in on drums :-O
I always liked to sing “Olive Garden’s insane” on the bridge

14:44 When the air drums kicks in you know it's good music!
Jesus, never noticed all those extra little background notes and sounds until it was pointed out. Its insane how much they add a fullness to the instruments. And yes, RIP Paul.
Him isolating Sid's parts I think could make people realize that him and Craig don't just stand around pretending to do something. They do a lot, even still. Often times Sid's scratches and Craig's samples are just so well mixed and blend perfectly with the song it takes such an ear to notice them.
The turntable thing reminds me a lot of what you talked about during the Blink 182 episode. You can barely here the octave synth in the chorus of All The Small Things, but it adds the oomph and body to that melody.
Talking about heavy music, it would be nice seeing an episode on Gojira

Music lovers should be able to appreciate all forms. It's all art. It's bad ass.
Spot on..wonderful art is music!
Ive often thought that there are people who listen to music and just stick to what they like the most. And then there are people who appreciates music as a whole and will listen to anything they like the sound of.
Truth! Especially as you age, your tastes should expand....I have a burning desire to simply hear great sounds put together with feeling and purpose - that simple! No labels or popular attitudes should sway anyone from liking what they like....except Polka...I just don't get it. Great post!

@@MASTAHMELO wait are you serious? Again, i ask you, what did you think the guy on the turntables was doing this whole time? So just to explain my experience. When i first bought the album, and listened to every track, they came out with music videos for some of the songs, during that year of release. I dont know about you, but even back then, I sometimes listened to the music i liked, with headphones on. So with headphones, if you know anything about music, there is no way you could not hear and notice the mixing in the background.
Furthermore, I've seen this band live, since back in 97' in small venues, as well as large venues, and when watching them live, there is no denying it. Its right there, and you can hear it.
So, nobody is lying to you, ok? just because you didnt hear it, and also never put two and two together, after watching a video or even thinking about perhaps, what instruments to all these crazy play? or are they just hype men who run around the stage like at an ICP show?
You know, some people think about these things, and its ok that you didnt. Its good that you know now, but accusing people of lying over something this not only well known for years, but alos fucking OBVIOUS, if you ever watched one of their videos, where they are all performing like would a live show, sheesh..
